Inmates Rescue Guard That Passed Out While On Duty

Prison inmates are rarely referred to as heroic, but one Georgia sheriff has hailed six prison inmates as heroes, for what they did for a correction officer when he collapsed on the job.

The six inmates had been taken to a local prison to weed and clean the grounds as part of a work detail trip, but it was so hot and humid outside that their guard collapsed and stopped breathing while they were working. The inmates knew they easily could have run away, but knew the guard needed their help.

The inmates worked together to turn the guard onto his back, removed his gun belt and bulletproof vest, start CPR, and called 911. When he started breathing, it was just real heavy and real fast,” inmate Greg Williams said., shortly after, paramedics arrived and helped revive him.

“We all know that Monday could have ended differently for our officer,” Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats said. “They really stepped up in a time of crisis and showed that they care about my officers. That really speaks a lot about my officers, too, [and] how they treat these inmates. They treat them like people. Like family.”

“It wasn’t about who is in jail and who wasn’t,” Williams said. It was about a man going down and we had to help him.”

After riding the busy streets of Mexico City for more than a decade, one cyclist knows how incredibly dangerous urban traffic can be, which is why she bravely put herself in danger when she witnessed a dog dart out into traffic.

Like most other days, the woman was riding her bike to her second job, but unlike other days, the ride turned into a dangerous chase when she saw a small dog dart out into traffic and bravely went after it. “I have many years of experience as an urban cyclist and that’s why I had the ability, but I admit it was dangerous,” said the brave woman known only by her Twitter handle, Calaveritabike.

The 32-year-old weaved between cars and trucks as she attempted to catch the small dog, and eventually managed to corral the terrified animal towards the sidewalk until a construction worker finally caught its leash. “It must be recognized that without the help of some cars, a motorcyclist and the people who tried to grab it, would not have been possible,” she explained.

The cyclist then held onto the dog until its owner caught up with them. “I did not ask for anything, I just gave the dog and I said it was okay,” she said. “I also have a dog and know how important he is to his family.”

One Tennessee family are so used to freight trains passing through their neighborhood at all hours of the day that they barely notice all the noise anymore.

But when mom Jada Borum noticed the train conductor was holding down the horn longer than normal, she knew someone or something must be on the tracks and started counting her kids to make sure everyone was accounted for. Before she could finish, she started hearing screams.

Jada sprinted over to the nearby tracks and found two of her daughters screaming and crying but standing safely to the side of the train. They quickly explained that the family dog, Buddy, had been walking with them and was hit from behind when he got frightened by the train and tried to outrun it.

“I just thought he was dead,” Jada said. But once the freight train finally passed by, they found Buddy lying on his side. He had several gashes on his face and had come injuries to his hip and tail, but he was miraculously alive. The family immediately rushed Buddy to the vet, who treated him for his injuries and told the family their yellow lab will make a full recovery. “I’m thankful he’s alive, he’s amazed me,” Jada said.

Disney Characters Greet Deaf Boy With Sign Language

Disneyland is often called the place where dreams come true, and a few Disney characters made sure that was the case for a little boy who lost almost all of his hearing.

Recently, a child abuse prevention agency called Olive Crest, which helps at-risk kids and families in California, Nevada, and Washington, organized a special trip to Disneyland for a deaf little boy and his family. They hoped the trip would “send the message that with a little love and ‘magic,’ that you can truly make a child’s dream come true and provide them a bright memory that can last a lifetime.”

To make sure the boy, whose name could not be released, had fun during his visit to Disneyland, the agency arranged to have an ASL translator with the family. But the boy couldn’t contain his excitement when he met Mickey and Minnie and realized he didn’t need a translator to talk to them.

During the sweet and unplanned meeting, Minnie and Mickey Mouse kneeled down and started signing “It’s nice to meet” and “I love you.” The boy was so excited that he actually gave them each a hug, which is something he never does. “The family had a Disney translator with them, who was behind the boy telling the characters what/how to sign. The encounter wasn’t planned, however,” said spokesperson Steven Macias.

