Mia Irizarry Story

When a citizen gets sworn in as a police officer, they dedicate themselves to enforcing the law, as well as protecting and serving their communities. We’d like to believe that in general, that’s exactly what police officers do after putting on the badge. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

One summer day in Chicago offers an example of one police officer not doing the job he signed up for. And with a little help from a smart phone, followed by an immediate public outcry for something to be done, one woman was able to bring justice to an otherwise incompetent public servant, and the man who ruined her birthday.

Birthday Plans

Mia Irizarry Story
  www.mapquest.com

In early June 2018, a Chicago woman was planning her upcoming birthday and decided to celebrate the day by hosting a small barbeque with friends and family at the Caldwell Woods forest preserve in Chicago, Illinois.

Party Time

Mia Irizarry Story
  www.lcfpd.org

The woman paid for a special permit to ensure that on the day of her birthday party, a picnic and barbeque area was available to them. When the day of the party finally came on June 14, 2018, she and a family member arrived early to start setting up…

A Damper On The Festivities

While setting up for her 24th birthday party, the woman was excited about the fun, relaxing day that she had planned. Sadly, however, a stranger who was at the picnic grove that afternoon made it his mission to ruin her birthday.

A Seemingly Harmless Question

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

As the young woman was setting up a picnic table before other family members and friends arrived, a complete stranger walked over to her and asked her a random question about the shirt she was wearing that afternoon…

The Flag

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

According to the woman, Mia Irizarry, a man who appeared to be intoxicated approached her and asked if the shirt she was wearing featured Texas’ state flag. At first, Mia didn’t think anything about the random question and replied that it was actually the Puerto Rican flag.

The Harassment Begins

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“You should not be wearing that in the United States of America,” said the stranger, who appeared to be drunk as he was slurring his words slightly. Then the man, who has been identified as 62-year-old Timothy Trybus, started questioning if she was a legal resident of the country…

A Legal Citizen

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“Are you a citizen? Are you a United States citizen?” Trybus repeatedly asks Mia, who tried to explain that as a Puerto Rican citizen, she automatically has citizenship in the United States since it is an unincorporated territory of the country.

Wasting Her Breath

Mia Irizarry Story
  www.wipr.pr

“Yes I am,” Mia answers calmly. “Then you should not be wearing that,” Trybus replies aggressively. “You should be wearing United States of America flag.” At that point, it became obvious to Mia that the man couldn’t be reasoned with and wasn’t going to leave her alone…

The Aggression Increases

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“You’re not going to change us, you know that,” Trybus shouted. Since Trybus was getting increasingly aggressive, Mia was afraid that the uncomfortable confrontation would turn physical. Before it escalated to that point, Mia decided to call the police.

Calling For Help

Mia Irizarry Story
  www.kxro.com

She hoped that if she reported the harassment so that an officer could help her defuse the situation. As Mia waited for an officer to arrive, she took her phone out and started recording what was happening as proof so Trybus couldn’t deny it later on…

Help Arrives

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

Thankfully, it was only a few minutes until an officer from the police department of the Forest Preserves of Cook County arrived. As Mia tried to explain the situation to Officer Patrick Connor, Trybus continued the harassment and repeatedly intruded in her personal space.

A First-Hand Witness

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“You should not be wearing that in the United States of America,” Trybus shouted in front of the officer. Sadly, Officer Connor did nothing to stop the confrontation or encourage Trybus to leave Mia, who had paid for a permit to use the space in peace, alone…

A Live Stream

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“I am renting this area and he’s harassing me about the shirt that I’m wearing,” Mia said. “Officer, I feel entirely uncomfortable, can you remove … please officer,” Mia asked the officer as calmly as she could while continuing to film the interaction and stream it directly to Facebook Live.

Refusing To Protect And Serve

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

“Officer, I’m renting, I paid for a permit for this area … I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?” No matter how much Mia pleaded, however, Connor just stood there refusing to help her as Trybus harassed her…

Encouraging The Aggression

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

Rather than help Mia, Connor turned his back and let the harassment continue. “As you can see the police are not even — he’s not even grabbing him. Like this guy is just walking up to me. He basically got in my face, damn near almost touched me,” Mia said to the camera as she recorded.

The Incident Goes Viral

Mia Irizarry Story
  Mia Irizarry / Facebook

Ultimately, a female officer arrived at the scene and finally got the situation under control. “You don’t come here harassing people,” the officer told Trybus. “People have just as much right to be here as you, and when you’re drunk, you don’t belong here.” While the female officer helped protect Mia, the footage of her colleague’s response was already uploaded on Facebook and the footage quickly went viral around the country…

An Investigation Begins

Mia Irizarry Story
  sites.google.com

‏”After the incident, we immediately launched an investigation pursuant to our personnel policies into the response of our officer,” the park said after the public expressed their outrage. “The investigation is ongoing and the officer involved has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome. The intoxicated individual involved in the incident was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.”

Escaping Punishment

Mia Irizarry Story
  chicago.suntimes.com

In the wake of the controversy, Officer Connor avoided punishment by resigning from the department before the investigation into the incident was completed. “I am severely disappointed I will never get to hear from this man, this officer, as to why my safety, no why my life, had so little value for him,” Mia said. “I want the ex-officer to be really be held accountable, whatever that looks like. I can honestly say that I feared for my safety…”

Work Isn’t Done

Mia Irizarry Story
  www.latinorebels.com

“I am sincerely sorry this happened. I’ve seen the video, and I am outraged that this would happen anywhere, but especially sad it happened in our Forest Preserves. Clearly, our work isn’t done,” General Superintendent Arnold Randall said. “Certain aspects of the investigation are continuing, as it relates to the State’s Attorney’s investigation of potential criminal charges against Mr. Trybus. And, we are continuing our internal review because we know that we can learn from this incident.” So far, Trybus has also been charged with 2 felony hate crime charges and was ordered to undergo an alcohol assessment.

Moving Forward

Mia Irizarry Story
  chicago.cbslocal.com

“We are deeply committed to inclusivity and make every effort to infuse our work with that commitment. But we know there’s always room for improvement and we want to use this incident as an opportunity to grow stronger,” Randall added. “It was extremely surreal to think that someone whose job is to protect and serve could just completely walk away,” said Mia, who is still frustrated but is glad that Connor won’t be able to treat anyone else the way he treated her.

Government Employee Brought In To Clean House Gets Awful Surprise After A Job Well Done

McNeil Island Story

One thing that political candidates sometimes like to promise their constituents is that they’ll “clean up” the current situation, whatever that happens to be. They, in an attempt to win votes, promise to correct everything the current administration is doing wrong. By unspecified, vague means, other than simply winning office, they say they’re going to end bureaucratic waste and inefficiency.

Of course, it almost never happens after they win, take office, and hire or appoint people under them to help “clean up.” Among a slew of reasons, the primary cause of no actual cleanup is probably that tackling systemic problems within an established system is complex, not to mention time consuming. But when one man was actually making headway in cleaning up his department, he would find that not everyone was happy with his efforts.

Not Quite Prison

McNeil Island Story
  Google Maps

In Washington State, there exists a facility that’s somewhere between a prison and a psychological treatment facility. McNeil Island is a tiny island between Tacoma and Olympia on the Puget Sound that is home to a civil commitment facility for violent sex offenders.

After Time Served

McNeil Island Story
  www.clui.org

After Washington’s most dangerous sex offenders serve out their prison sentences, they are evaluated by a board that determines the likelihood of them repeating their crimes. Those determined likely to reoffend can’t be sent back to prison so, instead, they are involuntarily committed to McNeil Island…

Two Ways Out

McNeil Island Story
  www.nwnewsnetwork.org

Because it is technically a treatment center and not a prison, those sent to McNeil island have no set release date when they arrive there. There are only two ways off the island: through actively engaging with the psychological treatment until the state deems a person is no longer a threat to society or by passing away.

Controversial Policy

McNeil Island Story
  www.absherco.com

This type of involuntary committal, practiced by Washington and 18 other states, is considered controversial with critics claiming it effectively amounts to extra prison time on top of what has already been mandated by law. At the same time, proponents of the practice claim it protects society from some of the most dangerous and heinous criminal elements…

Disconnected

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

Regardless of the controversy surrounding it, the facility at McNeil Island was made very secure by its isolation. It was completely disconnected from the rest of Washington and could only be accessed by the boat that arrived once every two hours. But that isolation also made the facility difficult to maintain.

There Are Problems

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

When Jon Hardy took over as the state supervisor of maintenance workers at the beginning of 2016, he knew about the unique challenges the job would present before he came on board. He also knew about some problems that weren’t due to the isolation of the island…

Clean It Up

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

Hardy had been hired specifically to address problems of poor work performance, attendance, drug and alcohol abuse, and “a general attitude of laziness, complacency, and inactivity,” among the maintenance staff. A culture of complete apathy had developed and it was his job to set things right.

Widespread Issues

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

And it wasn’t as if it was a problem of a few bad apples ruining the bunch. There were only 21 employees for Washington’s Consolidated Maintenance Operations division on McNeil Island and there were apparently problems with just about every one of them…

Slacking

McNeil Island Story
  www.yourhealthsupport.in

“Employees were taking advantage of the system and receiving taxpayer funds for little or no work,” Hardy would later say through a lawyer. He also learned that his bus drivers “had obvious and severe problems with attendance and substance abuse, often on the job.”

Consistent Failure

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

“His construction and maintenance staff members were not only consistently failing to complete any work, but they were taking extremely long meal breaks, often as long as 2-3 hours,” the statement would continue…

Lazy Lies

McNeil Island Story
  www.seattletimes.com

There were work orders that were several years old that had yet to be fulfilled and some employees who, beyond doing a poor job, were simply lying about their work hours, falsifying their attendance records, and being paid for time where they weren’t even on McNeil Island, Hardy said.

Let’s Get Down To Business

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

As he was brought in to do, Hardy started addressing the problems right away. When the lax attitude ended at the top and Hardy started holding the maintenance workers accountable for their misdeeds, things quickly started to change…

Great Work

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

Over the next few months, Hardy was able to largely turn his department around. He was receiving praise from upper managers for “actually assigning work and inspecting it,” they very basic elements of his job. But while upper management was pleased, the workers were apparently not.

Grumbling

McNeil Island Story
  www.videoblocks.com

In the middle of April, Hardy had a meeting with his boss where he was informed that the workers were unhappy and had come to him with a number of complaints. They discussed the worker’s perceptions of Hardy and set goals for him moving forward. It seemed like a productive meeting. The next day, Jon Hardy was fired…

You Can’t Be Serious

McNeil Island Story
  www.videoblocks.com

Hardy was shocked. He’d been brought in to clean up the department’s dysfunction and, as he began to make progress along those lines, he appeared to have been fired for doing that very thing. He believed that the reason was he was doing “too good” of a job.

That’s My Job

McNeil Island Story
  www.channelpartnersonline.com

“His work was initially rewarded with excellent reviews, until the extent of the employee fraud began becoming increasingly clear,” he would allege in a lawsuit. You would think that wouldn’t be a problem but apparently it was…

Rocking The Boat

McNeil Island Story
  www.thenewstribune.com

That’s because, according to Hardy, “the extent of the employee fraud became increasingly clear and higher-level employees at McNeil Island began to realize that his work in ending the fraudulent activities, and doing what he was requested to do, was disturbing an ongoing boondoggle.”

Threatening Our Pockets

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

Cleaning house was “jeopardizing the McNeil Island workers and supervisors’ ability to receive taxpayer funds for doing little to no work.” In short, they Hardy’s work was putting their do-nothing jobs at risk, Hardy’s lawsuit alleged…

See You In Court

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

The lawsuit Hardy filed was seeking unspecified damages for being wrongfully fired from the job, just months after he’d started it. The short time of employment was made even worse by the fact that he’d left a position in Arizona he’d held for 30 years to work for Washington State.

Timeless Problem

McNeil Island Story
  vicenews / Twitter

Whatever the eventual outcome of the lawsuit, the story highlights some of the problems with the justice system, the same sorts of problems that can occur in any government project that has a high budget and insufficient or ineffective oversight. In such situations, corruption is almost inevitable.

‘American Dream’ Example Turns Out To Be A Complete Fraud

Elizabeth Holmes Story

In America, it’s common to be shown billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, who’ve amassed spectacular wealth because of their innovation, whilst being told that the “American Dream” is a reality because of such entrepreneurial spirit. And, considering what people like the aforementioned have done for society, it’s not unrealistic, as long as we have an idea worthy of the free market and can bring that idea to fruition.

But at what point does a desire to create wealth turn into a simple obsession with money? And what happens when someone is willing to do the unthinkable just to make that desire come true?

Self-Made

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.dailymail.co.uk

Elizabeth Holmes, our protagonist, was a self-made billionaire. By the time she was supposed to graduate college, she was already worth nearly $10 billion. She was one of those people who, by way of a brilliant idea, was able to direct the course of her own life while changing the lives of millions of Americans — a rare accomplishment to say the least.

Dropout

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.usatoday.com

Before she was the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world, Holmes was a star student attending the prestigious Stanford University. In 2003 though, she came up with an idea that would take her away from those hallowed halls of learning and into the realm of big business. She left the university as an aspiring entrepreneur.

Cheap And Efficient

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  credit

Holmes’ idea, in theory, was certainly worth the wealth it would eventually help her accumulate. She claimed her proprietary machines could run hundreds of medical tests using only the blood from a tiny finger-prick. The idea, she claimed, would also be cheaper than anything else on the market, with more functionality to boot.

Theranos

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.businessinsider.com

Elizabeth’s company, Theranos Inc. was slated to revolutionize the way blood was tested. By 2013, her burgeoning company rose to national attention. According to Elizabeth herself, the technology they were creating was, as she so aptly put it, “the most important technology in the world.” It soon took off in a big way…

Modifications

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.wired.com

Soon enough the blood-testing machines were beginning to roll-out into retail chains. Walgreens, one of America’s most popular chain pharmacies. The idea was to modify their standard blood-testing machines to run the Theranos tests as well. On paper, it all seemed like the natural next step.

