There’s nothing quite like holding your newborn son and looking in their beautiful blue eyes for the first time, but for new Dad, Darrel Wanzer-Serrano, this was not a possibility.
That’s because his little guy was born more than three months early. Carlos Jesús “CJ” Wanzer-Serrano was born May 15, a few days after his mother, Nicole Wanzer-Serrano, started showing signs of preeclampsia and had to be admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The condition can cause high blood pressure and kidney problems in pregnant women, Iowa City Press-Citizen reports.
“(Nicole) was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome, which is like super-preeclampsia,” Darrel said. “She was admitted on a Wednesday, and we basically were preparing ourselves for a long-term stay at the hospital. Early that Sunday morning, she was not feeling right, and they had to perform an emergency C-section.”
Darrel said the surgery was necessary to save Nicole’s life, but CJ already was small for a fetus 24 weeks and three days old, and he still had another 3½ months until his Sept. 1 due date.
However, 5 weeks after CJ was born, Dad finally got his wish to hold his son.
