When a mother leaves her child in the care of others, she only does so when she’s certain that her little one will be safe with whoever is looking after them. That’s a mother’s responsibility and one most take seriously.
Lindsey didn’t think twice about leaving Kane with her boyfriend. They were close already and Lindsey had no reason to be suspicious about anything. Then again, accidents do happen, although sometimes they aren’t really accidents…
Role Model
Gyasi said he adored Kane and he often played with with him when the little one was bored. While Kane was just a touch past his second birthday, his mom’s boyfriend was a real father figure in his life, and was even considered to be a “role model” for the toddler after his mother and father divorced soon after his birth.
Responsible Babysitter
Lindsey worked a lot and often needed to keep unsociable hours due to the nature of her job. Fortunately for her, and for Kane, her boyfriend Gyasi had a more flexible schedule and was always happy to step in and babysit Kane when Lindsey was at work or running errands. It was no trouble at all for Gyasi as he loved Kane and always found something fun for the two of them to do together, despite their age difference…
Dinner Time
Mom was out the house and it was just the boys at home. Well, there was a girl there too; Kane’s baby half sister who was sound asleep in her nursery. Gyasi prepared some food for an early supper as he and Kane communicated about what they would play after they had eaten.
What To Play?
Whatever they had decided to play never actually happened though, after Kane apparently fell over somewhere in the house. He sure was crying and making a big deal of it, and as soon as Gyasi heard the ruckus he rushed upstairs to locate the boy, treading carefully so as not to wake the baby girl who was sleeping. He found Kane, worse for wear, sprawled out on the bathroom floor…
What Happened?
Gyasi claimed his instincts kicked in as his adrenaline pumped, trying to multitask a few different things at once. He alleges that after Kane fell and had some sort of accident, he carried him to his bedroom to let him lay down. He then went straight to check on the baby who he assumed would have stirred by now with all the noise in the house.
‘Very Tense’
According to Gyasi, Kane was “very tense” when he carried him to his bed to rest, whatever tense means in this case. He then went to check on the baby girl who, amazingly, was still asleep in her crib. When he returned to Kane’s room, the situation took a serious turn for the worse…
Not Moving
Now Gyasi was panicking, at least according to his version of the events on that fateful night of babysitting gone wrong. When he returned to check on Kane, he alleged, the boy was unresponsive and not moving. Gyasi was no doctor by any means but he knew he had to do something to help Kane.
Trying To Help
Gyasi said that despite his panicked state he rushed over to Kane and began shaking him in order to revive him. When that didn’t work, he took Kane to the bathroom and held his head and face under cold running water. However, nothing was helping to revive the boy whose condition was getting worse and worse moment by moment…
Straight To Hospital
It was at this point that Gyasi called Lindsey and told her what had happened. With that, she rushed home and arrived just as her boyfriend and a family friend were headed out the door on their way to St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville. Kane was now vomiting violently and was losing color in his face and body rapidly.
Mother Shocked
Lindsey said that she was in total shock when she saw what state her son Kane was in. She soon followed to the hospital, thoughts rushing through her head all the way there about what had happened to her little boy. “I’ve never been in a situation like that before,” she said. “I’ve never seen a child hurt like that before in my life. I’ve never seen this before in my life. So it was just too much for me, after I held Kane.”
Special Treatment
Medical services afforded Kane the very best treatment possible, airlifting him from St Elizabeth’s to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis for specialist treatment. However, whatever happened to Kane back at the house was enough for him to be pronounced dead soon after paramedics arrived. The staff at the hospital then contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, who notified the sheriff’s department about the tragic incident.
No Injuries
Despite what investigators thought, Lindsey said she didn’t believe in her heart that her boyfriend hurt Kane in any way. As she said to reporters, “There was no physical injury on Kane at all —there was nothing on him. No bruises, no blood — nothing. He was just acting funny.” But why did police suspect foul play on behalf of Gyasi?
Just Happened
For his part, Gyasi promised Lindsey that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, “He swore up and down that it had just happened and he was getting ready to call me,” Lindsey said. During interview, Gyasi told police that while he didn’t see the child fall, he did hear a thud on the ceiling. When he found him, he claims, Kane was lying on his back on the bathroom floor, indicating he may have hit his head on the side of the tub or sink.
Forensic Contradictions
Suspicions that Gyasi had done something to hurt Kane were raised after the forensic pathologist working the case told police that “the bleeding on the brain could not have been caused from a fall onto a flat surface.” With that, Gyasi further raised suspicions when he texted his girlfriend saying, “they are accusing me” and “I’m already at the county.”…
No Killer
While Gyasi was questioned by police at the time he wasn’t formally charged. Gyasi has no history of violence and had no good reason to hurt Kane. The fact that when Lindsey returned home he was lovingly holding the boy in his arms on a reclining chair would not be the behavior one would expect from a child murderer.
Criminal Charges
For their own reasons, and reasons that will only become clear when the trial takes place, detectives feel they have a case to suggest that Gyasi did purposefully injure Kane on that night. While Lindsey told reporters, “Everything has been ripped away from me,” adding, “I’ve never really had much except for him and my kids,” she wrote to the judge on the case to request that Gyasi’s bail be significantly reduced.
Bail Request
Judge Zina Cruse originally set bail at $1 million for 24-year-old Gyasi Campbell. However, with that kind of figure for bail, Campbell wouldn’t be getting out of jail any time soon. Lindsey clearly doesn’t believe he’s guilty as she wrote a heartfelt letter to Judge Cruse, pleading with her to reduce the bail set for Gyasi.
Bail Reduced
For her own reasons, Judge Cruse saw fit to severely reduce Gyasi’s bail – from $1 million to just $150,000. That means that he would need to come up with at least $15,000 to get himself out of jail for now. And that would need to be $15,000 in cash…
First-Degree Murder
Prosecutors seemed pretty confident that they could secure a first-degree murder against Campbell, although they aren’t giving up the evidence they have against him easily. But Lindsey feels that the charge is a step to far, as she wrote, “I am not saying I think he should be free. I believe there is a proper charge & sentence for the death of my son. And I do not believe 1st degree murder is that charge.”
Living In Hope
It’s totally understandable that Lindsey wants closure by knowing for sure what happened to her son Kane on that night. In fact, it seems that the main thing she needs in order to move on with her life is closure, and that won’t come until her now-ex boyfriend Gyasi’s trial comes to court. For the time being, Lindsey said, “I feel like there are people that he knows and talks to that know what actually happened. And I feel like they should tell me.”