“The child was ecstatic after meeting the characters because he didn’t know they would speak ‘his language,’” a spokesperson for Olive Crest said. “The child is typically not a hugger, so the fact that he hugged both Minnie and Mickey spoke volumes to the joy he felt.”

HGTV Stars Build Paralyzed Firefighter A New Home

For the past 17 years, one Texas firefighter has dedicated his life to saving lives and helping others. But when he was injured in a freak accident while on the job, his fellow firefighters and the rest of his community stepped up to return the favor.

This past May, firefighter Garth Goodwin was working on a billboard and was electrocuted when his tools touched an exposed wire. The shock threw him 12-13 feet off the platform and left him paralyzed from the chest down. When the rest of the fire department heard about the freak accident, they immediately got to work figuring out how they could help the situation.

The firemen knew Goodwin’s home wasn’t wheelchair accessible, so they decided they would build him one that was. “Out of nowhere, they called me and said ‘hey, we’re gonna build you a house,’” said Garth. The firemen reached out to a local contractor, Wes Waller of UBI Products, and asked if he’d be willing to help. “The firemen called me and they said, ‘Hey, we’re firemen and we don’t know how to build a house…Can you help us?'” Waller explained. “I said ‘absolutely.'” Waller took to Facebook and asked people to donate time, money, and materials. “Within a week, 80 percent of the house was donated,” Waller said.

The only major thing left that was needed to start building the home was $20,000 worth of lumber, which local HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines generously decided to donate. “I [decided] I’m just going to ask [the Gaineses] for it and 30 minutes later, they said yes,” Waller said.

“I know Chip and Joanna, they’re huge, and they did connect the last dot, but none of these dots would be connected without the great people from Central Texas,” Waller said. “If anything, this would not be happening if the firefighters wouldn’t have called and asked, ‘What can we do to build a house?'”

Goodwin recently returned home after devoting all his time to physical therapy, and can’t express how thankful he, his wife, and their 19-year-old son who was born missing a part of his brain, are for everyone who has contributed to building their new home, which is scheduled to be complete by Thanksgiving.

“To have all of this…it is true…what you give to the community and what you do for others, in turn, when something like this happens, they’re gonna do for you, and we’re seeing that, it’s just been so positive, so uplifting. It’s kept us going, it’s kept his attitude as positive as can be,” said wife Lisa. “There’s still a lot of good in this world, and especially in this community, and we’re just getting it, we’re getting the tip of it, and it’s awesome, I mean you can’t explain that,” Goodwin said.“God’s got his hands all over us.”

Hero Mail Carrier Helps Extinguish House Fire

Mail carriers aren’t normally described as brave or courageous, but one California mailman is being hailed as a hero by his community for what he did when he saw lives were in danger while on his mail route.

Recently mail carrier Robert Sweeney was walking his usual mail route in Natomas, California when he spotted smoke pouring out of one of the homes he delivered mail to every day, and then realized the house was on fire with two people and their pets trapped inside.

Everyone in the area just stood back and waited for firefighters to arrive at the scene and save the day, but Sweeney didn’t hesitate to go above and beyond the call of duty since he knew lives were at stake. Even though it meant putting himself in danger, Sweeney grabbed a nearby garden hose, stood in the middle of thick smoke, and started spraying the fire and helping the people and some of their pets get out of the home.

Eventually, firefighters arrived at the scene, extinguished the fire, and saved four more cats and two birds that were still trapped inside. And while everyone is calling Sweeney a hero for his courageous actions, he was just glad the two people trapped in the fire were able to make it out safely.

Good Samaritan Gives Homeless Man Shoes

While leaving work earlier this month, one Arizona man was stopped in his tracks when he spotted a homeless man crawling on his hands and knees on the side of the road.

“I stopped my car,” said David Lee Witherspoon Jr., who works as a full-time employee at the Phoenix Veteran Affairs and is the president of the St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry in downtown Phoenix. “I didn’t even pull over. I just saw him right away, so I got out and I asked him, ‘Sir, what’s wrong?'”

