Dog Saves His Family From Deadly Rattlesnake

Dogs will do almost anything to protect the ones they love, so when one California dog saw that her human mom and brother were about to be attacked by a deadly animal, she was willing to sacrifice herself.

While on a walk with her family earlier this month, a dog named Nala jumped in front of 10-year-old Cole Lewis and his mom when she spotted a rattlesnake about to strike on the edge of the walking path. When the snake did strike, Nala shielded her family from harm and ended up getting bitten on the nose. “She waited until we were safe. She stood her ground. She didn’t like whimper or anything when she got bit,” Cole said.

“When my son had told me it was light green, I knew that it was a Mojave green (snake) and they’re extremely poisonous, way more so than a Diamondback,” said Cole’s stepdad, Anthony Borquez, who then rushed Nala to the veterinary hospital. Thankfully, they were able to get Nala help fast enough, and she’s back home recovering with her family after being treated at the hospital.

“I grew up with boxers. They’re incredibly protective dogs. That’s why we got the breed. We got her from a rescue. We rescued her and she rescued us,” Borquez said. “She saved my life, and I just want to hang out with her now because she’s my hero,” Cole added.

Employees Give Coworker A Car To Shorten 3 Hour Commute

Despite having to depend on buses and rides from friends and family to get to work, one Tennessee woman never missed a shift at her new job.

“I had to depend on other people or get up early to catch the bus,” said Linda Walton, who started working for Pristine Clean and Organizational Services two months ago. And even though it took her about 3 hours every day to commute, she never complained to her coworkers about her situation or missed a day. “It was a daily struggle. They knew but they didn’t because I didn’t complain.”

However, one day, Walton’s ride home couldn’t come and get her, so a coworker drove her home and was stunned at how long it took. Once everyone realized just how far she traveled every day, they decided to pool their money and buy her a new car. “You have to be that dedicated to ride a bus for two hours and then walk 40 min,” Walton’s boss, Krissy Marcellini Tammaro, said. “She is a great human being.”

“If you were to know Miss Linda, you would want to do this for her. She has a huge heart,” Marcellini Tammaro said. “The determination she has to come to work — who wouldn’t want to reward someone like that?” When the team showed Walton her surprise, she couldn’t contain her gratitude.  “All my prayers were answered,” Walton said. “I prayed the night before I couldn’t get a ride to work… I asked God to fix my transportation problems — I know it was him.”

Cop Saves Boy’s Birthday After He Was Left At School

Police officers are busy enforcing the laws and making sure their communities are safe, but when one Wisconsin cop got a heartbreaking call from a local school about a student, he put everything on hold to save the day.

In the middle of the afternoon, Green Bay Police Officer Darryl Robinson got a call from a nearby elementary school about one of their students that had been forgotten at school. “They said his mother was incarcerated and there was no one on the emergency contact,” said Robinson.

Robinson was also informed that it was the little boy’s eighth birthday, so he was determined to turn the sad situation into a happy one. “We brought the 8-year-old out to a squad, he’d never been in a police car before and was very excited to ride in one,” Robinson said.

Robinson was able to track down the boy’s grandfather before taking him out for a ride in the police car and a special birthday meal. “I asked his grandfather if it was okay if I could take him to McDonald’s before bringing him home. He said yes,” Robinson explained. “He was looking at the toys they put in the Happy Meals. He was excited to hang out with a police officer and get away for a little bit.”

Since that afternoon, word of Robinson’s good deed has spread throughout his community and on social media. “I’m not one for the spotlight but, you know, it was good seeing all the comments and there was nothing negative that I read. That’s pretty rare in this profession,” Robinson said.

Cops Buy Food For Homeless Woman’s Dog

People can often be cruel or dismissive to the homeless, which is why one New York woman broke down in tears after seeing how two police officers treated a homeless woman.

When Kaitlyn McNamara stopped by a local gas station to get some coffee one morning, she saw a homeless woman sitting outside with her dog. As she walked inside, she saw two Buffalo Police officers stop to talk to the woman. “I heard the officer ask to pet her dog before walking into the store,” McNamara said.

While she was buying her coffee, the two officers stepped inside and McNamara noticed they picked up some dog food and treats. “I walked out at the same time as them and heard the officer say, ‘Here, I bought your dog some stuff,'” McNamara said. “Her face immediately lit up.”

“I started crying,” she said. “I didn’t want to intrude on the moment too much so I continued into my car and secretly watched from afar. It was very selfless and genuine and real. It did not feel rehearsed or out of obligation. It was very real. Truly beautiful.”

