When 911 operators pick up an emergency call, they have no idea who they’ll be talking to or how dire the emergency is, and yet they have to stay calm no matter what the circumstance.

So when one Texas mom was working an overnight shift as an emergency 911 dispatcher, she was horrified when she picked up the phone and heard her own teen daughter’s voice on the other line but had to stay calm to save her and the rest of her family.

Layla Wray’s 14-year-old daughter quickly explained that a fire had started on the back porch of the family’s home and it started to spread towards the rest of the house. Despite her children and husband being in danger, Wray explained that she was able to stay calm because of her experience as a 911 operator.

Wray managed to stay in emergency operator mode the entire time except when her kids started fighting. “They were bickering and all of I sudden I was like, ‘look, we don’t have time for that, we have other things going on. I need to know what’s happening there, not what y’all little squabble is right now.’”

Thanks to Wray’s help the entire family and all of their dogs managed to get out safely, but unfortunately, by the time the fire department got to the home, the entire house was in flames and had burned to the ground by the time it was put out.

Watch the entire video below to see how this amazing 911 operator handled the stressful situation.

After a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Italy and left hundreds of people dead, one 8-year-old girl went missing and her family feared they would never see her alive again.

For 16 hours following the earthquake, there was no sign of the little girl named Georgia, who was in her home at the time. In order to better search for Georgia and others who were unaccounted for, the local emergency responders brought teams of canine sniffer dogs like a German Shepherd named Sarotti and a black Labrador Retriever named Leo to help look.

Even though they could see or hear anyone under the rubble, the teams hoped the dogs would be able to sniff people out since dogs have about 125 million to 300 million scent glands than humans. And just seconds after letting Leo search for Georgia, he was able to find her scent and lead rescuers to her.

“This is Leo, the four-and-a-half-year-old labrador from the search and rescue team of Pescara who found little Georgia yesterday,” officers Matteo and Liborio said. “Yesterday we were given the information that under a two-story collapsed house in Pescara del Tronto there were two missing girls. Immediately we went to the location and Leo, in less than 40 seconds, gave us a strong signal.

“With our colleagues from the Reparto Mobile Senigallia and the firemen, we dug with our bare hands for nine hours, and at the end we were able to find the girl.”

After a sewage manhole was left uncovered in Houston, an unlucky stray dog accidentally fell 20 feet to the bottom and was left stranded at the bottom of the cold, wet pipe.

No one knows how long the poor pointer mix was trapped in the sewer pipe, but thankfully its luck finally turned around when a contractor from the City of Houston Public Works and Engineering Department heard a faint whimper and found the desperate animal.

The team quickly got to work and lowered someone down with a blanket to catch the three-year-old and carefully carried him back up to safety.”He didn’t bark or try to bite, and seemed thankful to be in the Animal Control truck,” said Managing Engineer Steven Gee. “We gave him a blanket, clean water, and some dog food on his trip to BARC.”

The shelter named the dog Julian and immediately put him up for adoption after finding he was completely unharmed from the huge fall, but his rescuers, who preferred to call him ‘Sewer Sam,’ couldn’t forget about the sweet dog and came back to adopt him and make him part of their team.

“We are so excited to see Julian become a member of the Public Works team'” said Ashtyn Rivet, BARC Marketing and Outreach Manager. “Julian’s story is yet another reminder that City Departments work together to impact lives – both canine (and feline) and human!”

Cat Transforms After Five Pounds Of Matted Fur Is Shaved Off

As the elderly get older, it gets harder and harder for them to care for themselves, nevermind another living thing.

Last month, a 9-year-old cat was discovered in the basement of an elderly Illinois man’s house. The man could barely look after himself and it had been a long time since he could provide proper care to the cat named Sinbad, who was barely recognizable because of the mounds of matted, dirty fur covering his body.