High Profile

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.pri.org, www.wbur.org, & Wikipedia

At the same time, as the deadline for the roll-out neared, Elizabeth and her corporate management were using the company’s glowing public profile to help raise more money for future endeavors. In the course of this, Theranos’ board of directors took on the likes of Henry Kissinger, Defense Secretary James Mattis, and former Secretary of State George P. Shultz…

One Problem…

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.brandchannel.com

Elizabeth Holmes claimed that Theranos’ testing device would be able to run hundreds of medical tests on a single drop of blood. It was a big claim to make, and it was one that had brought her much support along the way. There was just one problem, the technology was little more than science fiction: it didn’t work.

Revelations

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.khn.org

Former employees began to crawl out of the woodwork with tales of the true capabilities of the Theranos machines. Word spread that some of the blood samples returned contradictory and in most cases, inconclusive results when retested. What’s worse than all that, was the fact that CEO Elizabeth Holmes had lied to Walgreens about it: and that’s not all…

Crumbling

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.cbsnews.com

Elizabeth, whom the world had believed made her fortune through the invention of the Theranos Edison machines, was little more than a fraud. She told Walgreens that the system was ready to use on patients and thus the pharmacy put the devices in every store. When word got out that the machines didn’t work, the deal and more began to crumble.

Retraction and Correction

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.genalyte.com

Eventually, the company had no choice but to retract and then correct the results of tens of thousands of medical tests performed on their technology. The machines and the company were sanctioned by regulators at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Elizabeth was banned from running her own company…

Shutting Down

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.wired.com

Over the next few tumultuous months, the company was forced to let go many of its employees. Then, because it was no longer licensed as a lab, it also shut down all its consumer-testing operations. The idea was to focus on developing new technology, though strangely enough, they didn’t seem to want to fix the existing technology.

Shady Deals

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.dailyherald.com

Despite all the news about the company’s changing direction, Elizabeth decided to hide the change from the Walgreen’s executives they had been working with. She even continued to conduct demonstrations using Theranos’s machines and lead many other pharmacy executives on tours through the, not functional, Theranos labs…

Duped

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.cnn.com

Ms. Holmes, along with the company’s ex-president, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, were repeatedly duping future investors into thinking that the company, the products, their services. its business relationships, and its prospects for long-term growth, were all still wearing a healthy coat of black. The SEC was on them for it, though.

Patently False

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.patch.com

Holmes and Balwani used marketing materials, statements to the media and other communications to defraud potential investors even while they knew that their representations of Theranos technology were false. When the SEC heard that she was still conducting these demonstrations, they took action…

Barred

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.cnbc.com

The U.S, regulators barred Holmes from running a clinical company. Then, she and Balwani were both criminally charged with defrauding investors. Their lies had finally come around to bite them in the behind, and it was only during the SEC investigation that they learned the financial extent their crimes.

Lies

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.vanityfair.com

The indictment listed wire fraud as the official charge against both Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani and Elizabeth Holmes. Apparently, during the medical-testing company’s start-up period, they had raised more than $700 million and all of that had been through the outright lie that their miraculous machines could “change the face of medical testing…”

Indicted

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.cbsnews.com

The pair had defrauded investors, doctors and patients as well, all in the pursuit of a dream that never actually got off the cutting room floor. Nine counts of wire fraud later, and the two of them had to make some serious decisions about Theranos’ future. Before they could levy the charge against them though, Elizabeth had one more move.

Stepping Down

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.wsj.com

Holmes’ surprise came mere moments before she got hit with the indictment. She announced that she would be stepping down from as CEO of Theranos. While it was clear that she saw the whole company unraveling, at least she managed to save some face and some jobs by distancing herself from the company she’d lied so hard to create…

No Transparency

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.zimbio.com

Acting US Attorney Alex Tse laid into the whole situation by decrying Holmes and Balwani’s actions. “Investors large and small from around the world are attracted to Silicon Valley by its track record, its talent, and its promise,” he said. “They are also attracted by the fact that behind the innovation and entrepreneurship are rules of law that require honesty, fair play, and transparency.”

Fun While it Lasted

Elizabeth Holmes Story
  www.bloomberg.com

Elizabeth Holmes had been a brilliant example of the American dream, but her actions from the start revealed a remorseless and cunning liar who was willing to do anything at all to get ahead of the competition: even if she didn’t have a working product. The true price she’ll eventually pay remains to be seen, but I guess it was fun while it lasted.

Kidney Infection Story

When you’re experiencing pain, there are often external signals that can point toward the cause. Things like fever, swelling, or discoloration of the skin make it easier for a person or their doctor to determine exactly what’s wrong.

But with some kinds of maladies, the major indicators are all on the inside, making it that much harder to make a diagnosis. In the case of a kidney infection, it can be hard to distinguish some of the symptoms from normal muscle pain.

Pyelonephritis

Kidney Infection Story
  www.medicalexhibits.com

A kidney infection, which is known medically as pyelonephritis, is when harmful bacteria somehow making its way into the kidneys. The bacteria responsible in about 90% of cases is Escherica coli, more commonly known as E. coli.

Common Bacteria

From there, the bacterial infection can spread to the kidneys, then on to one or more of the kidneys. But it’s important to note that not all kidney infections develop from a bladder infection. If a person has a weakened immune system, a kidney can become infected through the bloodstream.

Bloodborne

In addition to being painful, a kidney infection that goes untreated can lead to the spread of infection to the blood and other organs, permanent damage to the kidneys, or even death. That’s why it’s important to identify and treat an infection as quickly as possible.

Identifying The Symptoms

Kidney Infection Story

To do so, the warning signs of a kidney infection have to be clearly identified. Unfortunately, back pain is one of the most common symptoms, which is often confused for general back pain…

Typical Back Pain

Kidney Infection Story
  laurelblackmusic.blogspot.com

Back pain can be caused by a number of different things, including the usual strains and sprains that damage the muscle tissue or ligaments of the back. This usually happens from lifting heavy objects, sudden and extreme movements, twisting, or some sort of impact.

Also, use the bathroom as soon as possible after intercourse. This helps clear any bacteria from the urethra, reducing your risk of infection. And when you’re finished using the bathroom after intercourse or at any other time, wipe from front to back, rather than back to front to prevent bacteria from spreading from the anus to the urethra.

Time To End The ‘Good Or Bad’ Debate On Carbohydrates

0

Carbohydrates Story

Ever since Robert Atkins first revealed his miracle “Atkins Diet,” a regiment that requires very close control of carbohydrate consumption, in the early 90s, some nutritionists have been obsessed with eschewing carbohydrates altogether. Even today, after learning many more decades’ worth about nutrition, carbohydrate consumption is still a topic of debate. The problem is, regardless of the facts presented on the subject, no one can seem to make up their mind on whether carbs are good or bad.

Some say that carbs are good for exercise and nutrition, others say they’re the first step on the slippery slope to diabetes. Frankly, this constant back and forth is confusing for most of the general public. Because of this ambiguity, we’ve compiled some general information on what constitutes “good” and “bad” when it come to carbohydrate consumption.

Low-Carb or No Carb?

Carbohydrates Story
  blog.myfitnesspal.com

There have been a number of fad diets over the years. Some of these, like the popular Atkins Diet, instruct people to avoid carbs entirely, focusing only on protein. Others speak of eliminating carbs for a time, before re-introducing them into your diet slowly. Most recently, the low carb, high fat keto diet has become the newest fad.

Confusing Diets

Carbohydrates Story
  blogs.bmj.com

It’s safe to say that there are many different schools of thoughts in the world of nutrition when it comes to carbohydrates and diets. It’s precisely because of these so-called “fad diets” that the majority of people, particularly those who have struggled with weight loss for years, are confused about what they should do.

No Single Solution

Carbohydrates Story
  www.healthline.com

Now, many of these diets work just fine for some people, but as we’ve learned, every body is different. People react differently to different types of food, carbs or otherwise. Therefore, if we can’t center-in on a carb-centric diet, we need to explore the carbs themselves. First and foremost we need to ask the question: what exactly is a carbohydrate?

What Are Carbs?

Carbohydrates Story
  www.jooinn.com

The long and very scientific answer is that a carbohydrate is a molecule that consists of carbon hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Carbs are one of the three macronutrients, like it’s fellows, protein and fat, that we as human beings need to sustain our metabolism and our energy levels. As we consume carbohydrates, our digestive system converts them to glucose, which is burned to produce heat and energy.

Three Categories

Carbohydrates Story
  www.hellodoktor.com

There are several different types of carbohydrates and it is the distinction between them that we shall discuss here. In understanding the three categories, we can determine which carbs are good for us and which are bad. The first types of carbs are short-chain sugars, like glucose, sucrose, galactose, and fructose.

Chains of Glucose

Carbohydrates Story
  www.bakerpedia.com

The second type of carbohydrates is composed of long-chain glucose molecules. Unlike the simpler short-chain sugars, these molecules get broken down into glucose once they’ve reached the digestive tract. This glucose is transformed into energy by mixing with oxygen in cell mitochondria which creates heat and carbon dioxide.

Friendly Fiber

Carbohydrates Story

The final type of carb carbohydrate is fiber. This is a carb that we do not have the capacity to break down on our own. Thankfully, we have help. The 300- 500 different types of gut bacteria that live in our digestive tract have no problem breaking down fiber for fuel. High fiber foods are good for you though and are great sources of prebiotics: which help fuel gut bacteria.

Understanding Carbs

Carbohydrates Story
  www.philmaffetone.com

Now that we know the difference between the three types of carbohydrates, how do we tell which are good carbs and which are bad? First, we must remember that, contrary to the tenets of many strict carb-free diets, not all carbs are “bad.” As we’ve seen even from the above descriptions, some carbs are quite good for you.

The Good…

Carbohydrates Story
  www.consumerreports.org

The best carbohydrates and the very healthiest are those that are whole and completely unprocessed. Some examples of these very good carbs include sweet potatoes, bananas, potatoes, brown rice, yucca, legumes, buckwheat, and dates. Because they are unprocessed, the nutrients in each of these foods have remained intact and therefore nutritious.

Differing Effects

Carbohydrates Story
  www.parade.com

Healthy carbohydrates, that is those which are high in sugar and starch, affect the body differently than those that are heavily refined. Take, for example, purple sweet potatoes. These tubers are high in various unrefined, complex sugars and starches. They are also high in vitamins, minerals, and anthocyanins: antioxidants which help fight free radicals and may offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, or anti-cancer benefits.

The Bad

Carbohydrates Story
  www.onlinenewsbuzz.com

Now we come to the bad carbohydrates, the ones your mommy warned you about. These refined carbs are mostly bereft of fiber content; which means they are anything but complex. Processing and refinement have stripped these once-healthy carbs of many key vitamins, minerals, and healthsome fatty acids.

Refining Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates Story
  www.alibaba.com

Processed carbs can adversely affect blood sugar throughout the day, which in turn impacts our mental and physical performance and overall longevity. Some examples of refined carbs include fruit drinks, white flour, white rice, white pasta, and pastries. These bad carbs also impact insulin in the body much differently than unrefined carbs.

Blood Sugar and Memory

Carbohydrates Story
  www.well-beingsecrets.com

Doctors have discovered that the intake of bad carbs correlates directly with impaired glucose intolerance. This can lead to greater insulin concentrations circulating throughout the bloodstream, and caused an increased risk for type 2 diabetes and type 3 diabetes, which many people know by its other name: Alzheimer’s.

Heart Health

Carbohydrates Story
  www.scripps.edu

A fairly recent study about the effects of refined carbs on coronary heart disease revealed that bad carbs don’t just increase the risk of diabetes and cause obesity, they can also lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This may seem like an elementary conclusion to some of you, but it’s also more proof that some carbs are indeed bad and some good.

Too Much

Carbohydrates Story
  www.nhs.uk

So now we come to it. We know about good carbs and bad carbs, but what we don’t know is how much is too much when it comes to carbohydrates? Again, we must answer this question by restating that everyone’s body is different and reacts differently to carbs. Age, sex, body type, physical activity, and metabolism must all be taken into account.

Slim Pickins

Carbohydrates Story
  www.today.com

Doctors agree that for anyone in the general public looking to lose some weight, should consume a range of 100–150 grams of good carbs per day to keep up your energy levels. This means that diet-wise, good carbs should be roughly 15 percent to 30 percent of one’s total calories coming from healthy carbs.

Exceptions

Carbohydrates Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

Further information about your daily caloric intake indicates that 45 to 65 percent of total daily calories should come from carbohydrates. This is for a normal, healthy, non-diabetic person, but there are exceptions. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts, who are training intensely day-to-day, tend to require more carbs to help assist in recovery.

Precautions

Carbohydrates Story
  www.careeraddict.com

It’s also important to be aware that less carbs don’t always mean better health or performance. Going too low-carb or even no carb can actually negatively impact your mood, reduce cognitive performance, affect sleep quality, and cause hormone imbalances. It can even impact thyroid function and lead to unnecessary weight gain, fatigue, and brain fog.

Good Tasting, Good for You

Carbohydrates Story
  www.aktuality.sk

After all this, it’s safe to say that carbohydrates, in and of themselves, can be quite nourishing and beneficial for your health. And while it’s ok to indulge in the occasional Snickers bar or fruit juice, you’ll probably want to stick to good carbs like buckwheat, dates, sweet potatoes, bananas, and quinoa.

Final Thoughts

Carbohydrates Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

We all respond differently to carbohydrates consumption. Some people do indeed do well don’t following to fad diets like Atkins or Keto, but most people will do best by keeping to a diet of complex, nutrient-rich carbs. This will help balance you out, give you more energy, and ultimately help you live longer.

Tawanda Cason Story

When a complex issue arises, its initial cause is often one minor, easily reversible problem. Then, if ignored, that little mistake compounds with another, starting a snowball effect, and before you know it, the train is off the rails.

It’s not such a big deal when you’re talking about something inconsequential like burning a meal or losing at a board game. But when the stakes are high, just a couple of small mistakes can have devastating, lifelong effects.