“We live in a beautiful world and, despite the negativity that often rises to the headlines, there is still good out there,” McNamara said. “A lot of it.”

Hiker Saves Dog Trapped In Abandoned Mine

When one Colorado man was hiking near an abandoned mine, he immediately turned around and left when he heard noises coming from what sounded like a wild animal nearby.

“As soon as I got to the opening, I heard growling,” Preston Gladd said. “I assumed a wild animal was living in there, so I just left. I didn’t want to get attacked.” About a week later, Gladd decided to go back to explore the mine again but when he got there, he started hearing animal noises again.

But before leaving, Gladd realized the animal was actually a dog trapped at the bottom of the mine. “It sounded like a dog barking and baying,” he said. “I went into the mine with my headlamp on, I saw that there was a dog in this shaft that went straight down about 25 feet. I knew I couldn’t get down there by myself, so I went to my house and got my roommate and my girlfriend.”

After rushing back with supplies and food, Gladd rappelled down and rescued the grateful dog. “When she saw us looking down into the shaft, she was so happy. She was running around,” he said. “When I actually got down into the shaft, she was trying to climb up me. She was definitely really happy to see me down there.”

The group immediately took the dog to the vet after giving her some food and water, and thankfully was pretty healthy considering everything she had been through. Gladd then took the sweet dog home but managed to find her owner after footage of the rescue was shared on Facebook.

Gladd is now being hailed a hero for rescuing the dog, but the humble rescuer didn’t do it to be praised. “I love animals. I have my own dogs,” he said. “As soon as I heard barking, I knew I had to go in there and save the dog.”

After a traumatic accident, it’s natural to go into shock. However, after a 13-year-old was in a horrific car accident with his mom and sister, he managed to stay calm and knew exactly what to do to keep his sister alive.

A few weeks ago, one Illinois mom, who has MS and other health issues, was driving a friend’s car with her two kids when she accidentally drove off the road. The car ended up hitting a tree, flipping over, and landing on the roof. Brandi Bass and her 13-year-old son, Caleb, were shaken but didn’t have any serious injuries.

Bass’ 10-year-old daughter, however, had forgotten to fasten her seatbelt and was thrown through the back window. As she was thrown from the car, broken glass shredded her leg. “She was screaming, ‘My knee’s broken! My knee’s broken!’ But it wasn’t broken, her leg was cut,” Bass said. “That’s when we knew she wasn’t in the car.”

“Her leg got cut from the ankle to her knee,” said Bass, who was too shocked to do anything “It was cut all the way to the bone.” But Caleb stayed calm, forced his door open, and ran over to his sister to tie a tourniquet around her leg to stop the bleeding.

Kira was then airlifted to a hospital to treat her injuries. “They told me if wasn’t for (Caleb), she would have bled out,” Bass said. “He keeps telling everybody, ‘I am not a hero.’ And I keep telling him, ‘Yes you are, baby doll. You saved your sister’s life. People are just telling you that you did that.’’’

Woman Gives Haircuts To Homeless People Around The Country

After going to school for cosmetology, one woman decided to use her skills to help homeless people around the country feel better about themselves and their appearance.

In 2016, Felisha Ruehmer couldn’t stop thinking about helping the homeless by giving free haircuts until she finally made a Facebook post to see if others would help out. “When I woke up and checked the post, many people had volunteered to help and given ideas about how I could make it come together,” Ruehmer said.

“I felt like God was calling me to do it so I said I’ll do this if you show me how,” Ruehmer said. In February 2016, she hosted her first free haircut event with the help of some volunteers and gave haircuts to the 106 people that turned up at the event. “It makes me feel like I am respectable again, an average person” said one man whose hair was cut by Ruehmer.

Since that first event, Ruehmer has traveled around the country in an RV and has given 1,300 haircuts to the homeless.  Ruehmer has also started an organization called ‘Walking Tall’, which provides free haircuts, showers, clothes, and food. “If you think about how good you feel when you get your hair done, but it’s one of the last things on a homeless person’s mind,” Ruehmer said. “They are thinking about eating. A haircut can give them the confidence to stand up and instead of feeling like they are less than.”

“It takes so little effort to be good to people,” Ruehmer said. “We are planting seeds of giving back.”

Off-Duty Trooper Saves Choking Man In Restaurant

Police officers are trained to handle any situation. Which is why one New Jersey state trooper knew exactly what to do even though he was having dinner with his son while he was off-duty.