The man explained that he became homeless after he got into a fight with someone at his last home and ran out with nothing but the clothes on his back and a pair of socks on his feet. However, as the temperatures rose, the ground became too hot to walk on without shoes, and he was forced to crawl to keep his feet from burning.

Witherspoon began washing the man’s feet with some water, and then grabbed an extra pair of shoes, which he keeps in his car to change into as he goes from work to volunteering at the food pantry, and put them on for him. “A lot of people give up on people now and that’s the biggest problem,” Witherspoon said. “I mean, you don’t have to… empty your wallet or anything like that; just a simple, kind act.”

Dog Wakes Owner From Medically Induced Coma

When one UK man saved a rescue dog’s life by adopting him and making him part of the family, he never imagined that the dog would return the favor tenfold.

In 2012, Andy Szasz and his wife Estelle adopted a schnauzer-poodle mix named Teddy from a shelter. “Ted is such a remarkable little dog in many ways. He’s clever, loving, loyal, funny and a right little character,” Szasz said about Teddy, who helped give him the strength to beat bowel cancer.

So when Andy was placed in a medically induced coma earlier this year after developing a bad case of pneumonia and stopped breathing, Estelle thought it might help to bring Teddy to the hospital. After getting permission from Andy’s doctors, Estelle brought Teddy in for a visit. Once Teddy was by his best friend’s side and started barking, Andy miraculously started to wake up.

“I always tell people I rescued Ted and Ted rescued me. “We certainly do have a special bond,” Szasz said about his incredible companion, who was recently honored with a special award by the UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

5-Year-Old Bonds With Neighbor After Dad Is Deployed

While yard work might seem like a chore to most people, it’s one Illinois five-year-old’s favorite activities since it means getting to spend time with his dad.

“He loves John Deere,” mom Barbara Kelly said about her son, Brian Kelly. “He gave his dad a John Deere shirt before he deployed because he loves lawn care. He told me, ‘Let Brian know I’m wearing my John Deere shirt,’ and I told him, and he just smiled. The picture of them on the lawn mower wearing the shirt was the last picture I took of Brian and my husband before he deployed.”

But after dad Dan Kelly was deployed, Brian had no one to do small projects with so he started visiting his neighbor, Dean Cravens, when he saw him outside working on the yard. “We moved here the end of July last year,” Barbara said. “Their friendship started developing then, but it became very much more so since my husband left. He misses him so much.”

“They bought the house, and they’re flipping it and fixing it up, so they’re always doing yard work, and he loves to do yard work,” Cravens said. “When he sees me with my trimmers, he’d always come over and talk to me about it. He’s a hard worker. When his dad left, he’d have more time on his hands, and he’d come over and ring the doorbell. He’d ask if I could come out and play. Originally he’d ask to do more yard work, and I thought, ‘Well, let’s do other things too,’ so we play catch, we’ll be shooting the ball, working on my golf swing.”

“I appreciate it a lot. I love kids and being with them. When I see they’re not having fun, I’m not,” he said. “I like to coach and teach them because you get to see them learn. I don’t have a son. I have three daughters, and we’ve had a great time, but it’s fun to be around a boy. It’s different.”

“Brian knows that no one is going to replace his father. The bond between a father and son, it’s just unbreakable,” said Barbara, who knows her husband will be grateful that Cravens kept their little boy company while he was away. “If that was me, I would be happy that my child is smiling and has someone to look up to and be there for them until I get back. When Dan gets back, Brian’s going to cry and run to him with open arms.”

Firefighters Save Puppy From Fire And Abusive Owner

Being trapped inside a burning home isn’t something anyone hopes for, but for one California puppy, the near-death experience was actually a blessing in disguise.

Earlier this month, firefighters from the Lompoc Fire Department responded to a call about a house that had caught fire. When they arrived at the scene, they found the resident, Edward Vantassel, had made it out of the home on his own. However, his puppy was still trapped inside so they suited up and rushed in.

Crews finally found the puppy on the home’s second floor, but when they laid eyes on him, they quickly realized the fire wasn’t the only thing putting the helpless animal in danger. “Firefighters located the dog inside of an overturned, weighted down box in a room on the second floor of the residence,” the Lompoc Police Department said. “Firefighters also discovered the dog’s muzzle and rear legs had been bound with rubber bands.”

