This School Is Changing Recess With Their Designated ‘Buddy Spots’

Second and third graders are starting to change the politics of the playground.

Recess can be stressful, especially for those who are socially awkward or don’t make friends easily. However, one group of children are changing that. The students of Sherwood Forest Elementary School have created designated ‘buddy spots‘ as a way of combating bullying and creating friendship on their playground.

Here’s how it works: Lonely students can come to the designated playground spot. Student leaders from the class have a list of questions to help figure out what the lonely or saddened kids might want to play. The goal is to help those students find a playmate.

Each member of the class rotates acting as a leaders during recess.

“In our current age of cyberbullying and all the problems we’re having in our society, they are making change in what looks like a really small way on a playground, but that’s big,” said Ms. Callender, the teacher of the students who came up with this idea. “What these kids are doing now is really important.”

While the ‘buddy spot’ is only extending as far as this playground right now, it has potential to ripple across America. Take a look at what a local news channel covered on the school:

Losing a pet can be harder than you think.

According to grief psychologist Dr. Alan Wolfelt, losing a pet can be more challenging than we are often prepared for. We take them for granted as companions, and when they leave us, it hits harder than we’re prepared for.

For that reason, companies are beginning to give their employees pet bereavement days. It’s a paid day off for pet owners to take care of any arrangements and explain to their kids what it means to lose somebody to death, in addition to dealing with their own grief.

CBS Miami reports, that when Erica Lee lost her beloved dog “Chief” words could not describe the amount of pain that she felt. They covered her story in an exclusive video, in which she explained how much loss she felt when Chief passed away.

“Chief was the best dog ever. He was very sweet, loving. I was heartbroken,” she said.

What are your thoughts on pet bereavement days and have you been the recipient of one. Please tell us your thoughts in the comment section, or SHARE this intriguing story with a pet owner in your life. And for those of you who have that special best friend by your side everyday, don’t forget to give them lots of snuggles for being there!

At the young age of 12, this little girl went through something no family should ever have to endure.

Gabi Shull was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a form of bone cancer – in March 2011. It made a nasty appearance in her right knee. The way to cure her cancer was by removing a large portion of Gabi’s leg.

[Credit: Facebook]
[Credit: Facebook]
However, rather than becoming an amputee from the knee down, doctor’s did something a little unconventional. In a rare procedure called “rotationplasty,” doctors saved Gabi’s foot, turned it around and now the heel is under her new knee. The rest of her leg is prosthetic.

Undergoing painful rehabilitation, Gabi took her first steps without a walker in March 2012.

“It was really cool. I was crying and so was my mom. I remember that,” Gabi said.

“There’s no way she could be doing what she’s doing if she would’ve had to go with a different option,” Debbie said.

The Shulls are thankful for rotationplasty every single day. Gabi is even back to dancing competitively, which is her passion.

“You have to have a lot of faith and you just have to keep a really positive attitude because if you’re negative, then everything’s going to be negative if you have a negative attitude,” Gabi said.

Dog owners will do just about anything to make sure their four-legged babies are loved, happy, and comfortable. So when this couple and their seven dogs started to feel too cramped as they slept together in their king size bed, they decided to change their bed instead of their sleeping situation.

Chris and Mariesa Hughes, who started the Mr. Mo Project together, which is a nonprofit that gets old or sick dogs out of shelters where they will be euthanized, have dedicated their entire life to dogs- both those that are their own and those that are not.

Over the years, the couple has adopted 7 dogs who were all rescued from various forms of abuse, and they are so devoted to their pets that they all sleep in bed together.

“They all love to sleep on the bed with us but our sleep has really suffered lately,” Chris said. “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to try to steal a corner of my pillow back from Gremlin,” Mariesa added. “I need my beauty rest!”

Kicking the dogs out was simply not an option, so Mariesa and Chris decided to push a full-size bed next to their own to give everyone more space as they wait for a local furniture builder to make a custom super bed with steps and a ramp so that their older dogs could always make it into bed.

Easter is only a week away, but the holiday spirit came to a halt after a easter bunny at the mall found himself in an unexpected brawl.

In the video posted to Twitter last night, the Easter bunny is seen with his half of his costume off and fighting customers in Newport Mall in Jersey City.

The bunny took off his floppy ears, and in the beginning of the video is shown being separated from a man wearing a brown shirt. Just a few seconds after they were separated, the bunny runs after the mall goer, throwing more punches at him.

Warning: The video below contains some inappropriate language.