On a Sunday evening, New Jersey State Trooper Dennis Palaia was sitting at a Buffalo Wild Wings eating dinner with his six-year-old son while watching a football game. Shortly after sitting down, Palaia heard a strange noise and discovered that a man nearby was choking.

Photo by  New Jersey State Police

“It sounded like a cough, but it was a little different. So, I recognized that it was different, and within a minute or less, I turned around and realized the guy behind me was completely red in the face,” Palaia said. When he saw the man, Todd Hendricks, holding his hands around his throat, he jumped up and started performing the Heimlich maneuver.

Photo by  New Jersey State Police

“It took five thrusts, and I’ve never had to do it before. It was a little nerve-wracking, but on the fifth one… I could feel him start to breathe again,” Palaia said. “I really thought he was going to go down, and I was nervous. Thinking about it afterward, you start running through what if you didn’t get it out, what would you do then? I would do it again in a heartbeat, of course.”

“Having that officer, off-duty, just step up and do his civic duty and what he signed up for to save someone’s life was amazing,” said K.D. Murphy, who was working behind the bar and witnessed Palaia’s rescue.

While one 13-year-old from Florida was out surfing, he spotted a boater struggling to stay afloat in rough waves after his boat capsized and sunk.

The eighth-grader, Sam Ruskin, knew there wasn’t enough time to paddle back to the beach to get help, so he bravely paddled out to the drowning man. “I saw that he needed some help and I was there and I wasn’t going to let him get hurt or drown,” Ruskin said.

“I paddled to the end of the inlet and like where the current is and I gave him my surfboard. It’s really strong. I was swimming next to him so I was really kind of struggling just to get out of that area because you can get sucked into the jetty,” Ruskin explained.

“We got to where it was shallow enough for him to stand and he said, ‘Thank you,’ and I just went back out surfing,” Ruskin said about the moment that was captured on film by a drone. “When I saw the video and what he had done, I was amazed,” Ruskin’s dad, Ryan, said. “It’s about his character. He didn’t even blink an eye, just went right over there. Jumped off his board. Handed it to a grown man, saved had is life. Came back and said, ‘hey, what’s for dinner, dad?'”

Man Builds Special Halloween Costume For Son’s Friend In A Wheelchair

After one Michigan boy had surgery on his feet and ankles to fix his clubbed feet, he was devastated that he wouldn’t be able to run around with his friends and go trick-or-treating on Halloween.

“I think there was a little bit of nervousness,” neighbor Jamie Peterson said about 7-year-old Karl Warm. “His mom was wondering how Halloween was going to work with Karl in a wheelchair and they have a younger son who was going to be running around trick-or-treating.”

Peterson’s son, Ty, is best friends with Karl, so they decided to figure out a way to help. “It’s a wonderful friendship,” Peterson said. “He and Karl have just been very close. They love playing together, spending time together.” To save Halloween, Peterson and Ty decided to build Karl a wheelchair-friendly military tank costume.

“The idea from his mother was originally building something over his push wheelchair, but Ty and I decided that just wasn’t going to work,” he said. “We needed to do something more impressive – something he can drive, so that’s where the power chair came from.”

After a few long days of work, Peterson and Ty presented Karl with the incredible costume. “I love my son Ty amazingly, but that kid cannot keep a secret for his life. He kept filtering little bits [of information] to either Karl or his mom,” Peterson said. Even though it wasn’t a surprise, Karl and his family were amazed by how well it turned out. “He was so excited when we rolled up to his house with it.”

When one Colorado girl found out a police officer from the local police department was sick, she knew she had to do something to help out.

“Many of you will recall Sidney (4-years-old), who made national news when Longmont Police Officer Bonday came to her house to search out and remove monsters in her new home,” the Longmont Police Department wrote in a post on Facebook.

“Today, Sidney was back at the department with a different purpose.” After finding out Officer Kyle Zulauf was battling pancreatic cancer, she decided to empty her piggy bank, which contained all of her savings. “She wanted to give her piggy bank money,” Sidney’s mom, Megan Fahrenbruch, explained.

The 4-year-old emptied her piggy bank, and presented the officers with about $8. “The cops were crying when she handed the money over,” Megan said. “It was a very emotional moment, just that a child can understand the situation. The police department was overwhelmed.”

Hero Dog Saves Owner And Friend Trapped In Sinking Mud

While out hunting for ducks near Perry Lake, Kansas, Jake Atkins and his friend accidentally got trapped in sinking mud, which they unknowingly walked right into.

