Bullies have been around since the dawn of time, but kids today have it way worse than when their parents remember growing up. As an parent, we want to protect our kids through anything and nothing hurts more than knowing your child is being bullied.

That’s why it helps so much when another child or stranger makes them laugh, smile and feel included in the fun. One Columbus, Georgia mom recently took to Facebook about negative bullying incident turned around, thanks to her local Chick-fil-A.

Wheelchair-bound son Caleb Merriken was purposely left out from playing with a group of kids during “Galaxy Night” at the restaurant.

“I felt like he might have been embarrassed, so I didn’t want to rub salt in the wound, but I had to talk to Caleb about it,” Kari Merriken wrote to ABC News. “I told him that I wanted him to take this experience and let it make him a better person than he already is. He’s such a good kid with a big heart. He is so brave and resilient. Dealing with his disease is not easy, but he doesn’t let it keep him from enjoying life. He keeps a positive outlook and a strong mind.”

Although she was heartbroken for her son, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, what happened to him was incredible. Two Chick-fil-A employees saw the incident and threw on their Star Wars gear to challenge the 8-year-old to a lightsaber duel.

The grateful mom later shared a photo to the Chick-fil-A Wynnton/ Macon Road Facebook page, commending the restaurant and thanking the workers “who were much cooler (and more skilled with a light saber) than mom”.

In a world filled with so much anger and hatred, it’s nice to know that you can also count on a lot more people than you expect! There’s so much love to be spread.

Mom Lets Baby Deliver Itself In ‘Natural C-Section’

Many expectant mothers decide how exactly they want their newborn son or daughter to enter the world, and for the most part, doctors and caregivers do their best to make sure those wishes are carried out.

However, one hospital flat-out denied one mom when she explained her birth plan. Knowing that she had to have a cesarean section, mom decided to make the most of her limited choices and wanted to have a ‘natural c-section’ instead of a traditional one where doctors often quickly yank the baby out of the womb.

Her local hospital refused to take part in a natural c-section, where doctors make the incision into the womb and bring out the baby’s head, but then let the baby take over from there as they wiggle their way out for about four minutes.

Rather than give up on her dream birth, mom went to another hospital further away who agreed to the natural c-section, and when it came time to give birth, they honored her every wish by not putting drapes up so she could watch every second, letting the baby spend time on her chest, waiting to cut the umbilical cord until it stopped pulsing, playing her preselected music, and even dimming the lights.

Doula Sophie Messager shared a video of the unusual birth the next day, which has been viewed over 2.4 million times on Facebook, and shows the incredible moment the baby slowly wriggles out of the womb.

Mom Shares Hilarious Photo Of Terrified Dad During Labor

Many moms consider themselves mothers the minute they realize they are pregnant, but for dads, that moment often doesn’t fully happen until they are standing helplessly while their partner writhes in pain for hours during labor.

After almost 24 hours of painful labor, Australian mom-to-be Alisha Baxter was surrounded by her husband Jive, her mother, and her cousin, who was excitedly photographing the entire birth, when she started to push out her baby daughter, Blakely.

As Alisha started to push, however, it became clear that she wasn’t the only one going through a lot of pain. “He wasn’t saying anything, he was just really nervous,” Alisha said of her husband. “Before we were in the birthing suite he had a little moment crying because he couldn’t help me through the pain.”

Aside from his nerves about being a new dad, Jive was focusing on handling the pain that mom was giving him as she squeezed his hand, and the pain and terror were clear on his face as he looked down to see the baby coming out. “At the time my mum told him to look because the baby’s head was crowning and he didn’t really want to look,” Alisha said.

“Us blokes go through a lot of pain as well. As you can see in my face haha,” Jive said about the hysterical picture, which Alisha’s cousin managed to capture.

Rescuers Discover The Heartbreaking Reason Why Sweet Dog Won’t Kiss Them

Animal rescue teams are, unfortunately, used to finding innocent animals in dangerous and heartbreaking situations, and after a while, almost nothing shocks them anymore.

However, even the rescuers at the Animal Charity of Ohio were horrified by how they found this pit bull, who had wandered onto someone’s porch after they assume he escaped from his abusers. Because of the scars covering his face, it’s clear the gentle pit bull, who they named Bubbles, has been abused his whole life, and also believed to have been used as bait in a dog fighting ring.

Despite the obvious signs of abuse and pain, the rescue team was surprised by how gentle and trusting Bubbles was when they were called to the scene. Instead of cowering or trying to attack them, he quickly trusted the strangers and nuzzled up against them.