Thankfully, the elderly man surrendered Sinbad to rescuers from the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, who quickly got to work freeing him from the matted fur. “It took two sittings. The first took several hours and the second sitting took about 2 hours,” Anti-Cruelty Society public relations manager Colette Bradley said. “He got tired after a while, but throughout the whole process came up to the people in the room looking for pets.”

By the end of his haircut, Sinbad had lost a shocking five pounds of matted fur. “He was a bit unsteady on his feet at first,” Bradley said. “He had very limited mobility prior to the hair being removed, so he had to relearn to walk on his back legs. He was very sensitive to touch but still sought out attention from people.”

The staff at the Anti-Cruelty Society then placed Sinbad with Elliott Serrano, who would foster him until they found a permanent home, however, Serrano soon fell in love with the cat and officially adopted him. “He’s doing very well!” Serrano said. “His personality really has blossomed! At first, he was very quiet and reserved. Now he runs around the house, chases his toys, and asks for affection more readily.”

Can you believe how different this cat looks after pounds of matted fur were finally shaved off? Let us know what you think in the comments below and please SHARE this with friends on Facebook.

Man Saves Dog Left To Die In The Snow Behind A Dumpster

Dogs are covered in a protective layer of fur that helps keep them safe and warm when exposed to the elements. However, their fur is not enough to keep them alive during freezing winter days and nights…

When one Connecticut Animal Control Officer discovered an abandoned pit bull trapped in cage, behind a dumpster one winter day he was struggling to stay alive. “It was probably 10 to 12° outside and it was very cold and the dog is very skinny. He was shivering,” said Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn.

“The dog was placed in a crate. All that was over the crate was a sheet. And the dog was exposed to all the elements in the rain and the cold,” said Godejohn. “The crate was not secure at all. There was no lock on the crate the crate had no floor to it.”

The officer quickly brought him to the shelter to warm up and gave the dog, who they named Charlie, some water and food. As of now, they don’t know who is responsible for abandoning Charlie, but once caught, the person faces a minimum $1,000 fine or as much as a year in jail.

Until then, the shelter is focusing on helping Charlie heal physically and emotionally from the trauma. “Maybe we can make the dog more comfortable and get him to trust us where we can make the dogs available for adoption,” said Godejohn.

Kind-Hearted USPS Carrier Donates Ramp For Old Dog

Some people simply do their job and go home, collecting a paycheck twice a month and leaving their problems at the door, while others go above and beyond…

Jeff Kramer is one of those guys who went above and beyond while on the job when he saw an elderly dog in need. During this deliveryman’s USPS route one day in Boulder, Colorado, Kramer stopped at a house on Bluebell Avenue and noticed a dog named Tashi.

Credit: DailyCamera Photo
Credit: DailyCamera Photo

“As fast as he could — which was not very fast — he ran up to me tail wagging, first day I met him. He’s just a really friendly dog. And I am a dog person, and they can tell,” Kramer told the Daily Camera

A bond was formed from that instant and every day on his route, Kramer makes sure to say hi to Tashi. “He would just come by every day and pet him,” said Tashi’s owner, Karen Dimetrosky. “Tashi would hang outside and would always get so excited when Jeff came. He would always try to pull me towards the mail truck.”

But, at 14-years-old, it is very difficult for Tashi to walk up and down the steps of the porch. “We are literally carrying him up and down the stairs,” Dimestrosky said. “And he weighs about 70 pounds.”

A couple of months ago, Kramer went from mailman to handyman and built a ramp for Tashi that allows him to go in and out of the house at his own leisure.

This also helps the family, as it was a strain on their backs to constantly carry the heavy dog up and down. “It’s incredible,” Dimestrosky said. “I can’t imagine not having the ramp now. It’s the only way he gets in and out.”

Kramer actually built the ramp for his own elderly dog, Odie, but since Odie passed away five years ago, the ramp has been sitting in Kramer’s backyard. When Kramer saw Tashi struggling with the porch stairs, he brought the ramp over.