“We were walking pretty much side-by-side, and we both sank to knee depth in the mud and we tried to wiggle ourselves out and it ended up being waist deep,” Atkins said. They realized that if they struggled any more, they would only sink further, so Atkins called 911 and they tried to stay as still as possible until help arrived.

Atkin’s dog, Otis, waited nearby but jumped to action when firefighters failed to save his owner. “If they’d walked out, they would’ve sunk too. So there was no way for them to get rope to us. So when those firefighters popped out of the bushes, I said just tie the rope onto Otis,” Atkins said.

Otis bravely walked out onto the sinking mud three times to rescue the gear, Atkin’s friend, and finally Atkins. By the final trip, Otis was crying from exhaustion but refused to rest until Atkins was safe. “He followed me as they were pulling me. He kind of just was walking right beside me as they were pulling me in on my back. It was kind of funny,” Atkins said.

Boy Caught Putting His Candy In Empty Bowl For Other Trick-Or-Treaters

After a night of trick-or-treating with their daughter, one Idaho couple came home and found the bowl of candy they left was completely empty.

“We were not surprised the candy was all taken,” said dad Jesse Robertson, who had left a sign out that read: ‘Take a treat or two and do a trick. And smile, you’re on camera.’ However, when Robertson and his wife watched the footage from their security camera, they realized one child had stolen all of the candy from their bowl.

But as they watched the rest of the footage, they were left speechless by what another little boy was caught doing. After doing his trick- a spinning jump off the porch- Hayden Chapple came back up to the empty bowl and poured his own candy in. “That’s just not something you see happen often with kids that age,” Robertson said.

According to the 11-year-old’s mother, Heather Chapple, he didn’t want other trick-or-treaters to be disappointed. “There were little kids coming up, and Hayden said, ‘Well, that’s sad; they’re not going to have any candy when they go up there,’” Chapple said. “I said, ‘You could always put some candy in there’ — and he just looked at me like I had come up with the best idea ever. So he grabbed a handful and put it back in the bowl.”

“He wanted to keep putting candy in the bowl. I didn’t want anyone to know we were doing it so I said, ‘That’s it, let’s go!’ and so then we left, and we didn’t really think a second about it,” Chapple said. Now, Hayden is being praised by more than 800,000 people who viewed the footage after Robertson shared the video on Facebook. “It’s kind of gotten crazy,” she said with a laugh. “That’s just Hayden. He’s just a good kid. If he hadn’t wanted to do it, he wouldn’t have done it.”

When one Texas high school senior was selected as his football team’s honorary captain for their final home game, his entire extended family showed up to cheer him on.

The only person that wouldn’t be there supporting Jayce Melton was his father, U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Danny Melton, who had been deployed overseas for the past three years. And while it’s been hard for Jayce, he understands why his dad can’t always be there for him. “I just like what he does for the country,” said the proud teen.

But when Officer Melton heard about Danny’s final home game, he was determined to surprise his son and cheer him on. “He thinks I’m still overseas in Italy,” Melton said before the game. “I’m just going to give him a huge hug and tell him how proud I am of him.”

After the announcer told Jayce to turn towards the 50-yard-line just moments before the game, Melton finally got the chance to do just that. “I had no idea,” the stunned senior said after running out onto the field and hugging his dad for the first time.

Teen Receives Fallen Soldier’s Car 15 Years Later

When one Texas woman found out her soldier husband had been killed on July 19, 2003, she was devastated by his loss, especially since their son was just nine months old.

“When he died, I wasn’t thinking ahead to when Justin (his son) would be driving 15 years later,” Jessica Johns said. But this past August, Johns found the registration to her late husband’s car, which she sold after he passed away, and she got the idea to track down the car and give it to her son for his 16th birthday next year.

So Johns turned to Facebook for help searched for the car to surprise Justin. “Can someone please help me find this car? It’s a 1999 Toyota Celica convertible,” she explained. “If you facebookers could work your magic and help me find it, it would be an amazing present for his 16th birthday if it hasn’t become a tin can by now.”

“I was thinking I would go on a yearslong search to find this car,” Johns said. But days later she was contacted by the daughter of the car’s current owner. The woman wasn’t sure if her dad would be willing to sell the car, but passed along his phone number. “It took me 12 hours to get the courage to call him,” Johns said.

Once Johns worked up the nerve to make the call, she explained the story and the Utah man said he needed time to think about it. “I think that your son will get more enjoyment out of having his dad’s car than I would,” the man told Johns when he called her back an hour later.