Great Community

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Bartlett is a quiet suburban community in Tennessee. It’s one of those peaceful, safe neighborhoods parents dream of moving their family to to give their kids a good childhood. That was definitely one of the factors that Johnny Byrd and his wife took into account when they purchased a home there.

Safe At Night

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.teleteria.us

It was such a good neighborhood that, less than two weeks after moving into the neighborhood, Johnny felt comfortable letting his two children walk the family dog by themselves at 9:30 at night.

Unexpected Problem

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.greenishthumb.net

Johnny was right that he had nothing to worry about from his neighbors but things didn’t go quite as planned with the walk. “There were two raccoons in the side yard between our house and my neighbor’s house, and my dog was attacked,” Johnny said.

Defending The Homefront

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.tristatekennels.com

As the raccoons attacked their dog, the kids started screaming, alerting Johnny and his wife to the problem. After figuring out what was going on, the two parents armed themselves to protect their kids and the family dog…

Crazy Commotion

Tawanda Cason Story
  Dina Boyer / YouTube

Johnny Bryd grabbed a shovel and his wife grabbed a BB gun and a short battle ensued in the side yard, trying to get the raccoons safely away from the dog and out of the area. But with all the commotion and  the kid’s screaming, the Byrd family was making quite a scene.

Misinterpretation

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.abodo.com

One neighbor was alerted by the sounds and came to his window to see what he thought was a horrible sight. “He thought we were having a domestic violence issue, so he called the police and said there was a lady holding a gun on a man with a shovel,” Johnny said…

Serious Response

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.abc.net.au

Needless to say, a domestic disturbance involving a firearm can go very bad very quickly so after the dispatcher got the address where the incident was occurring, a number of squad cars rushed to the scene as quickly as possible to prevent the loss of life.

Unwitting Neighbor

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Across the street, a woman named Tawanda Cason was completely unaware of any of this going on. Her children were asleep and she herself was winding down for bed when all of a sudden, there was a jarring disturbance going on around her home…

Sudden Shock

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.nola.com

Tawanda’s peaceful evening had been shattered by the sounds of a dozen people shouting and banging on her windows and doors outside the home. “Somebody was hollering, ‘Open the front door!’ so I went to the front door, opened it and I saw all these flashlights and people outside my door,” she said.

Police! Open Up!

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.videoblocks.com

Those people turned out to be the police officers called to the scene for the domestic dispute that was supposedly happening across the street. Naturally, all of the banging and shouting had woken her children who came out of their rooms to see what on earth was happening…

What’s Going On?

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.georgianewsday.com

“I walked on the porch and immediately was handcuffed,” Tawanda said. The police were saying things to her about a domestic dispute and a handgun and, of course, she had no idea what they were talking about.

You’re Mistaken

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.littlethings.com

“I just kept telling [the officer she was speaking to] it’s the wrong house. It’s the wrong house,” she said. The officer replied “No, we confirmed.” Confirmed or not, there was clearly a mix up in the address they’d been given…

Spitting Image?

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

One clue that they didn’t have the right person was that Tawanda didn’t match the description the neighbor had given the 911 dispatcher at all. “This lady is 5-foot-3, African-American. She’s no match at all, nowhere near” Byrd said, comparing Tawanda to his considerably taller Caucasian wife.

Small Eternity

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.yeahwrite.org

Still, Tawanda spent what seemed like a confused eternity handcuffed on her front porch. Though the police tried to calm them down, her children were terrified by the initial commotion and with their mother still cuffed, must have thought that she was going to jail for doing something wrong that they didn’t understand…

Oops

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Eventually, through the their inspection of the house, Tawanda not matching the description of anyone involved in the incident, and her insistence that they had the wrong house, the police realized their mistake and the frightened mother was released from her handcuffs with an apology roughly 15 minutes after she’d opened her front door.

No Harm?

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Police were also able to determine which house belonged to Johnny and figured out that the whole thing had been a misunderstanding. No charges were pressed so technically, everything turned out “all right.” But there was still the matter of the ordeal that Tawanda and her family went through…

Ridiculous

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

“Traumatizing her family for no reason even over something that wasn’t real seems ridiculous,’ Johnny said. Tawanda shared his sentiment, wondering why there was any confusion at all once the police saw her face. “If you’re searching for a white female, I’m clearly not her,” she said.

Lasting Effects

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Though there was no legal action as a result of the mistaken call, there would still be lasting effects for Tawanda and her children. Being awoken in the night by the shouting and pounding of armed policeman can be a traumatizing event for a young person, especially when they throw cuffs on your mother…

Unfixable

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

Though the police apologized, Tawanda thought it wasn’t enough to make right what happened. But she won’t be pursuing a lawsuit or anything like that not only because it had been an honest mistake but because, frankly, she believed it wouldn’t help anything.

Perhaps A Silver Lining

Tawanda Cason Story
  www.wreg.com

“There’s nothing they can do really because it’s always going to be with me and my children,” Tawanda said. Hopefully, some good can come out of things and the neighbors involved can become closer after the incident.

Cathy Cuni Story

Remy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been a loyal and loving pet to a family in New Jersey for the past eight years. Her owners describe her as a “love bug” who showers the family with cuddles and kisses and is nothing but friendly to visitors of the home.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

Resembling Lady from “Lady and the Tramp,” Remy is a beautiful dog with floppy ears and big brown eyes. Besides an occasional cough, Remy was a healthy and happy dog. The family was due to take Remy on her routine checkup, even though they believed her cough was nothing to worry about.

Routine Doctor’s Appointment

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.heartoftexasvets.com

But Cathy and John Cunis, Remy’s owners, began to feel uneasy as the veterinarian examined Remy at their recent appointment in September. They had every reason to feel this way when the veterinarian lingered with her stethoscope against Remy’s chest.

Heart Murmur

Cathy Cuni Story
  streathamhillvets1 / YouTube

While it only seemed like Remy had a minor cough, the doctors visit revealed that she had a severely enlarged heart. Her diagnosis was end-stage Mitral Valve Disease. Cathy was speechless, but partly because she had no idea what this disease meant for Remy, the love of her life…

Heart Failure Common In Small Dogs

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

Sometimes known as Leaky Valve Disease, Mitral Valve Disease is a form of degenerative heart failure. It can be described as common, especially among small dog breeds, usually under the age of eight, according to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Unnerving Fate

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MVD and while medication might alleviate some symptoms, Remy would likely die within six months to a year. As Cathy tried to process this heartbreaking news, the veterinarian offered one more piece of information…

Last Resort

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

“The doctor turned her back to me and said, ‘Before you ask, there’s only one person in the world who can help her, and he’s in Japan,” Cathy told the Asbury Park Press. Without even hesitating, Cathy knew that soon, along with her husband, John, the family would be heading to Yokohama, Japan.

They’d Do Anything For Remi

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

There was no distance too far to help save their dog’s life and they knew the cost would likely be high. Most people in her situation would have wrestled with many scenarios, but there was nothing she wouldn’t do for Remy…

Their Pets Are Their Kids

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

“My husband and I don’t have kids, Cathy said. “So my animals are my kids.” Photographs of Remy and other pets line the walls of the staircase in their home. The family also has three other dogs, rescued and adopted through her veterinarian’s office.

Other Dogs

Nero and Silvio are Blue Roan English Cocker Spaniels who were bred for show but they were born with cosmetic defects. Then there’s Ruby, a Golden Cocker Spaniel, who was a former stray, adopted through Abandoned Angels NYC. The Cunis purchased Remy as a puppy from a Long Island-based breeder in 2010…

The Entire Family

In the living room, three bunnies reside. Siblings Pearl, Sonny, and their newest addition, Ollie, were all adopted from Voorhees Animal Shelter. The entire family gets along really well and the other pets were able to sense when Remy wasn’t feeling well.

Mitral Valve Disease

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.gofundme.com

Cathy began researching Mitral Valve Disease immediately and also the surgeon in Japan. She learned that Dr. Masami Uechi has devoted his entire professional life to this one disease. Using a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, Dr. Uechi and his team have performed more than 400 mitral valve repair surgeries. This was a relief for the Cunis…

Improving Remy’s Quality Of Life

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

While the procedure doesn’t cure MVD, it can slow the progression of the disease and can greatly improve the dog’s quality of life. If Remy met the eligibility criteria, her chance of success with this operation would be 95%. This meant that she would be able to die peacefully of old age before MVD would have the chance to weaken her again.

High Costs

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.nationsonline.org

As far as where the Cunis would need to travel to have this life-saving operation, it would have to be Japan. Dr. Uechi also performs the surgery in Versailles, France, but the cost there is much higher due since he brings his team with him. Surgery in Japan costs $17,000 while in France, the price is $46,000…

Pre-Surgery Testing

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.saidaonline.com

For some, this might seem like a lot to pay for a pet, but not for the Cunis. They were prepared to take off time from work and tap into their 401-K. Japan also requires rabies vaccines within a prescribed period, followed by a six-month quarantine. This meant pre-surgery testing would cost the Cunis about $3,000.

There Was No Time To Lose

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

They agreed to pay it and began the process immediately. “Her cough was deepening and she had zero energy,” Cuni said. “She would stand like a bulldog because she didn’t want to put pressure on her chest. Her heart had enlarged more and it was pushing on her trachea. She was running out of time.” As Remy’s quarantine came to an end, the Cunis planned to fly to Japan on May 28, with Remy’s surgery scheduled for June 5…

Surgery In Japan

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.videoblocks.com

After a long flight from New Jersey to Japan, the Cunis wanted to cry when they finally met Dr. Uechi face to face. “He was such a humble man,” Cathy said. Remy’s surgery was at Jasmine Veterinary Cardiovascular Medical Center in Yokohama, where the Cunis were able to view the operating room and even see a projection of Remy’s heart on a screen.

The Surgery

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.ualberta.ca

Remy was under the care of 11 people in the operating room and she came through after seven hours of surgery. After the procedure, the family spent 30 days in Japan while Remy recovered. John Cuni, an electrician in New York, had to take off of work, and when the couple returned home, it was already July…

Remy Is Doing Great

Cathy Cuni Story
  www.app.com

But the large expense and time away from their home and work were worth it. By Remy’s one-month post-op cardiology visit in New Jersey, her heart had decreased in size, and all the other minor complications that cropped up during the recovery period had subsided. Remy’s energy also returned in full force.

The Future

Cathy Cuni Story
  newyork.cbslocal.com

After the experience, John told his wife that there will be “absolutely no more animals.” This is partly due to the stress and money spent on their beloved dog, but besides that, their house is already full of love. Hopefully, Remy can live out the rest of her life in happiness and free of pain. The life expectancy of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is anywhere from 9 to 14 years.

ABC News Correspondent’s DNA Test Unlocks Bombshell Family Revelation

Whit Johnson Story

Most people take DNAs test to discover what their ethnic origins are, to construct family trees, or to learn about a potential distant relative. However, the most interesting thing about DNA records is that they often provide more information than originally expected.

Even after you take the test, your results are updated when other relatives submit their DNA, a process that can continue for many years. When one journalist took a DNA test to learn more about his background, it never occurred to him what he would actually unearth. He wound up unlocking a family bombshell “completely by accident.”

Suggested Taking A DNA Test

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnewspr.tumblr.com

When Whit’s mother suggested he take a DNA test, it was simply for him to learn more about his ethnic, regional and national background. Whit’s dad was adopted in 1950 in Salt Lake City, so they knew nothing about his biological family.

Having Reservations

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Whit was always curious who his dad’s biological family was, but his dad never wanted to know. Being that his father’s adoptive parents were so important to him, he couldn’t take the risk of offending them in any way, so he never pursued looking…

Curiosity Kicked In

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Whit Johnson, a Journalist, explained to ABC News that when his parents divorced years ago, his mother’s curiosity about learning his background grew. While sitting around the kitchen table with his wife and mother, his mother revealed that she bought him a DNA test.

23andME

Whit Johnson Story
  www.nbcnews.com

Purchased from 23andMe, Whit was reluctant to take it until both his wife and mother convinced him of why he should. “My mom literally walked out with the test tube and said, ‘All you have to do is spit in this. We’ll fill out the online profile together, and then you wait for the results.’” It was an offer he couldn’t refuse…

Spit Test

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

He describes taking the spit test right then and there and afterward, his mom filled out his profile details. Whit went home and forgot all about it until he received the results one month later. Whit figured that the most he would learn is which variation of British/Irish/Scottish he was.

Reviewing His Profile

Whit Johnson Story
  www.thenextweb.com

Being completely unfamiliar with the process, an email to Whit from 23andMe read, “We have your results.” Then, he simply clicked the email and reviewed his profile and discovered some interesting things. They were facts pertaining to his background and ethnicity…

Learning His Background

Whit Johnson Story
  www.huffingtonpost.com

Most of what he viewed were things he already knew since his mother previously submitted her own DNA to the site. He saw how his background was mainly from Western Europe, but the results showed that he was Basque Spanish, with a small percentage of Native American.

His Dad’s Family

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Whit figured this must be where his dad’s side of the family originated from but thought nothing more of it. That was, until, he found a tab on the website that said, “Your DNA Relatives.” Of course, he had to click it, and when he did, a bunch of distant relatives popped up, including third, fourth and fifth cousins. Then, he opened another section that read, “Your Immediate Family.”

DNA Relatives

Whit Johnson Story
  www.searchenginejournal.com

That’s when Whit lost it. “I clicked on that, assuming I would only find my mother because she put her profile in, and a warning pops up on the website that said, “Warning: You may not know everything that is in here,” he said. It basically was a warning that he may see something that he wasn’t prepared to see.

A Striking Similarity

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

However, Whit wasn’t afraid and as he clicked on a photo of a potential first cousin, he was blown away. “I didn’t even look at the name. The picture blew my mind. My jaw dropped. I fell back into my chair, and I had to turn away from the computer for a moment and just think about this for a second because I saw a picture of a man who looks exactly like my dad,” he explained.

Discovering His Dad’s Brother

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

This man turned out to be his dad’s brother. Whit started thinking how he would even contact this person or talk to his dad about this. “How do I figure out the story?” Whit wondered. Little did he know that the same time he made this discovery, his father decided he wanted to learn about his biological mother and he started doing his own research online and taking DNA tests and family trees.

