Dad Frees Trapped Wife In Labor From Home

Usually, when expecting moms go into labor, they jump in the car and head straight to the hospital. However, when one Atlanta mom’s water broke, she was trapped inside her home after a tree fell on it during a storm.

Heather and Mehrvarz Yavaliollah thought they still had about a month before their twins would be born, which is why they decided to wait until after Hurricane Irma passed to clean up a tree that fell on their home. “Everything looked fine and we were not expecting anything to happen and then Irma came along and changed all of that,” Heather said.

However, the next day, Heather’s water broke but she was trapped inside the house and had no way of getting to the hospital. Her husband, Mehrvarz, climbed out, grabbed a chainsaw from their shed, and started hacking away at the tree himself.

“My wonderful neighbors saw me outside, they kind of knew the situation so they started grabbing limbs as I was cutting them off and helped move them to the street, so very thankful to them,” said Mehrvarz. With their help, Mehrvarz managed to clear a path and rushed Heather to Piedmont Hospital where she gave birth to two healthy boys.

“Sweet little angels, so Irma was no indication of their behavior,” Heather said.

After working all weekend making sure protests around St. Louis, Missouri stayed safe, two police officers were wary when they noticed a man lingering around an empty bus terminal.

Sergeant Howard Marshall and his partner, Officer Abenet Carper, from the St. Louis Police Department noticed the man standing alone, but before they went over to see what he was up to, the man started walking over to them. “He asked if either of us knew how to tie a tie because he had a job interview,” Marshall said.

“He didn’t know how to tie a tie,” Marshall said. “I said, ‘Absolutely.'” Marshall wrapped the tie around his own neck, tied it loosely, then helped Hatcher tighten it. “I thought it was neat,” Carper said. “We always want to have that interaction with the community.”

“It’s good to see they can come to us and ask us for help anytime they need to,” Carper added. “He approached us and it took a lot of strength and courage,” Marshall said about the man, Willie Hatcher, who got the job. “After dealing with [the demonstrations] all weekend, I was tense and everything. It was such an awesome feeling he trusted us.”

When one California father lost his wallet, he and his wife were sure they’d never see it again since it held all of his credit cards and was crammed with cash.

What the couple didn’t realize, was that the wallet was laying near the sidewalk in front of their home. When 18-year-old Tyler Opdyke walked by, he knew he could easily walk away with the $1,5oo in cash but knew it would be wrong to keep it.

“It was not a hard decision because this could be somebody’s rent money and wasn’t mine to keep,” said Tyler.  “God bless this young man’s heart,” homeowner Melissa Vang said. “This gentleman picked it up and left it at our doorstep after waiting for a few minutes because I wouldn’t open the door (for strangers).”

“I later found him. Thanked and rewarded him for his kind gesture,” Vang said. “We hear so many terrible news and barely any good. I think we all need to be reminded that there are still good people out there. His act of kindness cannot go unrecognized.”

Pregnant Doctor Goes Into Labor While Delivering A Baby

When one Iowa OB-GYN resident went to work one day, she thought the only babies she would be delivering would be ones that belonged to her patients.

However, just after helping a patient deliver her baby, 28-year-old Emily Jacobs, who had about a month left in her own pregnancy, realized she was in labor herself. “I noticed what I thought was amniotic fluid of the patient as the baby was delivering,” Jacobs said.

“It wasn’t until I left the room when I realized that it was my water that had broken,” Jacobs said. “I was freaking out a little bit because we were still seeing patients and [my supervisor] just kind of smiled and told me to go back in one of the triage rooms and wait for her to confirm that it was my water.”

A few hours later, Jacob welcomed a healthy baby boy, Jett Jacobs, and she believes the experience made her a better doctor. “It’s definitely made me more empathetic and more aware of what it’s like going through some pregnancy complications,” she said. “People will come in in preterm labor often … very worried about the health of their baby and health of themselves. Until [I went] through it, I can definitely appreciate just how worried and nervous you get.”