A Utah-based organization, Follow the Flag, heard about the story and helped raise money to help Johns buy the car back and restore it. “Imagine the feeling of holding the steering wheel of a car your late father once drove. A father you never knew. A father who died in the line of duty serving his country,” the group’s co-founder, Kyle Fox, said. “What a priceless gift.”

This past October, Johns presented the priceless gift to Justin at his 15th birthday party. “I started getting emotional because I never saw John drive that car home,” Johns said. But all the trouble was worth it when she saw Justin’s reaction. “I was waiting for him, for it to click that’s Dad’s car,” she said. “He starts looking at it, gets in. He looks so much like his dad.”

Stranger Gives Man Giving Haircuts To The Homeless A Barber Shop

For almost a whole year, one kindhearted Philadelphia man has dedicated his time to giving free haircuts to the homeless all around the city.

“Me personally, I think I surpassed a thousand haircuts, so many I stopped counting. So it’s been a good year so far,” said Brennon Jones. But as winter approaches, and all the bad weather that comes with it, Jones worried he would have to stop his haircutting mission.

However, barber shop owner Sean Johnson heard about what Jones was doing, and was inspired to help. “When I found out, [I thought] ‘Well I need to be a part of that,” Johnson explained. “‘I need to see what I can do to help.’” Johnson was preparing to open a second barber shop, but decided to give the brand new shop to Jones so he can continue his work helping the homeless.

“[Johnson] said, ‘Listen, I’ve got a building I want you to come check out.’ He said, ‘Do you like this place?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I like it.’ He tossed me the key and said, ‘It’s yours,’” Jones said. “It wasn’t about me giving a barbershop,” Johnson said about his generous offer. “When you look at the homeless and the things that they need, I looked at it as more. After school let out for the summer last year, one Massachusetts boy started thinking about all the things he wanted to do with his free time.

Instead of asking to go to summer camp or on a vacation, 10-year-old Liam Hannon asked his dad, Scott Hannon, if he could make bagged lunches and hand them out to the homeless all around Cambridge. “[Liam] has a huge heart,” Hannon said about his son. “Plus, it was something nice we could do together as father and son and with my wife and baby.”

Soon after telling his father his plans, Liam started “Liam’s Lunches of Love,” and started handing out 20 lunches each week. “[M]any of the people we help are actually really nice and could use just a little kindness in their lives,” Liam said. “It just feels really good to help.”

After seeing how passionate Liam was about his project, Hannon started a GoFundMe to raise money so they could make 60 lunches each week. “It makes me really proud as a dad,” Hannon added. So far, Liam has handed out 300 lunches and even though summer is over, he has continued his community service on the weekends.

“What Scott and Liam have done has been to really give [the homeless] self-respect and kindness in a really tough circumstance,” said Krystal Kelly, director of development at the Hildebrand Family Help Center where Liam also collects school supplies for homeless children. “It’s the first time that any of those folks have been looked at in the eye or anyone has acknowledged their presence. To think that a 10-year-old can be that selfless, it’s amazing.”

Cops Buy Food For Mom Caught Stealing Groceries For Child

After one North Carolina woman and her three adopted children went without food for three days, she had no choice but to resort to extreme measures to feed them.

“We called the churches and everything and everyone was like ‘We go through Interfaith Council, we go through this and go through that’ and nobody would give us anything. We had nothing,” said mom Theresa West, who tried her best to get food from local shelters and church food banks.

When that failed, she went to a local grocery store and stole $36 worth of food. “I had to go out and steal food, and that’s desperate, and I’m sorry for doing what I did but my kids were hungry,” West said. But as West left the store, employees got her license plate and reported it to the police.

Hillsborough Police Department Senior Corporal Keith Bradshaw and Officer First Class Candace Spragins went to West’s home and questioned her about the incident. West admitted to stealing the items and returned everything, but Officer Bradshaw realized the family was just desperate for food. “I opened the refrigerator and it was completely bare. I think there was one little pack of cheese in it,” Bradshaw said.

“This was not a crime out of greed but one seen as necessary by a mother trying to feed a child,” the Hillsborough Police Department explained. While Spragins took West into custody and charged her with theft, Bradshaw went back to the store and bought $140 worth of groceries.“We said, ‘How can we help that and in the same sense help her so that she doesn’t have to feel that she has to go do those things?’” Bradshaw said.

“Sometimes police work is not cut and dry. We are people first and cops second,” the officers said. “My favorite verse is Matthew 23:24, ‘Whenever I was hungry, you fed me,’” West added. “I’m struggling so hard to make it and just to have somebody to come help me is just been a miracle.”