Telling His Dad

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

But, despite his efforts, his dad didn’t find anything. Whit thought about how he could approach this conversation with his father so he called his mom and wife for help. He decided to write an email to his stepmother, who happened to be with his dad that day. Whit wrote that he may have found someone “Very related” to his dad…

Connecting With His Uncle

Whit Johnson Story
  WhitJohnson / Twitter

His stepmom replied, “Oh my God. Yes, dad wants to know. We’ll call you later.” In the meantime, Whit reached out to the man resembling his father on the website and he received a message back. The man wrote, “Huh, I’ve been exploring all these DNA websites for years and never saw a relative this close. Tell me your story.”

It All Happened So Fast

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Whit wrote back explaining his dad’s background and saying that he was looking at their genetic markers. Then, the man named Bear, responds and says, “I think I’m your dad’s brother.” After they went back and forth in messages, Whit’s father calls and asks, “Whit, what’s going on?”

An Emotional Day

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Since this discovery happened just a few hours ago, everyone was emotional. His dad was in tears, and by the end of the day, the two brothers were exchanging emails. They decided they were going to meet in Utah, where Bear lived. It turned out that Bear even remembered watching Whit on TV many years ago.

Funny Coincidence

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

“My dad’s brother lives in Utah, where I actually worked as a reporter several years back and learned that, for years, my uncle watched me on TV as an anchor and reporter in Salt Lake City, having no idea that I was his nephew.” At their first meeting, Bear and Whit’s dad started hugging as if they had known each other for years…

They Bonded Immediately

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Bear said, “It’s crazy, it’s like looking in the mirror. How are you brother?” Soon, the newly discovered brothers started looking at other legal records and documents and they found that they had another brother. Now, there were three brothers and they could tell by the genetic profiles that there were three fathers but the same mother.

The Three Brothers

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

They decided to set up another meeting with all the brothers. The oldest brother, “Uncle Jerry,” who lives in Wyoming, drove down from Wyoming to Salt Lake City, and everyone met in a hotel there. With a smile across his face, Jerry said to his brothers, “It’s overwhelming…You guys look familiar.” Jerry even brought a bunch a photographs to talk about the background of the family…

Learning His Mother’s Name

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Whit’s dad wound up learning his mother’s name and he even saw a picture of her. “With every step in the process, it was like a new wave of emotions,” Whit said. It meant so much to his father, as for years, he was reluctant to go on this journey.

The Future

Whit Johnson Story
  abcnews.go.com

Despite knowing that there are at least three fathers in the mix, the family hasn’t yet been able to connect them through public records. Whit says, “Walking through this process with my dad has been a great life gift for the both of us. And there are many more twists and turns and mysteries and secrets to unlock still ahead. Who knows where it goes from here.”

Important Facts Not Everyone Knows About Diabetes

0

Diabetes Story

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder — technically, a group of metabolic disorders — where a person has trouble producing or responding to the hormone insulin, which leads to abnormal processing of carbohydrates and high levels of glucose in the blood and urine.

It’s one of the most common disorders, affecting about 415 million people around the world — roughly 8.5 percent of the population. But even though it’s so common, there are a lot of things about diabetes that many people don’t know.

Three Varieties

Diabetes Story
  www.npr.org

There are actually three different kinds of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Although they all come with similar problems related to lack of insulin, all three have different causes and require different things to manage them.

‘Juvenile’ Diabetes

Diabetes Story
  www.skepticalraptor.com

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where, for reasons we don’t yet understand, the body’s immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin. Because insulin is a key hormone to get the glucose from your food into your brain, muscles, and organs, people with type 1 diabetes must have their insulin replaced to survive…

Not Quite Accurate

Diabetes Story
  www.pblcoc.org

Type 1 diabetes is called juvenile diabetes because it can show up even in infant. However, that name is somewhat misleading. While it s typically diagnosed in people under 40, type 1 diabetes can occur at any age.

The More Common Type

Diabetes Story
  www.irishtimes.com

In total, type 1 diabetes accounts for less than 10% of all cases. Nearly all of the rest of the people with diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes. For those people, the pancreas still makes insulin but the amount it makes is significantly reduced…

Greater Understanding

Diabetes Story
  adventistvegetariandiabetics.wordpress.com

The insulin in people with type 2 diabetes is also less effective because the person develops an insulin resistance. Compared to type 1 diabetes, we have a much better understanding of what factors add to a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes.

Risk Factors

Diabetes Story
  www.sciencenews.org

While there is a strong genetic component to it, the risk of type 2 diabetes is significantly increased through lifestyle factors. Having high blood pressure, being overweight or obese, not getting enough exercise, eating an unhealthy diet, and having an “apple shape” body type all increase a person’s risk…

Mothers Only

Diabetes Story
  www.dlife.com

Gestational diabetes is the third type and as the name implies, it is related to pregnancy. The hormonal changes that occur when carrying a baby can lead to a buildup of glucose in the blood. When your body can’t produce enough insulin to keep up with the elevated blood sugar levels, it can cause gestational diabetes.

Temporary Condition

Diabetes Story
  www.healthline.com

It affects around 6% of pregnant women and, if they properly manage their blood sugar levels, doesn’t adversely affect the health of their baby. Gestational diabetes fortunately goes away once the child is born most of the time. Unfortunately, it does increase the risk that the mother will later develop type 2 diabetes…

Unrelenting

Diabetes Story
  www.diabete-ezy.com

With type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the effect on the life of an impacted person is unending. It can mean checking blood sugar levels several times a day, counting carbohydrates in every meal, taking various injections and medications, or having to wear an insulin pump. If blood sugar is not properly maintained, a person with diabetes risks blindness, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack and nerve damage.

Shifting Patterns

Diabetes Story
  www.rd.com

An it’s not easy maintaining proper levels either. Blood glucose levels can be unpredictable, since they are affected by exercise, stress, food, and hormones for a diabetic person. It adds an extra layer of stress into the person’s life on top of whatever else they may be dealing with…

Real Impact

Diabetes Story
  www.medicalxpress.com

That stress has a tangible impact on the lives of people suffering with diabetes, so much so that they are more likely than the rest of the population to suffer from depression. Some studies have shown that risk to be twice as high.

Burn Out

Diabetes Story
  www.diabeticconnect.com

There is also a condition known as “diabetes burn out.” Essentially, a person with diabetes may find themselves suffering from exhaustion and extreme apathy toward their own self-care. The person has great difficulty finding the motivation to strictly stick to doing their blood glucose checks, medications, exercise, and insulin injections…

Frustration And Distress

Diabetes Story
  www.ecorazzi.com

Burn out happens most often for people who work very hard at managing their diabetes only to be frustrated that their results aren’t as good as planned. The burn out can lead to more guilt, self-hatred, and stress, which can demotivate the individual further, creating a vicious cycle.

Life Events

Diabetes Story

Burn out often pops up when other difficulties are happening in life, such as during times of major transition, family or relationship troubles, the loss of a loved one, substance abuse problems, or any other circumstance that causes elevated stress. If you or a loved one suffers from diabetes, it’s good to remain on the lookout during such times…

Finding The Path

Diabetes Story

20 Common Signs That You Might Be Suffering From Narcissism

Narcissist Story

Many people believe this to be the age of entitlement and think that those of the Millennial generation are among the greatest culprits. Those people believe that Millennials are narcissists, who believe themselves infallible and deserving of the utmost respect, regardless of any mistakes they’ve made.

Yet, narcissism has very little to do with what decade you were raised in and everything to do with a real and serious mental illness. Though it may not sound like your average mental illness, narcissism is among the most common mental dysfunctions out there today. Here are 20 signs that someone you know may be an actual narcissist.

Swear It

Narcissist Story
  www.abc.net.au

Apparently, those who possess narcissistic tendencies are fond of using vulgar language. A recent study conducted by the Washington University in St. Louis found that subjects with narcissism were more argumentative than the other participants. The narcissistic subjects also used fouler language in general than everyone else, and tended to utilize more sexually explicit language.

Tool Of The Self-Righteous

Narcissist Story
  www.livingwaterchristiancounseling.org

Narcissists don’t generally possess a great deal of self-awareness, but what they do have in abundance is self-righteousness. They often believe that their views are inherently superior to those of other people and bask in the attention they receive for holding those views. Those narcissists who are also religious might even cloak this self-righteousness in an inflated sense of spiritual connection.

Mean People

Narcissist Story
  www.lizgross.net

Though they know deep down that vengeful or antisocial behavior isn’t socially acceptable, most narcissists simply disregard those feelings. In their minds, they are justified in being mean to those who’ve wronged them, and often take offense at the words or actions of others even when they aren’t meant to be offensive.

Leadership Skills

Narcissist Story
  www.betterthansuccess.com

Despite the often antisocial tendencies of those with narcissism, many narcissists actually seem to gravitate towards leadership positions. This is mostly attributed to the fact that they possess an uncanny ability to dominate others with their personality. Putting themselves into leadership positions also serves to fulfill their need for constant positive reinforcement.

Entertainers

Narcissist Story
  culturebox.francetvinfo.fr

If Kanye West is any indication, it appears that haughty and supercilious as they appear, narcissists are pretty darn entertaining. Narcissists possess an air of self-confidence that others do not. That, mixed with talent and a desire to be seen and respected, can make them very effective entertainers.

Those Pesky Emotions

Narcissist Story
  www.rewireme.com

Narcissists are not to be confused with psychopaths. They possess emotions like you or me, they just hate having to feel them. Narcissists believe that emotions like rage or sadness challenge their sense of perfect autonomy. The idea that something outside themselves can affect them is something they cannot abide and would never choose to discuss.

Bad Sport, Old Sport

Narcissist Story
  www.mandatory.com

Unsurprisingly, many narcissists also happen to be bullies. Not in the traditional sense, mind you, but specifically when it comes to competition. Some narcissists are either sore losers or even sore winners. They react poorly to being chastised by referees and if they win, might gloat a bit more excessively than your average person.

Under Appreciated

Narcissist Story
  www.globaltake.com

It seems like many narcissists feel they are underappreciated by the world at large. You’d think that given their ego and the way they appreciate themselves, they’d have enough self-confidence already. That isn’t the case though. Narcissists feel they are entitled to receive the recognition and respect of others.

Cheaters

Narcissist Story
  www.attracttheone.com

If you’ve ever had the misfortune of dating a narcissist, then you already know that many of them tend to be unfaithful in relationships. As if this weren’t enough, studies have also determined that narcissists are more likely to cheat once they think their partners are committed in the relationship.

Dumped

Narcissist Story
  www.sheknows.com

Whether it’s the cheating or some of their more unpleasant personality traits, people who date narcissists generally tend to break off the relationship after about four months. Studies have shown that this four-month mark, typically the satisfaction peak in any relationship, is about the time the dater finally sees their narcissistic partner’s true colors.

Always in Control

Narcissist Story
  www.rastavapors.com

Narcissists don’t just like to remain emotionally in control, they also can’t stand to be at the mercy of other people’s feelings or even their preferences. Kowtowing to other people’s desires or plans reminds them that they aren’t as independent or in control of the world as their narcissistic delusions make them think they are.

Late Arrivals

Narcissist Story
  www.ticketsnipers.com

It is precisely because of their desire to not go along with the plans of others that many narcissists seem to be late to everything. This chronic lateness or even calling at the last minute to change plans, allows the narcissist to take back control of a situation, surreptitiously undermine the desires of others, and maintain their much-needed sense of autonomy over the world.

Ignored and Adored

Narcissist Story
  www.freud.org.uk

According to the renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, it is the combination of parental rejection and excessive admiration which ultimately makes a narcissist. In fact, it is this inconsistency of attitude and regard towards children that makes them crave admiration from everyone else in their adult lives. They need that constant ego-boost to keep them going.

Choosy Companions

Narcissist Story
  www.zinggadget.com

This one represents a difference between female narcissists and male ones. Women with narcissism tend to choose male friends with high social status so they can feel a sense of worthiness. Whereas as narcissistic men go for “bro” types who can act as “wingman” for them when they’re trying to pick up girls.

Bad Listeners

Narcissist Story
  www.lovepanky.com

Most narcissists don’t really listen when others speak. Instead, they tend to politely wait, taking in nothing of what the other speaker has said until it is their turn to speak. When they finally do speak, they also tend to steer the conversation towards themselves and make exaggerated hand movements or talk loudly to draw the attention of everyone in the vicinity.

Heartless Romantics

Narcissist Story
  www.pexels.com

It may seem strange, but many narcissists actually love romance. They fall in and out of love very quickly and very easily. Like much of what they believe about themselves, this is merely a delusion. Even if they think their partner is a perfect complement to their own perfection at the onset, they soon realize that even their great love has flaws, and quickly fall out of love.

Perfection on a Pedestal

Narcissist Story
  www.stillharbor.org

Most Narcissists possess a flawed sense of logic and this extends to how they view other people as well. Whether it is a successful work colleague or a crush, narcissists will often put these people on pedestals, thinking they too will become perfect by association. As soon as they see that person isn’t as impeccable as they believed though, they sever ties.

Moving On

Narcissist Story
  www.under30ceo.com

Narcissistic people often put others down in order to reaffirm their own internal sense of superiority. This, of course, makes it hard for most narcissists to keep friends for a long time. There is only so much most people can take, after all. Thus, narcissists are constantly on the search for new friends to lord over and mock to make themselves feel more important.

Anxious Introverts?

Narcissist Story
  www.hercampus.com

It may sound strange but not all narcissists are the grandiose jerkwads we imagine them to be. Quite the contrary in fact. You see, many narcissists can actually be quite introverted. They can be hypersensitive, defensive, and even anxious in their dealings with others. This is because in their minds, dealing with others only serves to disprove the illusion in their mind that they’re the best.

Everyone’s a Dolt

Narcissist Story
  www.smokeynews.com

If one of your friends is a one-upping, supercilious, know-it-all, they may be a narcissist. Though not all narcissists are know-it-alls, many of them tend towards a “my way or the highway” approach to speaking with others. They refuse to believe that anyone else can compare with them, either mentally or physically.