“I just noticed they needed it,” Kramer said. “I didn’t need it anymore and I hate throwing things away.” But, even after Kramer dropped off the wood, it saw there for months. “We’re not very handy,” Dimetrosky said.

So without the family asking, Kramer came over on one of his days off and did it for them. “He’s just amazing,” Dimetrosky said. “We’ve had the ramp for a few months and he’s saved us.”

Watching your most prized possessions perish and digging through rubble is probably the last way anyone wants to ring in the new year, but this was the sad reality for a Kentucky man who returned home to a place he barely recognized.

Although material goods can all be replaced and time heals everything, one thing that could never be replaced from the fire that destroyed part of Adel Conley’s of Louisville home were his beloved dogs.

When Conley arrived at his home to see it engulfed in flames after spreading from a fire that broke out in his neighbor’s garage, his first thought was to rush in and try and save his two pit bulls.

[WAVE 3 News]
[WAVE 3 News]
“I wanted to get my dogs out, but they wouldn’t let me go in there,” Conley said to WAVE 3 News. “I love my dogs.”

That’s when firefighters told Conley they were only able to find and save one of his beloved canine companions.

“With the amount of fire we had and the amount you can see, just the amount of materials in that garage,” Lt. Col Jim Fredrick said to WAVE. “It’s not really easily accessible for us.”

[WAVE 3 News]
[WAVE 3 News]
Certain he was gone forever, Conley started to sift through the remnants the fire left behind when he and the responders discovered something they never saw coming.

As WAVE 3 News was conducting their live broadcast from the fire, everyone started to hear barking coming from Conley’s garage that was still smoldering.

Homelessness is a problem that stretches from the most affluent neighborhoods to the most remote villages in America.

It’s a serious issue that most people tend to ignore, but when one good Samaritan learned the story of a very sick man in her neighborhood and his very heartbreaking dying wish, she knew she had to help.

Jenine-Lacette DShazer discovered Clifford James Herbert and his dog Baby huddled up on a sidewalk in Fresno, California, with nothing else but one another. She offered him a few things she had in her car as the 60-year-old drifter told her about how he was a former farm worker now dying of terminal cancer. And all he wanted before his time was up was to find a home for his beloved pup.

[GoFundMe]
[GoFundMe]
“I would like to help this man, Cliff, feed and care for himself and his sweet pitty-Australian Shepherd mix puppy, Baby, one he rescued from a man beating her,” DShazer wrote on a Go Fund Me page to help the duo.

“Cliff cannot speak due to a tracheotomy and Baby is all but totally deaf, they are like hand in glove.”

[GoFundMe]
“Cliff only has six weeks to live, diagnosed with liver cancer, and wants to find a new home for her before he goes into the hospital.”

Thankfully, plenty of people were in a giving mood this holiday season and DShazer raised over $25,000 to help save Cliff and find a good home for the pup.

[GoFundMe]
“BABY HAS A NEW HOME!,” DShazer updated donors. “It is exactly the kind of home her trainer, her vet and Cliff and I wanted for her. Cliff has been struggling to care for her properly so the decision was made to move her sooner than planned.”

[GoFundMe]
[GoFundMe]
Because the poor man can’t care for his baby, she’s now with a younger family who have other pets and kids to play with as well as lots of land to run about.

“I hope you will consider opening your homes to other animals in need just waiting for you to notice them, as I did Cliff and Baby,” she added.

Talk about a sweet big bundle of joy! Loyalty Adonis Grover recently entered the world, making a much greater splash than his mother or her doctors could have ever imagined.

Loyalty is just one of many babies being born in the United States over 10 pounds. The alarming trend made headlines in 2016, with many newborns weighing in far above the 7 pound average.

“He was like, ‘That’s a big baby,’” Grover told WDSU of her husband’s stunned response. “I remember the nurse came running back and when she told me that, I swear, had I not been on the gurney already, I would’ve passed out right there when she said that.”

