After one Houston Police officer was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, he refused to stop working but was taken off patrol and put on desk duty due to his health.

Officer Bert Ramon refused to sit by and do nothing when he knew how many people were stranded and in danger when Houston started to flood from Hurricane Harvey. However, his family, his case worker, and his fellow officers weren’t sure it was a good idea for him to go out in such dangerous conditions.

“I just said he does know his platelet counts are low? So he can bump, bruise, bleed easily,” said Diana Reed, Ramon’s case manager. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m fine.’ I said, ‘Don’t hold me back. I’ll go wherever I need to be,'” Ramon said. “There’s no way I can tell him, ‘You can’t go,'” his wife, Cindy Ramon said. “He says, ‘I’m goin’.'”

For four days, Ramos helped the city’s lake patrol team to rescue about 1,500 senior citizens and children and brought them to safety. “The public comes first. We’re officers. That’s what we do… As long as I feel good, I feel healthy, I’m going to go out there and work,” said Ramon.

“I hope I can inspire other cancer patients that, you know, don’t let this hold you back,” Ramon said. “If you feel strong, don’t let it take over your life at all.”

During a shift at work, one New Jersey waitress answers countless questions about the food, drinks, and service at the restaurant from her customers, which is why she was surprised when two customers asked her a question about God.

While Brianna Siegel was waiting tables at Bar Louie, a young couple came in for happy hour and sat down at a table in her section. After they ordered two burgers and two drinks, they then asked Brianna a question she had never been asked before at work.

“They turned to me and said, ‘Do you believe in God?’” Brianna told the couple that she did believe in God and then went back to work. After the couple ate and paid their $20 bill, Brianna went back to clear the table and discovered they had left a small envelope on the table and instructed her not to open it until after she finished work.

Brianna assumed it was something religious like a mass card, and put it away until she got to her boyfriend’s house later that night. When she finally opened it, she discovered a note and a $1,200 check made out to her name. “It says, ‘P.S. Whenever it gets hard, know God got you,’” Brianna said. “I didn’t know if it was real or if it was a scam.”

“I really had no words, I didn’t know what to say,” said Brianna, who plans on using the generous tip towards nursing school. “There are true caring people out in this world. They want to help me and they don’t even know me.”

Teen Saves Dad After Truck Rolled Onto His Head

What started out as a fun day fishing on a lake in Mississippi nearly turned deadly for one father when his head accidentally became wedged underneath the tire of his truck.

“I still can’t believe it,” said Bob Staub, who nearly lost his life when he went to help his son and his son’s two friends load their boat onto a trailer after a day of fishing on Tunica Lake. It should have been a simple task, but when Staub’s truck got stuck in ‘park’, he was forced to get underneath his truck to try and fix it.

“I knew where to reach under the vehicle and disengage the thing,” Staub said. However, he had forgotten to engage the emergency brake, so the truck began rolling down the loading ramp when he got it into neutral. “My head was three inches from the tire,” Staub said.

“I must have one hell of a hard head because my head was stopping the truck from going backward,” he said. Thankfully, Staub’s son, Nick, and his two friends quickly started working to push the truck forward. After a few attempts, they managed to push the truck a few inches and Staub was able to pull his head away.

“I jumped to my feet,” Staub said. “My head could have been crushed right there in front of my son. These poor kids were just shaking. They had enough sense to do the right thing.” Because of their quick action, Staub walked away with just some bruising and a tear in his ear, which doctors sewed back together. “I shouldn’t be here,” Staub said. “Those guys are heroes.”

About 17 years ago, Lindsey Collins met the man that would one day become her stepfather when he arrived at her house to take her mother out on a date.

From the very beginning, Mark High made sure that the then nine-year-old always felt included. “He would take me to the mall to buy a rare Pokemon card, then go on a date with my mom. I was always so included,” Lindsey said. And as High’s relationship progressed with Lindsey’s mom, Jamie, he happily became a father figure to Lindsey.