Why Excess Vitamin D Can Be Too Much Of A Good Thing

Vitamin-D Story

In recent years, research into Vitamin D has shown just how important it is for our health. It has found that having low Vitamin D levels are associated with a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, mood disorders, dementia, and other diseases.

People have taken note and the vitamin is having its moment in the sun, so to speak. Vitamin D supplements and screening tests have become far more popular but, with them has come the rise of something else: too much of a good thing.

Sunshine Vitamin

Vitamin-D Story
  www.proceilingtiles.com

Vitamin D has been called the sunshine vitamin because your body has the ability to produce it internally after exposure to the sun. Produced in the kidneys, it enters the bloodstream where it has long been known to help the body absorb calcium and phosphorous, helping to build strong bones.

Bone Health

Vitamin-D Story
  news.usc.edu

If a person doesn’t have enough vitamin D, their bones can become thin, brittle or misshapen. Deficiency can cause rickets for children, and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults, especially the elderly…

Wanting To Do Right

Vitamin-D Story
  www.healthline.com

It’s no surprise then that people who want to maintain good bone health look toward vitamin D supplements in addition to taking calcium. But those people should know that the science is still out on whether or not supplementation helps.

Mixed Research

Vitamin-D Story
  news.harvard.edu

“Research on Vitamin D and calcium supplementation has been mixed and, especially when it comes to randomized clinical trials, has been generally disappointing to date,” says Dr. JoAnne Manson of Harvard Medical School…

Correlation Is Not Causation

Vitamin-D Story
  www.betterhealthwhileaging.net

While some studies have found an association between low levels of vitamin D and various diseases, Dr. Manson said, it hasn’t been conclusively shown that the low vitamin D levels actually cause those diseases.

Common Root?

Vitamin-D Story
  www.foodheavenmadeeasy.com

A person with a serious illness may have a vitamin D deficiency but that may be because they spend little time outdoors getting physical activity or because of a poor diet. Both of those things could be the cause of many diseases and of a vitamin D deficiency at the same time…

Other Reasons

Vitamin-D Story
  blog.lifestyleplus.net

Many diseases cause inflammation, which can reduce levels of vitamin D in the blood. Obesity, which has links to a number of diseases, can also reduce blood levels because your body stores vitamin D in fat tissue, meaning less shows up in blood tests.

Supplementing

Vitamin-D Story
  Diplomatic Courier / YouTube

“Thus, a low vitamin D level may be a marker for other conditions, but not necessarily a direct cause of disease,’ Dr. Manson said. Still, people continue to take vitamin D supplements in hopes of preventing or helping in treating of a number of diseases. And though the research is not conclusive, there are signs that point toward supplementation being helpful, so long as it’s done in the right amounts…

Enough Is Enough

Vitamin-D Story
  www.digitalmarketingskill.com

But some people seem to be overdoing it. In a national survey that gathered data between 1999 and 2014, researchers found a nearly 3% increase in people taking more than 4,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day — a potentially unsafe amount. There was also a nearly 18% increase in the number of people taking over 1,000 IU, which is still beyond the recommended dose of 600-800 recommended by doctors.

All Things In Moderation

Vitamin-D Story
  www.rd.com

“More is not necessarily better,” said Dr. Manson. “In fact, more can be worse.” One study showed that intake of very high doses of vitamin D in older women was associated with more falls and fractures…

Rare Toxicity

Vitamin-D Story
  telemedicina.med.muni.cz

And in rare cases, taking a supplement with too much vitamin D can be toxic. That leads to hypercalcemia, a condition where calcium builds up in the blood to excessive amounts, which can lead to deposits in the arteries or soft tissues. For women, it may also predispose them to kidney stones.

Simple Rules

Vitamin-D Story
  www.freepik.com

Thankfully, there are a few simple guidelines you can follow to ensure that you get a good amount of vitamin D in your system. First, keep track of the amount of vitamin D put into whatever supplements you take. For most people 600 to 800 IU is an adequate amount to take…

Different For Some

Vitamin-D Story
  www.homegymr.com

There are some people who require a higher dosage, including those with bone health disorders or conditions that interfere with the absorption of vitamin D or calcium. For those people especially, it’s important to follow the second guideline.

Talk To Your Doctor

Vitamin-D Story
  www.livewellmagazine.org

And that’s to follow your doctor’s recommendations and make sure your doctor knows if you are supplementing your diet with vitamin D or anything else. “Many people are taking high-dose supplements on their own and their doctors may not even be aware of it,” said Dr. Manson…

Finding The Right Amount

Vitamin-D Story
  www.zmescience.com

Work with your doctor to figure out if supplement use is right for you and, if so, which supplements you should be taking. After talking with a health professional, many people find that they don’t even need supplementation so long as they’re getting the right levels of vitamin D from their diet.

Eating Well

Vitamin-D Story
  www.fightcancerglobal.com

The last guideline is, if possible, to get your vitamin D from food, rather than from pills. Though it’s not found in most foods, salmon, tuna, sun-dried mushrooms, and eggs are all good sources. You can also find products like milk or orange juice that has been specially fortified with vitamin D at any grocery store…

Location, Location, Location

Vitamin-D Story
  www.salempediatricclinic.com

There are a few different factors that may put you at risk of having low vitamin D and probably the most unexpected one is where you live. People living above 37 degrees in the northern hemisphere and below 37 degrees in the southern hemisphere are at a greater risk for deficiency because you may not be getting enough sun to produce sufficient vitamin D during winter months.

Other Risk Factors

Vitamin-D Story
  www.skincare.net

Your ability to produce vitamin D also decrease with age. People over the age of 65 produce just a quarter of what they did when they were in their 20s. People with darker skin also typically have lower levels of vitamin D than lighter-skinned people. Americans of African descent, for example, have roughly half the vitamin D in their blood than Americans of European descent…

Testing

Vitamin-D Story
  www.plodnosc.pl

If you suspect that you have a vitamin D deficiency, there’s a surefire way to be sure. A simple blood test can easily show you. However, like vitamin D supplements, vitamin D tests have proven to be overused in recent years.

Probably OK

Vitamin-D Story
  news.harvard.edu

“Vitamin D testing is one of the top Medicare lab tests performed in the United States in recent years,” said Dr. Manson. “This is really surprising for a test that is recommended for only a small subset of the population.” While you should definitely speak with your doctor, you should know that if your diet is good and you don’t suffer from any diseases or disorders, you should be fine.

Why Potassium Is One Of The Most Important Chemicals In The Human Body

0

Potassium Story

Everybody knows that it’s important to get a good amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet. While there are more than two dozen important vitamins and minerals you should consume daily, certain ones, like vitamins C, D, and calcium tend to get the most attention.

But there is one overshadowed mineral — potassium — that is just as important as these, if not more so. The health benefits associated with a potassium-rich diet are so numerous and powerful. It’s definitely worth giving it a bit of time in the spotlight.

Electrolytes

Potassium Story
  www.bloodtestslondon.com

Potassium is classified as an electrolyte, which means that when it is dissolved in water, it produces positively charged ions. That property allows it to conduct electricity, which makes it vital for many processes throughout the body, the first of which is regulating fluid.

In And Out

Potassium Story
  Pinterest

As you probably know, the body is mostly made up of water. Water within the body travels between two major fluid compartments. These fluid compartments are the Intercellular (IFC) and Extracellular (EFC) compartments — comprising 40 percent and 20 percent of the body’s total weight, respectively.

Osmolality

Potassium Story
  www.rd.com

The amount of water in the ICF and EFC is balanced by their concentration of respective electrolytes. Potassium is the primary electrolyte in the IFC, whereas sodium is the primary electrolyte in the ECF. The body changes its levels of these electrolytes within the cells, ensuring the water in the body is where it needs to be, through a process called osmolality.

Impulse Control

Potassium Story
  www.verywellhealth.com

Potassium is also important for the functioning of the nervous system. The nervous system relays messages between the brain and body in the form of nerve impulses. These impulses are electrical signals that control muscle contractions, heartbeat, reflexes, and many other body functions.

Voltage Control

Potassium Story
  www.healthline.com

The body generates nerve impulses by moving sodium ions into cells and potassium ions out of cells, which changes the voltage of the cell. When a person doesn’t have enough potassium in their blood, it affects the body’s ability to generate those nerve impulses.

Muscle Power

Potassium Story
  training.seer.cancer.gov

About 80 percent of the potassium in your body is found inside the cells of your muscles, including the heart. Inside those cells, potassium ions, magnesium ions, and calcium ions all work together in a complicated process to cause all muscle contractions and relaxation.

Heart Health

Potassium Story
  www.template.net

Potassium is very important in maintaining a regular heartbeat. When potassium levels in the blood are too high, the heart can become dilated, it’s contractions can weaken, and the heartbeat can become abnormal. Having potassium levels that are too low, on the other hand, can cause heart palpitations.

Serious Complications

Potassium Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

When the heart doesn’t beat properly, it doesn’t effectively pump blood to the brain, organs, and muscles, causing any number of problems. In the most extreme cases, a potassium imbalance can lead to sudden death.

Small Concern

Potassium Story
  www.livestrong.com

You probably don’t have to worry about having too much potassium in your system. It typically occurs only when a person takes too many potassium supplements or if a person has trouble removing the mineral through urination.

Other Medical Problems

Potassium Story
  library.open.oregonstate.edu

The latter issue usually occurs when a person has poor kidney function or chronic kidney disease. For healthy adults, medical science suggests it’s very difficult to get too much potassium from foods.

Significant Benefits

Potassium Story
  www.organicfacts.net

If your diet is rich in potassium, the health benefits that result are quite impressive. It can be a big help with high blood pressure, a problem that affects a third of Americans. Numerous studies have shown that a potassium-rich diet can significantly reduce high blood pressure.

Guarding Against Stroke

Potassium Story
  Seeker / YouTube

It can also help protect against a stroke. A stroke happens when there is a lack of blood flow to the brain, which causes terrible symptoms and kills 130,000 Americans each year. Numerous studies have shown that those who eat potassium-rich diets reduce their risk of stroke by more than 20 percent.

Osteoporosis

Potassium Story
  www.odtmag.com

It helps prevent osteoporosis as well. Osteoporosis, a condition where bones become hollow and porous, is linked to low levels of calcium. A potassium-rich diet helps prevent it by reducing how much calcium is lost through urine.

Calcium Regulation

Potassium Story
  www.healthline.com

By helping to regulate the amount of calcium found in the urine, a potassium-rich diet also helps reduce the risk of kidney stones. The clumps of material, commonly calcium, that build up in the kidney and can cause excruciating pain. That risk is reduced by about 50 percent for men and 35 percent for women, who consume the most potassium daily.

Water Retention Problems

Potassium Story
  www.prevention.com

Consuming more potassium may also be the solution for people who have problems with water retention. A high potassium intake fights water retention by increasing urine production while at the same time reducing sodium levels.

Optimal Intake

Potassium Story
  www.potatopro.com

In order to receive all of these benefits, most health authorities agree that getting 3,500 to 4,700 milligrams of potassium each day seems to be the optimal amount. Thankfully, incorporating more potassium-rich foods in your diet can be easy and delicious.

Eating Clean

Potassium Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

Generally speaking, all you need to do to get more potassium in your diet is eat more fruits and vegetables. Popular fruits that contain plenty of potassium include bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, and avocado. Some dried fruits like prunes, raisins, and dates are good sources as well.

Leafy Greens

Potassium Story
  www.yummyspoonfuls.com

If you’re more of a fan of leafy greens, you have plenty of options, too. Cooked spinach, raw kale, and the various kinds of chard are all good sources of potassium. But the most potassium-rich leafy greens are cooked beet greens, which actually have the highest concentration of potassium of any food.

Other Options

Potassium Story
  www.onceuponachef.com

If you want something more substantial, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and yams are potassium rich, as are pinto beans, peas, and portobello mushrooms. The one meat standout in terms of potassium content, is salmon.

Talk To Your Doctor

Potassium Story
  www.themix.org.uk

For most people, changing up their diet is a better option for increasing potassium intake compared to taking an over-the-counter supplement, though your doctor may prescribe a supplement if you suffer from a deficiency. While it never hurts to add a few more fruits and veggies to your diet, you should consult your doctor about any major changes in what you eat or if you want to take a supplement.

Why You Need To Pay Attention To Sciatic Nerve Health

Sciatic Nerve Story

No one wants to have to deal with a pain in the neck, a pain in the back, or a pain in the … well, you get the idea. The point is, no one likes to have something get on their nerves — and if you have sciatica, you’ve got just about one of the worst, most persistent nerve pains out there.

Thankfully, sciatic nerve pain, while mostly chronic, can be properly managed. The first step in doing so, however, is to learn all there is to know about this pesky and little-known nerve condition.

The Nerve Of The Nerve

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.2relievebackpain.org

Many people, including those who suffer at it’s nervy-mercy, don’t know that the sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It runs from each side of the lower spine, into your buttock, around the back of the thigh, and into the foot. And of course, it hooks back up with the brain, which is usually where the trouble begins.

Big Ol’ Nerve

Sciatic Nerve Story
  simple.wikipedia.org

At its largest point, the sciatic nerve is as big around as a man’s thumb. As nerve’s go, that’s pretty darn big. It is this prodigious girth that makes it such a problem when it gets irritated. Think about how badly your thumb can hurt when you bruise it, now imagine that attached to your spine.

Five Nerves

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.auspicesafety.com

The previous slide was a tad bit misleading, as the thumb-sized sciatic nerve isn’t just one nerve, but actually more like five nerves which come together on either side of the spine. It is technically made up of the fourth and fifth lumbar nerves and the first three nerves in the sacral spine, which merge together to create the sciatic nerve.

A Much-Needed Nerve

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.naturalsciaticarelief.com

Despite its penchant for misbehaving, the sciatic nerve is a pretty important one. In fact, without the sciatic, your legs would be little more than wet noodles. This nerve supplies sensation from the joints, bones, and basically everything below the knee. It also gives feeling and strength to the muscles and skin of the calf and foot.