“At first glance at the scars on his face you would assume he is a fighter, but with us –all he wants is attention. He keeps going to each of us to be petted and loved,” Animal Charity of Ohio wrote online.

“That is when we noticed something wasn’t right. He isn’t giving us kisses,” they said. “His face touches ours, but that’s it. One of us wondered out loud, ‘Does he even have a tongue?’ We were horrified when we looked inside his mouth and found that his tongue is missing.”

Aside from his missing tongue, the team found that Bubble’s teeth have been ground down, he has heartworms, and other parasites, but is finally getting the care and treatment he desperately needs to recover and heal.

Can you believe the tragic reason why this abused dog can’t give kisses? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and please SHARE this with friends on Facebook.

Here’s How To Protect Your Child’s Baby Monitor From Creepy Hackers

Screen Shot 2016-07-28 at 4.46.38 PM

Today’s advancements in technology make it a lot easier to keep your kids safer than when we were growing up.

From being able to track their whereabouts via a GPS locator on their cell phones to being able to watch them at home via monitor while at work, there is no limit to what parents will do to feel like their little ones are safe and protected. However, in the age of the internet, there are also things that make our kids more unsafe than before.

As you can see in this shocking story about a woman seeing her neighbor’s feed on her child’s baby monitor, wavelengths can easily be crossed, which makes it pretty simple for hackers to peek in and even talk to your sleeping baby, as well.

Luckily, there are steps every parent can take to prevent this from happening.

[Shutterstock]

Here are the best things you can do to keep your kids safe, thanks to Kids Savers Network:

  • Buy your monitor directly from the company that makes them. Avoid buying used / pre-owned.
  • As soon as you get your product, and before setting it up, register it. By doing this, you will receive software updates that are specifically being designed for security concerns.
  • Change the default password for the monitor. Make sure the password is unique, long, and strong. Default passwords are easy to guess by hackers!
  • Put password protection on your home router. Do not use common passwords or passwords that include your town, city, or your name.
  • Firewall your privacy! If you do not know how to do this, hire a professional to install a Firewall between your internet connection and all of your devices! This will keep intruders out!
  • Secure your Wifi! Make sure your home Wifi is secured and locked down properly with WPA2 + encryption and SSID masking to make it tough to hack!
  • Turn-off your Baby Monitor when not in use. Leaving on devices all the time makes it easier for intruders to hack the systems.

Unfortunately, no baby monitor is “hack proof” as of right now, but these digital baby monitors are as close as you can get, according to Kids Savers Network

Fitness Model Mom Proves Weight Is Just A Number With Inspiring Instagram Photo

Do you have a scale in your home? If so, are you someone who steps on it every night or just once in a while, when you’re wondering where your weight is at?

Like many men and women, Kelsey Wells used to judge herself by the number she read on her scale. She was by no means overweight, but she wasn’t happy with the was she looked. After she gave birth to her sweet son, she decided it was time for her to step into action and joined Instagram fitness mega-star Kayla Itsines’ Bikini Body Guide movement, a workout regimen extremely popular with young women.

“When I first started #bbg I was 8 weeks post-partum and 145 lbs”, she wrote in a now-viral Instagram post. “I weighed 130 before getting pregnant, so based on nothing besides my own warped perception, I decided my “goal weight” should be 122 and to fit into my skinniest jeans.”

This kid!👆🏼☺️ He is currently OBSESSED with playing "blast off" (aka having us throw him up in the air) — which I love!😍 However he's not exactly the tiniest of two-year-olds so let's just say my arms were sore before I even began #BBG #arms today.😂😁 || YOU GUYS I CANNOT EVEN RN.😭❤️❤️ Let me tell you something. Yesterday afternoon Ry was like "hey! Check it out! Elite daily wrote an article about your last post!! I was like WHAA!!? And we thought that was pretty cool cause I mean I never imagined someone would write a news article about one of my posts?🙈 Anyway, then I read it and by the end I actually got emotional. Because it was so nice. And mostly because it made me SO FREAKING HAPPY that someone else was helping me spread a message that I feel so, so passionate about. THEN I come out of Costco today to a bunch of texts from @caseylynnhoward with links to more articles!? 😱🙈😭❤️ I AM SERIOUSLY BLOWN AWAY YOU GUYS!! ESP to each of you who have written saying it was what you needed to hear, and to those of you who have helped spread the #screwthescale mantra, my heart could burst.🤗❤️ I just feel so thankful. || Last but not least HI!👋🏼 I'm Kelsey. I write really long captions cause I really don't know how to not. I may be a lot of things but I'm always honest and I'm always myself — I have anxiety and if I start filtering myself or worrying what people think it stresses me out!😂 I am obsessed with my boys and fitness and emojis and BBG CAUSE ITS THE BEST. And, of course, food. I think we should workout because our bodies are AMAZING and deserve to be taken care of. OKLOVEYOUBYE!🤗🤗🤗 . . . . . #mysweatlife #sweat #bbgbabes #bbgmums #bbgmoms #bbgcommunity #fit #fitmom #fitness #fitspo #fitgirls #fitfam #fitness #workout #happy #healthy

