Deputy Robert Kunze III Story

Police officers dedicate their lives to protecting and serving their communities. If necessary, many are even prepared to sacrifice their own lives if it means saving an innocent life or stopping a dangerous criminal.

In September 2018, a Kansas police officer lost his life after responding to a call about a dangerous man in the middle of a crime spree. However, when the community heard about the brave officer’s sacrifice, they went above and beyond to show their appreciation.

A Suspicious Man

On the afternoon of Sunday, September 30, 2018, a resident who lives 20 miles west of downtown Wichita, Kansas, noticed a suspicious looking man. According to the resident, who called 911, the man had been eyeing their pickup truck and two ATVs. The family feared the man might be looking to steal them.

During the 911 call, the owner of the truck and ATVs explained that the suspect was driving a black pickup truck. When the suspicious man got back in his truck and drove off, the caller and a teenager told dispatch that they were going to follow the man. After hanging up, dispatch immediately sent officers to the scene.

At about 1:18 in the afternoon that Sunday, Deputy Robert Kunze and another deputy responded to the dispatch about a suspicious character. However, it took them more than 20 minutes to track the suspect down. Once Kunze caught up, he hoped to figure out what exactly the man was up to.

Arriving On Scene

The police officers hoped there was just a misunderstanding. However, when Kunze arrived at the scene around 1:42 p.m., he knew the man was up to no good. As he pulled up to the scene, Kunze saw the man and the hood up on the black pickup truck, which the police later learned had been stolen.

The Witnesses

The two witnesses who originally reported the suspect had also followed the man to the scene. By the time Kunze arrived, they were parked in a car in front of the pickup truck. However, at that point, the black truck had not yet been reported stolen.

A Dangerous Crime Spree

Kunze hoped to speak to the suspect and figure out what was going on peacefully. However, as he spoke to the man, he realized he had just interrupted a crime spree. The suspect, 29-year-old Robert Greeson, had just carried out a carjacking the night before.

Since Greeson had been seen lurking around the ATVs, its believed that he was planning his next target. However, those plans were interrupted by Deputy Kunze, who decided to take the convicted criminal into custody. Sadly, Kunze never got the chance to do that.

A Deadly Fight

According to authorities, Deputy Kunze had found a gun in Greeson’s waistband while patting him down. He placed the gun out of reach and then continued to handcuff the suspect. At that point, however, Greeson started fighting back and managed to get ahold of the .40-caliber gun that he had stolen hours before.

Calling For Help

Greeson shot Kunze in his chest just above his protective vest. According to authorities, Kunze pushed the emergency button on his radio at 1:48 p.m. to signal he was in trouble and radioed in to say he had been shot. However, he refused to let Greeson get away.

Running Out Of Time

Kunze knew that there wasn’t time to wait for backup to arrive. If he didn’t stop Greeson, the dangerous criminal would likely kill the two witnesses who originally reported him. He would also continue on his dangerous crime spree where others would likely be harmed.

Despite the fact that he had just been shot, Kunze mustered all the strength he had left and got back up on his feet. Before collapsing, Kunze managed to shoot and kill the 29-year-old, who had an extensive criminal history including aggravated battery. Just a minute later, another deputy arrived at the scene.

According to authorities, the deputy found the two witnesses hiding behind a truck. He also found Greeson lying face down in a ditch with the stolen handgun next to him. Kunze was lying on the road on his side. Neither men were responsive.

Kunze, who had been on the force for 12 years, received first aid at the scene and was rushed to a nearby Wichita hospital. Doctors fought to save his life, but the damage was too severe. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

When other officers learned that Kunze had died after responding to the call, they were devastated. However, they couldn’t help but feel proud that Kunze got up and kept fighting in order to stop Greeson. “That’s what I’m most proud of — doing what he was trained to do,” Sheriff Jeff Easter told The Wichita Eagle.

“Without a doubt in my mind, [Kunze] prevented loss of other life because of the two witnesses standing there” Easter added. “They’re witnesses to him murdering a sheriff’s deputy. … They were in grave danger if [Greeson] would have survived. Because if you’re willing to kill a law enforcement officer …. [you’ll] take the life of anybody.”

The Funeral

Word about the sacrifice Kunze made in order to protect his community from a dangerous criminal quickly spread. When his life was being honored at the funeral, officers from the Reno County Sheriff’s Department were amazed to see the community and law enforcement from across the state and the country came out to pay their respects.

Paying Their Respects

“We were in awe of the support of agencies from across the state and nation as the sanctuary was full of Law Enforcement Officers,” the Reno County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “This paled in comparison to how the citizens of Sedgwick County honored Deputy Kunze along his procession route. For around five miles citizens stood as the lengthy procession drove through the city. Several citizens stood with hands over their hearts or in salute to a fallen hero.”

But the community’s support didn’t end there. After the funeral, officers went to a local restaurant for a lunch in honor of Deputy Kunze. “We were a large group and there were a few other agencies who also came to Felipes to eat,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Near the end of the meal while we were waiting on our checks the manager came to our table with an envelope that was left by another patron.”

A Gesture Of Appreciation

“Not only were our meals graciously paid for but several other groups (if not all) were also covered by this person. To whomever you are, Thank You!” the sheriff’s office said about the moving gesture of support. “Deputy Robert Kunze III, we salute you and will carry on the work you did. Rest Easy Brother.”

Priceless Support

In addition to showing support and appreciation for Deputy Kunze and the police, the community has also rallied around the deputy’s family. So far, Rodney, Brandon, and Johnny Steven, who own the Wichita Thunder hockey team, have raised more than $50,000 for the family. To raise the money, the brothers climbed on top of the Wichita Ice Center and refused to come down until they sold $50,000 worth of tickets to the team’s opening weekend. According to the brothers, all of the sales from the tickets will be given to the fallen officer’s family and they are continuing to raise money for the family.

Trucker Finds Dog And Saves Its Owner After Series Of ‘Divine’ Coincidences Leads Him Off The Beaten Path

When most people see a healthy looking dog with a collar, a name tag, and a leash still attached, their first thought is that the animal is lost and needs to be returned.

In late September, one clever dog used that to his advantage and sat in the middle of a road until someone drove by and stopped to rescue him. However, once a tow truck driver fell for the dog’s trap, he proceeded to show the man his true motive, which was at the bottom of a steep hill.

Remote

As a tow truck driver, Martin Jay Hall Jr. is used to driving along roads and highways that are unfamiliar to him. It’s just a normal part of the job, but normally, he has GPS directions to keep him from getting lost. Recently, however, he was driving down a road that was so remote that his GPS didn’t work.

Another Way Out

  youtube.com

According to Hall, he had been working near the city of Mariposa, California, in an extremely rural area. At the end of the job, Hall planned to drive his tow truck back home the same way he arrived at the property. However, Hall ended up having to take another exit from the property because the gates at the entrance were locked.

The Directions

  shutterstock.com

Since Hall was on a property in such a remote area, his GPS didn’t work, but the owners of the property assured him it was a simple route. “I obliged them and received directions out,” Hall told PEOPLE. “The directions consisted of one fork in the road that I would have to make a right on.”

The Second Fork

  shutterstock.com

Hall followed the remote road and went right when he got up to the fork in the road as he had been instructed. He assumed the road would continue on and eventually run into the main road. Yet after a few more minutes of driving, Hall found himself at another fork in the road.

At A Standstill

  shutterstock.com

The owners of the property never warned him about a second fork, so he sat there for a few minutes not knowing which way to go. “After I passed the supposed only fork in the road I came upon a second fork in the road that I was not given directions to,” Hall said.

A Random Choice

  shutterstock.com

Hall noticed that the street names were exactly the same in both directions. After a few minutes trying to figure out what to do, he decided to just pick one randomly and see where it went. If it led him the wrong way, he could just turn back and go the other way.

The Black Dog

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

According to Hall, he was driving down the dirt road for a few minutes until he saw a black dog sitting in the middle of the road. The dog was alone, but Hall immediately noticed the dog was wearing a collar. He also noticed the dog still had a leash attached to his collar.

Red Flags

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

“As I got closer I noticed the leash and collar,” Hall said. For Hall, both those small details were red flags. He also noticed that the dog seemed to be healthy, well-fed, and his coat was clean, which signaled to Hall that the dog couldn’t have been out on his own for very long.

Lost And Alone

  abc13.com

Hall, who owns two rescue dogs and five rescue cats, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Without thinking, he decided to get out of his truck and get a closer look. Thinking the dog was lost, Hall’s first instinct was to try and capture it and alert authorities.

Food And Water

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

“I first tried to capture the dog by walking towards it. He kept moving away from me. I tried to offer my PB&J sandwich to no avail,” Hall explained. He then tried putting out a water jug for the mysterious dog as he had no idea how long he had been out in the sun.

Reaching Out to Facebook

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

Since he wasn’t having any luck capturing the dog, Hall took out his phone and took a video of the dog so he could post it to a Facebook page for lost pets in the area. His hope was that the dog’s owner would see it and contact him. “I found this dog with a leash on it he won’t come to me,” the truck driver said in the video.

No Other Options

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

“That sucks this dog doesn’t come to me, dogs like me sometimes,” said Hall. No matter what Hall offered the dog, it refused to move even though he was clearly hot and panting in the blazing sun. At that point, Hall didn’t think there was anything else he could do.

One Last Attempt

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

Hall got back in his truck and decided to go get help. He hoped the dog would stay in that exact spot, which seemed likely since he hadn’t budged the entire time, so he could find him again. However, as he drove by in his tow truck, Hall felt compelled to try one last time to figure out what the dog wanted.

A Different Approach

“At that moment something in my head said ‘Stop and ask ’em again,’” Hall said. This time, when Hall got out of his truck, he tried a different approach. Instead of trying to catch the dog, he simply started talking to him and whistling.

A Voice In The Distance

  shutterstock.com

In response to his whistles, Hall heard what sounded like another dog barking in the distance. Hall immediately turned the engine of his truck off so he could hear better and called out. This time, he heard a person. And when Hall walked off the road in the direction of the voice, he noticed a flashlight in the dirt.

The Injured Owner

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

At that point, the black dog started walking in the direction of the voice and Hall followed him along the hilly path. Eventually, the dog led him to his owner, an elderly man lying in the dirt. The man, named Paul, explained that he had fallen down an embankment and broke his hip.

Loyal Companions

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

According to Paul, he had fallen in the early hours of the morning before sunrise and it was almost noon by the time Hall had discovered him. That meant that Paul’s black dog had gone off and sat in the road waiting for someone to stop for hours. Meanwhile, Paul’s other dog dutifully stood guard next to him the entire time.

An Overprotective Dog

  abc13.com

“I saw him just kinda … I’m trying to comprehend what to do in that moment,” Hall told Western Journal. Hall tried to help the injured man, however, his protective dog refused to let him get close. Instead, Paul instructed Hall to go to his house, which was about a mile away, and tell his wife about what happened.

Help On The Way

  Courtesy: Martin J. Hall Jr.

Once at their home, Hall sent out an SOS to an ambulance company. While waiting for help to arrive, Hall did his best to make Paul comfortable. He used a tarp to shade Paul from the hot sun, gave him raisins to snack on, and gave both Paul and his dogs water to stay hydrated.

Too Many Coincidences

  abc13.com

“I’m happy that I was able to provide this man and his family help, and I feel like there was a lot of ‘coincidences’ that had to align for me to be there at that time,” Hall told PEOPLE after helping rescue the elderly man. “Almost too many to be normal — more like divinity.”

Worried Father Uses Hidden Camera to Uncover Daycare Owner’s Horrid Abuses

Rebecca Anderson Story

There was a time, not so long ago, where the idea of both parents having to work and children being dropped off at a daycare center, was almost unheard of. Unfortunately, as the value of a dollar slowly decreases, and the cost of living invariably rises, it’s not uncommon for busy parents to leave their kids at daycare during the work week.

Of course, when you’re a parent, you’re putting an awful lot of trust in the caregivers working at those establishments. Peace of mind is superbly important and parents do have to put trust in people they barely know. Sometimes, to their dismay.

Love And Attention

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

There is an assumption when one drops one’s children off at daycare for the day: that they will be well-cared for. To a lesser extent, we want them to be happy while they’re there as well.

Worried Dad

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.beckyshomechildcare.com

Those assumptions are what make this story so heartbreaking. The tale begins with a worried father who had enrolled his 6-month-old son at Becky’s Home Child Care in Mesquite, Texas. It was a local daycare center and he had known several people whose children seemed to flourish under Becky’s care. Nevertheless, he entered the arrangement with some amount of trepidation.

Yelp Reviews

Rebecca Anderson Story
  BigTunaOnline / shutterstock.com

Those who used Becky’s daycare spoke about how well she helped the children through the transition period of going to school. They lauded her certifications, her CPR training, and her kind demeanor. Yet, despite the positive Yelp reviews of the daycare center, the man was still concerned. This was his infant son, after all.

Unease

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

Becky was nice enough and evidently knew her stuff when it came to child care. Also, the 60-year-old caretaker had evidently been at this for a while and he was a new perhaps overly-worried father. Even so, something seemed off about her and he wanted a little extra peace of mind.

