A mockingbird at the California Wildlife Center got a second chance at walking last week when she got her own pair of custom-designed ‘snowshoes’.

The bird was suffering from an unknown injury that had caused her feet to knuckle. This is a common condition that causes the birds feet to curl unnaturally. It makes it difficult for birds to perch, grasp onto things, and walk.

Fortunately, this is a pretty easy problem to fix. All it takes is a little creativity, ingenuity, and in this case, some cardboard. The result is pretty darn adorable too.

“We needed to train her feet back to how they should be,” CWC veterinarian Duane Tom told The Dodo. “Essentially, we used pieces of cardboard to tape her toes into their proper position. It usually takes a week or two of wearing the snowshoes before their feet are back to normal.”

We’re happy to report that the mockingbird’s feet were successfully treated thanks to that cute bit of ingenuity — so things are now looking up for her. As Tom notes, nearly all the birds treated for knuckled feet at CWC are able to be released back into the wild.

We’re thrilled this bird is on the right track to recovery.

Mockingbird Gets A Second Chance After Hero Crafts ‘Snowshoes’ For Her is an article from: LifeDaily

The Broadway hit musical “Alexander Hamilton” opens in Chicago on September 27. But, in a sense, Alexander is already in the city; at Lincoln Park Zoo.

The baby Bactrian camel calf born last month at the zoo is being called “Alexander Camelton.”

Only a month old and already the young star has a leg up on life. He’s named after a revolutionary war hero and one of America’s founding fathers. He will also be in the thoughts of all Broadway in Chicago music lovers.

“We’ve have been really surprised at the response that people have thought about this name,” Boehm said.

You can see the Alexander Camelton and the four other Bactrian camels in the Antelope-Zebra area of Lincoln Park Zoo.

“We have a baby Bactrian camel born May 9th. He was born at about 81 pounds, four feet tall, tall gangly legs and the kid has doing very, very well,” Dan Boehm, zoological manager at Lincoln Park Zoo, said.

The Bactrian camel is the two hump version of this species. The one humper, or dromedary is the famous Sahara Desert camel. These two-humpers are all weather creatures from mountainous regions of places like Afghanistan.

Like all creatures born at the zoo, the new calf has to have a name. Some people weighed in on possible baby names for the camel.

Angela the Camel, Humpty Dumpty, Caramel and John were suggestions.

All nice suggestions but a special baby like this couldn’t just be another Humpty Dumpty or John.

Pre-teens and teenagers are often fearless, extremely impressionable, and desperate to fit in, which is why they’re so easily influenced to play seemingly innocent games by their peers.

However, one South Caroline dad is now warning parents how dangerous some school games can be for kids who don’t fully understand the consequences of their actions after his 11-year-old son Garret Pope Jr. was found dead just a few weeks into the new school year.

“I know that there are a lot of rumors out there at to what happened, and my family would like to share some words of caution,” dad Garrett Pope wrote in a post to Facebook, which has since gone viral. “The Lancaster County Coroners office has determined that this was an accidental death caused by him playing something called ‘The Choking Game’. It is where kids cut off their airwaves just enough to get a sense of euphoria. I’m including a link here for more information.”

Pope has no idea where his son learned about this deadly game, which has been played by school kids for decades, but is fairly sure he must have learned about it from other students at his school. “Our tablets and computers show no online research that he might have done,” Pope explained.

Despite the incredible amount of pain and grief Pope and his family are going through, they are sharing their story to warn other parents to talk to their children and do everything possible to make sure they never make the same mistake their son did.

“Please know that his senseless death was not intentional. He took this terrible “game” too far. My family has never felt pain like this before, and we don’t anyone else to go through what we are going through. Please talk about this with your kids, and do everything you can to prevent a similar tragedy. He was so young and impressionable, he didn’t know what he was doing, and made a terrible mistake,” Pope wrote.

