Bibb County Superior Court Judge Verda Colvin spoke to troubled teens as part of the “Consider the Consequences” program and she delivered a very powerful message. 

Early on in the speech, Colvin brought out a body bag. 

She said “You can have the ultimate experience — you can be in this body bag. And the only way somebody will know you’re in here is this tag with your name on it. What do you wanna do?”

With the girls on one side and the boys on the other, Colvin took the time to speak to both.

For the teen girls, she expressed the importance of self-respect.

“You’re special, you’re uniquely made,” Colvin said. “Stop acting like you’re trash and putting pictures of yourself on the internet. Stop being disrespectful to your parents. Care about your future. Be somebody.”

For the boys, she discussed the realities of life in prison. 

“Somebody raping you in the middle of the night, and there’s nothing you can do but just lay there. Cause guess what — everybody got to get their turn. So it’s your turn, cause you’re the new meat on the block,” she told them.

The judge addressed the imprisonment rates in the black community. 

“I am sick and tired of seeing people who look like you and I come in my courtroom and I have to sentence them to prison,” she said.

Judge Colvin became emotional, and so did the children. Other officers walked around holding tissues, and the Judge dabbed her eyes as she spoke to the teens about turning their lives around. 

“When I see you all hurting, it makes me hurt too. Because I don’t even know you all personally, but I love each and every one of you. And I don’t want you to come to my courtroom and I have to send you as an adult, at the age of 17. I don’t want that. I don’t want to experience that myself, and I don’t want you all to experience that,” she said, grabbing a tissue.

Animal owners will do just about anything to keep their beloved pets safe, even if that means putting themselves in danger. In fact, about 48% of abuse victims choose to stay with their abusers becuase they have no place to bring their pet, and their innocent animals would likely become victims of abuse if left behind.

To help give victims more freedom to leave an abusive situation, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, which provides crisis intervention as well as support for victims of domestic abuse in Iowa, just announced that their shelter, Cooper’s House, would be adding boarding facilities to their property so that victims wouldn’t have to choose between abuse and their pets.

The new facility will have indoor kennels for dogs, a fenced in space for dogs to play, as well as an indoor space that can house 12 cats at a time.

While the new pet program will cost an estimated $30,000 per year, developmental director for DVIP Missie Forbes explained it was just another way they could help victims live a life free from fear.

On top of the incredible new space for animals, DVIP is training a Golden Retriever as a therapy dog for victims at Cooper’s House, and is hiring a part-time pet therapist for any animals that had also been abused.

Mary Pat Siess has spent ten and a half years of her life fighting an aggressive form of Leukemia, which is why she jumped at the chance to make a birthday cake for a special new client who had also been diagnosed with cancer at just 6-years-old.

Despite fighting her own cancer for nearly half of her own life, Mary Pat managed to graduate from college and hold down a job at a local bakery. She knows firsthand what it’s like to fight such an aggressive disease, and even though she has spent the last six years and is still currently fighting her latest relapse, Mary Pat wanted to ensure the sick little girl was able to have the birthday party- and cake- of her dreams on such a special day.

However, while Mary Pat got to work on the special six-year-old’s cake, her family got to work on pulling off an even bigger surprise.

When the moment came for the birthday cake to get picked up by the little girl, Mary Pat was stunned to see her brother Robert, a Fort Bragg paratrooper who’s about to be deployed to Afghanistan, walk through the door with tickets for the whole family to go on a trip to Disney World.

“She’s probably the strongest person I’ve met in my life,” Robert said about Mary Pat, who was completely shocked by her family’s surprise. “About time we did something for her.”

However, she soon discovered her baby was screaming out in pain. “It turns out some lowlife scum thought it would be ‘fun’ to deliberately put drawing pins in the bottom of the changing mat,” Turner wrote, explaining that because Samuel isn’t old enough to express he was being stabbed, he now has 5 holes on his body and looks like a pin cushion.

When Jason had to go on a business trip, he had to leave his loving dog Sarah behind.

Anticipating his return, Jason was extremely excited to see Sarah, and while he knew she would be excited too, he didn’t anticipate how emotional she would be. 

As soon as Jason walked in the door, Sarah ran up and latched on to him as tight as possible. 

She literally didn’t want to let go, and it was beautiful to watch her love for Jason come across in this reunion.