Thigh Connection

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.natural-cure.org

As stated earlier, the sciatic nerve connects the spinal cord with the outside of the thigh. It wraps around the hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh, and the muscles in your lower leg and feet. When it’s pinched, it can result in muscle weakness, numbness, pain, or tingling in the leg, ankle, feet, and toes.

Back-Breaking Injuries

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.klankosova.tv

Because of how big the sciatic nerve is and it’s delicate position as sensation regulator for our bodies below the knee, it is most commonly disrupted by injuries to the back. Lower back injuries are the most common cause of problems that lead to sciatic pain, and unfortunately, many of these injuries occur without much trauma at all.

Inflammation

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.kineticedgept.com

One of the most common injuries attributed to sciatica pain can be caused by herniated discs at the L5 or lumbar area of the spine. When the disc slips and hits the lumbar nerve, inflammation can occur and radiate pain back up to the nerve receptors in the brain. Sometimes when this happens, medical help is required.

Disconnected

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.chiropractorkissimmee.com

It’s amazing, but even in the case of a severe spinal cord injury, the sciatic nerve might end up wholly untouched. However, in some of these cases, if the connection between the brain and sciatic nerve is severed, it will result in paralysis, as the nerve can no longer control connections below the waist.

Strange Syndromes

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.slideshare.net

There is also a condition, known as cauda equina, which masquerades as sciatica. Cauda equina causes weakness that can affect bowel or bladder incontinence. If left untreated, it can even create weakness or loss of sensation in the legs that gets worse over time. If you suspect this to be the case, seek medical attention immediately.

Stem Cells

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.news-medical.net

There had previously been no way to fix such severe injuries, but medical advancements have recently been made that can repair even these delicate connections. Recent work with stem cells has been found to restore the sciatic nerve connection to the brain in dogs and other animals. It’s only a matter of time before they try it on people.

Ancient Times

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.ptmovementsolutions.com

In the old days, the days when ancient Greek and Roman physicians were treating sciatica pain as a disease of the hip joint. They didn’t know what we did about the way the nerve was clustered at the base of the spine until 1764. The modern name came from 15th century Florence, Italy. Back then, they believed that the pain came from a type of tuberculosis that had worked its way down to the ischial tuberosity, or the sit-bones. They were wrong of course, but the name stuck.

Old-School Treatments

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.documentarytube.com

Now, just because they didn’t know that sciatic pain was located in the spine did not mean that the Greeks didn’t try to treat it as best they could. It was a painful condition after all, and people would basically do anything to make it better. Hippocrates came up with a number of remedies including fumigation, fasting, laxatives, and even drinking the boiled milk of a female donkey. Oddly enough, some of them worked.

Weight’s Effect

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.sciencenordic.com

It may seem odd to learn that weight has very little influence on sciatic nerve pain, especially considering all we’ve heard about how weight affects our back and how we carry ourselves. A study done in 1991 revealed that neither gender nor body mass made any difference when it came to developing sciatica.

Height’s Effect

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.theodysseyonline.com

More than 2,700 men and 2,900 women were examined in this same study and the results were very interesting. The study revealed that of all males examined, those who were tallest and between ages 50 and 64, were the most likely to have the condition. It was most prevalent in those 5’8” or taller.

Seeking Help

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.drjosephlong.com

There are a number of ways to treat sciatica. One of the most popular and effective is seeking out a chiropractor. A recent study of 120 people who saw a chiropractor three times a week for four weeks experienced a marked improvement of symptoms. Even when those visits tapered off, the sciatic sufferers still had less pain overall even if it showed back up.

Acupuncture

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.howtobecome.com

Another, albeit more unusual treatment for soothing sciatica, involves the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture. Though it may seem daunting at first and can take around 12 sessions before you start to see any improvement, it has been proven to lessen sciatic nerve pain. There are other nontraditional approaches, such as yoga, that also work well.

Yoga

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.yogahealthjournal.com

Yoga can be great for maintaining your health. It improves circulation, flexibility, breathing, and some types can even help you lose weight and build core strength. Many studies concerning the correlation between yoga and decreased sciatica pain is unclear, but any spinal manipulation has proven to help alleviate symptoms.

Surgery

Sciatic Nerve Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

Sometimes, after suffering up to six weeks of unremitting symptoms, doctors will suggest surgery. These surgeries are used to repair or remove herniated discs, thereby taking pressure off the compressed nerve. The pain can return of course, as with anything, but most people saw the positive results last for more than four years.

Of A Certain Age

Sciatic Nerve Story

The study also found that the women aged 50 or above were most likely to develop the condition. It is safe to assume that most people under the age of 50 won’t have to worry about sciatica, though there have been unlikely cases of people under the age of 20 developing the condition.

Appendicitis Story

The appendix is a three-and-a-half inch pocket of tissue that extends off the large intestine. Appendicitis is when this little pocket of tissue becomes inflamed, sometimes chronically. The experience can be extremely painful, and in most cases, a very serious condition that should be evaluated by a medical professional ASAP.

If left untreated for an extended period of time, the effects to the body can be dire. And with the commonality of the condition, everyone should take the following information very seriously.

Throwback Organ

Appendicitis Story
  Wikipedia

Due to the severity of its infection, potential to burst, and the terrible pain that follows, scientists have studied for years why humans still posses the otherwise useless organ. The best answer so far is that at some point in our evolutionary history the appendix was vital for survival, but those days are long behind.

What’s It For

Appendicitis Story
  health.clevelandclinic.org

Many have searched long and hard to find out what the appendix actually does, coming to the conclusion that it might play a role in gut immunity from harmful bacteria. This is only a partial explanation though, as the human body can achieve gut immunity from harmful bacteria without it. In most all cases, when the appendix becomes infected or bursts, doctors can simply remove it with almost no negative effects on the body.

Belly Bomb

Appendicitis Story
  newsroom.ucla.edu

Appendicitis can be recognized by a number of seemingly disparate symptoms felt in concert with one another. It usually begins with pain near the navel or upper abdomen, which gradually moves towards the lower-right abdomen and becomes more intense. This is the initial sign that the appendix may be inflamed.

Tummy Troubles

Appendicitis Story
  www.nhsinform.scot

In addition to the pain, one might feel a marked loss in appetite, coupled with nausea and vomiting. There also might be some swelling of the abdomen and pain when the area is pressed or touched. Cramps, diarrhea, and constipation can follow, along with a sense of having to pass gas but being unable to do so.

Serious Symptoms

  www.healthprep.com

Since the appendix is located in an area of the body rife with waste and bacteria (the intestinal tract), it is prone to infection. Therefore, if you begin feeling all the aforementioned symptoms and then develop a fever, you should immediately seek medical attention. This is a sure sign that there is an abscess or infection in the appendix.

Abscess

Appendicitis Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

What happens in these situations is that a pus-filled abscess forms just outside the severely inflamed appendix. Though the infection is technically “walled off” from the rest of the abdomen, it can still rupture. If it does, the infected material can spread into the rest of the abdomen and infect all the digestive tissue.

Do Not Ignore

Appendicitis Story
  zombie.wikia.com

The good thing about appendicitis, if anything, is that the severe pain it causes can rarely be ignored for long. Most people who experience an inflamed appendix will insist they go to the hospital all on their own. If they are very lucky, they will be rushed into surgery to stop the rupture.

Surgery

Appendicitis Story
  www.cheyenneregional.org

If an appendix perforates and spills infectious materials into the lining of the abdominal cavity, otherwise known as the peritoneum, the consequences can be deadly. Appendicitis is a medical emergency and it almost always requires surgery to remove the organ before it can cause further damage or sepsis inside the body cavity.

No Easy Solution

Appendicitis Story
  www.bustle.com

Unfortunately, even though it’s a problem sometimes, doctors don’t just remove the appendix for no reason. Yet without preemptively removing the sometimes-offensive organ, appendicitis cannot be prevented. Still, if one suffers chronic appendicitis or pain in the area, there are some things they can do to minimize the pain and inflammation it causes.

Off Limits

Appendicitis Story
  www.verywellhealth.com

There are actually a number of foods that we eat every day which help contribute to the inflammation and pain of chronic appendicitis. Some foods, like fruit or milk, can help ease the pain and simplify digestion, but others can have a destructive effect on the digestive tract and the ornery little appendix attached.

Fat Is Always The Enemy

Appendicitis Story
  www.cookinglight.com

For years, doctors and nutritionists have said that eating too much fat can be bad for your health. It’s not like this came as a surprise to anyone, either. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. But fat is especially bad for those who suffer from appendicitis and can be hard to digest. Most processed meats, fried foods, oil, and butter are included on this list.

Second-String Sugars

Appendicitis Story
  www.groupon.com

Second only to fatty foods are the bane of Keto dieters everywhere: sugars. Foods and drinks with high sugar content like candy, cake, muffins, artificial sweeteners, ice cream, some canned foods and sodas, are all bad news for the appendix; not to mention the gut bacteria that might reside in and around it.

Drink Up

Appendicitis Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

It’s not just the sugar in soda that can cause gut discomfort but the carbonation as well. The bubbles agitate and already agitated lower gut and can affect the inflammation of the appendix as well. Alcohol should also be avoided as it can kill gut flora and be hard to digest. Many of them are also sugary or carbonated.

That’s A Spicy Appendix

Appendicitis Story
  www.thespruceeats.com

Spicy foods and peppers are also a real problem for an infection-prone appendix and in fact, all of these foods should be avoided especially after appendix surgery. Any vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, or celery and any beans that form excess gas should also be stricken from the diet if one has chronic appendicitis.

Half-Baked

Appendicitis Story
  www.choosinghealthnow.com

It may seem strange, but even simple things like white bread and some processed cereals are also too complex for an afflicted appendix to properly digest. If your appendicitis does get to the point where surgery is required, however, there are even stricter food regimes to come. Though in this case, it’s only for a time while you heal.

Recovery

Appendicitis Story
  www.healthjade.com

A liquid-only diet is required right after appendix surgery. Any solid or complex foods, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, bread, or even eggs should be avoided while your system heals. Too much stress on the digestive tract can slow the already lengthy healing process and create the potentiality for additional infection.

Safe To Eat

Appendicitis Story
  www.usatoday.com

Doctors recommend at least one glass of lukewarm water with fresh lime and a tablespoon of honey in the morning. Milk and some small solids like nuts can be added in time, and many doctors agree that a full milk diet is actually a good idea for an appendicitis patient; unless of course you’re lactose-intolerant, that is.

Home Remedies

Appendicitis Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

Now, there are also plenty of home remedies to help assist appendicitis, chief among them is water. People who suffer from appendicitis should drink a recommended 10-12 glasses of water daily. Staying hydrated will help soften any waste and make it easier for you to defecate. That being said, if you feel any appendicitis symptoms, go to the doctor. Don’t try and fix them yourself.

Provoking Things

Appendicitis Story
  www.dreams.metroeve.com

Because appendicitis can also come with diarrhea or constipation, many people try to alleviate these symptoms by using over-the-counter medication. This is a very bad idea in most cases, as some stool softeners and laxatives cause spasms or adversely affect gut flora while increasing the chance of infection.

Rare But Deadly

Appendicitis Story
  www.archive-uy.com

So how likely are you to contract appendicitis? In the United States, one out of 20 people will experience appendicitis. It can strike at any age, but is very rare under the age of two. The malady is most common between 10 and 30 years of age. What’s important is to be mindful of the signs and seek medical help if you need it.

Signs To Look For When Dealing With Different Gallbladder Conditions

Gallbladder Story

Chances are, unless you’re a doctor, you don’t think much about the gallbladder. It’s one of those organs you may even forget exists until something goes wrong. But when there is a problem, it can very quickly become impossible to ignore.

That’s because unlike the heart or the lungs, a healthy gallbladder goes on about its business without any noticeable motion, sound, or sensation. But when something is wrong, it can be quite painful.

Small But Important

Gallbladder Story
  www.webmd.com

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that’s located just below the liver in the upper right portion of the abdomen. Though it’s only about four inches long, it plays an important role in the metabolic process.

Processing Fats

Gallbladder Story
  www.kondisiumum.com

After the liver produces bile, a compound used to digest fat and help the body absorb fat soluble vitamins and nutrients, it stores it in the gallbladder. Once fatty foods enter the small intestine, your gallbladder releases that bile so the food can be processed properly.

Problems Ahead

Gallbladder Story
  www.medlineplus.gov

But like all organs, the gallbladder can run into a number of different problems. The first condition to be on the lookout for is cholelithiasis, the formation of gallstones. Gallstones are solid masses that form inside the gallbladder, made up of cholesterol, bile salts, and bilirubin. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball.

Blockage

Gallbladder Story
  www.quora.com

A gallstone by itself isn’t a problem at all and can even go away on its own before you notice any symptoms. It’s when the stone moves into an area where it can obstruct the gallbladder’s normal function that it becomes an issue.

Primary And Secondary

Gallbladder Story
  ddc.musc.edu

Gallstones can form in one of two places. A “secondary stone” is one that forms in the gallbladder itself and is the kind that can come and go without you ever noticing it. A “primary stone” is one that forms within the bile duct, the passageway between the gallbladder and the small intestine.

Less Common, More Serious

Gallbladder Story
  c.takvim.pw

A primary stone is less common than a secondary stone but causes problems at a much higher rate. That’s because it’s already in place to block or reduce the flow of the gallbladder and potentially cause infection. A secondary stone has to become dislodged and move into the duct before that happens.

Complications

Gallbladder Story
  www.princetonhcs.org

When the bile duct is blocked, bile builds up, irritating the gallbladder. This leads to swelling, infection, and intense pain. Over time, the gallbladder is damaged until it can no longer fully function.

Perforation

Gallbladder Story
  www.wikisurgery.com

In some cases, untreated gallstones can lead to a perforated gallbladder. Meaning that a hole forms in the wall of the organ, which can allow the leakage of infection into other parts of the body, causing a widespread and severe infection.