On Camera

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

The paranoid – though understandably concerned – father decided that only photographic evidence of his son’s well being would ease his worry. The next day, before he brought his son into daycare, he hid a small camera on the boy’s car seat. It would be one of the best decisions of his life.

Evidence of Cruelty

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

He picked his son up that night and brought him home. When he was sound asleep for the night, the dad plugged the camera into his computer and reviewed the footage. What he found was more awful that he could have imagined. The recording showed Becky abusing not only his son but the other children in cruel, unusual ways.

Unusual Abuse

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Nine-Twenty / Flickr

The man took the amateur footage to the police. They were similarly astonished to find daycare proprietor Becky Anderson yanking the 6-month-old out of his car seat, picking him off the ground by the bib tied around his neck, and finally feeding him an unknown substance out of the end of a plastic syringe.

Looking Around

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.nbcdfw.com

The Mesquite police quickly obtained a search warrant for the daycare, which also happened to be Anderson’s home, and arrived on the scene to investigate what else she might be doing before it was too late. The police made sure to conduct the search during business hours so that they could witness firsthand what was going on there.

Seven Hours

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.nbcdfw.com

The first thing the police found when they arrived were several trapped children. Three of them were stuck in their car seats and closed-off in a dark closet in the master bedroom, another was in that same bedroom, locked inside and unable to leave of their own accord. The kids had allegedly been trapped in the seats since the moment they arrived seven hours earlier.

Tied Down

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.nbcdfw.com

The 6-month-old son of the worried father was not the only child who Anderson had mishandled. She may have yanked him up by the bib around his neck, but she also tied laces around the necks of some of the other children as well. These shoelace-like ligatures prevented the children from moving too much in their car seats.

Freeing Them

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

The knots and laces were so tight around some of the children that the police officers had to struggle to remove them, ultimately opting to carefully cut them out rather than waste time. Police had to cut off several of the laces restricting the children and their movement. Once they had rescued all the kids, they brought Anderson in for questioning.

Admission

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Mesquite Police Department

The 60-year-old woman and former daycare owner admitted that the unknown substance she had been feeding the baby through a syringe was an over-the-counter medicine. Based on how drowsy the children seemed, that, at least, sounded like the truth.

Medicinal Remedies

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Google Maps

Becky Anderson isn’t the first devious daycare worker to drug the child in her care. Not long ago, three caregivers at Kiddie Junction in Des Plaines, Illinois were arrested for doing almost the same exact thing. In that case, three girls were brought in for drugging their cranky kids with over-the-counter medicinal gummies.

Melatonin

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Tihi_Photo / shutterstock.com

The three daycare workers, believing that there would be no long-term after effects, gave young children melatonin gummies. For those who don’t know, melatonin is a sleep-hormone supplement typically used to help induce sleep in insomniacs.

Admission

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Roman Tiraspolsky / shutterstock.com

In her police interview, Anderson admitted that she had given the Tylenol to all of the children, not just the little ones. She had essentially shirked her responsibilities entirely and put all of the children in real danger as a result. The questions to answer now were: To how many children and for how long had she been doing this?

Above Board

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.nbcdfw.com

It’s true that Anderson’s initial Yelp reviews were fairly glowing. The daycare was even licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Anderson originally registered the daycare at 4307 Tamarix Court in July 1989 and had been in business for nearly 30 years without incident.

Checked Out

Rebecca Anderson Story
  Google Maps

People liked Becky Anderson, she was personable and good at her job. The children in her care came home at the end of their parents’ workday seemingly safe and happy. Even the original complainant noticed no changes in his son’s health or demeanor, he’d just had a bad feeling. So what changed? When did Anderson go from caregiver to abuser?

Ongoing Situation

Rebecca Anderson Story
  www.nbcdfw.com

It may take some time to suss out the answers to those questions, and the investigation into Anderson’s abuses is ongoing. Mesquite police have said that they are probing into all the allegations and that the probe “is a collaborative effort between multiple agencies and care providers”.

Charged

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

As of this writing, Rebecca Anderson has been charged with nine counts of endangering a child. She is currently in the Dallas County Jail on a $45,000 bond awaiting trial. As more evidence is uncovered, perhaps we will gain some insight into what precisely makes a woman like her stray so far from who she allegedly used to be.

Strange Motives

Rebecca Anderson Story
  shutterstock.com

Meanwhile, parents everywhere are likely to consider their child care options a bit more carefully for the next few years. Most of us would like to believe that such a thing could never happen in our lives, that our children are safe. But you never really know who you can trust these days, can you?

Celebrities And Athletes Reach Out After No One Shows Up to 6-Year-Old Boy’s Birthday Party

Sil Mazzini Story

When parents arrange birthday parties for their kids, their main fear is that no one will show up to celebrate. That eventuality can have a serious long-term effect on a toddler, leaving them feeling unloved and unwanted.

When Sil Mazzini posted a picture online of her 6-year-old son Teddy looking devastated as he sat at a table full of pizza with no friends, she had no idea that it would grab the attention and support of celebrities and NBA players alike.

Birthday Party

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

Mazzini sent out the invites to Teddy’s classmates promptly and had no reason to assume that no one would turn up for the party. But when that happened, in the heat of the moment, the distraught mother pulled out her phone and took a picture of her son looking sad. She had no idea that the photo would go viral and even make it to a famous DJ’s social media accounts.

Peter Piper Pizza

Sil Mazzini Story
  tishomir / shutterstock.com

Peter Piper Pizza is a kid-friendly pizza joint located in Tuscon, Arizona. Teddy is a popular kid at his school, and his mom made sure to order enough pizza to feed however many kids and parents showed up. When not a single one of the 32 classmates showed up, Mazzini was devastated, but mainly for poor Teddy.

Local News

Sil Mazzini Story
  NickVinZant / Twitter

Mazzini thought nothing of it when she shared the sad image with local newspaper reporter Nick VinZant. In the image, poor Teddy can be seen sitting almost in tears at a large table full of pizzas but with no friends to share the experience. That picture garnered more than 2,000 comments and was shared more than 1,000 times.

Deep Regret

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

No sooner had Manzzini shared the image that she regretted ever doing so. “If I could go back in time back to that Sunday night I would have never sent the photo online. We are overwhelmed and can’t believe a photo would go viral like this. I hate it every minute of this exposure,” she said, according to Daily Mail.

No Party

Sil Mazzini Story
  Ted Bollinger / Facebook

The whole incident has been so traumatic for Mazzini and poor Teddy that she has decided to take him on a trip next year and not even try to arrange another party. As she said to the New York Post when asked if she would try to arrange a party for Teddy’s seventh birthday she said: “No we are not. Not anymore, I don’t think so because it’s so much planning for me. I will just take him on a trip.”

Many Choices

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

Possibly the most tragic part of this story is the fact that little Teddy was given the option by his folks to visit Disney World, Legoland, or have a party with his class. Unfortunately for Teddy, he chose the latter, and it turned out to be a total flop.

Halloween Carnival

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

For her part, Mazzinni and her family described themselves as “heartbroken” over what had happened to Teddy. She said she believes it’s due to parents and kids being worn out from the school’s Halloween carnival which took place the day before Teddy’s party. On top of that, it was pouring with rain on that Sunday, and it’s possible no one felt like venturing out.

One Apology

Sil Mazzini Story
  Ted Bollinger / Facebook

To make matters worse, only one parent called Mazzini to apologize for not showing up with her son to the party. As Teddy’s dad, Ted Bollinger said: “I was bummed, I was bummed out for sure,’ he said. “Teddy, the biggest things for him was having his classmates there, so not seeing them show up an hour into the party was disappointing,’ he added.

Making Do

Sil Mazzini Story
  Sil Mazzini / Facebook

Being just six years old, Teddy didn’t understand fully the implications of what happened at his party. His mom even told reporters that he enjoyed the pizza he got and also enjoyed playing on arcade games inside the store. Teddy made do on that day and according to his parents he “got over it quick.” But the viral image of him looking sad was still online and gaining likes.

Tough Boy

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

According to Bollinger, he told his wife not to post the image to social media, knowing it could well go viral and create a problem. “He’s six, so he was distracted by the arcade games, the pizza, he got over it quick. He’s tough. But when Sil told me she was posting [the photo], I told her not to do it, but she did, and it took off. It’s pretty wild,” he said.

Seeing Dad

Sil Mazzini Story
  Sil Mazzini / Facebook

Because Bollinger works at an oil field in Alaska, he doesn’t get to see his son Teddy so often. Just the fact that his pops was there at his party made Teddy smile, even if he was disappointed that he had to celebrate alone. “So at the end of the day, he was very happy,” Mazzini said.

Under Criticism

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

The family has sadly been criticized a lot on social media for posting that picture of Teddy. Nevertheless, Mazzini claims she didn’t post the image to get sympathy. “We didn’t do this for attention or for gifts or anything,” she said. “I did it in the moment, but I wasn’t smart. I was upset. That’s it.”

RSVP

Sil Mazzini Story
  Google Maps

The family bought the pizzas in advance of the guests, having received 15 RSVPs from parents who said they were bringing their kids to celebrate with Teddy. When not a single one of his classmates from BASIS Tuscon Primary School showed up, Teddy’s parents were at a loss as what to do to minimize the damage. The pizza was ordered, the goodie bags prepared but no one showed.

Two Weeks

Sil Mazzini Story
  shutterstock.com

It’s not as if the party was organized as a last minute thing. As Mazzini explained to reporters: “I sent invitations two weeks in advance with my phone number and had 32 goodie bags full of toys for each kid in the class.” And the wasted pizza ended up costing the family $130, and all the goodie bags were wasted too. Nevertheless, Mazzini came under a lot of pressure from people online who claimed she was trying to get sympathy for Teddy.

Not Expected

Sil Mazzini Story
  Nick VinZant / Facebook

Mazzini just thought she was posting an image online and had no idea that it would go viral. As she explained, “I was kind of shocked and then at the end when I had to pay for it, I was upset. That’s why I wrote a message. But I never expected any of this, for this to go so viral,” she said. Nevertheless, the fact that the image did go viral has opened up some amazing opportunities for Teddy and his parents.

NBA Stars

Having made the rounds online, the viral photo of Teddy at his party caught the attention of both the Phoenix Suns NBA team and the Phoenix Rising MLS team. They invited Teddy to celebrate his birthday at their next game, offering him free tickets for the match and a personalized jersey.

Teddy was thrilled when he received the Twitter invite from the team who wrote, “Teddy can get The Mala from @VeneziasPizza and join 7,000 of his closest friends this Friday. Come on out Teddy! #UpRising.” And Teddy and his family decided to take them up on their offer.

Lebron James

Teddy was excited to be able to attend the Phoenix Suns game versus the Los Angeles Lakers as a special VIP guest. He was also excited to see Lebron James in action. However, the original viral photo also made its way to someone even more famous: the much-loved DJ Khaled.

Instagram Post

For whatever reasons, DJ Khaled decided to post the image of Teddy looking sad to his Instagram account along with the caption: “Bless up and happy birthday to the Young King Teddy! The Khaled Family, @asahdkhaled and the We The Best foundation want to send you a birthday present!” Thanks to all the online love he received, Teddy was able to move on the from the flopped party incident.

Moving On

When Teddy arrived at school the next day, his friends and classmates apologized for not attending his pizza party. As his mother told reporters, “It was a tough day for him, but it happened, and we’re moving on.” As a result of the whole thing, Teddy has made hundreds of new online friends and has received so much support. The pizza party is now a distant memory for a kid who has moved on with his life.

They say that money is the root of all evil and based on some pretty concrete historical evidence, it’s hard to argue against that particular idiom. Money can be as much of a blessing as it is a curse, whether you have too much or too little.

In the same way, money can also drive a wedge between people, even those who have been friends for years. The minute you involve money in your friendship, things become even more complicated, and people do weird, sometimes sinister things when it comes to money.

Recently, however, the septuagenarian specialist has been brought up before the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.

Peculiar Case

  tn.gov/health

The health professionals at tn.gov/health comprise the governing body responsible for disciplining doctors throughout the state of Tennessee. As such, they are often called in to deal with difficult or peculiar cases involving the behavior or practices of doctors. Suellen Lee’s case is most definitely one of these peculiar cases.

A Set-Up

  shutterstock.com

If you asked Suellen about the current case against her, she’d tell you that she was being “set up” by a vindictive patient. Nevertheless, recent pressure from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, coupled with an unwinnable legal case, has essentially forced her the former doctor into retirement.

All Lies

  shutterstock.com

Suellen’s retirement also comes with the added bonus of forfeiting her medical license. Of course, though she acquiesced to the board’s offer of early retirement, she recognized that fighting the tide would be useless and costly. Even still, she attests that all the accusations levied against her, horrible as they may sound, are outright lies.

Costly Loan

  shutterstock.com

Suellen’s trouble began a few years ago when she found herself at the end of her rope. Her medical clinic had fallen on hard times and Suellen’s only option was to ask one of her patients, a friend, for the $300,000 she needed to bring her out of debt. It was a decision she wasn’t sure she could make, but it was her only choice.

Two Decades

  shutterstock.com

Miraculously, her wealthy patient and friend were more than happy to lend her the substantial sum. She even arranged so that Suellen could pay it back over time instead of in one impossible lump sum. The arrangement worked for a while, with Suellen dutifully making repayment over the course of the next 20 years.