While driving home from a church youth group trip, one Oklahoma City man spotted what looked like a doll in a car seat on the shoulder of a busy interstate.

Roger Prater, the driver of the Abba’s House Worship Center van, couldn’t believe what he was seeing so he decided to pull over to check it out. “It was not moving. Its eyes were closed,” Prater explained. “I thought, ‘Lord, don’t let this thing be hurt.’”

“When I went by, he jiggled his feet back and forth and that’s what caught my eyes the most,” Prater said.  “I grabbed the carrier and his eyes popped open. He was well-dressed, no cuts or bruises. The kids on the van, they all kind of teared up.”

The baby appeared to be healthy despite sitting out in 91-degree heat, but Prater immediately called 911. While waiting for first responders, another driver pulled over and helped change the boy’s diaper. When the police arrived, they discovered the baby’s birth certificate, Social Security card, and $5,500 in cash stuffed in and around the car seat.

Soldiers are trained to stay calm in extremely stressful situations, so when one Thai soldier discovered a dying two-day-old puppy he never panicked, but did whatever he could to save it.

According to local reports, the days-old puppy nearly drowned in a downpour and was turning blue by the time it was found in a garage by the soldiers’ barracks. One of the soldiers, Weeraphon Sukudom, grabbed the puppy and quickly got to work trying to revive it.

Sukudom wrapped the puppy in a towel, then started gently patting and shaking the puppy. Instead of giving up when that failed, the soldier decided to try mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After a few attempts, the puppy’s airways were finally cleared and it began breathing again.

Now, Sukudom is being hailed a hero by more than 12.6 million people around the world who saw what he did to save the puppy in a video that was posted on Facebook. Sukudom, however, explained that it was his first time ever performing CPR.

Colorado is home to a plethora of dangerous wild animals like bears, snakes, coyotes, and even mountain lions. So when a Colorado couple’s elderly dog got lost on a nearby mountain, they feared she’d never survive on her own…

While on a walk near Mt. Bross in mid-August with her owner, 14-year-old Chloe ran off to explore like she often did on hikes. Normally, however, she always manages to find her way home. So when she still hadn’t made her way back the following day, her owners, Larry Osborne and Anouk Patel, started to worry.

Osborne and Anouk looked everywhere for Chloe and even posted on Facebook in case anyone had seen her. Yet as the weeks passed, the family started to lose hope since 14-year-old was stranded alone somewhere on the 14,000-foot mountain.

After six weeks had passed most people stopped looking for Chloe, but Trinity Smith and Sean Nichols went out to search one last time for the missing dog after they heard what sounded like a dog barking. “For three hours, I climbed up every chute, trying to keep myself from creating massive rock slides, calling for the dog,” Nichols said. “and right as we were about to head back the dog finally gave a faint bark, giving away her location.”

Nurse Delivers Baby After Mom Went Into Labor At Target

Expecting mothers typically plan on giving birth inside a hospital surrounded by experienced nurses and doctors, but one Atlanta mom never made it to the hospital after she went into labor at Target.

30-year-old Tanya Saint Preux Picault was shopping at a local Target when she began feeling contractions. The baby was coming quickly and there was no time to get to the hospital but, thankfully, a labor and delivery nurse was there shopping with her mom.

Photo by Tanya Saint Preux Picault

“She came back and said, ‘Can I just have my daughter, who’s a labor and delivery nurse, come and look at you?'” Picault said about the moment Caris Lockwood’s mom approached her to see if she could help. Despite the unusual situation, Lockwood got to work delivering the baby as she normally did. Twenty minutes later, Lockwood handed a healthy 7-pound, 10-ounce baby boy named Maleek over to Picault.

Photo by Tanya Saint Preux Picault

“I really wasn’t nervous,” Lockwood said. “It was certainly an incredible experience, and [I] truly believe it was one of those moments where God placed the right people in the right place at the right time. I’m grateful that I was there and able to help bring Tanya’s baby into the world.”