The baby boy was born 14.1 pounds and 22 inches, the fourth child for Ms. Grover, with her first two kids born of average weight and her third slightly more.

[WDSU]
[WDSU]
“He wears a size three Pamper,” mom LaQueen Hunter Grover tells WDSU News in the video below. “He’s supposed to be in a size one as a newborn. He wears three to six month old clothes and he wears some six to nine month clothes.”

Now one month old, Loyalty Adonis is over 15 pounds and rapidly growing, with his mom telling WDSU that he acts like the Incredible Hulk when he wants something. She was also quick to add there won’t be any more pregnancies in her future!

If you see a homeless, helpless animal in need in your neighborhood, would you rush to their rescue?

Many people would want to do something to help in such a situation, but the truth is that it can be too dangerous for an untrained animal lover. That’s why we’re so grateful for the amazing heroes of rescue organizations like Viktor Larkhill, who go above and beyond the call of duty to give stray badly injured stray dogs a second chance at life.

Many times, abandoned or stray animals on the street will be mixed breed dogs, like pit bulls or terriers. It’s not very common to find a homeless dog such as a golden retriever, who are well-known for being great house pets.

In the following clip from amazing animal rescuer Larkhill, we see heroes have their work cut out for them with poor Samson who was left blind in both eyes. According to Larkhill, the elderly and eyesight-impaired dog’s family abandoned him at a kill shelter.

“He was going to die unless someone rescued him. We couldn´t let it happen,” the rescuer wrote on YouTube.
“We rescued Samson, we took him to our hospital where he was operated from his eyes as well as a chronic infection on his ears. And then, after a long wait, we found a family for him so we took him to Germany…”

Check out Samson’s inspiring story and please SHARE it with your friends on Facebook today to help bring awareness about dog’s who need our help!

After giving birth to a premature baby, many parents spend weeks and sometimes even months waiting until the day they’re allowed to bring their baby home.

Danielle Bills is no different; only she’s beeing waiting three years to bring her baby boy home for the first time finally.

Bills, a mother-of-two who gave birth to her youngest son at just 27 weeks, suffered from preeclampsia while pregnant, and was forced to give birth to baby Clifford extremely prematurely.

Clifford survived the birth, but was born with severe lung disease because of it, and has had to stay in the hospital this entire time for treatment. “You may see children who spend from four to either months in the hospital for the same thing but Clifford’s lung disease was so severe which has caused his prolonged hospital stay,” said nurse practitioner Robin Kingston.

The prolonged hospital stay has been tough on both Clifford and his mom, who spent almost every day driving back and forth to the hospital. And while the road ahead will still be challenging, Clifford is finally strong enough to go home. “He gets multiple medications which he’ll need long term and because of the prolonged hospital stay he’s severely developmentally delayed,” said Kingston.

For now, Bills and her family are focusing on celebrating this huge milestone and were even thrown a going away party by the many nurses and doctors who helped Clifford during his hospital stay.

cover-1

It was a cold, snowy day somewhere in Eastern Europe, and a child wandered alone and confused near a busy road…

Thankfully, the child was wearing fluorescent neon snow gear, making it easy to spot her and because of the inclement weather conditions, traffic was moving slowly.

It is uncertain where the child’s parent or guardian was, but one driver’s dashboard camera captured the incident for later review.

One motorist is driving right past the lost child, and finally, another car spots her and slows down.

The passenger in the vehicle opens the window and lifts the child up by her coat (while the car is still in motion) and drags her to “safety.”

We guess this guy gets an A for effort, but an F for his delivery. While it wasn’t the safest way to save the child, it did get her off the way and away from oncoming vehicles

What’s odd is just as the child is being lifted up and dragged with the car, a woman runs over and it’s uncertain if it is the girl’s mother or just a nearby civilian.

Vet Pulls A Giant Parasite From Tiny Kitten’s Nose

Normally, when dogs and cats catch infections or parasites, their owners are able to quickly spot a problem and bring them to a veterinarian for treatment.