Once they safely made it outside with the puppy, named Pooh, they cut him free, got him water, and then sent him to the vet for treatment. For now, Pooh is recuperating with his foster home while he waits to find his forever home. Vantassel, on the other hand, has been taken into custody and charged with a felony count of cruelty to an animal.

2-Year-Old Survives Fall From Sixth-Floor Window

Falling out of a window from the sixth floor is almost always fatal, which is why first responders were so stunned when they arrived at the scene and discovered the two-year-old victim barely had a scratch on her.

This past Friday, Audrianna Dzyuba had been sitting on the windowsill in her bedroom playing with her tablet like she normally does. However, earlier that day, Audrianna’s 17-year-old cousin, Isabelle, opened the window and the toddler accidentally fell out while she stepped out of the room to grab a slice of pizza.

“I heard the thump and I heard her cousin start screaming hysterically, ‘she went out the window,”’ Alexander Dzyuba,  Audrianna’s father, said. “My first thought was ‘I just lost my child.’ When I saw her down on the awning and then she sat up, I was hoping she was okay. I ran downstairs to see how I could get her down.”

Miraculously, Audrianna landed on an awning and she walked away with just a bruise on her arm. “She wasn’t sure what was going on. She was startled more than anything,” Dzyuba said. “In the spot that she landed, two inches in either direction she would have hit the metal bars on the awning and she probably would not have survived.”

“It was a miracle,” said mom Kelley. “I have finally calmed down enough now that I clearly comprehend everything. Right now I am counting my lucky stars that she is alive,” Dzyuba said.

While driving around one afternoon, a Michigan woman heard an unusual noise coming from her car and realized a tiny stowaway had gotten trapped somewhere in her car.

“Stopped at a stop light and somebody said, ‘You have a cat somewhere in your car,'” said Jean Puegh. “They could hear it. It was right up in there. It had gotten way in there. And it was on top of the gas tank.” Jean immediately called 911 since she didn’t know where the tiny animal was and didn’t want it to get hurt.

Stranger Raises Money For Homeless Man’s Injured Dog

While walking down the street one evening, an Australian woman noticed a homeless man’s dog was limping and couldn’t help but ask what was wrong with her.

The homeless man, Pat Quinn, who performs music on the street to make some money, explained that his beloved dog, Rosie, injured her leg. Pat hated that Rosie was in pain but found out that the surgery to fix the torn ligament would cost $3,000 and he had no way to pay for it.

“When I saw Rosie last week. I just couldn’t handle the thought of her having to go without her surgery,” said Laurel Lainio. To try and raise money for the surgery, Laurel started a GoFundMe page. “Just like me she has torn her anterior cruciate ligament & is in pain but Pat can’t afford to have it operated on.”

“He tried to get a loan & even went without food to have her looked at. But now, I’d love for you to help this man & his constant companion. Please give so that Rosie can walk comfortably again!” Laurel wrote on the GoFundMe page, which has raised over $1,000. After a veterinarian heard about Laurel’s mission and offered to do the surgery at a lower cost, Laurel searched the streets to find Pat and Rosie and shared the good news. “I’m just blown away,” Pat said. “I can’t believe it.”

Earlier this week, Rosie finally got the surgery she desperately needed. “Rosy’s surgery went well today! It turns out the injury was worse than they first thought so I’m so glad she was able to be seen to so quickly,” Laurel wrote in an update. “The amazing Veronica Wah Day from Pets & Their People at Fulham Gardens did an amazing job! Hopefully recovery won’t take too long & she’ll be chasing possums up trees in no time!”

5-Year-Old Saves Pregnant Mom’s Life After She Collapsed

Over a year ago, one Ohio family taught their then four-year-old son a short song to help him remember what to do in case of an emergency, but they never expected it would actually help him save their life one day.