Every time Jason went to put her down, Sarah ran back over and wanted to nuzzle faces, and hold on even longer.

One of the first times Matt and I left Luella, was to a worship concert. At that conference, a missionary shared his story, and it shook me to the core. A moment that would forever be burned in my fragile, hormone raging, new mommy heart that had already become 100xs more fragile after meeting her.

That missionary was in an orphanage in Uganda, and he has been in many before, but this one was different. He walked into a nursery with over 100 filled cribs with babes. He listened in amazement and wonder as the only sound he could hear was silence. A sound that is beyond rare in ANY nursery, let alone a nursery where over 100 new babes laid. He turned to his host and asked her why the nursery was silent. Then , her response to him is something I will never, ever forget. EVER. This was my “why” moment.

She looked at him and said, “After about a week of them being here, and crying out for countless hours, they eventually stop when they realize no one is coming for them…”…They stop crying when they realize no one is coming for them. Not in 10 minutes, not in 4 hours, and maybe, perhaps, not ever…

Broke. I broke. I literally could have picked up pieces of my heart scattered about the auditorium floor. But instead, it stirred in me a longing, a hunger.. A promise in my spirit.We came home, and that night as Luella rested her tiny little 10lb body against mine and we rocked, I made a promise to her. A promise that I would always come to her.

Always. At 2:00am when pitiful desperate squeals come through a baby monitor, I will come to her.Her first hurt, her first heartbreak, we will come to her. We will be there to hold her, to let her feel, to make decisions on her own, and we will be there. We will show her through our tears and frustrations at times, that it is okay to cry, and it’s ok to feel. That we will always be a safe place, and we will always come to her.

New Mom Recalls The Moment She Made A Vow To Her Daughter is an article from: LifeDaily

Isaac Wenrich was teaching 13-year-old Nathan Boyer to play baseball when something unexpected happened. 

Wenrich is a minor league baseball player with the Florence Freedom of Kentucky, and he coaches kids during the off-season in Chandler, Arizona. On March 28, Wenrich and Nathan were hitting some balls as usual, when Wenrich suddenly collapsed. 

Immediately, Nate knew what to do and he rolled Wenrich over and grabbed his phone and called 911. Nate said, “I was just so freaked out and overwhelmed by it.” But he calmed down and remembered that he knew how to do CPR. 

He says he remembered it from boy scouts a few years ago, so he put his hands together and began pressing on Wenrich’s chest. Wenrich was suffering from a heart attack, but Nate helped to keep him alive. 

Katy Huetter, Wenrich’s girlfriend, told ABC News, “Nathan had to do CPR for 4 minutes before the paramedics got there. They said if he didn’t do CPR, Isaac would be dead right now.”

Wenrich said “Nate knew to roll me over, he got my phone and called 911, he started CPR.” He added, “I’m beyond thankful. I think the Lord brings people in your life for crazy reasons and he just happened to put Nate in mine. I wouldn’t be here today if he wasn’t in my life.”

The coach said that there aren’t many kids out there like Nathan. “He is just such a hard worker with the most amazing personality. He is such a well-rounded 13-year-old,” he told ABC News. 

Huetter says, “I never met [Nate] but now he’s part of our family. We want to honor this kid as much as we can; he is a hero.”

Newborn Baby Helps Dad Deliver A Precious Marriage Proposal is an article from: LifeDaily

Most people can’t stand the idea of being stuck on a plane for hours at a time, but LouAnn Alexander made a career out of it and she loved every minute of it. So when she was abruptly forced to retire from being a flight attendant, her brother found a way to give her the send-off she deserved.

LouAnn had dedicated 30 years of her life as a flight attendant, and figured her back pain was caused from years of lifting heavy bags into the overhead carry-on compartments. However, when the 58-year-old who had beat breast cancer twice went in to see a doctor a few weeks ago, they discovered her back pain was actually a symptom of pancreatic cancer, which had already spread.

In just a few short weeks after being diagnosed, LouAnn managed to take care of every last detail of her funeral arrangements so her family wouldn’t have anything to worry about after she passed away yet never got to say goodbye to her coworkers and have a traditional retirement party.

While on his way to see his sick sister, Rex Ridenoure decided to use his flight to somehow give her the farewell she deserved. “It seemed so sad to me that she couldn’t depart the airline the way she would have wanted, one with an official retirement party,” he said. “So I wanted to make that flight somehow her last flight, but I was scrambling for ideas.”

