A New York State man said a missing ingredient for his family spaghetti sauce recipe led to him purchasing a lottery ticket that won him $5 million.

John Lewis, 56, told New York Lottery officials he stopped in the convenience store before his shift as a bartender because he needed mushrooms to make spaghetti sauce. I ran to the store before work to get mushrooms for my spaghetti sauce,” Lewis said. “It’s a two-day sauce my dad used to make.”

Lewis then used $10 of his change from the mushroom purchase to buy a Set For Life scratch-off ticket from a vending machine at the store. “I never put money in those things,” he said. “What possessed me to be in that store at that time with just the right amount of money in my hand for that machine I will never know. I have been asking myself that question over and over for days. In the end though, I’m just glad it was me.”

Lewis’ ticket turned out to be $5 million prize top winner and he chose the option to receive his prize money in $172,068 annual installments. With the money, Lewis says he plans to help a family member with medical bills, but he has no immediate plans for the rest of it.

“I was planning on working at something till the day I died. This may open a few more doors, but we’re happy with the life we have. It’s a good life,” he said.

Police in Canada claim that a bear that followed a two-year-old into a British Columbia home and left when it was punched in the face.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Elery Froude was at her home with her two sons, Camden and Ivany, when she heard her 2-year-old son Ivany scream her name. “Elery turned in time to see the bear coming through her sliding glass door,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

She locked herself and her two sons into a bedroom while the bear rummaged through the house and even drooled on her dining room table. A family friend wound up chasing the bear around the house and banging on pots and pans in an attempt to scare the grizzly bear.

“The family friend slammed the door on the bear before finally punching it in the nose which made him retreat outside,” the RCMP said. When police arrived, the bear was pawing at the door and chewing on the screen and officers used air horns and threw water bottles at it to scare it back into the bushes.

The RCMP said the bear left but returned to the home later and tried to get into the garage before chasing a man down the street. The man was luckily able to get into his truck before he was caught.

After consulting with wildlife officials, police were recommended to put the bear down. “The bear was euthanized and experts were unable to find any signs of illness or other conditions that would have caused its unusually bold behavior,” wrote upi.com.

Last year the Robles family was left heartbroken when their beloved dog Lola ran away from home.

The Labrador retriever left the Texas family stunned when she took off last summer and Jesyln Robles, a teenager, said of her dog, “I was really sad. Most of me thought she got hit or had died somehow.”

The family was devastated, until, out of nowhere, a call came in from Dallas Animal Services saying Lola was found. The Robles family was speechless by this amazing news. They went to reunite with Lola who was beyond happy to see them again. When the family picked up the dog, they noticed she was in good health because whoever had found her looked after her and fed her well.

Jesyln and her younger brother Joshua were in tears when they saw their pup. “I couldn’t believe that she was back,” Joshua said. “I was just really surprised and I couldn’t believe it was her,” Jesyln added.

It is unknown exactly where Lola had been that past year when she was missing but they suspect that she was living with someone who took great care of her since she actually gained a couple of pounds. Now after finding Lola, the Robles family is being extra careful so that they never lose their furry best friend ever again.

Thankfully, the Robles’ had Lola microchipped, which is the reason that this reunion was possible in the first place.

Deaf Pit Bull Cries At Shelter After Best Friend Gets Adopted

One of the best ways for shelter dogs to ease their sense of loneliness is to bond with other animals.

This was the case for Marshmallow, a deaf white pit bull who was rescued by Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption Shelter after she was found alone. Rescuers put Marshmallow with another shelter dog named Scooby, and once the pair got together, they became great pals.

Credit: Facebook- Unleashed Pet Rescue And Adoption

The duo spent all their time together until Scooby got adopted, and things went downhill for Marshmallow. Once Scooby was gone, Marshmallow became very depressed and started crying on a regular basis. The loss of her best friend and roommate was extremely hard for Marshmallow and it made her sad and confused.