Photo by Tanya Saint Preux Picault

“God had her there for me that day,” said Picault, who has stayed in touch with Lockwood since the birth. “She did such a great job. It was on the news, and I recorded it so I can show [Maleek] as he gets older.”

Soldier Rescues Woman From Car Seconds Before It Exploded

The brave men and women who join the armed forces are trained to stay calm in emergency situations and put their lives on the line to save a life.

So when North Carolina Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Cory Hinkle witnessed a head-on collision recently while driving home from work, he risked everything to save one of the drivers trapped inside her burning car. “I knew there had to be injuries, so I parked and ran instantly to the closest car to me,” Hinkle said.

“It happened so fast,” said driver Brandy Guin, who was on her way to her grandparent’s home to pick her children up when a car driving in the opposite direction crossed over the divider and hit her head-on. “They approximated we were going about 45 miles per hour, and I came to a dead stop in three feet. I bent the brake pedal; I was pushing so hard trying to get it to stop.”

“The airbags all popped from the sides and the front. I tried to put my right foot down … and I saw the bone sticking out of my leg. I had to sit back down and I didn’t know what I was going to do. That’s when he ran up to me,” Guin said about Hinkle.

“I got there in time to grab her and pick her back up. I could smell gasoline … I knew we had to move,” said Hinkle, who carried Guin to the other side of the road. “At that point, I just laid down beside her, because the shocks and tires were exploding. I made her keep looking at me, I made her keep talking.”

Guin started to panic when the car exploded, but Hinkle rolled over her and used his body as a human shield to protect her. “He’s my guardian angel. He deserves all the praise in the world. He’s just an amazing man,” Guin said about Hinkle, who claims he was just at the right place at the right time.

“Anybody that wears the uniform that I wear — any one of them — I’m confident would’ve done the exact same thing in the same situation. The civilians I know would, too,” Hinkle said. “I don’t consider myself a hero. I was in the right place at the right time and I had the training to help keep her calm and the strength to keep her from getting hurt further.”

Kayaker Rescues Newborn Puppies Dumped In River

There are countless ways people can give up unwanted animals without any consequences or risk of punishment, which is why police officers are heartbroken by the cruel way someone tried to get rid of six newborn puppies.

Last month, a kayaker looking to enjoy a beautiful day on a river in Uxbridge, Massachusetts discovered a tied up grain bag bobbing in the water. The kayaker raced over and grabbed the sack from the water and discovered six newborn puppies that miraculously were still alive.

“These puppies were tied up in a grain bag and left for dead after being dumped in the river near River Rd,” the Uxbridge Police Department wrote in a post to Facebook. The tiny newborns were alive, but they weren’t in great shape so the quick-thinking kayaker called Uxbridge Animal Control. Shortly after, an animal control officer arrived and took them to receive care.

“Uxbridge Animal Control Officer responded to the scene and took possession of the puppies. They are all doing well, considering the circumstances, and we believe they will all survive. The puppies are currently being kept together, and are being cared for by a professional until they are able to be adopted,” the police explained.

“If you have any information that could lead us to the low life that could commit such a heinous act, contact Officer Benjamin Smoot at Uxbridge PD,” the police wrote in the post.

Officer Reunites Mom With Baby He Rescued From Flood

In the wake of devastation in Houston, Texas left by Hurricane Harvey, Corporal Reed Clark was assigned to a high-water rescue team in order to save children with urgent medical needs.

Cpl. Clark, a supervisor of community public relations for the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, set out in a Chevrolet Tahoe with a partner after they were notified about a boy with severe asthma who was stranded in a flooded area.

While on their way to the boy’s location, the pair was forced to abandon the truck when the water got too high. Thankfully, the officers spotted a civilian with jet skis on a trailer and asked to borrow them. “The water was so high that we couldn’t see the street signs,” Cpl. Clark said. “I only knew to turn onto the street because I saw a light pole … the current was picking up very fast, like rapids almost.”