Friend And Patient

  shutterstock.com

The patient, friend, and co-worker that initially lent Suellen the money has been referred to as E.W. for purposes of anonymity. E.W. and Suellen had been friends and, in the scope of $300,000, business partners for over 25 years. They even managed to remain friends over the course of the repayment, and Suellen remained her physician.

When Loans Fail

  shutterstock.com

The repayment plan worked for nearly two decades, until one day, it didn’t. E.W.’s most recent request for payment of the considerable loan was met with animosity and negativity. For some reason, whether because she didn’t have the money or because she simply didn’t want to pay any longer, Suellen decided to put an end to their arrangement.

Crazy Person

  shutterstock.com

However, Suellen’s plan for getting out of the still-substantial debt was to use her clout as a licensed doctor to officially diagnose E.W. with dementia. That’s right, in order to weasel out of a very old, generous, life-salvaging debt, Suellen Lee diagnosed her friend with a mental illness that would render unable to control the course of her own life.

Denied

  shutterstock.com

Suellen then allegedly sent a letter about E.W.’s diagnosis to the patient’s daughter. The daughter, unsure what else to do, forwarded the letter to E.W.’s financial company as a precaution, who then denied E.W. any access to her assets. The whole situation soon spiraled out of control.

Call The Cavalry

  shutterstock.com

E.W. vehemently denied that she had any sort of dementia and accused Suellen of fabricating the diagnosis to get out of the debt. Eventually, the case made its way to the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, who sent their own experts in to double check on the diagnosis and ensure that no abuse of power was taking place.

No Sign

  shutterstock.com

An approved psychologist assessed E.W. and eventually found that there was no indication of dementia. The board concluded therefore that either Suellen was incompetent and really thought her friend to be mentally infirm, or that she made up the diagnosis on purpose. Either scenario required that she come in and offer an explanation.

Admission

  shutterstock.com

Suellen was brought before investigators and almost immediately admitted that she had diagnosed E.W. purely on “observation.” That is to say, she used no official testing method for dementia. She also didn’t bother to get a second opinion from a mental health professional, which she herself is not.

Stick to Her Guns

  shutterstock.com

That said, Suellen’s admission did not preclude her from standing by her initial dementia diagnosis. As far as she was concerned, E.W. exhibited erratic behavior and clear signs of memory loss. She appeared to get violent when she got angry and was therefore dangerous to others as well as herself.

No Scheme

  shutterstock.com

Suellen recently spoke to the Tennessean about the whole thing in a telephone interview. She expressed that the facts of the case have become twisted so much that it now appears the diagnosis was all part of a scheme to get out from under the loan.

Easy to See

  shutterstock.com

It’s not hard to see why people would believe E.W. over Suellen. Looking at the facts, we see that Suellen is an aging doctor with a substantial debt still under her belt. If she retires, she’s still on the hook for the debt. Yet, if she retires and E.W. is unable to keep track of finances, then the debt becomes unofficially “forgiven.”

No Choice

  shutterstock.com

In the end, Suellen signed the consent order, thereby voluntarily retiring her license and agreeing to pay a fine of $2,000. Her friendship with E.W. has understandably ended and her name and lifetime of good work are forever marred with the lingering rumor that she abused her power. Even if it isn’t true, it certainly doesn’t help her reputation.

Recent Cases

  shutterstock.com

There have been several recent cases like this. Cases involving doctors who have abused their power to the detriment of their patients. These other cases are of course a fair bit worse, mind you, but all of them involve a financial gain in some way. Take the Texas doctor who falsely diagnosed patients and accumulated $50 million in fraudulent medical claims because of it.

Massive Scheme

  fbi.org

The doctor in question is Jorge Zamora-Quezada, and the massive scheme he orchestrated jeopardized the wellbeing of not only regular patients but the elderly, infirm, disabled, and even children. He violated his Hippocratic oath to do no harm by administering unnecessary chemo and other toxic medications to these patients.

Abuse of Power

  shutterstock.com

Now, what Zamora-Quezada did is definitely more sinister than Suellen Lee, but its most definitely in the same wheelhouse. Abuse of power is not something to take lightly and it is especially reprehensible when it comes to wielding that power over a patient, not to mention a former friend.

Starbucks Discrimination Story

In this day and age, large employers like Starbucks need to be sensitive to the needs and requirements of their staff members who are part of the LBGTQ community. No matter what a person’s gender or sexual orientation, it has nothing to do with their boss whatsoever.

When Maddie Wade decided to make the transition from male to female, she assumed that her colleagues and bosses would have her back and support her decision fully. But when they started discriminating against her for all the wrong reasons, Wade decided to take action.

Fresno Starbucks

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  Yaoinlove / shutterstock.com

When Wade started working at Starbucks back in 2009, she loved her job and always looked forward to going to work. By 2014, Wade was promoted to supervisor, a role that suited her character and personality to a tee. When she was transferred to the Milburn location in 2016, Wade had heard that it was known as the worst Starbucks in town, but she just did her job and earned her salary.

Gender Dysphoria Disorder

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

During her time working at Starbucks, Wade got involved with the LGBTQ community after she decided that she was really a woman and not a man. This condition is called gender dysphoria disorder, where a person feels they are the wrong gender stuck in the wrong body. At one point Wade decided that she was going to start the transition into becoming a woman physically but is claiming that her manager harassed and discriminated against her because of this decision.

Fresno Superior Court

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Having commenced her journey to become a woman, Wade took it upon herself to sue Starbucks in the Fresno Superior Court. She claims that when the company got wind that she was transitioning, they cut her hours and discriminated against her. According to the claim, Wade was forced to leave Starbucks due to what she described as “intolerable conditions.”

Unlimited Damages

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

As a result of the perceived discrimination of Wade by her employers, she is seeking unlimited damages from the company. She claims that she lost her job and her health insurance which affected her so deeply that she had to stop the process of transitioning from male to female. The issue was even more difficult for Wade as she had hoped to secure a long-term career with the coffee giant.

No Respect

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Wade explained her position in a statement she made that was read out in court. “I loved my friends and colleagues at Starbucks and expected to have a long-term career with the company,” Wade said. “It was humiliating to come to work every day and be treated with no dignity or respect. I never would have expected this kind of behavior from a fellow employee who failed to represent the culture and ethics that have come to embody Starbucks as a global brand.”

Great Improvement

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shuttestock.com

Having been at the Milburn Starbucks for a while, that store went through a bunch of different managers, and its reputation improved. Her manager, a Mr. Guthrie, and Wade worked well together after he offered to take her “under his wing” and promised to promote her to assistant manager before long. As a result of this great partnership, the location went from one of the worst to one of the best Starbucks in Fresno.

Coming Out

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Back in September 2017, when Wade told her boss about her plans to transition, she also politely asked him and her other colleagues to use female pronouns when addressing her. She explained to her boss that her work wouldn’t suffer as a result of her transitioning as she would make up the time she needed to take for medical appointments. But the atmosphere at work changed radically, and Wade was acutely aware of it.

Religious Views

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Guthrie told Wade about his opposition to her transitioning, noting that it wasn’t in line with his personal religious beliefs. Wade knew he was a Christian and that he was interested in a career in politics. She was also aware that he shared his political, religious and moral views often on social media. According to the complaint, Guthrie acted in a homophobic manner to Wade and discriminated against her for becoming a woman.

Different Beliefs

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  www.abc30.com

Guthrie made his feelings on transgender people abundantly clear when he posted a picture of John Wayne on his social media along with the caption: “Cutting off your pecker does not make you a woman. It just makes you a guy that cut off his damn pecker!” Other posts on his social media also discussed the fact that he disliked Caitlin Jenner who he said just wanted to “cross-dress without being judged.”

Hey Bro

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  www.abc30.com

According to Wade, her coworkers respected her wishes to be called by female pronouns and were supportive of her decision to transition. However, she claims, her boss Guthrie called her “Matt, brother” and “man” when addressing her, and also cut her hours severely, so she became more like a part-time member of staff than a full-time member. But Guthrie claims he didn’t discriminate at all.

Confronting Him

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  Savvapanf Photo / shutterstock.com

At one point, Wade plucked up courage and confronted her boss about the pronouns and cut hours. Guthrie claimed he had no issue with her at all and was just fooling around. However, Wade knew what discrimination looked like and felt she was being singled out on a constant basis by her boss. At the same time, complaints to the head office went unanswered and unresolved.

New Location

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Wade ultimately left the Milburn location earlier this year and took time off work to get facial feminization surgery. When she returned to work at a different Starbucks store in May, she was hopeful that the discrimination she had suffered was a thing of the past. Wade was excited about her new role at the Blackstone and Barstow avenues Starbucks location, but then the issues started up again.

More Issues

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  IAMSUTHICHA / Shutterstock.com

Wade claims that things got even worse when she started working at the new location, despite her hopes for change. She claims that customers demeaned her on purpose, calling her “Sir” and “Man.” According to Wade, her new manager “dismissively laughed about it” and brushed off Wade’s concerns, according to The Fresno Bee.

Toxic Environment

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Wade was so upset about the treatment she was receiving that she needed to see a gender therapist to talk through her problems. That therapist advised her to quit her job due to a “toxic workplace environment” which was “adversely affecting her mental and physical health.” The therapist also referred Wade to a stress therapist, but she couldn’t afford to do so as she had lost her health insurance from Starbucks.

Job Security

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

One of the main issues in this case is that Wade only embarked on her transition due to the fact she perceived she had job security from Starbucks having worked there for so many years. Her income, job status, and healthcare meant she was able to undergo work to make her a woman but when she was fired it all had to stop abruptly.

Seeking Damages

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

For her part, Wade is not about to let Starbucks get away with discriminating against her for wanting to change gender. As a result of the legal advice she received, Wade is now seeking a large amount of money in compensation from her former employer, including general damages, special damages, punitive damages, and legal fees.

Gender Equality

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

Arnold Peter, Wade’s attorney, also spoke to reporters about his client’s predicament. He said he was surprised by Wade’s experience as Starbucks has a solid reputation for being socially progressive and forward thinking when it comes to things like gender equality. The fact that Wade was in a vulnerable place at the time just makes matters even worse.

Starbucks Failed

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  shutterstock.com

According to Peter, Starbucks failed to protect his client and also failed to help her as a long-standing member of the Starbucks community. “Clearly, in this case, the company failed to protect a dedicated and hardworking employee when she was at her most vulnerable,” Peter said. But now it was time for Starbucks to respond to the difficult allegations against them.

Zero Tolerance

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  Grand Warszawski / shutterstock.com

The statement from a Starbucks spokesperson could have been written by a speechwriter and was full of the standard platitudes one would expect. “At Starbucks, we strive to create a culture of warmth and belonging, where everyone is welcome and have zero tolerance for the harassment of our partners or customers. We encourage all of our partners to alert their local leadership the moment they feel uncomfortable or unsafe at work. In those instances where partners don’t want to speak with their manager or choose to remain anonymous, we have processes in place that allow them to provide details over phone, email or fax,” they said.

Changing Times

Starbucks Discrimination Story
  www.abc30.com

In the modern age, as more and more people identify as “non-binary” or change their gender, large corporations like Starbucks need to be extra sensitive to the new landscape when it comes to fair employment. There can be no excuse ever for discriminating against someone based on race, religion or gender. The case of Maddie Wade highlights the fact that discrimination certainly still exists, even if the bosses at Starbucks are in denial that it takes place within their company.

LGBTQ Valedictorian Receives Generous Gifts After Parents Kick Him Out Of Home

Even today, in this enlightened age, it’s not an easy thing to be a member of the LGBT community. As accepting as many in our society are, it’s still difficult to be different. Some folks, whether because of social or religious bias, can’t look past their own misconceptions to accept everyone, even their own children.

This was the exact situation that a Jacksonville high school student faced. His devoutly religious parents had found out that he was gay and couldn’t get past it. The years following his outing were not only difficult, they also threatened his entire future.

Kicked Out

  Courtesy of Seth Owen

Seth Owen’s senior year was rapidly coming to an end. Despite him being Valedictorian, Seth dealt with a number of unfavorable issues. He faced a life without his family’s love and support and the wasted potential of a higher education that he couldn’t afford on his own. Still, he had some things to be thankful for.

On Ellen

  shutterstock.com

Seth Owens was not your average young man. He was clever, handsome, Valedictorian of his graduating class, and not least of all, he was gay. Most people would consider that the things that made Seth different are what made him special. Ellen DeGeneres sure thought so, which was why she eventually invited him on her talk show to tell his story.

Fix Him

  ellentube.com

Ellen had invited Seth on her show to talk about his amazing story, one that had gone completely viral over the summer. He began by explaining his parents and how it came to pass that they learned he was gay. It was during his sophomore year of high school that his father went through his cellphone and learned the secret truth.

Conversion Therapy

  shutterstock.com

Religious as they were, Seth’s parents could not forgive that their son was a homosexual. They decided that the only way to help him was to “fix him,” so they sent him to conversion therapy. This medically debunked practice is often used by Christian organizations as a means to change one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Dangerous Influence

  shutterstock.com

Seth was sent to a retreat in order to participate in conversion therapy. Though he was intelligent and fully aware that this wasn’t the best thing for him, a part of him still trusted that the “healthcare professionals” at the camp were doing what was best for him. At the end of the summer, Seth returned home no less gay than he had been when he’d left.