After just a few months of the workout plan, in which she tracked her progress in a series of photos, she exceeded her goal weight, dropping down to just 122 pounds and fitting back into her skinny jeans, but something still wasn’t right.

SCREW THE SCALE || I figured it was time for a friendly, yet firm reminder.🤗 YOU GUYS. PLEASEEEEEE STOP GETTING HUNG UP ON THE NUMBER ON THE STUPUD SCALE! PLEASE STOP THINKING YOUR WEIGHT EQUALS YOUR PROGRESS AND FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING PLEASE STOP LETTING YOR WEIGHT HAVE ANY AFFECT WHATSOEVER ON YOUR SELF ESTEEM, like I used to. To any of you who are where I once was, please listen to me. I am 5' 7" and weigh 140 lbs. When I first started #bbg I was 8 weeks post partum and 145 lbs. I weighed 130 before getting pregnant, so based on nothing besides my own warped perception, I decided my "goal weight" should be 122 and to fit into my skinniest jeans. Well after a few months of BBG and breastfeeding, I HIT IT and I fit into those size 0 jeans. Well guess what? I HAVE GAINED 18 POUNDS SINCE THEN. EIGHT FREAKING TEEN. Also, I have gone up two pant sizes and as a matter of fact I ripped those skinny jeans wide open just the other week trying to pull them up over my knees.😂 My point?? According to my old self and flawed standards, I would be failing miserably. THANK GOODNESS I finally learned to start measuring my progress by things that matter — strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS. Take progress photos and videos. Record how many push-ups you can do, ect. And if you can, your BFP — there is only a 5 lb difference between my starting and current weight, but my body composition has changed COMPLETELY. I have never had more muscle and less body fat than I do now. I have never been healthier than I am now. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin than I am now. And if I didn't say #screwthescale long ago, I would have gave up on my journey. So to the little teeny tiny voice in the back of my head that still said "😳wtf is this- not 140!?😭😩" last week when I stepped on the scale, I say SCREW. YOU. And I think you should probably say the same to your scale too. #byefelicia 👋🏼🚫⚖ . . #bbgprogress #transformationtuesday #fit #fitness #workout #fitmom #fitchick #fitfam #fitnesstransformation #beforeandafter #sweat #mysweatlife #girlswithmuscle #girlgains #strongnotskinny

She continued to workout and has since gained 18 pounds of pure muscle, something the new mom is very proud of today. She looks and feels better than ever and is grateful she remembers that the number on the scale is just a number.

“Last week when I stepped on the scale, I say SCREW. YOU. And I think you should probably say the same to your scale too,” the fitness blogger shared with her 380,000+ followers on Instagram.

8 WKS POST BABY to 84 WKS BBG || You guys!! Seriously thank you SO MUCH for your kindness and love on my last post- sharing transformation photos is always a bit nerve wracking and your support blows me away.😭💗 || Anyway, here is the back side!🙈 ALSO, I am reading all your questions and messages and plan to answer as many as I can in my posts throughout this week! || HAPPY MONDAY FITFAM! “THANK GOODNESS I finally learned to start measuring my progress by things that matter — strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS.”

LAST WORKOUT OF MY 7th 'ROUND' OF BBG DONE!! 😅👊🏼😆 || So now that we have the (amazing) #sweatwithkayla app, "rounds" of BBG aren't really a thing anymore- we now can just go by weeks without having to repeat any! (You beginners don't even know how amazing you have it!👊🏼) BUT, back when I first started (or attempted starting😂) there was just one Bikini Body Guide and it was a 12 week program. Hence, even though I now use the app I am still in the habit of tracking my progress (and taking my transformation pics) every 12 weeks. Well today I completed my 84th solid week of #bbg, which I realized would mean my seventh round. As a girl who bought the first guide without being able to finish one push-up let alone ONE full 12 week round, I am feeling pretty stoked.😊☺️ || I have all the feels rn because looking back on my journey since finding BBG brings tears to my eyes every time. As always, so much love and gratitude for my amazing friends @kayla_itsines and @tobi_pearce for creating a platform and program like no other.💗 || YOU GUYS!! YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE. If you want to. You can be what you want to be, do what you want to do. Police Officers Shows Kids How To Have Fun At Local Pool

For many parents, the local pool is the perfect place to bring kids to cool off from the summer heat, while also spending some time exercising. However, no parent wants to see police at the pool, since it usually means something bad has happened.