Credit: Facebook- Unleashed Pet Rescue And Adoption

Marshmallow had no idea what to do without the presence of Scooby, so the shelter stepped up their efforts to find her a forever home. Unfortunately, Marshmallow has already been adopted twice and has been brought back to the shelter on both occasions. Sadly, she has gotten very used to the concept of heartbreak.

Recently, Marshmallow had a meet and greet with a few potential families, and she finally found a new home that exceeded her wildest dreams. There, Marshmallow gets lots of love, food, affection and belly rubs, and she’s treated the way she’s always deserved to be.

Marshmallow’s story is one that we hope will inspire others to take a chance on a dog who could really use a forever home. We hope Marshmallow has the best life.

Mechanic Rescues Kitten Trapped Inside Car Engine

While driving to work one morning, one driver in China couldn’t figure out why a stray cat that she had seen outside her house was chasing her for miles.

It all made sense, however, when she got into her car after work and heard what sounded like faint meows coming from somewhere inside her car. Some coworkers and passersby stopped to help try but all failed to figure out where the kitten must have gotten trapped.

After a while, mechanic Zheng Lu came to help and refused to stop looking even when the kitten stopped making any noise. “The mother cat had been waiting for the kitten, refusing to go, which indicated that it was still alive, so we would not give up,” Lu said.

The good Samaritans continued to work past sunset thanks to flashlights, and eventually, Lu managed to find the weeks-old kitten after he jacked the car up and started taking apart the engine. “I was just eager to get it out as soon as possible,” said Shu Tian, a deputy head of Sunshine SOS, a non-profit organization that was called to the scene to help.

Neighbors Form Human Chain To Help Get Pregnant Woman To Hospital During Hurricane Harvey

Amidst the tragedy sweeping Texas, there are good samaritans who went above and beyond to help a woman in labor.

Greg Smith explains to PEOPLE that he and his pregnant wife Andrea Smith, both doctors, arrived in Houston in July to do advanced medical training in their respective specialties. “We’re very new to Houston — and new to hurricanes,” Greg told PEOPLE.

Credit: PEOPLE.com via Gregory Smith

As Greg watched the floodwaters rise outside their apartment, he knew he had to get Andrea to the hospital fast. He called 911 but he kept getting kicked off the line and he couldn’t get through. Then, when the line finally connected, no one answered the call. “I put it on speaker phone to wait for someone to answer,” but no one did.

Greg’s mother, Sue Chor was at the home to help the new parents, so she called the Coast Guard, but was unable to get through. Chor finally reached the National Guard, only to learn that the troops could not arrive quick enough. The couple was trapped and Greg knew he would need to deliver this baby himself.

Credit: PEOPLE.com via Gregory Smith

He was worried as he was not trained in obstetrics, but said, “I had some courage, though. Even if I had to do a home birth, I felt like it was going to be okay.” The couple began to prepare for an at home birth and being that their apartment complex was filled with many medical professionals, there were many hands on deck to help.

Doctors, nurses, and EMTs arrived at the door with supplies and boiled water over the stove to clean the instruments. Meanwhile, someone had contacted someone whose father lived across the street from a fire station and sometime later, neighbors spotted what appeared to be a large fire truck outside.

Greg went outside and tried to flag down the truck and they said, “’We’re here for you.’” “The next thing I know, there’s a ride for Annie and Greg,” Chor told PEOPLE. “They grabbed their coats and umbrellas and the baby’s bags. Then off they went.”

Chor stood holding the family dog and a human chain helped Andrea walk through waist-high water to the truck. “We were soaked,” Greg says. “We sat on top of all these fire hoses, while firemen drove us to the hospital. They were careful to go slow and keep us safe.”

Andrea and Greg safely made it to the hospital and on Monday at 1:59 am, they delivered baby Adrielle.

“If she were born at home, that wouldn’t have been the best place for her,” Greg said. “I’m so glad she is in the hospital. Everything about this pregnancy we said is God’s will. That’s why her name is Adrielle. It means she belongs to God.”