Disagreement

  shutterstock.com

Unwilling to upset his parents, Seth tried to play it straight as best he could. He didn’t try to date women or anything, he just didn’t go flashing his sexuality in his parents’ faces. Things continued that way for a while, until one February day in his senior year, when Seth openly disagreed with the teachings of his family’s anti-gay church.

On His Own

  shutterstock.com

Seth was forced to move out of his parent’s house after that. It was the middle of his senior year when the young man found himself completely homeless and bereft of both family and financial support. Seth began couch surfing with a number of his friends in Jacksonville. Eventually, he was invited to move in with his best friend’s family.

A Dream, Dead

  shutterstock.com

Unfortunately, after only a few weeks of this, Seth realized that not only had he been separated from his past, his future was also in jeopardy. He had dreams of attending college at Georgetown University. But getting there without the financial help from his parents would prove to be nearly impossible.

No Contribution

  shutterstock.com

Of course, Seth hadn’t any illusions about his family putting in anything towards his college education, now that he was no longer a part of them, but he had thought to apply for financial aid. The problem was that financial aid is determined based on the expected contribution of one’s family, and his would no longer be contributing anything.

Helping Hands

  www.gofundme.com/hoyaseth

All was not lost. Jane Martin, one of Seth’s former teachers and a mentor of his, had a mind to help the young man. She set up a GoFundMe page in his name. Her hope was that with some community support, she might raise enough money for his tuition. Both of them would be more than pleasantly surprised at the response.

Skyrockets

  www.gofundme.com/hoyaseth

The original GoFundMe goal was $20,000, but as soon as national news outlets got wind of Seth Owen’s remarkable and heart-wrenching story, everything changed. In a matter of weeks, Jane Martin’s fundraiser skyrocketed from a meaningful twenty grand to an incredible $140,000. It was more than enough to get him into Georgetown and then some.

Stepped In

  shutterstock.com

By August of 2018, people across the country were following Seth’s story with rapt attention. Eventually, even Georgetown caught wind of it and decided to step in. After taking a look at his high school transcript, they offered him a full scholarship to attend. With the help of teachers and friends alike, Seth’s dream had become a reality.

Attend on His Own

  ellentube.com

“Due to their efforts and attention,” Seth explained to Ellen, “they were able to adjust my aid package even further, my expected contribution is now $0. With these new adjustments, I will be able to attend Georgetown University this fall.” Perhaps most remarkable of all, however, is the fact that Georgetown is actually a Jesuit, that is to say, Christian University.

Supportive Staff

  www.gofundme.com/hoyaseth

By the time Seth was invited onto the Ellen show, he was two weeks into his first semester at the prestigious school. He said that the staff at Georgetown was exceptionally supportive and helpful. “Our residential minister actually lives on my floor. She told me that she was there to support me,” he explained.

Spiritual Advice

  shutterstock.com

Seth went on to tell Ellen that “As someone who’s been through something like this with religion, it meant the world to me to hear from a spiritual adviser that they had my back.” Ellen responded with a statement about how religion should do just that. How it should comfort people and support them for being the person God made them to be.

Award

  ellentube.com

Ellen had more than just wise words for her guest that day, however. The Emmy-winning talk show host ended up awarding the 18-year-old college freshman an additional $25,000. Seth plans on using that money towards the scholarship fund he had been creating for LGBTQ students like himself who do not have the financial support of their parents.

Cheerios

  ellentube.com

“We’re partnering again this year with Cheerios to encourage one million acts of good, and they’re inspired by young people like you,” said Ellen, as she brought out the check. “They’re going to help you start your scholarship with this check for $25,000.” Seth was so grateful that he could barely contain himself.

Inspired

  timemagazine.com

Ellen DeGeneres herself had come out publicly as a homosexual in 1997. This revelation was met with mixed reviews at the time, but Seth explained that her bravery in regards to her sexuality was inspirational for him. “I often had to look up your videos for inspiration. There were so many times that you really pulled me through,” he explained.

Parents Who Care

  ellentube.com

It must be said that not all parents out there believe the same things as Seth Owen’s intolerant parents. Take, for instance, Nathan Mathis, the Alabama man who lost his daughter to suicide. Patti Sue had killed herself because she was a lesbian and could not take the pressure and ridicule she received from her religious community.

Working Together

  cnn.com

Today, Nathan spends his life campaigning for LGBT youth and helping to teach parents to accept their children for who they are, regardless of their religious scruples. These are valuable lessons for parents and children who are facing uncertainty and seeking to find reconciliation with one another. We must all work together to teach tolerance and acceptance.

Football Mentor Finally Jailed After Abusing Hundreds of Starry-Eyed Youngsters

Barry Bennell Story

When budding young soccer players in the U.K. started training at the Crewe Alexandra and Manchester City clubs, they were full of life and inspiration. But one of their coaches had other ideas for these young lads. Those ideas turned into years of abuse as well as a serious scandal.

Barry Bennell had himself been a youth player at Chelsea before he started coaching. Having worked for four professional football clubs in England, Bennell was ultimately arrested during a trip to Jacksonville, Florida. The numerous charges against him were nothing short of shocking.

Some History

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

Having coached soccer at Manchester City, Crewe, Stoke City, and Leeds United, Bennell portrayed himself is a model coach with high moral standards. Sure he was very touchy-feely with many of the young players, but most thought nothing of it at the time. Besides, times were different back in the 1980s and 1990s, and no one cared so much about that type of stuff.

Coming Forward

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

The scandals came forward in November, 2016 when a former professional football player came forward and talked publicly about the rampant sexual abuse he had suffered at the hands of his then-coach, Barry Bennell – a man with dark secrets that had been hiding for years.

Pied Piper

Barry Bennell Story
  Guardian Football / YouTube

Bennell was described by many in the world of British football as a “pied piper” who promised his young, up-and-coming football players that he would transform them into big stars. Bennell took full advantage of starry-eyed youngsters who would have done anything to become professional football players. As a junior football coach and scout, Bennell was in the perfect position for years to take advantage of minors in his care.

Prolific Abuser

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

Once Bennell had groomed his victims, he would perform all manner of sex acts on them, guarding their silence with promises of fame in later life. According to the allegations, Bennell abused countless boys, some of which more than 100 times each. But Bennell had a reputation as one of the best youth coaches and scouts in the U.K. and was able to gain trust easily because of that.

Summer Camps

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

As well as organizing and running summer camps in the U.K, he also arranged soccer camps in the U.S. It was during once such soccer camp in Jacksonville, Florida, where the first allegation of sexual abuse came out. A 13-year-old British boy on the tour told his parents that he had been sexually abused by his coach. Bennell was arrested and sentenced to four years in a U.S. jail.

Insatiable Appetite

Barry Bennell Story
  Guardian Football / YouTube

Police described Bennell as having an “insatiable appetite” for young boys. Bob Bowers, chairman and founder of the team Bennell had been coaching, said, according to the Daily Mail: “He did the con job of all con jobs. … He mesmerized people in terms of his football skills. It was like watching a circus master at work. But we were all looking at the football. We weren’t conscious of the darker secret.”

Soccer’s Foul Play

Barry Bennell Story
  Tony Mee / YouTube

The U.K. Channel 4 aired a show in 1997 on their Dispatches series called “Soccer’s Foul Play.” It was all about Barry Bennell and his antics over the years. The maker of the documentary, Deborah Davies, said that Bennell was a “Starmaker” and that gave him some serious hold over the young minds and bodies he was grooming.

100 Times

Barry Bennell Story
  http://thesurvivorstrust.org

Ian Ackley, an ex-footballer trained by Bennell, who appeared in the Channel 4 documentary, said that he was raped more than 100 times by Bennell between 1979 and 1983. The rapes took place during nights away with the football team or during school holidays.

U.K. Verdict

Barry Bennell Story
  D. Pimborough / shutterstock.com

No sooner had Bennell finished his prison sentence in Florida that he was back on British soil being arrested again. This time, he was sentenced to nine years in prison by Chester Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to 23 charges, all relating to sexual offenses he committed in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. However, there were another 22 allegations that were left to lie on his file at the time.

Third Conviction

Barry Bennell Story
  Milton Keynes / MySpace

The long arm of the law had finally caught up with this sexual predator even if the lives of so many young boys were already ruined. In 2015, Bennell was charged again at the Chester Crown Court on two counts of indecent assault. He was also charged on two counts of enticing a boy under the age of 14 to commit an act of gross indecency. On this occasion, he was jailed for another two years.

Andy Woodward

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

The fourth police investigation into Bennell started after Andy Woodward, an ex-Crewe, Sheffield United and Bury footballer, spoke to The Guardian about the abuse he had suffered from Bennell. Having been scouted at the age of 11 when playing for Stockport Boys, he told the publication that he was one of “hundreds of children who Barry Bennell cherry-picked for various football teams.”

Four Years

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

Bennell had his home kitted out for young boys. Woodward explained that he was often invited over to Bennell’s home where he was made to feel welcome. “When you walked through the door there were three fruit machines. He had a pool table. There was a little monkey upstairs in a cage who would sit on your shoulder,” he said. “He had two Pyrenean mountain dogs. He even kept a wildcat.” Woodward also claimed he was sexually abused by Bennell for four years.

More Victims

Barry Bennell Story
  news.sky.com

Other footballers came forward after the Woodward allegations. Steve Walters, Chris Unsworth and Jason Dunford all claimed they had also been abused over the years by Bennell. Unsworth said he stayed at Bennell’s house several times and that there was sometimes three or four boys in his bed at a time. “We never spoke to each other about it,” Unsworth told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme.

Fourth Conviction

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

In November, 2016, Bennell was charged with five further counts of indecent assault against boys. On top of that, he was charged and found guilty of two counts of inciting a boy to commit an act of gross indecency and one count of assault with intent to a serious sexual assault. However, Bennell denied those charges outright as he did with most of the others. Eventually, he was charged with a total of 55 offenses involving 12 complainants, aged 8 to 15.

Industrial Scale

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

When the case came to the Liverpool Crown Court, it was alleged that Barry Bennell was a “child molester on an industrial scale.” For that matter, he preyed on young boys who “cared only about one thing – becoming a professional footballer.” That’s why “Many would do anything to achieve their dream,” the prosecutor in the case said. “Barry Bennell knew that, and he exploited that.”

Sheer Evil

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

While the judge dubbed him as “sheer evil,” he also said he was the “devil incarnate.” Having been sentenced to 30 years in jail on his fourth conviction, Bennell is appealing the sentence as was expected. Despite more than 90 former players claiming they were sexually abused by him, he claims he deserves a lesser sentence even though he was found guilty of 50 offenses.

Massive Sentence

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

The judge who passed sentence on Bennell, Clement Goldstone QC, passed sentences totaling 454 years, to run concurrently. However, he told Bennell that he would serve the longest individual term of 30 years, with another 12 months on license. Due to the technicalities of the British system, that means he will be eligible for early release after 15 years, and he is claiming that is an excessive sentence.

No Remorse

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

The judge spoke in court directly to the convicted man. “Your behavior towards these boys in grooming and seducing them to, in some cases, the most serious, degrading and humiliating abuse was sheer evil,” Goldstone told him. “You appeared as a god who had it in his gift to help fulfill their ambitions and realize their dreams. In reality, you were the devil incarnate. You stole their childhoods and their innocence to satisfy your own perversion.”

In Remission

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

Bennell’s attorney, Eleanor Laws, told the judge that her client was in remission from cancer, having needed two operations to remove tumors. She claimed that prison wasn’t realistic for Bennell as he needed to be fed through a tube eight times a day. She also claimed that he was taking anti-anxiety medication and had undertaken treatment programmes to deal with his pedophilia.

Football Helpline

Barry Bennell Story
  shutterstock.com

Soon after the trial of Barry Bennell, the Football Association set up a helpline, asking players who had been abused by Bennell to come forward. That helpline received over 50 calls within the first two hours of opening. Within three days that number rose to 30, and within a month 1700 calls had been received. This shows just how many young boys lives were affected by a pervert who evaded real justice for so many years.

Survey Shows A Major, Common Problem Shared By Millennials: Debt

Young People Savings Story

A recent study has concluded what we may have already suspected, that half of all young adults have no savings. The figures were based on U.K. data from the Wealth and Assets Survey, a large-scale household survey which is used to measure changes in incomes, debt, and asset wealth.

Young Americans are estimated to have more in savings, according to Bank of America’s “Better Money Habits” report, but, still, most millennials, regardless of where they live still worry about money. Some of the people surveyed spoke out to share their experiences.

Interviews

Metro recently put out a very thought-provoking article involving the relationship that young people have with money. Many of the points were pretty spot on and they interviewed young adults to get a feel for how confident or insecure they feel when it comes to money.

Most Young People Have No Savings

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

The general consensus is that most young people have absolutely no savings and that they owe a large amount of money to credit card companies. While the women interviewed lived in the U.K. (their names were changed for the purpose of the article), their relationship with money is strikingly similar to many young adults living in the U.S.

The Statistics

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), data shows that 53 percent of young people between the ages of 22 and 29 have no savings at all. Most young people are struggling to save money due to high rent and unstable work and this causes them to have lower self-esteem. The data from 10 years ago showed that 41 percent of that same age group had no savings.