So when parents spotted police officer from the Paducah Police Department arrive at the Noble Park Pool in Kentucky on a hot day, they were understandably anxious as they looked around to make sure their children were alright.

The police quickly explained that nothing was wrong, they had actually just wanted to stop by the pool to treat all the kids to some free ice cream.

“The officers held two Cannonball contests — one off the diving board and one in the shallow end of the pool,” The department wrote on their Facebook page. But soon all the kids started begging the officers to show off their cannonball skills.

The kids finally convinced Chief Barnhill and Officer Matt Scheer to cannonball into the pool, and even got Officer Gretchen Morgan to take a turn on the water slide all while wearing their uniforms and work boots.

Puppy Wags Her Tail Seconds Before Vet Was About To Put Her To Sleep

While veterinarians would love to be able to save every single animal that gets brought through their door, they are often forced to put animals to sleep if there’s no hope they can recover.

And by the time a weeks-old baby pit bull mix was brought in to the vet, she was in such poor shape after being hit by a car that everyone was sure the best thing to do was put her out of her misery and put her to sleep since she was in critical condition.

The baby, who had been born a stray, had been hit by a car, which had shattered her pelvis, hip, and leg and was left to die. By the time animal control officers even found her, she had been lying in excruciating pain for days all alone, and they figured she was already dead.

Photo by Friends to the Forlorn

When they realized she was still breathing, they carried her as gently as possible to the vet, where she could finally be put out of her misery. “Basically animal control made the decision to put the dog down,” said Jason Flatt, founder of Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue. “They picked the dog up and the dog was suffering.”

The vet agreed that putting her down was the only option, but just before he was about to do it, the puppy, who they named Eve, wagged her tail as best as she could and kissed the vet.

The vet reached out to Jason and explained Eve’s situation, and he was happy to take her in despite facing $9,000 in medical bills to heal. Miraculously, however, just a month later Eve’s bones had healed by themselves and now only requires one $2,100 operation to place a metal plate over her leg bone

Keep up to date with Eve’s progress and help support her recovery here.

20-Year-Old Won’t Let Chronic Illness Stop Her From Rocking A Bikini

[Sara's Army]

Can you imagine being unable to eat like a normal person? For most of us, this would be a true nightmare, but for 20-year-old Sara Gebert, this is reality.

Two years ago, Sara was diagnosed with Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction (CIPO) and Gastroparesis, according to her website, Sara’s Army. “These conditions are so severe she is considered to be in intestinal failure. She is fed overnight straight into her heart with Total Parenteral Nutriton (IV nutrition),” she wrote. “She has to drain her stomach 24/7 because her body is unable to contain its own digestive contents. Without the bag draining her stomach, she will throw up, sometimes over 60 times a day even on a completely empty stomach.”

0504131316
[Sara’s Army]
Sara explained that her condition feels like waking up every morning to the worst flu of your life. Yet, despite Sara’s difficulties, that hasn’t faltered her confidence or stopped her from being herself. In the following letter Sara wrote for The Mighty, she describes how special it was when a stranger came up to her on the beach and thanked her for rocking her bikini.

[The Mighty]
[The Mighty]
I don’t know how hard it was for you to approach me on the beach, but I know I have a hard time talking to strangers. But you waltzed up to me with such confidence that nobody would have ever expected a confidence problem with either one of us, especially since I have to carry myself with such an aura of it. You saw me for who I really was — a scared girl who was trying so hard to not let anyone see the fear in her eyes.

I don’t know if that’s why you came up to me or not, but I want to thank you. Living with a chronic illness is no easy feat, and it gets even harder when that illness changes your outer appearance as much as mine has. With clothes on, no one can tell that I’m anything but a “typical” person, but on the beach it’s a whole different story.

No filter can hide the bags under my eyes. I'm so sick I haven't moved in days. 😔😭👎

A photo posted by Sara (@sgebert13) on

Everyone is exposed on the beach, but I literally have to “let it all hang out.” I have an ileostomy, a G-tube and a J-tube, not something you see every day. I’m used to them — to me they’re normal. But to everyone else, I’m something out of a science fiction movie. But you, you saw me as a person. You didn’t stare at my equipment, you looked me in the eye. And then — you thanked me.