Mall security attempts to break the men apart:

It is uncertain how the fight started, but it has definitely ruined the Easter spirit for many mall-goers who just wanted their kids to take a picture with the Easter bunny.

When this Grandma-to-be texted the wrong number, things went very right!

We’ve all been on the receiving end of those exciting hospital text messages. “Just checked into the hospital,” they often announce. “We’re just hours away from welcoming Stacey into the world.”

So when one Georgia family sent out one of these thrilling group messages to friends and family, they were blessed with congratulations they didn’t expect.

Mother-in-law Theresa accidentally included a kind stranger by the name of Dennis Williams in the message.

“We are at the hospital,” Theresa wrote. “Having a baby today! She has dilated to between 5-6.”

“Congrats,” responds Dennis, “lol but I think someone got the wrong number.”

Despite the mix-up, Dennis offered up his well wishes and then added that he “and the boys” would roll through with presents for the little bundle of joy.

“Well I don’t know yall but me and the boys will be thru to take picture with the baby,” said Dennis

Everybody thought Dennis and the boys were just joking until they showed up at the hospital and asked for the room number.

“130 come on and see us,” was Theresa’s response.

And sure enough they did. Brothers Dennis and Deorick Williams stopped by and ended up taking a picture with the mother, Lindsey, the father, Mark, and their newborn son, Cason Knox.

The family was thrilled, and later posted the photo on Facebook saying, “he and his brother came by to visit us and brought the baby a gift! What a blessing these two guys were to our family,” wrote Theresa.

“They were so sweet and kind to do this! You are two great guys and thank you for giving to someone you didn’t know.”

It’s hard to understand why anyone would want to purposely hurt an animal, especially one as loving as Ashton.

We’ve seen a lot of dogs overcome unimaginable hardships, like this dog who has become a symbol of survival for victims of violence, but there haven’t been many as heartbreaking as this poor pup. Ashton was found homeless, living on the side of the road, in desperate need of medical attention.

[Arizona Humane Society]
[Arizona Humane Society]
The dog had likely been abused, as he was barely alive due to exhaustion and malnutrition, and his eyes had both popped out of their sockets. Although doctors weren’t able to save the dog’s vision, they saved his life and inspired this brave dog to keep fighting.

Even without his sight, the pit bull had incredible spirit and a vibrant personality. He was put up for adoption by the Arizona Humane Society, who shared his heartbreaking story.

Audrey Nethery from Kentucky is an adorable little girl who suffers from a rare blood condition called Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA).

The disease impacts her body’s ability to circulate oxygen, and because she is unable to produce enough red blood cells, she faces a lot of difficult health issues. Audrey was born with a hole in her heart and a cleft palate, and sadly, she isn’t growing as fast as her peers, partly due to all the steroids she needs to take for her illness.

While Audrey has been through a lot at such a young age, she remains an energetic 7-year-old who loves to sing and dance for her parents. Audrey’s mom, Julie Haise, and dad, Scott Nethery filmed their daughter performing Selena Gomez’s hit song I Love You Like a Love Song, and since uploaded to Facebook it has since received upwards of 13 million views.

Her spunk and sass has won over America’s hearts, and Audrey recently even added karaoke to her repertoire. In the amazing video below, Audrey belts out the lyrics to One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful.

Audrey’s mom says, “Every time I see her dance, even when it’s just in her class, it makes me cry, but seeing her up on that stage was incredible. When she’s dancing, she’s happy and brings so much joy to everyone watching.”

Please watch this incredible video below and SHARE it with your friends on Facebook to bring some sunshine to their day!

Are you ready to fall head over heels? Because these cutie pies are making people all over the world want to book their flights to Ohio!

Here at LifeDaily, it’s no secret that we’re pretty big fans of baby animals. That’s why we love it when we hear awesome birth announcements like this next one out of the well-known Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Five-year-old cheetah mother Willow gave birth to five precious cubs late last week at the zoo, although one factor made these newborns extremely rare.

According to the zoo’s Facebook page, veterinarians stepped in to perform a rare C-section of the tiny newborns, rarely seen with this type of large cat.

[Cincinnati Zoo]
[Cincinnati Zoo]
“The cubs were born under difficult circumstances,” said Dr. Campbell, Director of Animal Health at the Cincinnati Zoo, noting how the cubs have weakened immune systems.

“We are doing all we can to keep them healthy and strong, but it will be a challenge for these cubs moving forward.” The three male and two female cubs were born on March 8th and are still recovering, along with their mother.