Decline In Savings

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

An increase in 12 percent of people having no savings is a big problem because it shows that this generation is in trouble. Many young people can’t even imaging owning a home one day. That reality seems almost unattainable after young adults have paid their rent, bills, and other expenses.

The Harsh Reality

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Of the young people ONS surveyed that do have savings, 4-in-10 of those people have less than 1,000 pounds saved. Rachel, 24, is a freelance journalist who makes around 120 pounds a day (over 31,000 pounds per year), and she has just 300 pounds in a savings account. Her savings is going to be deposited towards a rented flat and it will be the first time ever that Rachel saved anything.

Freelance Journalist

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

She says that she’ll need just over 1,000 pounds before she can move out. To be able to save that money, Rachel has stayed with her grandparents for a couple of weeks, as most of her money from her salary before that went on rent. Now, she’s able to put around 100 pounds a week in a savings account and any money she makes from freelance gigs will also go into savings.

Huge Debts With High Interest

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Rachel is one of the many young adults who has an uncomfortable relationship with money. When Metro asked her about her history and how she came to be in the place she’s in today, Rachel offered an explanation that sounds very familiar to what many people deal with. “It’s probably a mixture of factors, from not having much of it when I was younger to racking up huge debts which now need to be paid off (with the high interest that comes with it),” she explained.

Annual Interest Rates

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

It’s estimated that the average interest rate on a credit card is around 15-25 percent. The annual interest will depend on your credit score, but oftentimes, once many young people get into debt, their APR soars. When it feels like you’re constantly paying off interest and not your actual debt, it can be tough to pay it down. Rachel felt like she needed to feel more in control, as she doesn’t earn a bad salary, yet still, she was constantly chasing her own tail.

Personal Circumstances

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

While how she feels is all too common, Rachel explained that many personal circumstances led her to be in the position she’s in now. After her flat burned down this year and last year she had to move out after a toxic relationship, she once again was set back and had to borrow money without a financial safety net. “One day I’ll get there, once the debts are paid off, I just need to pray nothing bad happens to me in the next week [so] I can save.”

Feeling Shamed

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Another woman named Beth said she’s her manic spending is a product of her bipolar disorder. It’s ultimately pushed her into debt and made it harder for her to save money. Beth earns around 35,000 pounds per year but she always feels shamed when it comes to savings. She admits that she’s starting to save now, but that it can be taken away at any point.

Pressure

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Beth feels a sense of shame around struggling with money. “I feel a pressure to save money more than ever now because I feel like it has become the new normal to brag about buying houses and deposits,” she says. While having a nice cushion of money is a good feeling attributed to adulthood and responsibility, if you don’t have enough in your savings, you can feel like a failure.

Lack of Conversation

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

“The lack of open conversation around money means we compare ourselves to an often unrealistic ideal,” Metro explains, and they’re pretty spot on. Another woman, Samantha, 25, has tried over and over again, but she can’t seem to get into a stable routine of spending and saving. The end result is she is constantly stressed, which pours into other areas of her life, causing them to suffer.

Taking Money From Savings

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Samantha says she earns a decent amount for her age, which is why she feels ashamed that she only has less than 600 pounds in her bank account. “It’s frustrating. I’ll go through periods of time when I have thousands of savings and I feel like I’m on the right track, then I’ll end up overdrawn on my current account and have to keep borrowing money from my savings to get through the month.”

Feeling Burdened

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Over the last few months, Samantha has been spending so much that her savings have been depleted entirely. She admits that she’s worried because if she were to lose her job, she wouldn’t be able to pay her rent. Additionally, if there’s any surprise expense, she wouldn’t be able to pay that either. It’s a huge burden for her to feel this way.

The Emotional Side Of Spending

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

“Each month I’m ambitious with my savings and transfer 500 pounds to my account the second I’m paid, but a few weeks in I’m overdrawn again. I don’t know how to stop. … A lack of comfort around money holds young people back from saving, causing rash decisions and panic spending because they were never taught how to manage their money,” the website wrote.

Spending to Cope

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Amy, 29, got herself into debt when her dad passed away. She bought things to cope with the pain since she was in a really bad place. Thinking that buying things would help, Amy soon learned that it didn’t, which didn’t surprise her. “I’d bought lots of lovely things, not just for myself because if I bought nice things for my family it’d take their sadness away a bit too – but obviously none of it helped,” Amy said.

Open Conversations About Savings

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Amy is currently saving money because she is working her way out of debt and looking forward to reaching its end. “If I didn’t have the debt, I’d be about 600 pounds up a month in savings.” Amy adds that she doesn’t feel comfortable at all with money and she wishes people would talk more openly about saving.

Anxiety

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

“Yes, there are plenty of things we should just know and of course we are all responsible ourselves for these situations, but I feel budgeting should be something we talk about with our kids, as well as the realistic costs of living and making a life for ourselves,” she says. “I feel embarrassed about money and yes it does cause anxiety.” Amy says she cannot wait until she’s debt free and she has a much healthier relationship with money.

The Stress of Getting Into Debt

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Then there’s Emma, 24, who works as a senior account executive and makes 27,000 pounds a year. While she struggled with money in the past, she’s finally starting to feel confident in her ability to save. Just last year, she bought a flat and she plans to save 350 pounds a month once she’s paid off outstanding debt on her credit card. “Normally I set up a direct debit to come out the day after payday and try and forget about it after that. I’m usually pretty good at saving,” Emma says.

More Open Conversations

Young People Savings Story
  shutterstock.com

Emma concluded: “[Money] used to be all I thought/worried about but I’ve trained myself to check my balance regularly, plan my spending, budget, learn about ‘scary’ financial products like pensions and investments and I feel a lot more confident now.”

Dolphin Communication Story

As animal rights increasingly gain momentum in public discussion, activists are shedding light on the deplorable living conditions that are destructive to their existence. Without urgent action, each day, thousands of animals will continue to lose their lives.

When scientists conducted a study on the communication patterns between dolphins, their findings sent shockwaves around the world, revealing that humans have disturbed the marine ecosystem in an unexpected way.

An Intelligent Species

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

At least 39 species of dolphins populate the ocean waters, according to the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Not only are dolphins a highly intelligent marine species, but they also play an important role in ecology. Any drastic change in their ecological existence could cause irreparable damage to their ecosystem and ours.

Ocean Water Helpers

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Dolphins play a vital role in the underwater life, often preying on ill or old fish. By eating these fish, the dolphins rid the water of them, helping to cut down on infectious disease among fish populations. This keeps more fish species healthy and alive to reproduce.

Sanitary Police

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Think of dolphins as the “sanitary police” of the ocean as killing them results in more disease and lower fish populations. For example, dolphins may eat fish afflicted with the toxin ciguatera. Since ciguatera-infected fish cause food poisoning if people eat them, dolphins help keep these fish off our dinner table. But, sadly, the underwater equilibrium of dolphins is drastically changing due to humans.

The Threat to Their Existence

Dolphin Communication Story
  Dolphin Institute / Facebook

Dolphins absolutely suffer threats to their life from natural disease and shark attacks. However, the main threat to dolphins comes from human beings. The Dolphin Institute states that Bottlenose dolphins and other marine mammals face a number of conservation threats due to human induced  impacts on the marine environment. Among the common threats to dolphins’ existence are habitat degradation, boat traffic, fishing interactions, and pollution.

An Entire Species Extinct

Dolphin Communication Story
The Natural History Museum / YouTube

Worldwide, dolphins, like countless other animals, face a variety of impacts that threaten their existence due to humans. In recent history, the Baiji, a beautiful river dolphin, was recently declared extinct. The increase in construction of dams and boat traffic in its river habitat had been detrimental to the dolphin population, wiping it out as a whole.

A Shocking Study

Dolphin Communication Story
  aferkizilkaya / shutterstock.com

One recent study on the marine creatures has raised major concerns among ecologists and animal activists. As if humans weren’t already doing enough to destroy the planet and harm our fellow creatures, the study has revealed that human-caused noise is hindering the ability of dolphins to communicate with one another.

Underwater Tests

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Researchers from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science laid underwater microphones on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to find out more about the ambient noise levels in the area off the coast of Maryland. They found that dolphins are altering the way they communicate with one another to be heard over noise from boats and other vessels in nearby shipping lanes.

Like a Noisy Bar

Dolphin Communication Story
  www.umces.edu

“It’s kind of like trying to answer a question in a noisy bar and after repeated attempts to be heard, you just give the shortest answer possible,” said Dr. Helen Bailey, a marine biologist with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science who studies protected species in order to understand their habitat use and informal conservation and management. “Dolphins simplified their calls to counter the masking effects of vessel noise.”

Noise Caused by Ships

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Bailey’s assistant, Leila Fouda, added, “The simplification of these whistles could reduce the information in these acoustic signals and make it more difficult for dolphins to communicate.” The researchers, who gathered data by putting microphones on the ocean floor, noted in the study that while it’s possible for ambient noise to occur naturally, the noise they recorded underwater was “mainly” caused by ships.

Dolphins’ Whistle Patterns Destroyed

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Naturally, dolphin calls have a complex sound pattern with rises and falls in the pitch and frequency in their whistles. However, in the recent study, these researchers found that human induced noise had changed their natural whistling patterns. With background noise, such as the low frequency chug-chugging of a ship’s engine, their usually complex whistle signatures completely flat-lined

Dolphin Dependence On Sounds

Dolphin Communication Story
  www.umces.edu

Dolphins are highly social animals, and they produce calls for many different reasons. They talk to each other to stay together as a group, they whistle when they feed, and they even call out their names when different groups of dolphins meet. “These whistles are really important,” Bailey said. “Nobody wants to live in a noisy neighborhood. If you have these chronic noise levels, what does this mean to the population?”

Noise Frightens Dolphins

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Noise travels far further in water than in air. Oil drilling, navigational sonars and ship engines have shown to frighten, and confuse dolphins. Noise pollution may cause marine mammals to beach themselves and may also force dolphins to move away from their normal feeding and breeding grounds.

Like Human Speech

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

A dolphin’s complex array of whistling communication techniques has been compared to human speech by some scientists. As a species, dolphins have an incredible sense of hearing and rely largely on sound to navigate the ocean, locate food, maintain awareness of threats, keep track of their children and pod members and communicate to one another.

Robbed of a Normal Life

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Whistling is also produced for a dolphins’ desire to mate, to alert others when there is nearby danger, to socialize with one another, and to let their pod know that they have found food nearby. Their survival depends on this method of communication, without it, they will be robbed of a normal underwater life.

Navigation Tool

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

Each dolphin has their own unique sound. They can communicate in a slightly different pitch so that other pod members know which dolphin in the group is speaking and to make it easier for pod members to keep track of each others location. While sound plays a similar role on land it can be even more important for survival in the ocean.

A Rising Concern

Dolphin Communication Story
  NASA / Wikipedia

The study reveals that while dolphins have an excellent sense of hearing, their ability to listen to sounds are drastically decreased by man-made ambient noises from submarines, loud boat engines, explosives and low flying aircraft. These man made noises are all becoming more and more common leaving marine biologists and researchers with concern in regards to the dolphins ability to survive in its environment.

Leave Water to Alleviate Stress

Dolphin Communication Story
  Aude Steiner / Wikipedia

These sounds can make it difficult for dolphins to communicate with one another, accurately locate food, and navigate a sometimes pitch-black ocean. Aside from these possible issues, other concerns include the possibility of dolphins beaching themselves due to difficulty navigating the ocean. Their reluctance to be in the water is due to the distress from the human-induced noise.

Worst Damage

Dolphin Communication Story
  Claudia14 / pixabay.com

The worst of its effects are the permanent damage to hearing and hemorrhaging near the dolphins ear and brain tissue. This becomes possible from developing decompression sickness from raising to the surface too quickly and difficulty locating food because of ambient interruption during the use of echolocation.

Other Marine Life Effected

Dolphin Communication Story
  Anagounagi / Wikipedia

Their findings echo another study also published this week. Japanese scientists found that humpback whales around the country’s Ogasawara Islands are reducing their famous whale songs in response to noise caused by passing ships. And, as the site Inverse notes, a 2016 study on orcas also found that sound from ships hindered their ability to communicate.

What Can We Do?

Dolphin Communication Story
  shutterstock.com

“We need to be working to engineer quieter boats,” said Bailey. The sound from the ships that were recorded had decibel levels up to 130, just like being near a noisy road. “We need to ask, ‘Is there a way shipping can do it that is more environmentally friendly’.” Regulations and voluntary incentives to reduce the sound from vessels, with speed limits or quieter engines, could help to decrease the effects on dolphins and other species sensitive to sound.

Gisele Bündchen Outlines Toxic Relationships, Addiction And Suicidal Thoughts In Tell-All Memoir

Some people assume that Brazilian-born actress and model, Gisele Bündchen has an enviable life. But despite being the girlfriend of heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio for five years, even winning People’s ‘Most Beautiful Couples List’ in 2004, Bündchen’s new book reveals anything but an enviable life.

Despite being a stunning model and multi-millionaire in her own right, Bündchen has suffered from mental health issues during her career, many as a result of the tremendous pressure she was under for decades due to her high profile.