Ugh really not feeling good 😭😴 hopefully I'll be able to try and get some sleep tonight.

A photo posted by Sara (@sgebert13) on

I’m not sure you could tell, but I was stunned. I’ve had people approach me and call me gross or ask me, “Are you really going in the pool like that?” And when you came up to me, I was preparing for the worst. But what came next still has me in awe. You thanked me for rocking my bikini, told me about how you used to have an ileostomy as well and how you no longer have a large intestine. You told me I was inspiring. That honestly meant the world to me.

When I was packing for that trip, I agonized for hours about what bathing suits to bring. I actually brought every bathing suit I owned and money to buy a new one because I didn’t think I had the right one to hide everything. That morning I made a last minute decision to just wear my bikini as if I didn’t have any extra parts on my belly. I was so nervous. Every teenage girl can have body image issues, and since getting my ostomy, mine have been multiplied by 100. We hadn’t been on the beach long when you approached me, and I was already feeling uncomfortable, thinking all eyes were on my ostomy. But after speaking with you for those few short minutes, all my worries melted away. At that moment, I realized what I look like doesn’t matter, and for the rest of vacation, my only bathing suit issue was that I had severely over-packed and probably didn’t need nearly as many as I had brought!

So thank you. Thank you for restoring my faith in the good of people. Thank you for allowing me to feel comfortable in my own skin. And finally, thank you for giving me the confidence to enjoy my vacation to the fullest extent.

Any Dog Can Bite Your Child. Here Are 5 Tips To Keep Them Safe!

0
0

Just about every time you hear about someone’s pet dog biting them or another person, their owner will say that it was completely out of character for their canine companion.

While this may be true for some dogs, the truth is that even the most well-trained and best-behaving dogs bite sometimes. Dogs will most often bite when they are being taunted, afraid, startled, woken up from a nap, or in pain and just don’t have another way to express it. As adults, we know not to corner a dog, surprise them, or threaten them in any way, but dogs can often mistake childrens’ playful behavior as dangerous.

There is no doubt that most family dogs are loving protectors who would never hurt your little one, but that doesn’t mean it will never happen… or that someone else’s dog won’t. Luckily, there are many things we can do to help keep our older kids safe and prevent our dogs from hurting our young babies.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]

Here are some ways parents can minimize the risk of dog bites for their children, via Statesman Journal:

1. Don’t push the baby at the dog.

Would you push the baby toward the butcher block full of knives? Toward a fireplace? Of course not. So don’t push it at the dog. Teach it to leave the dog alone, right from the start. Babies don’t have much in the way of fine motor control. They grab. Even an infant, if you put your finger in its tiny hand, will latch on. So if you push them at the dog, they pull its fur. No one likes having their hair pulled.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]

2. Set up safe places for the dog.

As baby turns to crawling, then to a toddler, the dog needs a place to get away. Lurching, tumbling babies are scary. They can easily fall over onto a sleeping dog, and startled dogs can bite in reflex. Use baby gates to keep the dog and baby apart.

3. Supervise.

Once the child is more stable, begin to introduce respectful interactions. Have the child toss a ball for the dog, or hold one end of a rope toy for the dog to pull, while the child is safely contained on your lap. Unless you are actively supervising, separate them. “Actively” means not watching TV or playing on your phone, by the way.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]

4. Set up successes.

If the child wants to help walk the dog, great. Use two leashes. Attach both leashes to the collar and let the child hold one while you hold the other so you have control of the dog. If they want to use the tennis-ball launcher, great. You stand right there with the dog treats and reward the dog for dropping the ball well out of range of any wild swings. The child wants to feed the dog? Teach him the “find it” game, and let the child toss the kibble one piece at a time for the dog to “find,” or, for an older child, have them hide kibble in another room while you keep the dog occupied. They can stand in the doorway and praise the dog for finding the food they have hidden. These games involve the child while keeping the dog well away from the food in their hands. The games also help the dog associate the child with positives (aka food).

5. Teach respect.

This is important for your own dog as well as when you are out and about. Don’t let your child rush up to a strange dog. Teach them to ask the owner before approaching or touching a dog. It’s also important that they never go up to a dog that’s alone, since you don’t know how it will react. Dogs chained in a yard are the most likely to bite, by the way.