That fateful day, Kevin received a call from Blake. “I was basically staring down the barrel of my own mortality,” Kevin said, but then he answered the phone. “It was her. We hadn’t talked in a year and the one person I believed I would have opened up to called at that exact moment I had let everything go and was at peak vulnerability.”

Kevin admitted to Blake that he was about to take his own life and luckily that day he decided not to kill himself. They agreed to speak the following day and ever since then the couple agreed to visit one another despite living in different cities.

In 2015, Kevin proposed to Blake on a trip to Switzerland and five months later they were married. “I love you,” Kevin told Blake. “Also, thanks for saving my life.” Blake added: “I think it’s a true example of a force in the universe intervening and connecting us. Man Risks His Life To Comfort Suicidal Stranger

While walking down into the subway in New York City, one woman stopped in her tracks when she looked up and saw an incredibly unusual sight.

As Michal Klein was walking in the Broadway/Lafayette subway station, she was stunned when she looked up and saw a young man and woman sitting on top of a metal beam about 20 feet above the platform. “I couldn’t really tell if they were laughing or if one person was crying. I thought it was friends. I wasn’t sure,” said Klein.

“My first thought was: How did they get up there? I thought they were just goofing off,” Klein said. A group of strangers had gathered and explained to Klein that they feared the woman was trying to harm herself. “She told me the girl had climbed over the railing, and went across the beam, and she said suicidal things.”

However, before the woman could go through with her plan, a brave man climbed up to the rail and risked his life to talk her out of it. “I don’t know what I would’ve done. I don’t think I would’ve climbed over to do that,” Klein said. “He actually cared enough, whoever he was, to help her. A lot of people seemed to be like, ‘Oh, it’s New York,’ and kept walking.”

Shortly after Klein captured the unbelievable moment, police arrived and brought the woman to the hospital for help.

With Hurricane Harvey sweeping the state of Texas, social media has been flooded with cries for help by devastated residents.

Photos of catastrophes all over the state has broken our hearts, but have also encouraged us to reach out and help the victims in any way we could. One particular photo of a group of elderly women flooded up to their waists in water in La vita Bella nursing home was posted to Twitter a couple of days ago.

The message read: “La Vita Bella nursing home in Dickinson, Texas, is almost underwater.”

Timothy McIntosh, the son-in-law of the nursing home’s owner said, “We knew it was a ‘life-or-death’ situation. You’re talking about people in wheelchairs, that are on oxygen, and the water is up to their chests.” Luckily, all of the residents were saved by helicopter.

Another photo surfaced of a little boy trapped on a roof, hiding for cover under a blanket, and came with the very heartbreaking message: “Anybody please my friend is losing faith. She feels like they are running out of time. Please, she has five kids.” Sunday morning, the victim posted on YouTube: “Could somebody please find me some help? Please!”

More videos and Instagram posts keep surfacing of families and pets in need and we hope anyone with any means to help could.

We’re praying for the residents of Texas.

Amongst all the tragedy surrounding Hurricane Harvey, good samaritans are also stepping up to do the right thing.

KTRK’s News reporter, Chauncy Glover was covering the storm Monday afternoon when he dropped everything he was doing to help a woman who had gone into labor“Someone was running up, screaming and yelling, ‘Hey, my sister’s in labor, my sister’s in labor,’” he reported live. “I left my mic behind. At this time, it’s not about news stories, and you see that she needs help.”

Credit: KTRK News

Chauncy explained that he and the KTRK team were originally trying to help an 89-year-old man who had just undergone open heart surgery into an ambulance when he heard the woman screaming. “I got her out of the house. I was able to get her feeling comfortable, making sure she’s breathing,” Glover said. “There was no way the ambulance was getting to her house to get her out of there. There’s deep water.”