Meaningful Life

  amazon.com

Having enjoyed much success as a supermodel and actress, the now 38-year-old Bündchen has issues in the background which never went away. She outlines in her new memoirs, a book entitled “Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life,” that while she was close with her family back in Brazil, she never felt settled or in a good place during her relationship with DiCaprio. But more shocking revelations lay ahead.

Getting Married

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen hoped in her heart that marrying New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would give her some peace and allow her to feel settled and live her life. But despite having everything from money to a wonderful husband, Bündchen was miserable – and then the panic attacks started. Those panic attacks would strike when the mother-of-two was least expecting it.

Feeling Bad

  shutterstock.com

In an interview Bündchen recently gave to People magazine, she spoke about how difficult life was for her over the past few years. “I had a wonderful position in my career, and I was very close to my family,” she told the magazine. “I always considered myself a positive person, so I was really beating myself up. Like, ‘Why should I be feeling this?’ I felt like I wasn’t allowed to feel bad,” she answered rhetorically.

Enclosed Spaces

  shutterstock.com

The panic attacks started following a turbulent flight in a small plane back in 2003. Since then, Bündchen would endure severe panic attacks when she was in elevators, tunnels and other enclosed spaced. This had a tremendous impact on her life and those around her, but she was unable to break free from the issues. That all led, understandably, to thoughts of bad things including suicide.

Living in Fear

  shutterstock.com

“It felt like everything in my life was going to kill me,” Bündchen explains in her book. “First it was the airplanes, then elevators. Then it was tunnels and hotels and modeling studios and cars. Now it was my own apartment.” For her, everyday life was a living hell.

Feeling Trapped

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen puts it vividly in her book, explaining to her readers: “Everything had become a cage, and I was the animal trapped inside, panting for air,” she writes. “I couldn’t see a way out, and I couldn’t stand another day of feeling this way.” It was after months of this suffering that Bündchen just assumed she might be “better off dead.” She was considering suicide by this stage and in a serious way.

Wanting Out

  shutterstock.com

For those who have suffered from panic attacks on a regular basis, life can be a terrible struggle, and sometimes one doesn’t want to continue with. “The idea swept over me then: Maybe it will be easier if I just jump. It will be all over. I can get out of this.” She also recalled how badly she wanted to go back 20 years, to do things differently with her life choices.

That Moment

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen wore her heart on her sleeve as she revealed gory details in her memoir about how desperate she felt some days. “When I think back on that moment, and that 23-year-old girl, I want to cry. I want to tell her that everything will be all right, that she hasn’t even begun to live her life,” she wrote. “But in that moment, the only answer seemed to be to jump.” Thankfully, Bündchen had the peace of mind and presence to seek professional help before things spiraled further.

Drugs Don’t Work

  shutterstock.com

While Bündchen gave the high doses of Xanax prescribed by her doctors a whirl, she was well aware that such medication was no long-term solution for her issues. She remained on the medication for a while, but it wasn’t until she embarked on a serious lifestyle overhaul that things got better. She started by stopping smoking and excessive drinking, as well as drinking too much coffee.

Bad Habits

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen was frank and candid about her trials and tribulations with alcohol and caffeine. “I had been smoking cigarettes, drinking a bottle of wine and three mocha frappuccinos every day, and I gave up everything in one day,” she revealed to People. “I thought, ‘If this stuff is in any way the cause of this pain in my life, it’s gotta go.'” And go it did, as Bündchen went through a remarkable life change.

Leaving Leo

  shutterstock.com

Reports were all over the media as far back as 2009 regarding Bündchen’s rocky relationship with DiCaprio. Vanity Fair reported that their relationship “was fraught with dramas that included an eight-month breakup, a reconciliation, and recurring reports of Gisele’s exasperation at Leo’s womanizing ways.” When it dawned on her that she was alone in her soul-searching, she did the right thing and ended the relationship with Leo.

Not Suited

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen said it best during that Vanity Fair interview when she said: “We were very young, and we grew together in a lot of ways,” she said. “We were just not meant to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but I respect him enormously, and I wish him nothing but the best.” But Bündchen claims her relationship with Brady was night and day to how things were with Leo. The couple married in 2009 and had two children, Benjamin and Vivian.

More Challenges

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen explained in her new book that she faced an even bigger challenge than previous ones when Brady told her just two months into their relationship that his ex, Bridget Moynahan was having Tom’s baby. Once again, Bündchen’s world had been turned upside down, and she was in turmoil.

Full Support

  shutterstock.com

Despite the impact Brady’s baby with his ex had on her, Bündchen explained in her book that she realized fast that Brady would need her support. “I wanted to be there for Jack and Tom, and do whatever I could to create stability in their lives, and help them to have a close relationship,” she wrote. But Brady’s son John, who now goes by the name of Jack, was a “blessing in disguise” for the couple. As Bündchen wrote that little Jack Brady helped her “heart expand in ways I didn’t know was possible.”

That Flight

  youtube.com/abcnews

Bündchen gave another interview more recently to Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts. In that interview, she explained how the panic attacks had all started. “It started all in a little plane. I was in Costa Rica, and I was flying a six-seater plane, and the plane started shaking like a little leaf. I was, like, completely a sense of powerless, you know?” she asked. But that plane ride led Bündchen down a desperate path, as she explained further.

Shrinking World

  shutterstock.com

“So it started with a little plane ride, but then it became tunnels, subways, elevators,” the model explained. “I lived on the ninth floor in an apartment, and I would go up nine floors of stairs because I was scared that I would suffocate. It was crazy. My world just kept getting smaller and smaller.” Thankfully, the brave life changes Bündchen made had a positive impact on her, her career and her family.

Life Changes

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen explained in the AM interview that she changed her lifestyle drastically and virtually overnight. With the guidance of doctors, she changed her diet completely and began attending regular yoga and meditation classes. According to Bündchen, the culmination of the new diet and other measures helped her to all but kick the panic attacks once and for all.

Deep Appreciation

  shutterstock.com

Bündchen spoke at length, choking up at points, about the deep appreciation and love she feels for her husband. She spoke about how Brady remained calm and helped her. “He’s very calm and very centered, and I feel like I’m very emotional and very changeable,” she said. “What I learned from him is to kind of like, take a breath.”

Moving On

  shutterstock.com

For Bündchen, the most important thing is to move on in life and never to look back. She even spoke about how hard it was to write some of the things in her memoir as they brought back such bad memories. “The panic attacks were a very tough thing because I haven’t experienced anxiety since then when I changed my diet and started meditating,’ she explained.

Life Lessons

  youtube.com/abcnews

Bündchen summed it up best when she concluded: “Either you learn through experiencing something or you learn vicariously through other people … I mean, now I’m 38 and looking back, and my perspective is so different, but at the time, you don’t have the maturity, you don’t have the experience.” Gisele Bündchen is an example of a person who learned from their mistakes and overcame unthinkable challenges thanks to honesty and some self-control.

Group Of Japanese ‘Skilled Veterans’ Put Their Lives On The Line For Future Generations

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story

In March of 2011, an earthquake occurred just off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku, Japan. The quake, which had a magnitude of 9.1, was one of the four largest ever measured and was felt as far away as the coast of the United States. It also caused a 133-foot tidal wave that wreaked havoc along the Japanese coast, causing the deaths of 15,896 people.

The quake also severely damaged the cooling system and power at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, spilling radiation into the area and radioactive material into the ocean. Today, seven years later, a group of unexpected volunteers is working to clean up and prevent the nuclear problem from getting any worse.

Nondescript Committee

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  www.bbc.com

Our story begins in a fairly nondescript office building, like so many others in this part of the world. Three older folks, all of them long retired from their previous jobs, have taken up a new vocation in this cramped office. Computers and cell phones sound alerts all around, and the gathered committee works to put out literal fires.

Damage Control

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Digital Globe / Wikipedia

These three retirees are the leaders of what amounts to a 250-person team whose main goal is defusing one of the worst nuclear meltdowns in history. The damage dealt to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has resulted in potentially irreparable damage to the area around the plant, the oceans in the area, and if things aren’t fixed, the food chain itself.

Meltdown

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  naturalflow / Flickr

The loss of power led to insufficient cooling, which in turn led to three nuclear meltdowns, as well as hydrogen-air explosions, and ultimately the release of radioactive material into the nearby area. People were evacuated from the area, albeit slowly, and most have not been able to return since the incident.

Defusing The Tsunami

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  IAEA Imagebank / Wikipedia

To say that the disaster at the Fukushima plant was a ticking time-bomb is a bit of an understatement. The long-term effects of radioactive water seeping into the nearby groundwater and the eking its way into our food chain will ultimately mean a potential increase in cancer and birth defects the world over. However, some folks have come up with a plan of sorts.

Ending The Crisis

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  www.bbc.com

72-year-old Yasuteru Yamada is the de-facto leader of the senior-run group, the Skilled Veterans Corps. Their goal is to use their glut of free time in retirement to help end the crisis at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. It’s a noble course of action to take, though more complex than some readers might realize at first glance.

Retirees

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  shutterstock.com

The group began with a few like-minded retirees like Yamada and grew exponentially. To join, one must be retired, age 60 or older, and ready to work at the radiation-contaminated power plant. The reason for this is actually remarkably simple, although a bit morbid, and it involves the 1,000 younger workers currently at the plant.

The Reason

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  shutterstock.com

The cells of an older person’s body divide more slowly than those inside a younger individual. This essentially means that not only are elderly people less sensitive to radiation, it will also affect them less quickly over time. The way Yamada and his friends see it, they should be the ones to work there instead of the younger generation.

Engineer And Survivor

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Wolfgang Burggraf / Wikipedia

Yamada himself is a former engineer for Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. He’s an educated man, a man who has had decades of experience in industrial environments and in a leadership position. He also happens to be a cancer survivor himself, so he knows what it’s like to be younger and facing that grim prognosis.

Cancerous Situation

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  shutterstock.com

The reality of the situation has not been lost on the roughly 1,000 workers still doing their job in the Fukushima plant. Exposure to nuclear radiation will inevitably cause some sort of cancer or at least radiation poisoning. That will happen. Unfortunately, many of those workers also understand that if something isn’t done now, the problem will become worse and more widespread.

Suicide Corps

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Ogiyoshisan / Wikipedia

Goshi Hosono, the prime minister’s special advisor to the nuclear crisis, has publicly called the Skilled Veterans the “Suicide Corps” but that’s really a bit of a misnomer as far as Yamada is concerned. He and his fellow retirees value their own lives as much as anyone, but they also want to make the best of the few years they have left by helping to keep future generations safe.

Doing Something

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Abasaa / Wikipedia

Another member of the team, 65-year-old Masaaki Takahashi, does not appreciate the nickname. Nor does he appreciate how Hosono and his team rebuffed their offer to help restaff the nuclear plant. “We’re doing nothing special. I simply think I have to do something and I can’t allow just young people to do this,” Takahashi explained to CNN

Many to Help

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  April Quintanilla / Wikipedia

Takahashi’s task at the Skilled Veterans is to keep track of the hundreds of names of donors and volunteers looking to help their efforts. His current list contains the names of more than 900 donors and an additional 250 able-bodied retirees. Yet though they are more than willing to enter the area around Fukushima to aid in the repairs, they are faced with some serious red tape.

Refusing Help

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  tanislau Palaukou / shutterstock.com

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), who owns the nuclear plant, has been nothing but gracious about the Skilled Veteran’s offer but told them that they currently have more than enough workers in place to control the crisis. The fact remains that while those workers are younger, they have so much more living to do.

Taking Responsibility

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  TK Kurikawa / shutterstock.com

69-year-old Kazuko Sasaki is a co-founder of the group for a number of personal reasons. She wants to work at the plant because she believes that her generation were the ones who promoted the idea of nuclear power in the first place. For Sasaki, working to fix the broken problem is about taking responsibility for her whole generation.

Bearing the Burden

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story

Like Yamada and Takahashi, Sasaki is pragmatic about the risks she and her elderly brethren are willing to take to protect the younger generation. She explained how a 30-year-old exposed to such radiation might develop cancer in their 40s but someone her age might ultimately get cancer anyway. So what’s the harm in accepting the burden for others?

Accepting Death

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story

Sasaki and her fellow Skilled Veterans are ready to accept death as an old friend. “When we were younger, we never thought of death,” Sasaki explains. “But death becomes familiar as we get older. We have a feeling that death is waiting for us. This doesn’t mean I want to die. But we become less afraid of death, as we get older.”

No Dice

Despite TEPCO’s assurances that they have “plenty of workers,” there are many Japanese citizens who would rather find a job elsewhere than risk his or his family’s safety. Take for instance Hikaru Tagawa, a former temporary worker who lived only a few miles away from the now unlivable evacuation zone.

Won’t Go Back

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Nishi81 / shutterstock.com

“Nothing can make me go back to work there,” Tagawa told CNN. Mr. Tagawa has two young children and the levels of radiation are too dangerous for him to risk. It is precisely because of young families like the Tagawas that the senior generation has come forward to help. As far as Yamada is concerned, stepping forward to help is the better alternative to staying behind to watch.