Mom Is Furious At School For Fat-Shaming Her Healthy 4-Year-Old

Many new parents are obsessed with tracking and measuring their child to make sure they are meeting all the milestones at the right time, but as all parents quickly find out, babies and kids develop and grow at vastly different rates.

While the average four-year-old weighs about 4o pounds and stands at about 40 inches tall, 38-year-old mother-of-two Kim wasn’t concerned that her 4-year-old daughter, who turns five in a month, was a few pounds heavier since she has a well-balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables and is very active.

Gracie James-Coggins loves to swim, take gymnastics classes each week, and play outside on her trampoline almost every day, however, after being weighed at preschool one day, the council sent home a letter explaining that at 48 pounds she was obese and at risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and ‘low self-esteem’ because of her weight.

Kim was understandably furious at the school since her little girl is just four-years-old and is perfectly healthy. “Anyone looking at her can see she is a healthy young girl,” Kim said. “As a mum you always try to do your best to make sure your child is healthy, so to be told this is very upsetting. She plays on her big trampoline every day and is constantly running, skipping and cartwheeling and doesn’t get out of breath. On Saturday she completed a two-mile route doing Race for Life.”

“I feel this really needs to be stopped – labelling children as obese because an out-dated chart says that they shouldn’t be that weight. Me and her dad are quite tall, so to compare Gracie to a child who might have shorter parents and be a smaller build just seems ridiculous.”

“I’ve always battled with my weight so I was really conscious with Gracie that I didn’t want her to go through the same thing I have,” said Kim, who has chosen not to tell her little girl about the letter because she knows how damaging this title can be on a young girl’s self-esteem.

Normally, when someone breaks into your car, it’s going to make you very, very angry, but one group of thieves unknowingly did their good deed for the day when trying to steal a parked vehicle in Chicago.

According to AOL.com, a security camera from local bar the Irish Nobleman Pub caught a robbery in action…and a rescue as well. The footage showed the group looking into a parked truck on the street, walking past it before smashing a window. The thieves grabbed the victims laptop from the truck and ran off.

However, when the thieves broke in to grab the lap top, the smashed window created an escape for the owner’s German Shepherd who was baking in the overheated truck.

“If the window wasn’t broken the dog would probably be dead,” Declan Morgan, owner of the Irish Nobleman Pub, told AOL. “The dog was in the backseat. They didn’t realize the dog was in there. The windows were tinted in the back.”

According to the camera, Morgan said the poor dog was stuck in the car for 20 minutes before the thieves broke the window, but the truck’s owner didn’t return until 40 minutes later.

While the owner was probably a little annoyed about his truck, he should be counting his lucky stars his dog is alive today and that he wasn’t the one who cops were looking for.

2-Year-Old Bitten By Deadly Snake In The Backyard

Any parent can tell the difference between the sound of a fake, over dramatic cry that results from a temper tantrum, and a real cry that results from actual pain and harm. And one dad was stunned when he heard his daughter’s real cry since she was safely playing outside in the backyard.

Two-year-old Riley Stone had been outside in the backyard at her uncle’s house in North Carolina playing safely with her cousins. Dad Mike Stone could see the children playing outside, and thought there was nothing to worry about. However, when he heard Riley scream, he knew something was very wrong.

“Everybody hears their kid cry; there’s the fake cry and then there’s the real cry, and this was definitely the blood-curdling scream,” said Stone.

As he sprinted out to his little girl, he saw her entire right leg was covered in blood, and when he wiped it away, he saw the two bite marks and realized she had been bitten. He had no idea what kind of snake was responsible for the bite, but as Riley’s eyes started to glaze over, he knew it was likely venomous.

Riley was rushed to the hospital to get antivenom and get stabilized, but was then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center for specialized care once they realized she had been bitten by the deadly timber rattlesnake. “A timber rattlesnake can kill you,” Dr. Sean Bush said. “Especially a big timber rattlesnake in a small child like this.”

Riley spent eight days at the hospital, and has finally been cleared to go home, however, it will take up to six months for her to recover, and will likely have scarring on her leg from the accident, as well as permanent numbness.

Rahma-Haruna

It’s hard to imagine a life without the use of our bodies, but as you can see in the following shocking video, many of us are taking these basic functions for granted.

At first glance, 19-year-old Rahma Haruna from Kano, Nigeria, may look like a normal teenager, but her life is far from average. When Rahma was about six months old, her body stopped growing at a normal pace and her arms and legs did not develop like they should. Due to the poor health care options in Nigeria, Rahma could not get the help she needed.