“I always treated her like she was my daughter. In my mind, I would adopt her in a heartbeat,” High said. “We would have a discussion. I would explain why and why not to do something.” In 2001, High and Jamie got married and they would often talk about having High officially adopt Lindsey.

The family never followed through with the adoption, so when Lindsey, now 26, was trying to figure out what to do for High this past Father’s Day, she decided to finally surprise him with adoption papers. “It is never too late. If anything ever happened to my mom, their marriage is the only thing that signifies that we’re connected,” Lindsey said. “I wanted to be his daughter.”

“I was totally surprised,” High said about the moment he unwrapped the adoption papers. “I lost it, because I always wanted to be her father.”

“I have the most precious memories of my Grandma Jean doing everything with a song. It didn’t matter if she was doing laundry or making lasagna, she was always singing and her voice was rich, velvety and beautiful,” Ruiz continued.

The first day of school is an important milestone for kids, which is why parents are there to send them off. However, one New York police officer never got to witness the special moment after he was killed in the line of duty.

So when Austin started his first day of kindergarten, about 30 officers showed up to send him off to school in his father’s place. “Since Sgt. Tuozzolo couldn’t be here to put his son on the bus for his first day of kindergarten, his 43 family made sure little Austin was not alone on his first day getting on the bus!” Lt. Emmanuel Kwo wrote on Facebook. “We promise to never forget and to always be here for this family! Have a great day Austin!”

“I was blown away,” Lisa said. “I found out when I opened the front door and was ready to bring Austin out for typical first day for school pictures. They said since day one that they would be here for my family and they really have stayed true to their word.”

“I told him that his daddy’s friends from work came to make sure he had a good start to his first day. He understands to an extent. He was very excited and shocked. It meant a lot to all of us,” Lisa said. “It’s been really difficult. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about and miss my husband and wish he was back here with us. Not just for the first day of kindergarten, but just being able to hang out in the back yard.”

“He was excited when he got off the bus,” Lisa added.” It’s comforting to know that everyone has my back, the way Paul would have had my back, so I can do the right thing for my children.”

Hospital Grants Dying Patient’s Last Wish

Hospice care workers dedicate their lives to making sure people are as comfortable as possible in their final moments, but medical staff from a German hospital are being hailed heroes for going above and beyond to grant a patient’s final wish.

When a 58-year-old sick German woman, whose identity has been kept private, took a turn for the worse earlier this month, her doctors and hospice caretakers told family she didn’t have much time left. Before falling ill, the woman was an avid horse rider so her sister explained to staff that it was important she see her horse one last time.

At first, Josef Rauch from Clinic Fürth planned to have the patient brought to the stables in an ambulance, but when her condition rapidly worsened, they knew that wouldn’t be an option. Instead, Rauch reached out to the stable to see if the woman’s Iceland Mare named Dana could be transported to the hospital.

“If we want to do it, it should happen today,” Rauch said to the owner of the horse farm. The man had been in the middle of preparing for a holiday, but when he heard what was happening, he dropped everything and got Dana to the woman just in time.

“Now, in the presence of her family, the patient has once again been able to pet her former care horse – a moving moment for everyone present,” Clinic Fürth wrote in a post on Facebook. “Many thanks to all interested parties for this unforgettable action – especially to the staff of the Reitstalls Witting Hoff for the commitment and the spontaneous willingness to transport the horse to the Clinic fürth!”

4-Year-Old Boy Kicked Out Of School Because Of His Long Hair

A Texas mom is furious after her 4-year-old son was sent home from his first day of school at Barbers Hill Kindergarten Center because he has long hair.

According to Jessica Oates from Mont Belvieu, Texas, her son Jabez was sent home because he violated the dress code and his hair was “too long.” The school policy states that boys must have a haircut above the eyes, ears, and neck and that a parent or guardian must provide a letter citing “religious or cultural exception,” according to WDSU News.