Dad Warns Parents After Son Dies From ‘Choking Game’ is an article from: LifeDaily

Despite clear and frequent warnings from doctors about how dangerous and even deadly co-sleeping can be for a baby, one Pennsylvania mother decided to ignore doctors and nurses because she felt she knew what was best for her own child.

In 2011, mom Jessica Harper tragically lost her two-month-old son Nicholas after placing him on the couch covered in a blanket to sleep. While baby and Harper’s three other kids slept, she had gone upstairs and only remembered to check on the baby two hours later. She found him unresponsive and blue on the couch, and had to serve 85 days in jail because he dies by “positional asphyxiation.”

Harper had been haunted by what happened to her baby boy and when she gave birth to another son two months ago, she was determined to never leave her baby alone like that as he slept. “[Jessica] was fearful that she wouldn’t be there if he needed her, especially after what happened to the last one. She had been having bad dreams about it,” Haper’s mother said.

After giving birth to baby Hunter, doctors and nurses made Haper watch safety videos, explained how dangerous co-sleeping was, and even made her sign documents saying she understood the dangers. Harper dismissed every warning, and decided co-sleeping was the best option for her newborn son.

Tragically, however, at 2 months old, Hunter was found dead after co-sleeping in between Harper and her three-year-old daughter. Harper is now being charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child, and is facing 20-40 years in prison.

“The reason she did it, I truly believe, is that she thought he was safer with her than on his own,” Harper’s mom said.

Mom Charged With Murder After Second Baby Dies While Sleeping is an article from: LifeDaily

Every parent has heard daycare horror stories where innocent children tragically get hurt, abused, or even die at the hands of the daycare workers. However, like most parents, one Utah mom never imagined something like that would ever happen to her children.

In fact, when mom-of-four Danielle Sanchez dropped her soon to be 2-year-old little boy at the West Jordan Child Center like she did every other day, she was concerned with organizing his birthday party and had no idea that he tragically would never make it to his second birthday on September 17th.

While at daycare, 1-year-old Leonardo had crawled underneath a bean bag chair and was trapped underneath when an employee sat down on top of it. “It’s a tragedy, it’s a tragedy what happened,” Sanchez said. “It’s rough because you don’t know when the last time is you are going to hold your child.”

“He was a cute bundle of joy, he brought a lot of love,” Sanchez said about Leonardo, who ultimately suffocated under the chair as the daycare worker sat and read a story to the rest of the class never realizing that Leonardo was not only missing but dying underneath her.

“It just baffles me, makes me wonder, she must not have felt him, she must not have heard him,” Sanchez said. “In my mind: My child is in your care, he suffocated under a bean bag, how does a 2-year-old, not even 2 yet, how does he get stuck under a bean bag? Something happened, I don’t know what.”

The family is seeking legal representation since they believe the accident could have been prevented, but is planning to hold his funeral on his birthday, and is asking guests to bring him a birthday present, which they will donate to patients at the children’s hospital.

1-Year-Old Suffocates Under Bean Bag Chair At Daycare is an article from: LifeDaily

When Peanut the chihuahua ate a cookie that didn’t belong to him, he got very, very high. 

Peanut’s owner, Reddit user Choices63, explains that they had an overnight guest, and Peanut found his stash and ate an entire weed-laced cookie. “He actually dug it out of a duffel bag. Had to work hard to get it. It was the cookie he was after, not the weed,” Choices63 wrote. 

Unfortunately, the large amount of THC did not react well with little peanut, and he became unable to stand and was very paranoid. Besides being a really bad high, Peanut’s health was also at risk. 

Peanut’s owner took him to a local university vet medical school and wrote: “He only weighs 6 lbs so we were concerned about how much he had, plus there was some chocolate in the cookie so just wanted to be safe. What was funny is they weren’t phased at all — clearly not the first time they had seen a stoned animal.”

Vets induced Peanut to throw up what was left of the cookie, and was fed activated charcoal to absorb what toxins remained in his body. 

Ten hours later, Peanut was discharged and seemed pretty normal by the time he got home. 