[BARCROFT]

Unable to transport her any other way, Rahma’s family came up with the idea to transport the shrunken girl in a small bowl on top of a wheelchair. Although they have never stopped searching for a cure to help Rahma, whose condition often makes her tiny limbs ache with brutal pain, doctors have yet to come up with an answer or a cure.

Yet despite her painstaking and bizarre condition, Rahma remains positive that she can live a normal life, dreaming about the future and hoping to someday open her own store.

“I thank God in everything I do,” Rahma says in the following video. “I want to start a business. A grocery store and anything people buy, that is what I want.”

Parents Are Going Crazy Over New Doll That Helps Children Fall Asleep

One of the biggest challenges new parents face is getting their child to fall asleep.

Often your baby will want to sleep with you, or won’t sleep through the night, but a genius new invention is changing that. This sleep-inducing doll is called a Lulla Doll, and it was created by Eyrun Eggertsdottir, a mother of two who specializes in psychology. Being a woman who understands the positive effects that being close to a caregiver during sleep can have on babies, Eggertsdottir designed this doll to simulate the breathing and heartbeat of a person at the push of a button.

As described on the website, “when the chest is pressed, Lulla plays a real-life recording of the breathing and heartbeat of a mother at rest. Her name is Gudrun, she is a dear friend, a mother of four and a Kundalini yoga teacher.”

The Lulla doll is a soft doll made from natural cotton and hypoallergenic, ultra-fine microfiber and it replicates human sounds that help babies feel like they’re sleeping beside a loved one.

According to Eggertsdottir, if parents rub the doll against their skin, it will absorb their scent, and will help their child feel safe and secure.

Eggertsdottir told US Weekly that the idea of the Lulla doll came to her after a friend gave birth to a baby girl prematurely and had to leave her alone in a hospital every night for two weeks. There are some similar products on the market such as Sleep Sheep, but Eggersdottir says Lulla stands out because it’s designed to help little ones sleep longer.

As for the price of the Lulla doll, you can preorder one for $71 on Indiegogo, expected to be available October 2016. It was through a crowdfunding campaign that Eggertsdottir raised $331,489 to help manufacture the doll

Parents Arrested For Leaving Toddler Home Alone To Play ‘Pokémon Go’

If you absolutely had no other choice in life than to abandon your child at home, we’d hope it’s for a true emergency… not like the selfish and foolish reason that landed one Arizona couple in jail.

Twenty-seven-year-old Brent Daley and his wife, 25-year-old Brianna are in hot water with local police after a neighbor found their 2-year-old son home alone to do something that the sheriff told ABC 11 was “beyond comprehension.” Much like this shocking story of a baby found in the road, the Daley’s young son was left alone for a very disturbing reason.

The Pinal County sheriff’s office said the Phoenix couple left the toddler home alone, wearing nothing but a diaper and T-shirt, so they could chase characters for the wildly popular Pokemon Go gaming app.

Police arrived around 10:30 p.m. to find the baby boy crying and screaming for his parents outside their home. The front door was left open and temperatures were still around 100 degrees, according to Fox 10.

“I think it is awful. I think your child should come before a video game,” said Katie Young of San Tan Valley told Fox 10.

The Daleys, who claimed they had originally left home to get gas, before admitting to their wild Pokemon Go chase. They have been accused of child neglect and child endangerment, and their son has been turned over to the state’s child-protection agency.

The popular game has cause a lot of concern with police, who fear for people’s safety while playing it, but that putting the game before a child is a new low.

“We never would have imagined that parents would abandon a child to play ‘Pokemon Go,'” he said. “This goes beyond comprehension.”

5 Signs Your Child Is Dehydrated

shutterstock_318951704

With temperatures surging all over the country this summer, it’s more important to keep yourself and your family healthy and hydrated, but do you know what to look out for to protect your kids from serious dehydration?

According to EatRight.org, “to get enough water, your child or teen should drink at least six to eight cups of water a day and eat the recommended number of servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Also, pay special attention to your child’s or teen’s water consumption when he or she is physically active.”

However, every parent knows it can be difficult to get your kid to chug water, no matter how hot is it outside. “Children are much more prone to dehydration than adults because their bodies don’t cool down as efficiently, and they are never more at risk than during the heat of summer,” says Parents.com. That’s exactly why it’s so important to have water, as well as Gatorade or other sports drinks, Pedialyte, ice pops, and even coconut water to quench your kid’s thirst.