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

The policy says that boys aren’t allowed to have ponytails or inappropriate accessories, so to solve this, Oates brought Jabez back to school with his locks fastened into a simple black hair tie in a bun. This, however, wasn’t enough and the principal said that Jabez must cut his hair or else he wouldn’t be allowed back at school.

Oates told CW39, “I bought him all his school supplies, his school clothes, his backpack, and he was enthralled. Now he’s confused as to why he can’t go to school anymore.”

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

Oates tried explaining to the school that her family is American-Indian, and she even showed them documentation that says they are Cocopah Indian and her son’s long hair is a signal of strength. “Apparently, the school board is a stickler for rules and can’t think of any religions or cultures that would require long hair,” Oates said.

Oates says of the ordeal, “It has been vile. A lot of people have told me to move and get out of here… I can’t home school because I work full time and I’m trying to find a second job. I’m a single mom and so home-schooling really just isn’t an option. All I have is the public school system and right now, that is absolutely failing my child.”

She started a Change.org petition in an attempt to change the school dress code, meanwhile, Superintendent Greg Poole says Oates has the right to take her child elsewhere.

“Parents have a right to seek an appropriate educational setting for their child, just as Ms. Oates has the right to place her child in a district that reflects her personal expectations for standards of appearance,” Poole’s statement read.

Credit: Facebook- Jessica Oates

“There are procedures in place for addressing concerns over policy if it is Ms. Oates’ desire to have her son educated in Barbers Hill ISD. But we would and should justifiably be criticized if our district lessened its expectations or long-standing policies simply to appease,” he continued.

Oates says she wants to fight back and said she won’t be cutting her son’s hair anytime soon. “My son likes his hair,” she told InsideEdition.com. “He doesn’t understand why he is not allowed in school over something so trivial.”

Do you think Barbers Hill Kindergarten Center is wrong in this matter?

Then I just commented on the post, ‘What would you guys think if we just passed the dress on to the next person?’”

“We were homeless,” Heinz said of her past. “We sold shakes and were barely getting by, living out of our car.”Now that Heinz is more financially stable, she is doing what she can to help others. The dress, which retails for $1,200, will now be worn at many different weddings in the next year.

Woman Finds Live Frog In Store-Bought Salad And Keeps It As A Pet

A California woman got more than she bargained for when she found a live frog in her salad last Wednesday.

Becky Garfinkel told InsideEdition.com that she purchased an organic baby spring mix salad by Taylor Farms at a Corona Target store, but it wasn’t until later that day that she noticed something suspicious. “I’m halfway through my salad and as I’m going to stab another bit, I see [the frog] peeking out from under the salad,” Garfinkel told InsideEdition.com. “I jumped back. I screamed, ‘There’s a frog in my salad!’”

Credit: Inside Edition via Becky Garfinkel

Garfinkel is a strict vegetarian due to meat allergies and the sight of the frog in her salad made her throw up in the bathroom. “I come out and [my husband] had got [the frog] out of the salad. It had been in the fridge for a couple of hours. It’s barely moving,” Garfinkel said “He presses on his little chest and he started moving.”

Being that Garfinkel is a lifelong animal lover, she decided to keep the tiny frog. The family named him Lucky, and Garfinkel said he is doing much better since the ordeal. The couple used to own a lizard so they already had an enclosure for the frog.

Credit: Inside Edition via Becky Garfinkel

“I couldn’t believe this little, tiny thing has survived all of this,” Garfinkel said. “We’re such animal people. We got [the frog] the moss he needed. He has a full set up. He’s eating. He’s climbing. It doesn’t seem like he went through something so shocking.”

Garfinkel contacted Target through Facebook to alert them of the incident, and they responded in a statement to InsideEdition.com: “Target is aware and we are working directly with the guest. Additionally, our vendor Taylor Farms has been engaged and [is] in contact with the guest.”

Target offered Garfinkel a $5 gift card and she said Taylor Farms apologized for the incident and said they would investigate.