Last month, mom Kristi Bailey collapsed after suffering from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. “I knew something was off. I started feeling really light-headed and I started sweating. Next thing you know I’m on the floor,” Kristi said. “She was very sick and she had to go to the hospital,” said five-year-old Jackson.

Thankfully, Jackson still remembered the short jingle that his parents had taught him a year before about what to do if there was an emergency. “You call nana, daddy, 911, if mommy’s on the floor,” Jackson said. “[Jackson] had the presence of mind to remember something that we went over a year ago … ’Call Daddy, call Nana, call 911.’ He’s very helpful, very alert, but for him to look up [from his tablet] … that is miraculous in itself,” Kristi said about her son, who was diagnosed with ADHD the next day.

Jackson immediately grabbed the phone and called his grandma and dad, Todd Kleinpaste, who then called 911. By the time first responders arrived, Kristi was bleeding internally and had lost almost two liters of blood. Kristi lost the baby, but they managed to get her to the hospital in time to save her life. “I lost a baby, and not just that I almost died. It’s been hard,” she said.

Because of Jackson’s bravery, his mother is still alive today, and the Worthington Fire Department recently presented the brave little boy with a “Hero of the Day Award” for his quick-thinking. “What the firefighters did in putting a positive spin, honoring him like that, and making him know he was my hero, was amazing,” Kristi said.

Man Reunited With Blind And Deaf Lost Cat

When a beloved pet goes missing, it can feel just as devastating as if you’ve lost a family member, which is why one man searched for weeks when his 20-year-old blind and deaf cat disappeared.

This past February, Raymond McNamara spent more than three weeks posting fliers and looking everywhere for his disabled cat, Lily, who got lost while they were on a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Because she’s blind, she always sticks close,” Raymond said. “But in early February, when we were at a sand dune, I walked 10 feet away and turned my back for a brief moment. And when I turned around, she was gone.”

Photo by Saving Sage Animal Rescue Foundation/Pet Express Animal Hospital

“I was so upset, I just stopped eating and I lost a bunch of weight,” Raymond said. “And it got to the point where I was exhausted and running out of money. Finally, I figured, ‘She’s gone — sad as it is, I need to accept it and move on.’” Raymond headed to California to look for work, but drove all the way back to Florida on mid-May when his mother called and explained that someone had found a blind and deaf cat that fit Lily’s description at a construction site near the beach where she went missing.

Photo by Saving Sage Animal Rescue Foundation/Pet Express Animal Hospital

“I climbed in my car as soon as I could and started driving back to Florida, with tears of joy all the way,” Raymond said. “It’s so incredible that Lily was able to survive for two months on her own in the heat and torrential rain we’d been having,” said Kathy Bieniek, vice-president of Saving Sage Animal Rescue. “She was in bad shape with liver and kidney issues and we had to put her on IV fluids. But with a lot of loving care, she made it.”

Photo by Saving Sage Animal Rescue Foundation/Pet Express Animal Hospital

And when Raymond saw Lily for the first time in months, he was so happy he burst into tears. “What a glorious occasion. Really, it’s a miracle…She is my world. There was no greater moment for me than being able to hold her again,” he said. “He and that cat have such a strong bond — he’s never going to let her out of his sight again,” Bieniek added. “It was a very happy day.”

Baby Kangaroo Rescued From Dying Mom’s Pouch

When one Australian animal rescue worker received a call about a kangaroo that had been hit and was lying on the side of the road, she rushed to the scene to try and save the injured animal.

Unfortunately, by the time the kangaroo was discovered and rescuer Melanie Fraser arrived, there was no hope of saving the suffering animal, which died shortly after from her injuries. Before leaving, Fraser, a rescue worker with Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Wildlife Victoria, decided to quickly check the kangaroo’s pouch.

Photo by Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network

As Fraser looked inside the animal’s pouch, a tiny pink arm poked out. Miraculously, the months-old joey hadn’t been injured in the car accident so Fraser scooped the baby, who she named Dawson, out and brought him to wildlife rehabilitation worker Christine Gilmore.