With the help of the flight attendants, some of whom had worked with LouAnn, Rex was allowed to stand up in front of the flight and summarized who his sister was, her flying career, and what had happened in the previous six weeks. Amazingly, nearly 100 passengers wrote her notes on napkins, made her paper flower bouquets, and one passenger even managed to crochet a cozy headband in case she might undergo chemotherapy and lose her hair.

Rex shared the 96 messages with his sister and on his Facebook so everyone could see her story. “My sister doesn’t like sob stories,” Ridenoure said. “One of the messages we’re trying to get through is that, while this is all definitely a sad story, please go get yourself checked if you have a weird symptom. Don’t take it for granted that it’s just a crick in your back.”

“That whole flight for me has shown me, hey, the world is not so negative if you just have the right spark. It sure seems like there’s a large portion of the population that are inherently nice, and can be nice if given the opportunity.”

Strangers Turn Flight Into Touching Tribute For Flight Attendant With Cancer is an article from: LifeDaily

Military K-9 dogs are responsible for saving thousands of soldiers during military conflicts around the world by using their keen senses to sniff out danger. Like any brave soldier, their service deserves to be recognized and honored.

In just six years, one German Shepherd U.S. Marine dog named Lucca managed to complete 400 missions and protect thousands of lives while serving with the allied troops in Afghanistan and Iraq before ultimately having to retire after losing a leg on the battlefield.

To honor her for her service, Lucca and her handler Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Willingham were flown from California to London where she received the PDSA Dickin Medal, the animal version of the Victoria Cross, which is the highest British military honor. “Thousands of service members have come home because of the capabilities of our dogs,” Willingham said. “It’s always great to see their actions on the battlefield being recognized.”

Before losing her leg in an explosion, Lucca’s loyalty, intelligence, and drive made her the perfect partner for Willingham, and luckily none of that changed after her injury. “She had her surgery and amazingly within 10 days she was walking around again,” Willingham said. “The best part is that she has the same personality as she had before the blast.”

The PDSA Dickin Medal has been given to 29 dogs, 32 WWII messenger pigeons, three horses, and one cat, yet this is the first time an American military K-9 is being honored with the award. “I know you don’t understand the words but I hope you sense the human warmth, gratitude and pride that we all feel for your heroism and for a job extremely well done,” said Retired Maj. Gen. Dean G. Sienko as he addressed Lucca directly.

“It is very humbling to be part of this entire process,” Willingham said. “I think more importantly is that Lucca’s accomplishments are going to help bring awareness and recognition to all our military working dogs and their handlers.”

After her honest post to Facebook was shared nearly 45,000 times, Donielle thanked everyone while also reminding everyone to take a more active role in their children’s lives.

Sometimes all it takes to completely change your views and way of life is one new adventure. When 28-year-old Sarah Conque decided to leave grad school in 2013 to care for children in need of desperate help in Haiti, she knew it would be an incredible experience, but nothing could have prepared her for what would happen next.

According to LittleWarriorNika.com, a few months after Conque left her home in Louisiana to work at Danita’s Children Medical Center in Haiti she found herself holding a newborn baby with hydrocephalus, a condition where there is a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Conque wrote she vowed to help the woman and the 3-month-old baby she claimed to be her niece, traveling far to help little Nika undergo life-saving surgery.

Surprisingly, the biggest difficulty has been encouraging her "aunt" to love and take care of her. Unfortunately, Conque soon uncovered a web of lies from the woman, Nika’s mother, who was a prostitute that tried to drink poison to kill her baby and even sell her body for research. She explained that women being ashamed of disabled children is common in Haiti. “Many believe that if you have a disability, you must be cursed or that you can be healed with voodoo rituals, or even a worse belief – that you can catch “it” too if you touch the individual.”

In September 2014 (left), Nika was 12 mths old and weighed only 6lbs. Her little body was fighting, but her organs were failing. She couldn't suck a bottle and could only tolerate a pinky sized amount of milk every 2hrs through a feeding tube. On top of the neglect she endured prior to living at @danitaschildren, she was given the diagnosis of hydranencephaly that medically gave her terrible odds of living past even 12mths. You see, she only has a brain stem and a little bit of her cerebellum. Her CT scan showed that she doesn't have hardly any brain tissue! How does this all add up to equal the beautiful 16lb 16mth princess (right) that lights up our lives today?! The only explanation is that it is a COMPLETE miracle! The Giver of Life reversed the outcome that many thought was inevitable… He gave her body new strength and continues to do so everyday! Although Nika’s mother wore nice clothes and jewelry, it was clear the baby was never fed and would soon die. She agreed to give up her baby, with Conque looking after her. Doctors told Conque “99% of babies with this diagnosis die before they turn one and that this condition is ‘incompatible with life’,” but the miracle girl kept surviving and she was able to find a hospital in Florida that did pro-bono surgery.