“He’s lucky that I didn’t eat him. He’s so small — just bigger than a dime. It’s disgusting… but at the same time he’s cute. Let’s keep him as a pet… just not in my salad,” Garfinkel said.

Not just for the first day of kindergarten, but just being able to hang out in the back yard.”

“He was excited when he got off the bus,” Lisa added.” It’s comforting to know that everyone has my back, the way Paul would have had my back, so I can do the right thing for my children.”

In times of natural disasters, local police officers risk their lives in order to make sure strangers are out of harm’s way and their communities are as prepared as humanly possible.

However, Deputy James Froelich from Florida’s Osceola Sheriff’s Office realized there was still work to be done after helping evacuate elderly residents from an assisted living facility that was in Hurricane Irma’s path. While working at a shelter, Froelich noticed an elderly woman named Pat looked worried and knew he had to do something to cheer her up.

“She was having a hard time,” Froelich said. “She looked really sad. I said, ‘What would put a smile on your face?’ and she said, ‘How about a dance?’ So I stood up with her and started to dance.” Without hesitating, Froelich started singing “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” by Frank Sinatra and began dancing with her.

As Hurricane Irma was pummeling parts of Florida, a team of firefighters and trained medics went out into Coral Springs to search for people stranded in the storm.

42-year-old Joseph Schiavo was part of the crew searching for victims, but while driving down the street he found something else that he thought needed to be saved. Lying on the ground was a fallen American flag, and Schiavo knew he had to do something about it.

“I just thought at the moment that it would be a disgrace to let that lay on the ground,” Joseph Schiavo said. Schiavo’s team agreed that they had to stop and waited as Schiavo ran out into the storm to rescue it. “It felt like an honorable thing to do,” Schiavo said. “It just represented every first responder.”

The Coral Springs later shared footage of the inspiring moment and now Schiavo is being hailed a hero for his actions. “Even in the midst of a storm, we are reminded of the love for our country and community,” the Coral Springs Police Department wrote in a tweet along with the video.

Officer Reunites Mom With Baby He Rescued From Flood

In the wake of devastation in Houston, Texas left by Hurricane Harvey, Corporal Reed Clark was assigned to a high-water rescue team in order to save children with urgent medical needs.

Cpl. Clark, a supervisor of community public relations for the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, set out in a Chevrolet Tahoe with a partner after they were notified about a boy with severe asthma who was stranded in a flooded area.

While on their way to the boy’s location, the pair was forced to abandon the truck when the water got too high. Thankfully, the officers spotted a civilian with jet skis on a trailer and asked to borrow them. “The water was so high that we couldn’t see the street signs,” Cpl. Clark said. “I only knew to turn onto the street because I saw a light pole … the current was picking up very fast, like rapids almost.”

The officer rescued the boy, but while driving back, they spotted a group of about 15 people holding boxes and bags above their head in water that was up to their necks. “They were screaming, ‘Baby! Baby!'” he said. “I saw debris floating by, and I thought the baby was in the water … they saw me looking and pointed back to a woman holding what looked like a blanket.”

“I turned around to come back, and the water went over her head. She held the baby above the water … I grabbed the baby and told her to (meet me at the designated rescue area),” Cpl. Clark said about the mother, Dajauh Zhane Henix. “This mother did what any great parent would do. She realized how fast and deep the water current was…She put her babies life ahead of her own and asked for us to take the baby to higher ground,” Constable Christopher E. Diaz said.

Cpl. Clark brought the baby and other rescued children to the designated rescue area, but found out later that day that the baby’s mother had not yet claimed her. Clark knew his job wasn’t finished and turned to Facebook to help him locate the baby’s family.

Shortly after Clark posted the photo of the baby, a friend miraculously recognized the baby’s photo and connected him with her mother, who had been desperately looking for her baby. “She’s a true hero,” said Cpl. Clark. “She never said, ‘help me’ — she said, ‘get my baby out of here.'”