Photo by Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network

“Had he been left much longer, ants or the elements would have eventually killed him,” Fraser said. Since Dawson was rescued, Gilmore has been working around the clock to feed and nurture him. “I am now his mum,” Gilmore said. However, there are some things even Gilmore can’t do for Dawson, like provide companionship, which is why she paired him with another orphaned baby kangaroo named Nelson. “Nelson is a little bigger than him, and they will grow together and be released together,” Gilmore said.

Photo by Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network

“He is doing great, and this morning, one of his eyes opened,” Gilmore said. Dawson will need to spend about two years with his human carer, but will then be released back into the wild when he’s ready. “He will eventually be introduced into his own little mob of orphans, including the one he is currently buddied up with,” Fraser said. “Slowly, he will have less and less interaction with his carer until he is deemed to be a wild kangaroo who is capable of surviving without human intervention.”

Man Rescues Stranger And Her Dogs From Fire

Firefighters go through tons of training and use heavy-duty protective gear to limit their chance of getting injured or killed when they run into burning buildings.

So when Florida first responders and firemen arrived at the scene of a deadly house fire in Brevard County, they were stunned when they realized what a total stranger did to save a woman and her dogs trapped inside the burning home with no way to get out.

Shortly after the fire started at the house, Josh Leissa was driving by and stopped when he spotted billowing smoke. “Driving by and I seen some clouds and it was too big to be a bonfire,” Josh said. Because of the amount of smoke and flames, Josh knew there wasn’t enough time to wait for firefighters to arrive. Instead, he decided to run into the burning home without any protective gear.

“I went into the front door and that part was blocked so I couldn’t go in there. So I had to go to the back and she was in the back room.” Josh said. ” (It was) a lot of smoke. Could barely see anything.” Once inside, Josh found a woman lying on the ground with two dogs. “I grabbed her and her dogs and got her out of there,” he said.

Shortly after, first responders arrived and gave the woman oxygen before taking her to the hospital. Unfortunately, by the time the crews put out the fire, the woman’s other two dogs had already passed away. Without Josh’s bravery, no one would have survived the fire. “I feel good, I feel good I’m happy that she’s OK.”

When one animal-loving Georgia cop heard that someone had found an abandoned 10-week-old puppy on the side of the road, he rushed to the scene as soon as possible.

“She was in a cardboard box and it was closed in. A passerby saw the box and stopped, and saw there was a puppy in it. So he opened up the box and laid it on the side and got some water for it, then called 911,” said Deputy Earl Hanners, who had been helping out at a car accident when the call first came through on his radio.

Once he finished with the car accident, he rushed over to the location where the puppy had been reported and instantly fell in love when he saw the tiny puppy for the first time. “I told the guy … to cancel animal control,” Hanners said. “I’m going to take the puppy and get her to a vet and check her out.”

Since it was almost 90 degrees Farenheit when the puppy was discovered, she was overheating and dehydrated so Hanners got her out of the sun and gave her plenty of water. “We got her on the back porch, and I called my vet’s office and told them what I had,” Hanners said about the puppy he named Bridget. “I gave her water and food, and just let her kick back and relax and regroup from all the heat. She ate about three or four bowls of food and water.”

Hanners planned to foster Bridget until he could find her a home sine he already had eight dogs of his own, but was already too in love with her to let her go. Instead, he brought her to the vet to be vaccinated and checked for diseases and then brought her home. “We just introduced her to the other dogs in the house last night. It just takes a day or two of watching, and they blend right into the pack,” Hanners said. “She just loves to cuddle. She loves my grandchildren. She’s just a very, very sweet loving dog.”

After dementia patient, Georges Karam suffered numerous, unexplainable injuries at the Garry J. Armstrong long-term care center in Ottawa, Canada, relatives installed a video camera in his room. Nassrallah said that when he and his family asked the facility about Karam’s injuries including bruises and cuts, they never really gave them an answer.

So, with the center’s permission, a baseball-sized camera was installed on the wall facing the man’s bed back in February and the staff was informed about the device. Just a few weeks later, Nassrallah and his wife were watching the footage from his grandfather’s room when they saw a caregiver enter and act extremely aggressive.