Glover credits his quick thinking to his mother who showed him how to care for pregnant women. “My mom taught me to try to get her in a good comfortable position and out of the house,” Glover said.

Once the woman in labor was more stable, the news team were able to get her into a public works van where she was then transported to Texas Women’s Hospital

A Virginia man is the winner of a lottery drawing with a $5,000 top prize by purchasing 32 tickets with the same number combination.

Wayne Roles told Virginia Lottery officials he spent $32 to purchase Pick 4 drawing tickets with the same four-digit combination for one simple reason: “When I win I want to win big.” The small business owner bought his tickets at Fas Market, Fredericksburg stores, and Courthouse Gulf on August 11 and selected the combination of 1-5-2-2.

When Roles got his numbers he woke up in the middle of the night for a glass of water and wasn’t able to go back to sleep after discovering he had won 32 $5,000 top prizes for a total of $160,000. Roles says he plans to use his winnings to support his business.

This wasn’t the first time someone purchased identical lottery tickets and wound up winning big. Back in 2013, Harry Black won the $31 million double lottery jackpot by purchasing two identical tickets. Each of the four winning tickets were worth close to $15.8 million each and Black had two of them.

Clever Dog Leaves With A Bag Of Food During Hurricane Harvey

A resourceful dog carrying a bag of food down the street during Hurricane Harvey is capturing hearts on the internet.

Tiele Dockens posted the photo to Facebook on Saturday, which showed the wet dog walking down a road in Sinto, while holding a bag of dog food in its mouth.

“This dog is walking around Sinton TX carrying an entire bag of dog food with him. LOL #refugee,” Dockens wrote.

The dog immediately caught her attention, meanwhile, the dog’s owner, Salvador Segovia was searching everywhere for his grandson’s dog, Otis. He says the storm must have scared Otis and he probably ran away. “I stuck my head out yelling and yelling, and no Otis,” Segovia told review journal.com. “The following morning, I got out and kept yelling, circled the block and everything, and nothing. We didn’t know where Otis was.”

Dockens followed the dog to make sure he wasn’t lost and she ended up outside Segovia’s house. “This lady comes by and tells me, ‘Is that your dog coming down the road?’ ” Segovia said. “And I turn around, there comes Otis, and he’s carrying food!” The brown German shepherd mix walked up to the front porch, set down the bag of food and laid on the floor, Segovia told the news site.

Dockens, who lives a few miles away from the Segovia’s said it looked like the dog was on a mission. “I just thought it was so cute,” she said.

Everyone in Texas is dealing with the wrath of Hurricane Harvey, and that includes the animals who call Texas home.

Missouri City resident, Ariene Gonzalez Kelsch, shared a video on her Facebook of alligators literally swimming in her backyard. The video shows the flood waters rising way above a section of her fence, while enabled the alligators to swim into her backyard.

“Holy crap was my reaction. I felt relatively safe seeing them; it’s kind of cool. As long as I don’t open my door, I’m fine, but it’s still a little creepy,” Kelsch told the Houston Chronicle

She continued saying that the alligators weren’t the only wild animals wandering onto her property during the flood. “We have seen some snakes. That’s really what I am keeping an eye out for inside my house! Residents here in Lake Olympia will have sightings in the spring of baby alligators, but never inside our backyards,” Kelsch said.

On Saturday, Houston’s Gator Squad responded to the Meyerland area to help retrieve a small alligator from a residence flooded by Hurricane Harvey

Additionally, more stories are continuing to come out of alligators making their way into family’s backyards and even homes. Just yesterday, a Houston man went fishing with his bare hands in his own home due to a fish making his way into the living room.

4-Year-Old Boy Kicked Out Of School Because Of His Long Hair

A Texas mom is furious after her 4-year-old son was sent home from his first day of school at Barbers Hill Kindergarten Center because he has long hair.