The moral of the story here is be careful what you leave laying around your house. And if your dog ever actually eats something they shouldn’t, be honest with your vet about what happened, because it is the only way your pet can be diagnosed.

Both students and school faculty are required to dress modestly and appropriately, which is why some parents were outraged after seeing what their children’s school teacher was wearing to work every day in the classroom.

Since the school year began, teacher Paris Monroe has been uploading photos of some of her work outfits to her personal Instagram page since she puts in a lot of effort to look presentable at work. Most days, she wears knee-length dresses or skirts with a high collared top with ballet flats or sometimes a pair of heels.

For most, this is perfectly acceptable, however, after her pictures started going viral online, many strangers started slamming the teacher for her ‘distracting’ and ‘inappropriate’ wardrobe. Others, on the other hand, were quick to defend the naturally curvy teacher’s looks had nothing to do with her teaching ability.

“I just wish they would respect me and focus on the positive and what truly matters—which is educating the children of the future generations and providing and caring for them,” said Monroe, who is just trying to do her job, and was recently awarded teacher of the month at her school.

Teacher Goes Viral For Wearing ‘Inappropriate’ Clothing To School is an article from: LifeDaily

Anyone who spends any amount of time around small children will know how wild their imaginations are and how much they make things up, which is why one school teacher didn’t think anything of it when one of her students told her she was a ‘funny color’.

UK teacher Emma Gregson spent her days surrounded by a bunch of 9-year-olds and was used to hearing her students make strange comments, however, after looking in the mirror later that day, she realized that her skin and eyes were an odd yellow tint.

The 36-year-old decided to make an appointment with her doctor to make sure everything was fine. “I had always been fine and healthy before then so I was not unduly worried,” Gregson said. Besides the yellow tinted skin and eyes, Gregson had been feeling tired but figured it was work related. “I had just started my new job so I put the tiredness down to this.”

At first, Gregson’s doctor thought there might be a problem with her gall bladder, but scans at the hospital revealed her liver had completely failed because on autoimmune hepatitis. Without a transplant, she had only one week to live.

“It was very frightening to be told you only have seven days to live, I cried’ she said. “It is a strange situation to be in as everything is out of your control and you can’t do anything.” Luckily, doctors found a transplant just in time, and Gregson was hope recuperating just nine days after surgery.

“I talked about what happened to me and the transplant quite openly at school and explained it to people,” said Gregson, who is sharing her story to remind people of how important it is to be organ donors. “It was a bit of a shock for the pupils but they have been really good and are always very careful with germs and use hand gel as they know my immune system is lowered because of the anti-rejection medication I am on.”

Teacher Found Out She’s Dying After Student Told Her She Looked Yellow is an article from: LifeDaily

Even though summer is over for most kids who have been making their way back to the classroom these past few weeks, the heat is just as strong and unbearable in many places across the country.

Because of the stifling South Carolina heat, mom Alicia Rogers picked a pair of athletic shorts and a tank top for her daughter to wear to school, but made sure to follow every rule in the handbook regarding her daughter’s outfit. “It meets the ‘three finger’ rule for the width of the tank-top that her school has always used. It is not a spaghetti-strap tank top. And it certainly does not bare any stomach or midriff. It is workout/sports attire that is perfectly acceptable for the environment we live in, which is a hot, humid summer day in South Carolina,” she explained.

Yet when 10-year-old Jordynn got to class that morning, her teacher pulled her aside to shame her for her ‘inappropriate’ outfit. “‘Do you know what I’m about to say?!’ And Jordynn clearly confused, replied no. ‘Your shirt is very inappropriate.’ And told her she would need to go to the nurse to change/cover up,” Rogers said.

Jordynn went straight to the nurse, who gave her the choice of a long sleeve shirt, which she didn’t want because it looked boyish, and a plain zip-up jacket. “I think in the moment, she wasn’t thinking what would be most weather appropriate. She was just so embarrassed and caught off guard by the whole situation, that she was trying to go with what looked least embarrassing to her,” Rogers said.