[Cincinnati Zoo]

The veterinarian went on to say that the cubs will remain in the nursery for at least 8 weeks, noting that “Important benchmarks for survival of these cubs are the first week and month of life.”

Since cheetahs are an endangered population, breeding programs like the one at Cincinnati Zoo are extremely important. Since 2002, the zoo says there have been 54 cheetah cubs born and we’re hoping they keep up the good work with more adorable newcomers!

Here’s something guaranteed to satisfy your inner pyromaniac…

Whether you like playing with fire or always have an extinguisher on hand, it’s hard to deny that lighting a match can be strangely satisfying.

However, if you’ve ever tried to really go for it and light the entire matchbook, that’s a whole different story! Now thanks to an awesome and completely mesmerizing video from matchstick man extraordinaire HTD on YouTube, we know how glorious the sight – and sound – of 6,000 matches in flames is.

This isn’t the first time HTD has shared an incredible domino-effect matchstick video, but it’s the craziest we’ve ever seen. In the clip, you can see the 6,000 tiny matches all lined up on a safe metal stand, so nothing nearby can catch fire. As soon as one outside match is ignited and slowly moved in, the amazing gust of light that occurs spreads faster than any real wildfire.

The chain reaction video lasts about 15 minutes from when the first match is lit to when the last tiny bit of smoke dies down. While you may or may not want to sit through the entire burn down, skipping through the highlights is a must…just don’t try this at home!

Are you mesmerized too? Please SHARE this video with your friends on Facebook today!

cop and woman

On Sunday in Maryland, officers responded to a 911 from a woman who reported her 81-year-old mother missing.

When her mother, who suffers from dementia left the house to take her daily walk, things got scary when she didn’t return.

Five officers and a K9 responded to the scene and combed the woods for about 40 minutes before they thankfully found the woman.

“At first, she seemed confused at the sudden appearance of police officers on the tree-lined trail, and she asked if the officers were out taking a walk too. They quietly replied ‘Yes,’ after all, it was a beautiful day. And then she seemed relieved and told them she had lost her way. ‘No problem,’ said Officer Morrison who then gently took her hand and, along with the other officers walked her back to her house.”

“Along the way, the officers made small talk with the woman, to make her feel at ease. When asked what the key to a long, healthy life was, the woman replied, “Eat good and stay active,” the Charles County Sheriff’s Office wrote on their Facebook.

Many people are now praising the officers for handling the situation with such grace and sensitivity.

Superglue Helps A Little Girl Walk After Years Of Pain

While most 7-year-olds spend their time running around playing games with friends, this little girl could barely walk because of a mysterious ‘bruise’ that started bothering her when she was just 3 years old.

When Madison Fairchild would complain to mom Kristen about the invisible bruise, they assumed that they just couldn’t see it and that it would get better over time. “Every time we bumped it she would scream or start crying,” Kristen said. “After a month of constantly complaining about why her leg hurt, we got her leg checked.”

Finally, after doctors gave Madison an X-ray, they were finally able to see that the mysterious ‘bruise’ was actually an unusual clump of veins in her leg, which weren’t dangerous but could cause incredible pain that could prevent someone from doing simple activities like walking or standing.

Photo by Seattle Children's HospitalPhoto by Seattle Children's Hospital
Photo by Seattle Children’s HospitalPhoto by Seattle Children’s Hospital

“For the first few years, she was able to move around, [but] she constantly skipped because she couldn’t bear a lot of weight on that front leg,” Fairchild said. “She would always walk on her right toe because anytime she extended her leg it would cause those muscle to contact around the malformation and would cause pain.”

When Madison could no longer straighten her leg, her doctor suggested an experimental treatment in which medical-grade superglue is injected into the veins so they can be removed surgically.

Dr. Jonathan Perkins, a pediatric otolaryngology physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital, discussed a new experimental treatment in which medical-grade superglue could be injected into the veins so that they can be removed surgically without damaging normal tissue around it.

2

Kirsten was hesitant of the experimental procedure at first, but decided to try it. “Four days later, she’s walking,” Kristen said. “It’s a totally different child. Her outlook is more positive.”

A Thief Stole All The Pet Food In An Animal Shelter, So The Community Came Together To Replace It All

Without the help of animal rescue leagues, like the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, many stray and abandoned animals end up eating things they shouldn’t or don’t eat at all. Yet, after a burglar stole about 65 bags of pet food from their food pantry, they had no way of feeding their animals.