Here are 5 signs to watch out for to prevent dehydration in your child, thanks to Mom.me:

Crankiness

If your kid is ever just having “one of those days,” the remedy may be as simple as a glass of water. Irritability is a telltale sign of mild to moderate dehydration, according to MayoClinic.org, so next time you find yourself wondering what the heck got into your kid, the answer may actually lie in what hasn’t gotten into your kid. (Water!)

Having a low-key kid can be nice, but if it’s due to dehydration, don’t let it slide.

Fatigue

The dog days of summer may cause you and your kids to spend some lazy days on the couch, but if you notice a marked decline in your child’s energy level, you might want to give some thought to how much water you’ve seen them drink lately. Having a low-key kid can be nice, but if it’s due to dehydration, don’t let it slide.

Dry Skin

If your child is still in diapers, checking her skin has is probably second nature. But irritation of the skin and dryness is a sign that there is not enough moisture in the body, regardless of the person’s age. If you notice your kid scratching a lot, they may need to be drinking more water.

Constipation

Pretty much every parent I know is an expert in their child’s bowels. The timing and consistency of bowel movements are good in decay and health, and sometimes health issues. When a child is dehydrated, her stool can become more dry and difficult to move, which in turn causes constipation.

Headache

This one is a little harder to pin down, but if your child is older and can tell you that their head hurts, the culprit could be dehydration. I personally have suffered from various types of headaches my entire life, so I can tell a dehydration headache from a sinus headache, however there’s a good chance your little one can’t. If his head hurts for no apparent reason, have him chug some water and see if it doesn’t let up within a couple hours.

This Dog’s Legs May Be Broken, But His Spirit Isn’t

A 9-month-old puppy from Thailand had his front paws chopped off with a sword because he chewed on a neighbor’s pair of shoes.

This sweet and resilient dog is named Cola, and he was sadly attacked by a heartless neighbor last May.

The man responsible for the attack was handed a one-month sentence under the Animal Welfare Act of 2014, and the pooch was taken to a specialist clinic in Bangkok, where he has had time to recover from the incident.

A few weeks later, Soi Dog co-founder Gill Dalley flew to Bangkok to get Cola and bring him to the charity’s main site in Phuket. It was there that Cola was fitted with prosthetics legs to give him a second chance at life.

A spokesman for the Soi Dog Foundation says: “Cola has come a long way since that horrific incident last May but, without the people like you who make up our Emergency Response Team, he would most likely not be alive today.”

5 Tell-Tale Signs Your Child May Have Allergies

0

cover

If you’re worried that there might be more to your child’s cough than a common cold, it’s possible your child may be suffering from allergies.

Family doctor Dr. Roxanne MacKnight says, “I’m definitely seeing more kids with allergies these days. But I think we’re just diagnosing them more accurately now.” Common triggers in children are environmental factors like dust, mould, and pollen, but here’s how to spot them if they do appear.

5 Tell-Tale Signs Your Child May Have Allergies:

1. Mom or dad has allergies

Along with passing down genes, parents can pass down their predisposition to allergies to their kids. Family history is, in fact, one of the greatest predictors of allergies in children, and allergic kids can often come from allergic parents. Dr. Roxanne MacKnight says, “The genetic link won’t guarantee a certain allergy is passed along, though similar allergies tend to run in families.”

2. A cough that’s triggered when your child cries, laughs or becomes nervous

If your child has a cough that persists for weeks or months and is accompanied by other cold-like symptoms, it may be a sign of asthma triggered by dust, pollen, pollution or pets. The first thing you should do is pay attention to what triggers this, and what time of year it is. You also want to write off that it’s not a cold or virus caused by common germs at daycare.

3. Shortness of breath and wheezing

While many children who wheeze don’t necessarily have asthma, it’s usually a good predictor of the allergy. If it looks like your child is working hard to get air in and out, and their lungs are hyperinflating (with their chest and shoulder puffed out), this might be a big clue. The best thing you can do if you notice this is to make an appointment with your child’s doctor.

4. A dry, scaly itchy skin rash, known as eczema

Eczema can be triggered by certain foods in your baby’s diet, but it can also be an inherited condition. Luckily for parents, 80% of children with eczema will outgrow it, but once it disappears, it may make way for another type of allergy. Allergist Dr. Zave Chad says, “We call this evolution from one allergy to another the ‘allergic march.’” In this case, it’s best to do a skin test for your child.

5. Vomiting and abdominal pain after eating

When a child has a food allergy, there’s no delay to the symptoms, and they usually appear quickly and within minutes to a half hour. Common food triggers in infants include milk, nuts, eggs, soy and sesame. If this is the case, you should consult with your child’s doctor immediately.

Are there any signs we may have missed?