For the rest of the day, Jordynn was mortified as kids kept asking if she was in trouble. And when she was going out to recess, the same teacher tracked her down and told her she was not allowed to take the jacket off while outside in the 95-degree heat.

Once Rogers came to pick her daughter up at the end of the day, her fifth grader broke down in tears explaining how she got in trouble and forced to wear the hot jacket. Rogers immediately called the teacher and later met with the principal, however, they never once apologized for what happened or admitted that it should have been handled differently.

“Does anybody get how NOT okay this is? How shaming these young girls, their bodies, their attire, and forcing them to hide their bodies is FAR more of a distraction and detriment to their education and to their peers’ education than the opposite,” Rogers wrote in a post to her Facebook. “And please, let’s not forget folks, this is a 10-year-old little girl. She is a GOOD, respectful student, who is never anything but kind, pleasant and appropriate to both her teachers and peers when in the classroom setting. The message that was sent to my daughter today was: How you look is MORE important than your education.”

10-Year-Old Shamed By Teacher For Wearing Tank Top To Class is an article from: LifeDaily

Moms only want what’s best for their children, and will do whatever they can to make sure they grow up in a safe and healthy environment, which is why many moms choose to pay a little bit more for ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ baby products.

California mom Theresa Jones trusted that products sold in stores for children that were marketed as ‘chemical-free’ and ‘organic’ were the safest option for her baby boy, and was always happy to pay the premium price since it meant she was buying quality products that would never cause her little boy any harm.

Yet when Jones gave her 2-year-old son Hunter Jones a bath one night back in May 2015, he ended up being scarred for life thanks to Babyganic’s ‘tear-free’ shampoo. During the bath, Jones and a friend had used the shampoo to wash Hunter’s hair, but he started crying in pain when bubbles rain down his face and into his eyes.

Jones tried to rinse out Hunter’s eyes with water, but nothing seemed to help the 2-year-old, who was left wincing in pain. By the next morning, Hunter still couldn’t open his eyes, and while attempting to help open them, Jones noticed they were completely red.

The terrified mom rushed her son to the hospital, where he was given some drops and was prescribed a strong steroid, but his symptoms only worsened. Eventually, a surgeon discovered that the shampoo had caused Hunter to have ‘bilateral chemical burns’  that covered 90% of his corneas.

“Hunter suffered debilitating pain, could not open his eyes for nearly a week and, according to his treating physician, will now face the specter of lifelong problems with his eyes,” the family’s lawsuit against Babyganics explained. “I can’t tell you how devastating it is as a mother to know that I used a product that created irreparable damage to my son’s eyes,” Theresa said. “I was led to believe that this ‘tear free’ shampoo was natural and safe and I spent more money on it because of it. This product is not safe. Hunter will suffer for the rest of his life with vision issues and it’s made all the more tragic because Babyganics knows this product was defective and it never should have been sold – and yet they still haven’t taken it off the market.”

Toddler Suffers Chemical Burns From ‘Organic’ Baby Shampoo is an article from: LifeDaily

Superman may not wear one on his utility belt, but maybe he should start after a few California police officers rescued a kitten with the help of half-eaten Mexican food.

Officers Jimenez and Corona of the Parlier Police Department in California used a piece of “partially eaten” burrito to lure the hungry animal from the pipes, the department said on Facebook.

The rescue effort on Monday also included some meowing by the officers, according to NBC-affiliate KCRA. That meowing can be heard in the video the police department posted to their Facebook page, which the officers captured as they tried to lure the cat from its tight predicament. The kitten is now safe and in the care of Parlier Animal Control, according to police.

Two Officers Save Kittens Life With Help From A Burrito is an article from: LifeDaily

A Maryland school bus driver is being hailed as a hero after she rescued 20 elementary school kids from a burning school bus.

The bus she was driving caught fire one Monday, according to WTVR. The driver, identified by a parent as Reneita Smith, safely got each and every student off of the bus and away from danger.