The officer rescued the boy, but while driving back, they spotted a group of about 15 people holding boxes and bags above their head in water that was up to their necks. “They were screaming, ‘Baby! Baby!'” he said. “I saw debris floating by, and I thought the baby was in the water … they saw me looking and pointed back to a woman holding what looked like a blanket.”

“I turned around to come back, and the water went over her head. She held the baby above the water … I grabbed the baby and told her to (meet me at the designated rescue area),” Cpl. Clark said about the mother, Dajauh Zhane Henix. “This mother did what any great parent would do. She realized how fast and deep the water current was…She put her babies life ahead of her own and asked for us to take the baby to higher ground,” Constable Christopher E. Diaz said.

Cpl. Clark brought the baby and other rescued children to the designated rescue area, but found out later that day that the baby’s mother had not yet claimed her. Clark knew his job wasn’t finished and turned to Facebook to help him locate the baby’s family.

Photo by Constable Christopher E. Diaz

Shortly after Clark posted the photo of the baby, a friend miraculously recognized the baby’s photo and connected him with her mother, who had been desperately looking for her baby. “She’s a true hero,” said Cpl. Clark. “She never said, ‘help me’ — she said, ‘get my baby out of here.'”

Couple Takes In Over 70 Foster Kids During Hurricane

As a parent, it’s your job to make to do everything in your power to make sure your children are protected and cared for, especially in times of emergencies or natural disasters.

However, when parents from Boca Raton, Florida, found out that over 70 foster children were displaced during Hurricane Irma and had nowhere to go, they knew they had to do something for the kids even though they weren’t technically their responsibility.

During Hurricane Irma, over 70 foster kids were left homeless after the foster care community, SOS Children’s Village Florida, that they call home lost power. “At noon yesterday, we got a phone call from the SOS Children’s Village Florida saying we need help,” Marc Bell said. “‘We’ve been evicted from our shelters and we don’t know where to bring the kids, and we’re not getting any help from the county what do I do?'”

“I said, ‘Bring them here,’” Marc Bell said. “They were hungry. They were tired. They lived in the gymnasium for a week. They hadn’t showered for a week and you saw how excited they were.” Marc and his wife, Jennifer, opened their home to the kids and made sure they were all happy and having fun. “We had manicures for the little girls,” Marc said. “We got Bobby the balloon guy coming later to entertain them. Yesterday during dinner, we had a singer come who plays guitar and sang songs with them.”

“They don’t have a mom or a dad, so they’re scared, and then their house parents, even though they’re there for them, they’re scared too,” Jennifer said. “So to have these kids feel welcomed and to just feel comfortable, as a mom it just makes you feel like you’re doing something good. It’s knowing that later on, these kids are going to look back and they’re going to want to help someone else.”

Hotel Takes In 900 Dogs and Their Families During Hurricane Irma

Hotels aren’t always the most pet-friendly locations, but one Florida hotel went above and beyond to save hundreds of animals that were in danger during Hurricane Irma.

As the deadly storm approached Florida, residents were faced with the difficult decision of staying and putting themselves in danger or evacuating and leaving pets behind since most hotels don’t allow guests to have animals.

However, the Hyatt Regency Orlando opened their doors to anyone needing shelter, including those with four legs and a tail so that people wouldn’t have to make such an impossible decision. “We proudly welcomed over 4,500 guests and over 900 dogs during Hurricane Irma,” said Katie Satava, marketing manager at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.

“Our property is typically pet-friendly and we issue a $150 cleaning charge for guests traveling with pets. With Hurricane Irma, we lowered the cleaning fee to $50 due to the circumstances. We have dog-walking stations located in areas outside of our hotel, but with the winds and heavy rains we conveniently moved these stations to right outside of the lobby doors, beyond the valet, for guests to take their animals out with minimal effects from the elements.”

As Hurricane Irma approached Florida, one animal-loving couple made sure they were fully stocked up on supplies to keep their beloved pets safe during the storm.