When staff from the animal rescue league, which helps over 2,000 dogs and cats each year, went to feed their animals on Sunday morning, they were shocked to see the entire pantry was bare. “I don’t know what your thought process is when you decide to steal donated pet food from a food pantry,” said Monica Zulauf, president and CEO of the rescue. “I never really want to understand that thought process.”

“A staff person came in the morning and noticed that someone had pushed through the chicken wire on our community food pantry and they had taken everything,” Zulauf said. “They left one small bag of kitten food.”

But before they knew it, people began lining up in the parking lot to donate and replace the stolen food, and ended up with at least four times more food than they originally had.

“The community response was amazing,” Zulauf said. “It was a steady stream of everything — from toddlers carrying little bags of cat treats to families who had picked up full bags of pet food.”

“A day that began with sadness and shock, ended up filling our hearts over-the-top! We were confident we would replace the stolen food, but your support – the support from our community – far exceeded our wildest expectations! We are overwhelmed by the generosity of hundreds of people,” the Animal League of New Hampshire wrote in a post to Facebook after the community rallied behind them to replace the stolen food.

Heroes Find A New Mom For These Orphaned Baby Bear Cubs

Finding a human orphaned baby and adoptive parent is relatively straightforward thanks to adoption agencies, but finding a mom to adopt an orphaned bear cub is a bit trickier, and involves a little more manual labor.

Wild animals like bear cubs deserve to grow up in the wild rather than spend the rest of their lives in captivity, which is why these biologists from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were determined to find orphaned bear cubs a mother who could raise them as her own in the wild the past winter.

In order to find a new mom, the biologists find female bears who already have young cubs, and lay the orphaned cub beside her own cubs inside their den while they are hibernating.

Once the biologists are able to track down the den of a mother bear, the team digs their way in where she will be sedated, collared, and finally given a health exam. Finally, the orphaned cub is placed with the other babies to hibernate until spring.

“You can trick females into taking additional cubs if it’s done right,” Boersen said. “It at least gives them a chance they wouldn’t have and it works nearly 100 percent of the time if you can place the cub with a denned [female bear].”

Just when Amber Ertley and Levi Nelson thought they were done having children, Ertley found out she was pregnant once again.

The Oneonta, Alabama couple looked forward to growing their family by one more person, until they found out something shocking at the mother’s ultrasoundDuring a routine checkup, the technician burst out in a smile and said she heard three heartbeats.

Ertley replied, “What does that mean? What does three heartbeats me?” And the technician said, “You’re having triplets.”

The Nelson triplets would be three girls who shared the same amniotic sac and placenta, meaning they would be identical. Identical triplets form when a single fertilized egg splits two times, and the odds of having them are extremely rare and occur in about one in 200 million births! According to al.com, neither genetics nor fertility treatments can increase the chances of having identical triplets or twins: it’s pure luck.

Ertley, 24, had a healthy pregnancy up until the end when she started showing signs of preeclampsia. On February 15, Ertley went into the hospital, and five days later she went into labor and doctors prepped her for a C-section. The first two babies came out fine, but after the third baby came out crying.

Nelson looked over at his wife and saw her struggling: it looked like she was having a seizure. Immediately, Nelson heard ‘Code Blue’ and saw people running into Ertley’s room. He started to imagine the worst, saying:

“It was the scariest moment of my life. I was afraid I was going to be behopping home with three babies and no momma.”

Ertley wound up losing a lot of blood, and six hours after her heart stopped, Nelson was able to visit his wife, where she was sedated and hooked up to a breathing tube.

Ertley fought to recover, but her babies thrived, and Norah, Rylan and Remi weighed more than four pounds at birth and didn’t need any oxygen or IV fluids.

If you’ve ever visited the Big Apple, you probably know that you can see just about anything on the streets of NYC. However, this is one invention that even some of the most jaded New Yorkers will be excited about.

There is no denying that city folks love their dogs and when it comes to pampering their pooches, nothing is too good for them. From dog walkers on demand to luxury pet hotels that most people can’t afford to themselves, anything goes for Manhattan pet parents, but for such a pet-friendly city, running errands can often mean running into problems.

That’s why a new invention called the “Dog Parker” has arrived to make things a little easier for those on the go. “Instead of leaving your dog home alone for unwanted periods of time, tying him up outside, or limiting his walks, keep your dog with you and realize the convenience of running all of your errands and living an active lifestyle with your best friend in tow.” says DogParker.com.