Unusual Case

Gallbladder Story
  www.radiopaedia.org

There is another condition called gallstone ileus, which is rare but can be fatal. It occurs when a gallstone manages to pass through the bile duct and enter the intestine but once there, blocks it. It can require emergency surgery to clear the blockage.

Gallbladder Abcesses

Gallbladder Story
  www.healthimpactnews.com

A person with gallstones can also develop empyema, a condition in which pus develops in the gallbladder. It will cause severe pain in the abdomen and can be life-threatening if not treated. People with diabetes, reduced immune systems, and obesity all have an increased risk of developing this condition.

Repeated Damage

Gallbladder Story
  news.lvhn.org

Repeated gallstone attacks can damage the gallbladder permanently, leading to a rigid, scarred gallbladder. The symptoms of this are hard to pinpoint because they’re relatively common and somewhat innocuous. They are abdominal fullness, indigestion, increased gas, and diarrhea.

Growths

Gallbladder Story
  www.zadehsurgical.com

It is also possible to have two different types of growths in the gallbladder. The less dangerous is a gallbladder polyp, which is an accumulation of the membrane tissue inside the gallbladder that is normally shed by the body.

Polyps

Gallbladder Story
  www.healthline.com

Most polyps don’t have any noticeable symptoms and are usually found accidentally when someone is having an ultrasound performed on their abdomen. Most polyps are benign, but if they happen to be larger than around a centimeter, it is recommended that the polyp be removed.

Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder Story
  www.beaconhospital.com.my

That’s because a larger polyp may be indicative of the other type of gallbladder growth, which is gallbladder cancer. It’s a fairly rare form of cancer, affecting less than 4,000 Americans each year. However, it is one of the deadliest forms of cancer with a survival rate of less than 20 percent.

Signs Of Trouble

Gallbladder Story
  sg.news.yahoo.com

While the symptoms may vary a bit depending on which gallbladder condition you have, there are six signs that may indicate you have a problem with your gallbladder. The first of them is pain in the mid or upper-right section of the abdomen.

Varying Pain

Gallbladder Story
  www.arstechnica.com

That pain may come and go and varies from mild and irregular to very severe and frequent pain. Gallbladder pain can often cause additional pain in the chest and back. Movement typically doesn’t have an impact on gallbladder pain.

Stomach Problems

Gallbladder Story
  www.selfcarer.com

The second symptom is a mix of nausea and vomiting, which may occur when there is only a short term gallbladder problem. Long term gallbladder diseases and disorders may lead to chronic digestive problems such as acid reflux and gas, in addition to nausea and vomiting.

Fever

Gallbladder Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

You may also suffer from fever or chills. Of course, this by itself is not necessarily indicative of a problem with the gallbladder. However, in the presence of other symptoms, it points strongly toward a gallbladder infection.

Remaining Symptoms

Gallbladder Story
  www.us.kohler.com

The remaining symptoms are changes in bowel movement habits and light colored or chalky stool — all may indicate a chronic gallbladder disease. A person may also notice that their urine is darker than usual. Finally, they may experience jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Seek Medical Help

Gallbladder Story
  www.measurablesolutions.com

If you suspect that you may have a problem with your gallbladder, seek medical attention. If your pain is mild and intermittent, it may not require immediate attention though you should review it with your doctor at your next check up. If your pain is severe or constant, seek medical help as quickly as possible.

Common Types of Cancer Story

The phrase “you have cancer” is among the most gut-punching things to hear in the English language. It’s more than a diagnosis — the news of having cancer signals a thousand lifestyle changes and comes with a fear of the unknown that even the bravest people can’t ignore.

One of the first things we’re desperate to know after hearing such grave news it is what type of cancer it is, followed by whether or not that cancer can be cured. With more than 200 types of cancer identified to date, hearing about which one you have may be a surreal experience, but a necessary one, as you must come to terms with the diagnosis and begin the process of treatment immediately.

High Percentage

Common Types of Cancer Story
  Wikipedia

Very recently, a study found that cancer was the number two cause of death in the United States, creeping in just behind heart disease. In truth though, most of those cancer deaths happened indirectly, by way of the conventional treatments of cancer (chemo, radiation and surgery) inadvertently exacerbating things.

Many Types

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

As stated earlier, there are far too many forms of cancer to name them all here. The 14 types of cancer represented here are the major types, those which are most commonly found and diagnosed. However, there are many other rare forms of cancer the affect a lesser percentage of the population.

Cancerous Cells

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.irishtimes.com

All types of cancer share common markers. This means that cancer cells, which look different from other healthy cells, possess unique characteristics discernible by oncologists and other such experts. These markers include damaged or mutated cells, rapid cell multiplication, and the ability of these damaged cells to spread throughout the body.

Many Affected

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.tryingtobegood.com

It is estimated that more than 11 million people in the United States have some form of cancer. That’s a daunting number even with 325.7 million people in the country. It is for this reason that we’re discussing the most common forms of cancer and arming people with information on not only how to spot symptoms, but what to do once those symptoms are spotted.

Skin Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.siasat.com

The first cancer is one of several types of cancer that affect skin cells. Non-melanoma skin cancer affects more than 1 million people a year and generally presents itself in skin that has had exposure to the sun. Like all cancer, it can affect everyone, but usually affects older people or people with compromised immune systems.

Melanoma

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.medicalpress.es

Melanoma, on the other hand, allegedly affects 68,720 people and is most commonly found in moles. It’s named for the parts of the body that contain melanocyte cells, those that produce brown pigment, but can be found in other pigmented cells like those in the intestines or even the eyes. Both these skin cancers are treatable and are among the easiest to spot, though they can spread easily.

Lung Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.health.harvard.edu

Lung cancer strikes at the cells inside the lining of the lungs. There are two primary forms of lung cancer, though both are deadly if found too late. Small cell is named for the small round cancer cells that can be viewed in a microscope. Non-small cell lung cancer cells are slightly larger. Every year, both these types of cancer combined claim nearly 160,000 lives.

Breast Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  komenkansascity.wordpress.com

As expected, breast cancer is most commonly diagnosed in women. However, that’s not to say men can’t be diagnosed as well. In fact, there are about 1,900 men diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Treatment for breast cancer usually involves removing the offending breast tissue and tumor, combined with chemotherapy and radiation to halt the spread.

Prostate Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.advancedurologyinstitute.com

Unlike breast cancer, which can affect both men and women, prostate cancer only affects men. More than 190,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed annually. Most of these cases affect men over the age of 50. Prostate cancer develops in the tissues inside the prostate gland, near the rectum. Because of this location, near the colon, it is one of the more spreadable and dangerous cancers.

Cervical Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.printablediagram.com

On the opposite end of the spectrum is cervical cancer, which can only affect women; but women of all ages. It accounts for more than 260,000 deaths worldwide, 4,000 of them in the US alone. The cervix is located at the lower end of the uterus which opens into the upper portion of the vaginal canal. It is recommended that women visit the gynecologist and get checked regularly for these cancerous cells.

Colorectal Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.mana.md

The colon is part of the large intestine and helps us break down and digest food. At the end of this long, hard-working tube is the rectum. Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, many too late. It usually affects folks over 50 and can spread quickly, which is why doctors recommend annual colonoscopies after celebrating your 50th birthday.

Bladder Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  nephrology-urology.alliedacademies.com

Like any other organ, the bladder can be affected by cancer cells that develop within its tissues, which can be caused by high alcohol consumption — as can the liver and the kidneys. The most common type of cancer to affect the bladder is something called transitional cell carcinoma.

Liver Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.3ders.org

In 2015, liver cancer claimed the lives of 788,000 people worldwide. The liver is responsible for filtering the blood and food we eat. Since the liver processes all of our blood, it can, therefore, be visited by cancer cells if there is cancer elsewhere in the body. Many cancers that spread to the liver end up being fatal.

Kidney Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.esnoticia.co

The kidneys also help filter out toxins from the blood and expel those toxins through urination. Cancer can form in the tissues of the kidney ducts, usually affecting people over the age of 40. There is one type of kidney tumor, however, called a “Wilms” tumor, that affects younger children specifically. More than 49,000 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer each year.

Esophageal Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
Kenhub - Learn Human Anatomy / YouTube

Esophageal cancer is commonly referred to as throat cancer, and it takes the lives of 400,000 people each year. If you smoke, drink heavily, or are obese, your chances of developing this life-changing cancer increases greatly. Treatment for this cancer can permanently damage your esophagus, larynx and windpipe.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.aaom.org

There a number of cancers that affect the blood. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is one of them, and it affects more than 65,000 people annually. They call it lymphoma because it affects white blood cells, some of which are lymphocytes. There are dozens of different types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that affect people of all ages. The varying types and spreading of the disease can make it hard to treat.

Cancer In The Blood

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.medicalnewstoday.com

Leukemia basically results in an overproduction of certain kinds of white blood cells. It can be a chronic, slow-growing type of cancer that often begins without being noticed. Unfortunately, once the symptoms begin, they progress rapidly. Because of these factors, leukemia is a difficult cancer to treat effectively.

Leukemia

Common Types of Cancer Story
  VashiDonsk / Wikipedia

There are four main types of leukemia or “blood cancer.” These types are acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myeloid leukemia. Many of these cancers form inside bone marrow or in other tissues that form blood cells and are hard to stop at the source because, well … we all need blood to live.

Pancreatic Cancer

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.webmd.com

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most advanced and deadliest cancers. It is usually undetected until the disease has reached an advanced state. It can present itself as abdominal pain, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms are noticed, it may already be too late.

The Power Of Understanding

Common Types of Cancer Story
  www.pdxmonthly.com

The word cancer is a terrifying one, and whether you hear it about yourself, a friend, or a loved one, it remains just as terrifying, albeit in different ways. Regardless of that fact, the best way to approach the news is with knowledge. Doctors have been moving towards understanding cancer for years, and it’s through that knowledge that we learn to treat it, and perhaps one day, cure it.

Help Prevent Cancer Story

It’s a somewhat unnerving statistic to be sure, but about one of every three Americans will develop some form of cancer during his or her lifetime. Cancer also happens to be the second leading cause of death in America, kept from the top spot only by heart disease.

Regardless of these grim facts, doctors today have made great progress in the treatment and in some cases, elimination of these terrible diseases. In many cases, the best way to treat cancer is to diagnose and prevent it from the onset, and we’re here to show you how to do just that.

How Many?

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  Pinterest

Be prepared for a worrying statistic. This year alone, around 1.4 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed. Even more troubling is the fact that more than 565,000 people will die of the diseases in the same year. Here’s one good statistic though: experts believe that 60 percent of America’s cancer deaths can be avoided.

Protect Yourself

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.livewellmagazine.org

We have to be realistic about all of this, of course. As of yet, there is no catch-all cancer cure, no miracle drug that’s going to eradicate the millions of permutations of the disease. Nevertheless, while we wait for science to find that solution, we can still do a lot to protect ourselves; a great deal more than you might have believed possible.

Keeping An Eye Out

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.diversifiedhealth.ca

Many of you know this already, but the best thing one can do to prevent cancer is to make sure that you get regular check-ups, especially if you know there is a history of cancer in your family. Many of these check-ups include regular screening tests that can detect the disease before it shows any outward symptoms.

Screenings For All

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.time.mn

Men and women should go for regular screening tests. Women should perform their own breast exams and men should examine their own testicles. This is to ensure that there aren’t any strange lumps of any kind. Skin cancer checks should be done early and often as well. All of these checks can be summed up in one handy acronym.

Simple Acronym

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.nursingwithoutwalls.com

The American Cancer Society has developed an acronym for cancer prevention, which they call C.A.U.T.I.O.N. It stands for: Change in bowel or bladder habits, A sore that does not heal, Unusual bleeding or discharge, Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere, Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing, Obvious change in a wart or mole, and finally, Nagging cough or hoarseness.

Imprecise

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.whitehousepawprints.com

Though this is hardly a faultless guide, it does accurately match many of the symptoms that one might feel if one was perhaps suffering from some form of cancer. Many of these are symptoms known to a majority of Americans, and that might be due in part to the fact that most Americans have known a friend or family member to have suffered through some form of cancer.

Reducing Risk

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.trianglesci.org

As we mentioned earlier, the best way for us to reduce our risk of cancer is to get diagnosed early. The earlier a doctor knows what’s wrong, the earlier they can begin treatment to head cancer off right from the start. The question you might be asking yourself now is, can you reduce the risk of cancer before any symptoms emerge? The answer is yes.

Risk Factors

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.independent.co.uk

In 2005, a list of cancer risk factors was put together that identified the potential environmental causes of the diseases and what we could do to lower our risk. They are as follows: smoking and other tobacco use, alcohol consumption, obesity and diet, lack of exercise, carcinogens in the workplace, viruses, body size, women’s reproductive factors, pollution, poverty, excessive sun exposure, medical procedures, drugs, salt, food additives, contaminants, and family history.

No Relation

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.usnews.com

What does this all mean for you when it comes to cancer prevention, especially when it comes to family history or a genetic predisposition to the disease? Evidence shows that only a small portion of cancers are inherited, the rest of these are things that you yourself can watch out for simply by being more mindful of your choices and environment.

Break Bad Habits

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.newshub.co.nz

Smoking is bad for you, we all know this. Avoiding cancer starts with avoiding all forms of tobacco entirely, including exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking has been linked to lung cancer and other respiratory cancers as well. As for other vices like drinking, limit yourself to no more than two drinks a day. Studies show excess alcohol can increase the risk of mouth, larynx, esophagus, liver, and colon cancer.

Keep Off The Weight

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.everydayhealth.com

The next thing you can do to stave off cancer is to stay lean. Obesity isn’t just a main cause of heart disease, it also increases the risks of many forms of cancer. Burning calories with exercise not only helps keep the weight off, it actually helps everything else too. Weight isn’t the only factor though. What we eat has a marked effect on cancer development as well.

Eating Healthy

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.health.harvard.edu

Though the tests are inconclusive, there are links between the excessive consumption of saturated fat and red meat, and the increased risk of both colon and prostate cancers. Deep fried and charbroiled foods should also be limited because carcinogens can attach themselves to them.