However, when Ron and Gretchen Levine, who run A Paw Above Pet Sitting Services, found out that many people in their area were evacuating and couldn’t bring their pets along, they knew they had to do something to keep those innocent animals safe.

Ron and Gretchen decided to take in as many pets as possible from people evacuating, and even went out to pick up pets for people who had been on vacation and couldn’t get home. By the time the deadly hurricane hit, the two managed to take in 46 different animals from about 23 families.

“Everyone has been getting along great; we do separate the smaller dogs from larger ones,” Ron said. “The cats are set up in cat condos in a second bedroom and our office area. All the animals could care less about the storm… As of now we have no idea how long they will stay with us, as our clients’ flights are delayed or canceled.”

Just moments before one of the first football games of this season, all the players from a Connecticut high school were concentrating on beating their opponent.

However, that all changed when players from Jonathan Law High School walked out on the field for the coin toss and saw who one of the referees was, “Honestly, at first they said ‘We have an honorary ref’ and he was wearing dark sunglasses at 7 p.m. and I was like, ‘What the heck?’,” junior player Cole Egersheim said.

Cole and his teammates took a closer look at the referee and realized he was actually his dad, Master Sergeant Joe Egersheim, who was deployed in Kuwait. “Then I took a closer look and saw my dad,” Cole said. “I was just so happy to see him.”

When floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey started pouring into their first-floor apartment, one Texas mom and her 13-year-old son moved to safety at a neighbor’s nearby second-floor apartment, before it got too dangerous.

As the hours passed, the floodwaters kept rising, and at around 2 a.m., 13-year-old Virgil Smith got a call from his friends asking for help because they couldn’t swim and were about to drown. “I was like, ‘Man, I gotta go get them right now,’ ” Virgil said. “I gotta go help my friends.”

In the middle of the night, Virgil swam back to his apartment and grabbed an air mattress since he wouldn’t be able to save everyone on his own, and guided it over to his friend. “I put him, his two sisters, one baby and his brother, and I had my other friend by the hand right here, and I set his momma and his step-dad on the air mattress,” Virgil said.

With help from two neighbors, they pushed the mattress through the dangerous floodwaters to the apartment where his mom was waiting. The brave teen then headed back out to save others he encountered on the way that needed rescuing, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair. “She was like, ‘Help, help!’ and we were like, ‘We got you’.”

“All I’m thinking about is I know he’s able to save. He can rescue, he can swim, and I just had faith in the Lord that everything was gonna be alright,” said Virgil’s mom, Lisa Wallace. “I thank God that no snakes or no alligators bit us,” Virgil added.

Driver Finds Koala Trapped In Wheel After 10-Mile Trip

Wild animals sometimes seek shelter in unusual places, and while a car’s wheel arch provides some protection from the elements, one traumatized koala learned the hard way why it’s never a good place to hide.

Earlier this month, an Australian driver heard an unusual noise coming from the wheel of their car after driving for about 10 miles. After parking the car, the driver went to see where the noise was coming from and discovered two eyes staring back from inside the car’s wheel arch.

The driver immediately called Jane Brister, a wildlife rescuer from Fauna Rescue of South Australia’s Koala, to rescue the terrified creature that must have climbed into the wheel arch before the 10-mile journey. “I soon realized her predicament. I could only see the top of her head and a paw,” Brister said about the koala.

The rescuers removed the wheel and found that the koala thankfully wasn’t pinned to something but was terrified and holding on for her life. “She was hanging on very, very tight,” Brister said. “It’s amazing and it’s a windy road, it’s downhill, so the car would’ve been lurching from side to side,” said Dave Juniper with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service.

“She was crying a little bit, she was a little bit shaken, she was certainly in shock but I rushed her straight to the vet,” Juniper added. Luckily, the koala only suffered minor superficial injuries and was released back into the wild after a week of observation. “After everything she’s been through, she’s had so much stress and trauma, to see her just toddle off and up the tree, and currently she’s found the biggest fork in the tree, she’s snuggled up, she’s fast asleep,” Juniper said.