Stray animals, on the other hand, have no one to look out for them or give them care when sick, and typically minor issues can quickly become dangerous, which is exactly what happened when a parasite burrowed into a stray kitten’s nose and latched on.

Cuterebra larva like to find warm placed to grow, which is why they sometimes burrow into the skin of dogs and cats that are outdoors a lot. “The reason we see it in cats in particular especially kittens is that they’re small so they’re compromised, they don’t groom themselves as well so they’re not going to get rid of it, they might ingest it,” said Dr. Elizabeth Farrington, a veterinarian from the Nebraska Humane Society.

This past year, a stray kitten with a swollen head and difficulty breathing was recently brought to the Nebraska Humane Society. At first, the team had no idea what the cause could be, but when they inspected further, they realized a Cuterebra had latched on inside the kitten’s nose. The team removed the giant larva, which was the biggest any had ever seen, and thankfully the kitten had no infections and quickly started to recover.

Eventually, they turn into a common fly, but good pet owners are usually able to spot an issue and get it removed before it becomes an issue. “A good owner is going to start noticing the animal is pawing at themselves, or something is itchy or bothering them and they’ll take them into their veterinarian. So often times we’ll see these guys, these little Cuterebra when they’re much smaller than when they get to this size,” said Dr.  Farrington.

Watch the entire video below to see the shocking moment this vet discovers what’s lurking inside a poor kitten’s nose.

There are plenty of places you can safely surrender unwanted animals, which is why it’s even more heartbreaking when cruel people leave innocent, defenseless animals out on the street in the cold like trash.

Often, the animals can’t survive on their own in severe weather and tragically pass away before anyone can find them, but luckily newborn kittens abandoned in a box during a bitter snowstorm in Cleveland, Ohio were found and rescued just in time.

While walking, a woman heard a faint rustling noise coming from a box left on a street corner and thankfully peeked inside and found four tiny kittens inside. She immediately called the police and soon after rescuers from the Cleveland Animal Protective Services arrived.

“Because it was so frigid and we had no idea what their condition was, we wanted to make sure to get them in as quickly as possible,” said Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the Cleveland Animal Protective League. “We sent a staff member out who picked them up, and brought them in. Our veterinary team gave them an immediate exam.”

“It was a pretty brutally cold day of snow here,” Harvey said. “The way the temperatures dropped, if they were left out overnight, I seriously doubt they would survive.”

The kittens had huddled together and stayed warm long enough that rescuers couldn’t find any permanent or serious damage from their time in the cold. Rescuers named the six-week-old kittens Smalls, Squints, Repeat, and Benny, and they are now in foster care. Once old enough, they will be put up for adoption and placed into homes that will never abandon them.

It wasn’t until about 14 hours later that the Sheriff’s Office opened their dogs that they discovered the puppy, who had broken its left due to the incident.

The video showed the dog, described as a Cur mix, lying in the yard all night with her broken leg, all alone, with no food or water.

When she was discovered in the morning by shelter staff, Nala’s New Life Rescue stepped up to care for the pup, who they named Jenny.

Her leg was repaired at the expense of the foster home who is caring for Jenny, however, the animal advocate is in no financial position to pay for the surgery.

Nala’s New Life Rescue wrote on their Facebook page, “As you can see from the video, Jenny is a little angel, and also adorable. She was so quiet in the car traveling from the shelter to the vet – such a good little girl.”

They continued, “We are happy to announce that, thanks to your generosity and kindness, in just 12 hours, we were able to raise the funds necessary to cover the cost of Jenny’s surgery. Jenny is staying tonight at All Creatures Animal Hospital because we have not yet found her a foster home where she can recuperate.”

As far as Hernandez, he was arrested for heinous act and charged with animal cruelty

When a tree falls on a house, it can be incredibly disorienting for anyone inside. One second, everything is perfectly normal. The next, the ground is shaking, the roof is collapsing, and bits of debris and branches start raining down.