According to Jessica Oates from Mont Belvieu, Texas, her son Jabez was sent home because he violated the dress code and his hair was “too long.” The school policy states that boys must have a haircut above the eyes, ears, and neck and that a parent or guardian must provide a letter citing “religious or cultural exception,” according to WDSU News.

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

The policy says that boys aren’t allowed to have ponytails or inappropriate accessories, so to solve this, Oates brought Jabez back to school with his locks fastened into a simple black hair tie in a bun. This, however, wasn’t enough and the principal said that Jabez must cut his hair or else he wouldn’t be allowed back at school.

Oates told CW39, “I bought him all his school supplies, his school clothes, his backpack, and he was enthralled. Now he’s confused as to why he can’t go to school anymore.”

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

Oates tried explaining to the school that her family is American-Indian, and she even showed them documentation that says they are Cocopah Indian and her son’s long hair is a signal of strength. “Apparently, the school board is a stickler for rules and can’t think of any religions or cultures that would require long hair,” Oates said.

Oates says of the ordeal, “It has been vile. A lot of people have told me to move and get out of here… I can’t home school because I work full time and I’m trying to find a second job. I’m a single mom and so home-schooling really just isn’t an option. All I have is the public school system and right now, that is absolutely failing my child.”

She started a Change.org petition in an attempt to change the school dress code, meanwhile, Superintendent Greg Poole says Oates has the right to take her child elsewhere.

“Parents have a right to seek an appropriate educational setting for their child, just as Ms. Oates has the right to place her child in a district that reflects her personal expectations for standards of appearance,” Poole’s statement read.

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

“There are procedures in place for addressing concerns over policy if it is Ms. Oates’ desire to have her son educated in Barbers Hill ISD. But we would and should justifiably be criticized if our district lessened its expectations or long-standing policies simply to appease,” he continued.

Oates says she wants to fight back and said she won’t be cutting her son’s hair anytime soon. “My son likes his hair,” she told InsideEdition.com. “He doesn’t understand why he is not allowed in school over something so trivial.”

Do you think Barbers Hill Kindergarten Center is wrong in this matter?

Finding the perfect wedding dress is something many brides dream about, and Dawnetta Heinz is making that dream come true for 12 brides.

Heinz is a personal trainer in Omaha, Nebraska, and she just celebrated her first wedding anniversary when she started thinking about her dress and what she was going to do with it. As Heinz was packing to move into a new house, she decided she wanted to use her wedding dress as a way to give back.

Heinz went on Facebook and posted the gown from David’s Bridal on a buy/sell/trade group, offering it to a bride who couldn’t afford to buy a new wedding dressHeinz told Yahoo Style, “If we can help somebody else feel good on their special day, I would love to do that.”

Instead of just helping one person, Heinz ended up helping 12! After a dozen women responded to her Facebook post, the overwhelming response made Heinz want to help them all. “I had so many people messaging me telling me their story, how they couldn’t afford it, how they’d have to go to Goodwill. Then I just commented on the post, ‘What would you guys think if we just passed the dress on to the next person?’”

“We were homeless,” Heinz said of her past. “We sold shakes and were barely getting by, living out of our car.”Now that Heinz is more financially stable, she is doing what she can to help others. The dress, which retails for $1,200, will now be worn at many different weddings in the next year.

One of the future brides, Arianna Po, called the dress, “the sisterhood of the traveling dress.” “When I tried the dress on for the first time, there was no altering, there was no nothing. It fit like a glove,” Pro told Yahoo Style. Heinz hopes the dress can continue to circulate, as long as it can withstand wear and dry-cleaning.

Morrison’s father, Will Roberts, celebrated his 93rd birthday on August 17, which is a milestone hospice caregivers didn’t think he’d reach. “At 93 years and 4 days, he witnessed his eclipse,” Hedy Morrison proudly said of her beloved dad. “It was unbelievable. It was pretty special he got to see it and we got to see it together.”