“Reneita [not only] took each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning.”

“I am a mom of two kids,” Kabir recalled Smith saying as the bus burned. “It’s my job to save them.”

Video captured by a firefighter’s dashboard camera showed smoke and flames coming from the empty school bus.

Hero Bus Driver Pulls Children From Burning School Bus; Says It’s ‘Her Job’ To Save Them is an article from: LifeDaily

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines last week when he sat on the sideline during the national anthem in an act of protest about police violence against people of color.

The protest turned the tradition of football into question and provoked further discussion. Days later, a freshman football team in Michigan made a powerful statement of its own about the importance of the national anthem at sporting events.

As first reported by MLive.com, the Lapeer freshman football team was upset that the Carman-Ainsworth High public address system would not play the national anthem before their game, so the athletes chose to sing it anthem themselves. The decision started with the team standing and saluting the flag, which inspired singing from the players themselves.

“We’re just super proud of our guys to overcome that situation and take it upon themselves to sing the national anthem. We couldn’t be prouder,” Lapeer High School athletic director Shad Spilski told MLive.com.

In fact, the Carman-Ainsworth sideline was clearly in support of hearing the national anthem, too, standing and saluting the flag while the Lapeer players sang, according to Lapeer’s head freshman coach.

“A lot of teenagers would be embarrassed to do that. I know I don’t like to hear myself sing, … I’m very, very proud of them.”

So were many of the parents in attendance, as the Facebook post above is testament to. If nothing else, the a cappella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner served as an inspiration for a number of athletes, fans and employees of a pair of Michigan schools with plenty more happy to know that it happened even if they weren’t there in person.

Freshman Football Team Sings National Anthem When None Is Played Before The Game is an article from: LifeDaily

If you are a mother, then you already knowing being a superhero is just a part of the job description.

But one Texas Mom is being hailed Superwoman after a photo of her went especially viral. For Melissa Wardlow of Grand Prairie, Texas this is just her daily life.

“I throw the kids on and away we go,” says Wardlow, whose husband Josh is a football coach at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield. “I started taking pictures before I had kids, and I was on the sideline when I was pregnant. It didn’t matter; I was on the sideline.”

Last Friday was just a typical night for this multitasking Mom when photographer John F. Rhodes shot a photo of Wardlow during the game he was shooting for The Dallas Morning News. It first appeared online in a Dallas Morning News tweet Friday night and went viral in a Facebook post.

It’s now racked up more than 7,000 shares, a fact that Wardlow didn’t even realize until people told her she had gone viral.

Wardlow isn’t on Facebook or Twitter, so she didn’t realize the picture was gaining traction.

What she did know is that “my phone has been blowing up since Saturday.” Her friends called her and texted her, “saying I was famous and basically [the photo] had gone viral,” the 32-year-old photographer said.

Despite juggling so much, this mother appears at ease and unflappable. Perhaps that’s what caused so many to share this on social media. Maybe her natural calmness struck a chord.

Kid-carting Photographer Is Called Superwoman; Says It’s Just A Normal Day is an article from: LifeDaily

When Jaime Ray Newman from Hope For Paws spotted a stray dog sleeping in a school yard, she knew she had to help him. 

Apparently, the white fluffy dog had been wandering the streets of Los Angeles for several weeks. The team decided that the best way to sneak up on the dog was to do it while he was asleep, and secure him with a gentle snare so he didn’t run away. 

Once Newman got the snare around him, she tried to feed the dog to calm his nerves and develop a level of trust. The dog was probably very hungry anyway, having to previously survive solely on scraps found on the street. 

When the dog heard the sounds of breaking glass, he got very scared and immediately tried to run. Once Newman was able to calm him down, she secured a leash around his neck and hugged him. 

She named the dog Seymour and took him to get a warm bubble bath and checked out at the vet. Once Seymour was given a clean bill of health, he went to foster with A.R. TN Paws Rescue and shortly after they found him a forever home!