Only The Good Stuff

Not only does good fiber aid digestion, two 2003 studies found that high-fiber diets might actually help reduce the risk of colon cancer. Increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and good fats will also help to keep you healthy, fit, and full of the nutrients we need to stave off cancer.

Shield Yourself

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  www.mirror.co.uk

This may seem like a no brainer, but one of the best ways to prevent cancer is to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation. You can do this by checking your home for radon, which can cause lung cancer. Ultraviolet radiation, found in sunlight, has been linked to skin cancer for years. Protect yourself by not staying in the sun for too long and wearing sunscreen.

Sun Down

  www.usgs.gov

There are a few radiations we don’t have to worry so much about. These are electromagnetic radiation from high-voltage power lines and radio-frequency radiation from microwaves and cell phones. Despite what many people think, neither of these has been linked to causing cancer by the American Cancer Society.

Vitamins

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  health.clevelandclinic.org

While too much ultraviolet radiation is bad, getting extra amounts of Vitamin D is actually quite good for preventing cancer. Experts today recommend 800 to 1,000 IU a day, which can usually be attained by taking a Vitamin D supplement. Careful studies in recent years have shown that other vitamins, however, like vitamins C and E, folic acid, and multivitamins are not protective; some of them may even do more harm than good.

Toxins

Help Prevent Cancer Story
  Sturmovik / Wikipedia

As much as we can, we should avoid exposure to any industrial toxins like asbestos, fibers, benzene, aromatic amines, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other such chemical compounds. It goes without saying that many of these compounds are not good for our bodies and may help form cancer cells.

Infection

A number of sexually transmitted diseases can also contribute to cancer. These are bad enough on their own and can come from sharing contaminated needles or exchanging fluids with the affected. It’s elementary of course, as nobody seeks out things like hepatitis viruses, HIV, and the human papillomavirus, but it’s still wise to remind everyone to be cautious.

Aspirin

There are actually a few tips that the American Cancer Society have thrown out there in regards to cancer prevention as well. Statistically, it has been proven that men who take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs appear to have a lower risk of colon cancer and in some cases, prostate cancer — when taken responsibly of course.

Powerful Prevention

Ironically, cancer treatments themselves — chemotherapy, radiology, and immune suppression drugs — all have the potential side-effect of increasing the risk of additional cancers. So it’s better to keep up with the cancer prevention methods and not have to get to that point at all. Ultimately, staying healthy and avoiding things you ought to avoid anyway are some of the best ways to prevent cancer.

For decades, even the most dedicated team of investigators have had a case or two that they just couldn’t solve. This is not an indication of their inability, but rather a lack of tools available to help them match a suspect with the evidence.

But, this is not the case anymore. In the past few years, a company has been perfecting a process of leveraging the power of DNA. They’ve already been successful in putting a slew of criminals behind bars, and this is only the beginning for this new technology.

Solution

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.parabon-nanolabs.com

A solution to solving decades-old cold cases is on the rise, and it involves using a new analysis of DNA evidence. A company called Parabon, along with genealogists, are using a database, whose founders had no intention of having their data used to solve crimes.

Parabon

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.parabon-nanolabs.com

In all began in 2011, when Parabon, a 3-year-old company at the time, set out on a research project for the Defense Department. Using algorithms to analyze a person’s DNA, the company created computer-generated sketches of what that person might look like. Parabon then offered the sketches to police.

Computer-Generated Sketches

  www.huffingtonpost.com

Police used the sketches as a tool to find the suspects of cold cases or the names of people who died years ago but hadn’t been identified. After learning about Parabon, hundreds of departments signed up, hoping to use the technology to crack a cold case of their own.

Arrests Using The Sketches

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.evarazdin.hr

The sketches often didn’t account for aging, but they still gave a general idea of what the suspect may look like. Over the next two years, police were able to make arrests in more than a dozen cases using sketches provided by Parabon.

Even in the early stages, Parabon’s creators knew they could improve the technology and do better as far as the genetic data they were collecting. After the initial collaboration in 2011, another Defense Department contract led Parabon to a project that developed algorithms to identify people through DNA shared with distant relatives.

Analyzing Autosomal DNA

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  genealogical-musings.blogspot.com

Traditional DNA analysis relied on DNA from immediate family, but this DNA technology enabled scientists to analyze autosomal DNA, which is inherited from both parents and does not include the sex chromosomes. This type of DNA analysis gives a more accurate picture of relationships between distant cousins.

Why It’s So Valuable

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.secondnexus.com

Autosomal DNA analysis is specifically helpful for investigations where court methods focus on matching someone’s DNA to a crime scene. Researchers immediately became attracted to the project and a group of researchers who practiced genetic genealogy jumped on board.

Identifying Deceased Soldiers

They began merging these new DNA techniques with mapping family trees. One of the genetic genealogists, CeCe Moore, was a leader in the field as she helped people fill in the blanks of their ancestries. She offered Parabon help with the project and began by searching for relatives of American soldiers whose remains had not yet been identified.

Detective Work

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.lauraburgess.com

Parabon’s founder and CEO Steve Armentrout was impressed with Moore, saying, “She’s a geneticist, a genealogist, and, make no mistake, she’s a detective.” Once Moore realized that her skills could help with police cases in which forensic science work had failed, she spoke to law enforcement officers.

Improving The Technology

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.genomemag.com

At a forensics conference in 2014, Moore sought to encourage the officers to explore Parabon’s new DNA testing technology. Back then, ancestry companies like 23andMe and Ancestry.com were becoming increasingly popular among ordinary people seeking to learn more about their family history.

GEDmatch

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.gedmatch.com

However, databases like 23andMe have been inaccessible to law enforcement, so a Florida startup offered a way to bridge the gap. The startup, GEDmatch, allowed people to upload their profiles and share them in one place, making them publicly searchable.

Saw An Opportunity

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.medium.com

Parabon executives saw the company as a huge opportunity, but they couldn’t explore the database just yet. They had to wait until GEDmatch hit a million entries, which they did in 2018.

It Was Only The Beginning

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  Google Maps

Researchers from Parabon jumped on the opportunity and Armentrout told NBC News, “Let’s see if we can work out some cases.” At the time, Parabon’s headquarters were in Reston, Virginia, and they had around 20 employees. But they shared one major concern.

A Change Of Plans

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.flickriver.com

They were unsure if the public would accept GEDmatch’s terms and conditions so they began by focusing on the bodies of people found dead and nameless. But those plans changed in April 2018, when police announced that they used GEDmatch to arrest a suspect in a decades-old series of murders.

Golden State Killer

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.washingtonpost.com

Between 1974 and 1986, a man reigned terror across the state of California, and he was given many nicknames, one of which was the Golden State Killer. Lead investigator Paul Holes said that his team used GEDmatch to find the man believed to be one of California’s most notorious criminals.

How They Did It

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.ktla.com

Using sequence data from old crime samples, police created a genetic profile for their suspect and uploaded it to the free site. That gave them a pool of relatives who all shared some of that same incriminating genetic material. The team then used other clues, like age, sex, and place of residence, to rule out potential suspects. The search eventually narrowed down to 72-year-old Joseph DeAngelo.

Decades-Old Case Solved

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  Plethrons / YouTube

Police arrested DeAngelo, who was accused of committing more than 50 rapes and 12 murders. While 23andMe doesn’t allow law enforcement to access their customer databases unless they get a court order, no court order was needed in this case. However, as DNA testing becomes more popular, this new analysis raises concerns about due process and civil liberty.

Is It Legal?

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.mirror.co.uk

Representatives from 23andMe explained to Wired.com that police can’t simply upload a DNA profile they have from old crime scenes and sign up for the company’s services. This is primarily because they don’t accept digital files. The database entrance requirement is three milliliters of saliva. While cops have found a way around this before …

Privacy Concerns

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.geospatialworld.net

… there is increased worry over privacy concerns of people who get their DNA tested for fun. Further, people who have never been tested certainly don’t expect their genes to turn them into suspects. GEDmatch’s policy states: “While the results presented on this site are intended solely for genealogical research, we are unable to guarantee that users will not find other uses. If you find the possibility unacceptable, please remove your data from the site.”

Deterring Criminals?

Parabon-Nanolabs Story
  www.lernerspersonalinjury.ca

The reaction has been overwhelmingly in favor of the use of GEDmatch by law enforcement. However, according to NBC News, Moore and Parabon did point out that the information they provide to police is not the final word. Detectives still must confirm that they have the right person through more traditional DNA matching. Moore hopes the techniques will become so prevalent that they could act as a deterrent, causing criminals to think twice knowing their DNA is more likely to give them away.

Signs You or Your Child May Be Suffering From Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

HFMD Story

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infection that is not particularly uncommon around the world but for many people, there are a lot of misconceptions about it. It often starts off as a simple fever and some other symptoms that may make it seem like the flu or some other common bug.

But within a few days, other symptoms develop that clearly indicate HFMD. This article will let you know what signs will tell you that a person has HFMD and clear up some common misconceptions about the infection.

Enterovirus

HFMD Story
  www.kindercarepediatrics.ca

HFMD is an infection caused by several members of the enterovirus family of viruses, all of which are categorized by a single positive-strand genomic RNA. Regardless of which virus is responsible, the effects on an individual are the same.

Similar Names

HFMD Story
  blog.nativefoods.com

HFMD is not the same thing as foot and mouth disease (FMD), which is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cows, pigs, sheep, goats and other animals. Animals cannot catch HFMD from humans and humans can’t catch it from animals.

Appropriately Named

HFMD Story
  www.says.com

The infection gets its name because after a period of fever and generally feeling unwell, an affected person develops discolored spots or bumps that may blister on the hands, feet, and mouth. While many people believe these are the only places the spots can occur, it is not uncommon for them to appear on the buttocks or groin region.

Other Symptoms

HFMD Story
  www.livescience.com

In addition to those symptoms, an affected person usually experiences a sore throat and decreased appetite. In infants and toddlers, it can express itself in irritability that the child is not yet capable of explaining.

How HFMD Spreads

HFMD Story
  www.wikihomenutrition.com

HFMD is spread person to person by direct contact with the virus. It is a common misconception that one can only contract HFMD by touching another person’s spots, but this is not the case. The virus is most often spread by sneezing or coughing, but also can be carried in the blister fluid or stool of infected individuals.

Dirty Surfaces

HFMD Story
  www.hellodoktor.com

The viruses that causes HFMD can also be transferred to inanimate surfaces such as desktops and faucets. From there it can be transferred to a person who touches those surfaces, then touches their nose, mouth, or eyes before washing their hands. Similarly, changing the diapers of an infected infant without wearing gloves or washing hands after can spread the disease.

Young and Old

HFMD Story
  www.shawneechiro.com

Though HFMD most often affects children under the age of five, adults can get it as well, contrary to popular belief. However, it’s possible for adults to exhibit no symptoms or signs that they are infected, though they can still infect others.

Incubation Period

HFMD Story
  www.modernmom.com

Another misconception about HFMD is that the infection is contagious starting when you can see the spots and ending when they go away. This is actually wrong on both counts. First, a person is contagious for a day or two before the spots first appear, around the same time that the person might experience fever.

Still There

HFMD Story
  www.guyslonghair.com

Then, once the spots and all other symptoms are gone, HFMD can remain in a person’s respiratory or intestinal tract for around six weeks. During that time, it’s still possible for that person to transmit the infection even though they’ve completely recovered.

Risk Factors

HFMD Story
  www.todaysparent.com

It’s important to recognize the risk factors involved with HFMD in order to take the necessary precautions to prevent infection. The most important risk factor is spending time in a place with a lot of children.

Contagious Kids

HFMD Story
  www.rt.com

If you work in a daycare or preschool, your odds of contracting HFMD increase considerably. Because the disease is spread by personal contact, through the air from coughing or sneezing, or coming in contact with the feces of infected person, adults who spend their time changing diapers or around children with less than stellar hygiene are at particular risk.

Outbreaks

HFMD Story
  Flickr

Much like the flu, HFMD tends to “go around” at a certain time and be all but absent for the rest of the year. Like other diseases caused by enteroviruses, HFMD is more likely to occur during the summer and fall period of the year.

No Specific Treatment

HFMD Story
  benefitsbridge.unitedconcordia.com

There is currently no antiviral medication, vaccine, or cure for HFMD at the moment, so the best course of action is to prevent an infection before it happens. By simply practicing hand washing, you greatly reduce your risk of contracting the disease.

Pain Treatment

HFMD Story
  www.addiction-ssa.org

Thankfully, most cases of HFMD do not require specific treatment. Simple pain medication or mouth numbing gel that is appropriate for the age of the affected person can be used to address the discomfort.

Simple Advice

HFMD Story
  www.popsci.com

To speed recovery, a person with HFMD should get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Most of the symptoms will subside in a number of days, in most cases. A doctor will not need to provide medical care unless there are complications related to the infection.

Possible Complications

HFMD Story
  www.xconomy.com

Potential complications for HFMD are rare, but when they do occur require immediate medical treatment, especially if the affected person is an infant or toddler. The most common complication is dehydration, which may require IV fluids to treat.

Meningitis

HFMD Story
  www.techcrunch.com

Viral or aseptic meningitis can occur with HFMD in rare cases. That condition is characterized by fever, headache, stiff neck, or back pain. It is usually mild and clears without treatment but in some cases, hospitalization may be required for a short time.

Strange Side Effect

HFMD Story
  www.healthline.com

Perhaps the most unusual complication is fingernail and toenail loss. Approximately four to eight weeks after having HFMD, some people report a loss of their nails. It’s not clear exactly why this happens but it is temporary and normal nail growth resumes afterward without any sort of treatment.

Newcomer

HFMD Story
  www.babyment.com

Compared to other similar diseases like mumps, measles, and chickenpox, HFMD is relatively recent. It was first reported in 1956 in Australia and has since been recognized around the world as a common childhood illness.

New Research

HFMD Story
  america.aljazeera.com

For that reason, we don’t yet have the depth of research and the subsequent medical technology to fight against HFMD. But as always, science is moving forward and new antiviral agents are being developed to combat the disease.