Yet in all that chaos, one heroic 9-year-old Canadian boy managed to save his sister second before being killed after a giant, 200-year-old oak tree split in half under the extreme weight of the snow and came crashing down on their Vancouver home.

Brady McMullen and his 7-year-old sister Lainey were playing games in the living room this past Wednesday morning since school had been canceled for a rare snow day. “It just happened in a flash,” the 9-year-old said. “We started to hear just rumbling like an earthquake,” said their father, Tom McMullen, who was upstairs at the time. “The roof was breaking,” Brady added. “I started to hear crashing and snow and branches falling on the roof little by little.”

Brady managed to grab Lainey just before a piece of sharp wood fell in the exact spot she was in and forced her over to the front door where their parents met them. “One of the tresses just popped out of the nails and just came down like a guillotine,” Tom said. “It was puncturing the ottoman where they were sitting, so it could have been – it could have been pretty bad.”

“It was traumatic. You wake up and they’re screaming, my wife was screaming, so I just started screaming and I just thought the worst,” Tom said. “[We] yanked the front door open and the neighbors were there, we tossed the kids to the neighbors and then we got out with what we could.” While the house was destroyed, the family is just thankful they all made it out alive.

“I’m just super proud that he, in those couple seconds, just grabbed her and ran,” Tom said about Brady. “I’ve just never seen a tree this big split in half.”

A brave and adventurous dog who wandered from home and got herself stuck on a cliff in Provo, Utah is safe after a very long night with some dedicated rescuers.

“We’ve got a dog harness. We’re going to rappel down, put that on [Mary and] bring [her] back down to safety,” Utah County Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team member Shaun Roundy says in the video below that they posted to YouTube.

Rescuers had to hike half a mile up steep and dangerous terrain in freezing cold temperatures to save the 3-year-old American Foxhound named Mary.

The poor pooch became stuck on a cliff above a 60-foot drop and was absolutely terrified.

“We thought, ‘This dog’s been [here] overnight on the coldest night of the year. It’s going to be hungry. It’s going to be happy to see us,'” he told ABC affiliate Good4Utah.com.

“Don’t go jumping off any cliffs, now. Come here, Mary,” Roundy can be heard saying in the video. “OK, Mary. Hang on, girl. Good girl. Got some treats for you.”

The scary ordeal ended up going on for hours before the dog was finally safely on the ground. “I thought, ‘If I take one more step closer, it’s going to fall off,'” Roundy said.

Yet even after Mary’s unbelievable journey away from home, the adventurous dog was reunited with her family and will be fine from the incident. “The owner did return the following morning and coaxed her down,” John Luke, a Utah County spokesman, said to ABC. “She had some scrapes and minor cuts but was otherwise OK.”

Talk about a dramatic rescue! If you’ve ever seen a cat fall out of a tree or off a roof before, you can probably assume that the cat is going to be just fine, after seeing how it has been portrayed on TV and in movies for so long.

However, the following video proves that this is actually pretty terrifying when you have to witness it in real life. In a clip posted Rumble, we see heroes gathered in a Panmure suburb of Auckland, New Zealand where first responders and animal rescuers have come together to help a scared, small baby kitten who became stuck in a giant palm tree.

“A kitten has shown rescue workers that it has at least nine lives to live after falling about 25 meters down a tree near Auckland, New Zealand, and then running away,” the rescuers wrote on Rumble, where the video has since been posted.

What makes this video so much like one of those old-timey cartoons, however, is what happens when the cutie fell out of the tree and scurried off like it was no big deal!

“The kitten had previously been rescued and this was the third call out the fire department had received. Once the cat came down there was a short foot chase before the cat was apprehended and taken into custody. Now safely housed at a Lonely Miaow foster home,” a rescuer told to Storyful.

This couldn’t be more truer for America’s military heroes, one quarter of which are living in our country right now with severe mental and physical disabilities that are often forgotten by so many people.