This girl keeps showing us miracle after miracle…. "Don't believe me? Just watch!" Kelvin Lewis and Afonso Slater are best friends from Gilbert, Arizona, who have only a few weeks left of their high school careers.

However, unlike most American teenagers, the 18-year-olds never would have imagined they’d ever even get the chance to go to school at all.

Both children were brought to an orphanage where they remained close and became each other’s family, eating nothing but beans and rice, and fighting for survival together.

“We had found these children independently and we hadn’t realized they were best friends,” Sharon said. “Yes, I think it’s amazing but I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe in God-incidences. I don’t think this all happened by chance.”

This fall, Kelvin and Afonso will remain together on their next journey, as roommates at Brigham Young University. Their lives have changed so much since the orphanage, but both teens have no doubt that they have remained in each other’s lives for a reason.

“There’s no way this could be chance,” Afonso told USA Today. “I feel like God is running my life and he wants me to stay with Kelvin for some reason.”

Fate Leads Orphaned Best Friends From Mozambique To The Same U.S. Town is an article from: LifeDaily

For a canine who’s only ever lived on the street, it surprised rescuers when this dog showed them nothing but love. 

Meet Fram. He is a 6-month-old puppy who was found roaming a busy and dirty street in Romania. 

When rescuers found Fram, the pup lovingly reached out and gave one man his paw.

It was such a special moment for a stray dog to show a human this much love- he was must have known he was being rescued.

Once Fram was off the street, Howl of a Dog was nice enough to take him in, but he required immediate medical care. 

Being a street pup, Fram was covered from head to toe in fleas and ticks, and he was also diagnosed with demodectic mange, which he was prescribed medication for and given a special bath. 

After he was cleaned up, Fram relaxed and held ‘paws’ again with one of his caretakers. 

He was given some toys and got to play outside with other dogs. Fram was basically becoming the dog he was always meant to be.

While Howl of a Dog was looking for a loving home for Fram, they recently announced that he has a forever home waiting for him in the UK.

We are so happy for Fram, and overjoyed this story had a fantastic ending.

Grateful Dog Shakes Rescuer’s Hand When He Learns He’s Being Saved is an article from: LifeDaily

If there’s a “Stepdaughter of the Year Award” out there, the following video proves that Kristin Russell deserves it from now until the end of time.

She saved up her hard-earned money from deployment to plan the following surprise for her stepdad Dave, who she says has always done anything and everything he could for her when she needed a father figure in her life.

“My first memories of him are playing barbies with me and reading to me. He coached every softball team I was on and came to every Karate tournament.” Russell wrote on YouTube, where she shared the following heartwarming video. “He never had to do any of that.”

When Russell was young, she remembers Dave showing just how much he cared for her mother, when he sacrificed his most prized possession to pay for their wedding.

For the past two years, Russell has been planning to get Dave back the same car he gave up so long ago.

Daughter Surprises Stepdad With The Car He Sold To Pay For Their Wedding is an article from: LifeDaily

At LifeDaily, we’re used to writing about dogs and cats that do crazy things, but never a polar bear. 

This was not a regular day at the zoo for one man, who had an incredibly unexpected encounter with a polar bear.

A woman nearby filmed the video below of the man dropping to the ground to do pushups, and the polar bear copied his every move! 

The man would even switch it up, and continue his pushups from side-to-side, but the polar bear was not thrown off. He dove under the water, hitting the bottom of his enclosure at nearly the same time the man hit the ground- they were in perfect synchronization. 

While the animal’s intentions with this behavior are unclear, many Twitter users commented on the LAD Bible video saying: 

“Obviously wants to bite that dudes face off.” wrote @raypettersen

“Bear was trying eating you mate,” said @macd0722, while @PaulMufc98 added: “I don’t think she realized the bear wanted to rip him apart.”