Practical Solution

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story
  Nishi81 / shutterstock.com

Yamada has since met with Hosono and it looks like the prime minister’s initial desire to prevent them from helping has been replaced by the necessity to take them up on their offer. The solution is far more practical than continuing to risk young Japanese lives. Especially since they’re more than willing.

They Need Us

Japanese Volunteer Fukushima Story

“They need us … Most Japanese want to help out any way they can,” Yamada explained. Still, he denies the comparison that he and his peers are suicidal or kamikazes. We are not kamikaze. The kamikaze were something strange, no risk management there. They were going to die. But we are going to come back. We have to work but never die.”

Dying Town Rebuilt By Immigration Becomes Focal Point Of National Debate In Italy

Being a mayor of a town, especially one in decline economically and agriculturally, has got to be burdensome. We can’t begin to describe how it must feel to see the place you love in decline, let alone prescribe a remedy to fix the situation.

For the mayor of one small Italian village, it meant thinking outside the box and going against the grain of his country as a whole. But he would learn that for all the good it did, there would be some unwanted consequences…

Ancient Village

Riace Story
  Marcuscalabresus / Wikipedia

Riace was a hilltop village on Italy’s south coast that had been there since the medieval times. It had been there through the best and worst of hundreds of years of history but was threatened with extinction in the past couple of decades. The village was being drained as its residents moved away.

Financial Opportunities

Riace Story
  Google Maps

During the economic boom of the ‘90s, people were moving to northern Italy or out of the country for better opportunities. By the turn of the century, Riace was on the verge of being a ghost town. There were many derelict houses and the local school was just a handful of students away from shuttering its doors.

Double Trouble

Riace Story
  shutterstock.com

At the same time, the village’s mayor Domenico Lucano saw another problem each day when he read the headlines. Some refugees who came to Italy were having a hard time getting back on their feet after relocating. To him, the twin problems had a single solution.

Simple Solution

Riace Story
  Google Maps

“There were people without a house here, and there were houses without people here,” Domenico said. “It’s simple.” He pitched an idea to the Italian government and they agreed to help with what he saw as an elegant solution to both problems: allow the refugees to live in the abandoned homes and provide them with job training.

Working As Planned

Riace Story

Over the course of the next decade and a half, thousands of immigrants passed through Riace, most of them staying temporarily until they took newly acquired job skills to work in other parts of Italy. But about 500 of them stayed as well, bringing the village’s population up to roughly 2,300 people.

Undeniable Success

Riace Story
  Google Maps

Many in the town were skeptical of the project at first but it was hard to deny the much needed benefits it brought to the town. The system helped generate jobs for locals, mostly as teachers and translators. The added population helped a lot as well, allowing a handful of shops and the town’s one bar to reopen.

Message of Hope

Riace Story
  Carlo Troiano / Wikipedia

“The multiculturalism, the variety of skills and personal stories which people have brought to Riace have revolutionized what was becoming a ghost town,” Domenico said. “What I hope from this story is to spread a message of humanity, hope and anti-racism to the world. Others should see how the welcoming of migrants is possible but also beneficial to the host communities.”

A New Life

Riace Story
  Google Maps

“I don’t feel like a foreigner or a stranger here in Riace,” says Rawda, a woman who came from Somalia with her husband and daughter in 2011. “This is a new life for our family. My daughters couldn’t go to school in Somalia. Now I’m feeling really lucky, I can give my children a new future. They’ll grow up to be world citizens.” But the success story wouldn’t last forever.

Change of Opinion

Riace Story
  Senato della Repubblica / Wikipedia

In the 2010s, the attitude toward immigrants shifted in Italy. Europe was experiencing a migrant crisis, while at the same time, the Italian government shifted more toward the right. One of the politicians who came into office in 2018 was Matteo Salvini, who was the deputy prime minister and minister of the interior.

Strong Opponent

Riace Story
  shutterstock.com

Salvini was vehemently against the immigration program that Riace had set up with the previous Italian government and against Mayor Lucano as a result of it. The Italian government arrested Domenico, alleging that he had abused government funds and helped to facilitate marriages of convenience for immigrants to get citizenship. Salvini said the arrest showed that their government had “declared war” on the immigration business.

Take That, Do-Gooders

Riace Story
Ministry of the Interior / Wikipedia

As part of that war Salvini and his right-wing League Party was waging, he also pledged to drastically cut funds for all migrant reception and integration services. He then tweeted out “Let’s see what all the other do-gooders who want to fill Italy with immigrants will say now.”

Get Out

  Marcuscalabresus / Wikipedia

The interior ministry also said that all migrants living in the town of Riace would be transferred away and put into other migrant centers or, if they chose to stay in the village, would no longer “benefit from the reception system.” Such a move would be a devastating blow to the town that was just coming out of its decline.

‘Absurd And Unjustified’

Riace Story
Marta, Lorenza e Vincenzo Iaconianni / Wikipedia

Domenico said in a statement that the interior ministry is “out to destroy us,” vowing to appeal the transfers. Mario Oliverio, the president of the region in which Riace resides, said the move was “absurd and unjustified,” adding “I hope the objective behind the decision isn’t to stop a reception project that has been extremely positive, appreciated, and recognized internationally.

‘Irregularities’

Riace Story
  Google Maps

As for the charges against the mayor, it turned out there was nothing behind the allegations of “funding irregularities.” Investigators found that while the management of funds may have been less than orderly, there was no evidence that any money at all had been misappropriated.

Some Truth

Riace Story
  shutterstock.com

But as for the accusations that he had facilitated in the arrangement of marriages, there appeared to be a stronger case against Domenico. Through wire-tapping his phone, prosecutors said that they recorded at least one conversation where the mayor seemed to suggest marriage as a solution to a woman’s immigration woes.

‘The Only Way’

Riace Story
  Marcuscalabresus / Wikipedia

According to prosecutors Domenico had spoken with a Nigerian woman who had been denied residence three times previously. He apparently said to her that marrying an Italian citizen was “the only way forward.” There were other recordings of him referring to similar weddings in the past, as well as suggesting he could use his powers as mayor to quickly arrange a ceremony.

Backlash

Riace Story
  Presidenza della Repubblica / Wikipedia

While it wasn’t exactly clear what would happen to the mayor, the interior ministry’s actions were generating a lot of anger and frustration with some Italians. Former prime minister Enrico Letta was among them, tweeting: “For shame. This is not Italy!”

Wrong Priorities

Riace Story
  Marcuscalabresus / Wikipedia

“Salvini’s priorities in Calabria are to send away families and children and dismantle a model of integration that has worked and is known around the world,” said Laura Boldrini, a former speaker of parliament.

Other Issues

Riace Story
  shutterstock.com

Some other critics pointed out other problems with the priorities of the interior ministry. Considering Calabria is where the mafia exerts its strongest influence, they felt it absurd that a crackdown on immigrants was their focus.

Oppressing The Oppressed

Riace Story
  Terrasque / Wikipedia

Luigi de Magistris, who was the mayor of Naples and had worked in Calabria as a prosecutor for nine years was among those critics. “If [Mayor] Lucano is the danger in Calabria, it means the mafia is winning,” he said. “If the government decides to deport the oppressed, fragile victims of oppressors from the world’s regimes, then Riace must become a stronghold of the resistance.”

Jehovah’s Witness Elders Use First Amendment to Hide Abuse

$

As well as being known for showing up at people’s front doors uninvited to spread their version of the word of God, Jehovah’s Witnesses are renowned for being one of the world’s most insular religions. Decades of controversy have followed Jehovah’s Witnesses, but new allegations cannot be swept under the carpet any longer.

A substantial examination of thousands of documents has revealed systematic abuse of children at the hands of Jehovah Witness clergy members. The years of abuse and the terrible suffering of hundreds of minors has now surfaced, but no one thought a church would use the sacred First Amendment as an excuse for their behavior.

Numerous Allegations

  Screenshot / Revealnews.org

The numerous allegations against the church clergy are heavy and take some unwrapping to understand. But even if one does understand them, one cannot fathom how child abuse could have been allowed to continue for so long, and then whitewashed as if it never even happened. We start by trying to unravel the confidential committees, set up to handle child abuse allegations internally.

Confidential Committees

  shutterstock.com

According to the religion’s parent organization, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, directives were issued on at least 10 disturbing memos dating back to 1989. Even though those memos were anonymously written, they were approved by the organization’s governing body. A more recent memo compelled members to form “confidential committees to handle potential criminal matters internally,” according to Reveal News.

Covering Up

  documentcloud.org

That anonymous memo speaks for itself, as elders are asked to form committees to keep the allegations away from law enforcement. “In some cases, the elders will form a judicial committee to handle the alleged wrongdoing that may also constitute a violation of criminal law (e.g., murder, rape, child abuse, fraud, theft, assault),” one directive stipulates. “Generally, the elders should not delay the judicial committee process, but strict confidentiality must be maintained to avoid unnecessary entanglement with secular authorities who may be conducting a criminal investigation of the matter.”

Not Predators

  shutterstock.com

Despite the fact that the Watchtower has the final say over who is guilty of child abuse and who is not, an internal memo noted that: “Not every individual who has sexually abused a child in the past is considered a ‘predator.’ The (Watchtower), not the local body of elders, determines whether an individual who has sexually abused children in the past will be considered a ‘predator.'”

Massive Following

  Screenshot / Revealnews.org

With more than eight million members globally, Jehovah’s Witnesses preaches that Armageddon will come soon and when it does, the world will be released from Satan’s grip. In the U.S. alone, Jehovah’s Witnesses operate more than 14,000 churches and have a following of roughly a million faithful members. But the sex abuse allegations are proving difficult to hide, mainly due to overwhelming evidence.

First Amendment

  shutterstock.com

Having successfully used and abused the First Amendment to avoid military service or even to salute the American flag, Jehovah’s Witnesses collected child sexual abuse data and kept it a secret for years. They have used their First Amendment rights to keep the sensitive and damning information away from law enforcement, but it was only a matter of time before it came out.

Jose Lopez

  abc10news / youtube

Jose Lopez was molested by Jehovah Witnesses clergy when he was just seven years old. His predator was an elder who operated within the San Diego congregation where Lopez was a member. It took him decades to get justice for what happened to him, and he was finally awarded a massive $13.5 million by the judge who heard his case. But this case revealed some more damning information about the church.

Full Knowledge

  abc10news / youtube

It’s not as if the elders of the church had no idea what was going on. To the contrary, systemic abuse of children was happening right under their noses, and they knew it. The Lopez case was a landmark one as it forced the church into a rare submission they would rather not have made. It was discovered that the organization has thousands of internal documents, scanned into computers, which speak of the horrific abuse of children.

More Excuses

  Screenshot / Revealnews.org

At the trial, a senior official from the Jehovah’s Witnesses headquarters, Richard Ashe, told Lopez’s attorney, Irwin Zalkin, some interesting but incriminating information. He explained that the thousands of documents were electronically scanned into their computers on a Microsoft SharePoint database. But, according to Ashe, it was virtually impossible to extract them from the system.

Overwhelming Information

  shutterstock.com

“Honestly, Mr. Zalkin, the efforts that we’ve made up to this point [are] just trying to figure out how on earth we could ever do that in our filing system,” Ashe said. “You’re talking about 14,000 congregations and over 3 million documents that have been scanned, and that would have to be searched. … It would take years to do that.” But Zalkin consulted a software expert who even testified that this was a lie and that the documents could be found using a simple search button.

Promoting Abusers

  abc10news / youtube

The story gets even worse as known child abusers were even promoted to higher positions within the church despite their heinous crimes. One such predator, Gonzalo Campos, who assaulted many children, was promoted to ministerial servant and then became an elder a few years later. When people complained directly to the elders about Campos, they were told that too much time had passed since the abuse and that nothing could be done.

Admitting Guilt

  Screenshot / Revealnews.org

When Zalkin asked Ashe directly in court whether Watchtower instructed elders to keep child abuse allegations private he answered in the affirmative. And when Watchtower was asked to comment on the case, they said, “We continue to educate parents and provide them with valuable tools to help them educate and protect their children.”

Mouths Shut

  Zalkin.com

Zalkin, who has been filing lawsuits against Jehovah’s Witnesses across the U.S. for years, explained that the pattern is clear as day. “Keep your mouth shut. Don’t go to law enforcement,” he said. “‘You come to us first. Don’t tell anybody. … You don’t warn parents in the congregation. We’ll decide what happens here.’ That’s their policy.” But Lopez’s case was anything but isolated.

Vermont Case

  mynbc5.com

Another case included two sisters who claimed they were both sexually molested by members of their congregation when they were just four years old. They said that when they reported the abuse to the church elders, they were accused of being liars. It was hard for them to prove their serious allegations so many years later and that’s why only a fraction of the abuse cases can be taken to court.

Oregon Case

  shutterstock.com

In another case out of Oregon, two former Jehovah’s Witnesses said they sued Watchtower as well as their local church. Their claim was similar, alleging that elders had kept quiet about the abuse these girls had suffered at the church. But they join a long list of cases brought against Watchtower since 2012 in Connecticut, Florida, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, and other states.

Spiritual Guidance

  shutterstock.com

Despite claims of offering spiritual guidance, Watchtower seems more interested in covering their backs and those of sexual predators. An internal memo more or less proves that point. “Often the peace, unity, and spiritual well-being of the congregation are at stake,” a Watchtower memo reads. “Improper use of the tongue by an elder can result in serious legal problems for the individual, the congregation, and even the Society.”