Morrison couldn’t be happier she was able to give back to her father, who had taken care of her all his life. “Twenty years ago I lost my husband in a car accident and I had five children, and he took care of me for all those years,” she said. “And now it’s my turn to take care of him. Four years ago he had a stroke. He hasn’t been able to talk in four years but he’s the most patient, sweet, loving man in the whole wide world.”

Molly Morrison, Hedy’s daughter says her mom is the most caring, selfless person she has ever known, adding that since her grandfather’s stroke, her mom, who lives next door to him, has put him to bed almost every single night. “She does so many amazing things for other people and rarely has time to do things for herself,” said Molly Morrison. “She is truly my hero and I wish there were more people in the world like her.”

Woman Finds Live Frog In Store-Bought Salad And Keeps It As A Pet

A California woman got more than she bargained for when she found a live frog in her salad last Wednesday.

Becky Garfinkel told InsideEdition.com that she purchased an organic baby spring mix salad by Taylor Farms at a Corona Target store, but it wasn’t until later that day that she noticed something suspicious. “I’m halfway through my salad and as I’m going to stab another bit, I see [the frog] peeking out from under the salad,” Garfinkel told InsideEdition.com. “I jumped back. I screamed, ‘There’s a frog in my salad!’”

Garfinkel is a strict vegetarian due to meat allergies and the sight of the frog in her salad made her throw up in the bathroom. “I come out and [my husband] had got [the frog] out of the salad. It had been in the fridge for a couple of hours. It’s barely moving,” Garfinkel said “He presses on his little chest and he started moving.”

Being that Garfinkel is a lifelong animal lover, she decided to keep the tiny frog. The family named him Lucky, and Garfinkel said he is doing much better since the ordeal. The couple used to own a lizard so they already had an enclosure for the frog.

“I couldn’t believe this little, tiny thing has survived all of this,” Garfinkel said. “We’re such animal people. We got [the frog] the moss he needed. He has a full set up. He’s eating. He’s climbing. It doesn’t seem like he went through something so shocking.”

Garfinkel contacted Target through Facebook to alert them of the incident, and they responded in a statement to InsideEdition.com: “Target is aware and we are working directly with the guest. Additionally, our vendor Taylor Farms has been engaged and [is] in contact with the guest.”

Target offered Garfinkel a $5 gift card and she said Taylor Farms apologized for the incident and said they would investigate.

“He’s lucky that I didn’t eat him. He’s so small — just bigger than a dime. It’s disgusting… but at the same time he’s cute. Let’s keep him as a pet… just not in my salad,” Garfinkel said.

One Connecticut woman loved her dog so much that she was willing to give him up when she realized she couldn’t give him the care that he needed and the life that he deserved.

Early one morning, a staff member from the Litchfield Hills Veterinary Animal Hospital discovered a dog left abandoned in a cage with a note attached. According to the note, the three-year-old pit bull named Fatty McFat belonged to a homeless woman who made the heartbreaking decision to give him up so he could have a better life.

“My name is Fatty McFat. I am aggressive only because I’m scared. My owner loves me very much, I am their life! My human went homeless & found out they have a disease & cannot care for me. Please don’t judge them. They tried to rehome me on many documented attempts, no one cared! … I know my human loves because they were & are the only one who gave every attempt to save me, love me, and pamper me,” the note explained.

“It is not fair for me to live in a car for 2 months & my human cries everyday that they are sorry & love me. I am very, very overly protective of my human & will bite anyone who comes near them or I feel is a threat. My human went homeless due to my biting. All my human wants is for me to have a chance, be treated w/ care, dignity & love no matter the outcome. My human is heartbroken & very sad it has come to this. No one would help.”

“I couldn’t imagine how somebody in that situation may feel,” said Harwinton Animal Control Officer Thomas Mitchell, who found Fatty and temporary home with The Simon Foundation and is determined to help Fatty’s owner so they can be reunited. “We’re going to help her find a way to get him neutered, the training he made need and the supports she may need,” Mitchell said.