Certain Complications

  shutterstock.com

The same memo becomes even more sickening as it goes along, with the church condemning what they call “worldly persons.” “Worldly persons are quick to resort to lawsuits if they feel their ‘rights’ have been violated,” states the document. “Substantial monetary damages could be assessed against the elders or congregation. In some cases where the authorities are involved, certain complications could lead to a fine or imprisonment.” And that just about says it all about Watchtower’s take on the whole matter.

Gauging Exposure

  shutterstock.com

The cover-up methods are fairly transparent and reek of internal meddling. One memo lists 11 questions that need to be answered in each abuse case. They include the name of the abuser and victim as well as how many times the alleged abuse occurred. But this is all against the backdrop of trying to gauge the perpetrator’s risk of exposure. “How is he viewed in the community and by the authorities? Has he lived down any notoriety in the community? Are members of the congregation aware of what took place?” It reads.

Justice Served

  shutterstock.com

San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Lewis wasn’t having any of it and didn’t like the way the church thought it could hide behind the First Amendment. During the Lopez trial when Watchtower refused to provide lists of perpetrators, Judge Lewis disqualified their defense in totality. “Watchtower’s actions or omissions were ‘reprehensible.’ I think ‘disgraceful’ may be synonymous with ‘reprehensible,’ but I think ‘disgraceful’ doesn’t say enough about it,” Lewis wrote in her decision.

Sending a Message

  shutterstock.com

Lewis added that: “The award of punitive damages against them will hopefully send a message to Watchtower and its managing agents, the governing body of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, that their handling of sex abuse cases within their congregation was reckless.” It now remains to be seen how many more victims will come forward to expose these disgraceful acts and what kind of defense the Jehovah’s Witnesses will bring now that their methods have been exposed.

Extramarital Affair Uncovered After Woman Paralyzed In Freak Accident Sues Bed Company

Most people don’t think twice about jumping into their bed and getting comfy, especially after a long day at work. A person’s bed is usually both their haven and sanctuary – emphasis on the “usually.”

As such, Claire Busby learned the hard way when she was catapulted from her bed while she was having sex with her partner. The accident was so serious that Busby ended up paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life. Then the legal proceedings began.

One of Five

  gofundme.com

Busby had heard great things about the Berkshire Bed Company that came highly recommended to her. The 46-year-old mother from Maidenhead, Berks in the U.K., ordered five new beds from the company when she renovated her home. The beds were comfortable enough, and Busby and her family had no complaints about them at all. Then, the most curious thing happened which would change Busby’s life forever.

Switch Positions

  shutterstock.com

We all do it, although some people are more embarrassed about it than others. However, on this particular night, Busby was in her bed with a male partner, and the two were having sex. Busby explained that she was on her knees at one point but then swung her legs back under her body to change position. It was at that point that she was catapulted by the defective bed into the air then onto the floor.

Falling Off

  shutterstock.com

As soon as Busby changed position, along with her partner, John Marshall, the bed allegedly gave way, and she fell off the end, landing dangerously on her head. In court, Busby explained to Judge Barry Cotter: “I was positioned kneeling over him,” she said. “I was kneeling over him, and my right hand was touching him, maybe my left hand was touching his leg. I was half way down the bed,” she explained.

Body Snapped

  shutterstock.com

Busby explained further: “I spun around, I put my hand down and then I felt like I was catapulted off the back of the bed,” she told the court. “My head hit the floor, I fell to the side, and then I heard like a spring in my body snap.” According to her, the two halves of the divan bed which made up the base were not fastened together properly, nor were the two “gliders” or feet. This caused a height difference in the bed, according to a report in The Guardian.

Expecting Support

  byromstreet.com

Busby’s attorney, Winston Hunter, told the court that his client had reasonably expected her bed to support her weight as it had done since she bought it. However, he explained, when she laid back the bed gave way, leaving Busby falling “backward and downwards.” Hunter explained in more detail that the bed was faulty and that is why his client is now paralyzed.

Partially Unsupported

  shutterstock.com

Hunter explained to the judge: “It is the claimant’s case that the point at which she left the bed is precisely the location where the different height of the two divans was at its maximum.” He said. “It represented the area where the mattress was most likely to ‘fall away’ due to the fact that it was partially unsupported.” Even though Hunter accepted that it was a freak accident, he still believes there is room for legal recourse.

Firm’s Fault

  shutterstock.com

Hunter said that while he “accepted that the particular circumstances of the accident are unusual,” he also felt that there had been “some foresight of some loss of balance in the use of the bed.” That’s why it’s his contention that the bed makers are liable and should be brought to justice. However, the company denies any liability.

Not Guilty

  Google Maps

The Berkshire Bed Company’s – trading as “Beds Are Uzzz,” (pictured) – defense rests with the fact that they claim the bed was properly installed and fitted at the time of delivery. They also contend that even if the two gliders were missing at the time of the accident, this would have no impact on the bed losing balance and catapulting Ms. Busby into the air. The company’s defense team then had their time in court to offer their side.

Losing Balance

  39essex.com

As Neil Block said for the defense: “It is overwhelmingly likely that, whatever her actions, they were too close to the edge of the bed and she simply lost balance and toppled backward.” That claim is not unreasonable and as freak accidents can happen anywhere at any time the company feels that they cannot be held responsible for what happened to one of their customers.

New Love

  shutterstock.com

The court documents showed that Mr. Marshall had been married to his wife Susan for more than 20 years. However, they had been officially divorced just a few days before the tragic incident took place with Busby. The High Court heard how Marshall met Busby during a trip to Spain in the month of the accident and that the pair had kept in contact following their return to the U.K.

No Cheating

  shutterstock.com

When Marshall spoke in court under cross-examination, he was keen to confirm that he had never cheated on his wife of 20 years, and that when the incident happened with Busby, he was officially divorced from his wife. Things only moved to the next level between Busby and Marshall after they attended the Chelsea Flower Show in London in May, according to court documents.

May to August

  shutterstock.com

Marshall said in court: “When that incident happened we were separated, I was not with Susan at the time and I want to make that very clear. Susan and I separated in May, and the incident happened in August.” He added, “All this is dragging things up unnecessarily, my life is bad enough and so is Claire’s.” But no one is particularly concerned with the details of his divorce, rather the circumstances that lead to the tragic injury of Claire Busby.

Telling Lies

  www.thetimes.co.uk

There was some controversy though in court as the questioning turned to Marshall’s actions at the time. While Marshall’s lawyer, Tony Caplin, also said the relationship started after his client was divorced, the accident may have exposed the fact that the two were together while Marshall was still married to and living with his wife. But there was more to the story than met the eye.

Disabled Caregiver

  facebook.com

Even though Marshall claimed he was leaving his family home in Alloa, Scotland to become Busby’s full-time carer, after just three weeks he left her, claiming he wasn’t cut out to be a caregiver at all. A friend said, according to Mail Online: “It wasn’t only Claire Busby’s life that was ruined that day, the fall-out from that incident devastated a family.” So was Marshall telling lies?

Wife Devastated

  shutterstock.com

The friend, who refused to be named, added that “When Claire fell off the bed and broke her back John said he was moving down to Surrey to look after her, which left Sue very upset.” And when Susan was asked whether she was still married to her husband at the time of the affair, she claimed that she was. But that would mean that Marshall was lying in court under oath, and that complicated this difficult case even further.

Still Married

  shutterstock.com

According to Susan Marshall, she was very much still married to her husband at the time when he had the affair with Busby. When asked if she was still married to her husband at that time Susan replied, “Yes, but it has nothing to do with me now. It did then, but it’s in the past. The case has dragged up a lot of things that we were trying to forget, and it’s been very hard and very stressful.”

Sequence of Events

  shutterstock.com

In a statement to the High Court, Marshall, who is now married to a different woman who is his third wife, explained that he watched Busby roll back off the bed in slow motion. “I didn’t see how she landed and at first I laughed, not realizing that she had hurt herself,” he explained. “I was expecting her to get up and when she didn’t I laughed and said ‘get up’, but she said that she had hurt herself.”

No Feeling

  shutterstock.com

Marshall explained that when he got up to look over the end of the bed, he saw Busby laying there on her side with her arm underneath her. He said he assumed she had just banged her arm or something. However, “She said she could not feel her arms and legs, I thought she was joking, and I laughed. She told me again that she had hurt herself and to call an ambulance.” It was at that point that Marshall called the emergency services.

Serious Injury

  shutterstock.com

Despite the more controversial issues of the circumstances surrounding this terrible freak accident, as a result of being catapulted from the bed, Ms. Busby suffered a serious spinal injury which has left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life. The fact she has had to relive her personal sex life before the High Court simply makes matters even worse for her.

Unfortunate Case

  Public Access

This bizarre case is disturbing on many levels although people feel that a bed company cannot be blamed and then prosecuted for a freak accident that occurred during a sexual encounter. Although the tragic reality is that Ms. Busby may never walk again, many feel the specifics of the assembly of her bed cannot be accountable for the accident that took place on that fateful night. Ultimately, it will be for the High Court in London to decide whether or not the company will need to pay compensation in the amount of just over $1 million.

Judges In ‘Kids For Cash’ Abuse Scandal Jailed After Sending Thousands Behind Bars For Minor Offenses

Decisions made in our old judicial system are founded on the wisdom of the Constitution, and meant to be guided by fair and unbiased judges and juries of our peers. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

Believed to be the largest judicial corruption scandal in our history, two Pennsylvania judges pocketed millions from the developer of juvenile detention facilities, where they were sending thousands of kids to cockroach-infested jail cells for minor infractions.

Typical Teenagers

  twitter.com / edkenzwildandfree.com / twitter.com

Hillary Transue, 14, created a false, comedic Myspace page about her school’s vice principal. Justin Bodnar, 12, use profanity towards another student’s mother. Ed Kenzakoski, 17, did nothing at all. But, even though these antics caused little to no damage, it  didn’t matter.

Go to Court

  shutterstock.com

All three juveniles from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania met the same fate for their minor infractions. They were forced to attend court with their parents. According to these children and their parents, they were coerced by police to waive their right to legal counsel.

Busted

  shutterstock.com

Philip Swartley was at a sleepover at his friend’s house when he ran into a bit of trouble. The eighth-grader had been walking around the neighborhood checking for unlocked cars so he could swipe change. He was busted by the cops.

Severe Punishment

  shutterstock.com

His family expected the 14 year old, who had never gotten into trouble at school, yet alone with the police, would be given community service, since the money he had taken only amounted to the price of the chips and soda the teenagers wanted to buy. No one anticipated that the boy would appear handcuffed in a courtroom before being sentenced to nine months at a boarding school away from his family.

Detention Camp

  pacast.com

Hillary Transue had a harassment charged filed against her when she made a joke about her school’s vice-principal on MySpace. Hillary and her mother also believed she would get community service. Instead the 15 year old was shipped off to a juvenile detention camp after a trial lasting no longer than a minute.

No Legal Counsel

  shutterstock.com

Hillary’s mother panicked once she heard the sentence. She had not realized that one of the many papers she’d had to sign waived her daughter’s right to an attorney. And no one had warned them of the detrimental consequences of not being represented by a lawyer.

Lucky Break

  shutterstock.com

Laurene Transue immediately contacted a juvenile rights advocacy group in Philadelphia, who filed a petition for Hillary’s release: within a few weeks, she was set free. Hillary was lucky in that she was rescued from the detention camp quickly. Hundreds of other teenagers were not so lucky.

Thrown Into Jail

  Public Access

These kids were all brought before Judge Ciavarella and, without any warning or the chance to offer a defense, found themselves pronounced guilty, shackled to handcuffs and sentenced to months of detention. These children were trapped in the juvenile justice system for years, robbing most of them of their entire high-school experience.

Kids For Cash

  shutterstock.com

Phillip and Hillary were only two of the more than 5,000 children who appeared before Judge Ciavarella before he was busted for his involvement in one of the worst corruption scandals of all time. Judge Ciavarella and another Luzerne County judge, Michael Conahan, had accepted nearly $2.6 million in alleged kickbacks from two private for-profit juvenile facilities. In other words, the more children that were thrown into jail, the more money in the pockets of these greedy, corrupt judges. The magnitude of the violations of the children’s rights in Luzerne County turned out to be more shocking than anyone could have imagined.

Lives Destroyed

  shutterstock.com

From 2003 to 2008, the Luzerne County judicial corruption scandal destroyed the lives of more than 2,500 children and involved more than 6,000 cases. Over half of the children who appeared before Ciavarella lacked legal representation and a whopping 60 percent of these children were removed from their homes. Many of them were sent to one or both of the two facilities at the center of the corruption scandal.

Public to Private

  Public Access

The scandal began in 2002, after Conahan shut down the state-run juvenile detention center and changed it into private detention facilities. Private facilities are sometimes used by states since they are known to be more cost efficient than government run facilities. However, private detention facilities are also exempt from the inspections and audits that state facilities undergo, which allowed the “kids for cash” scheme to go on for as long as it did.

Federal Investigation

  shutterstock.com

Finally, after countless complaints from parents and numerous advocacy groups fighting for justice, a federal investigation into Ciavarella and Conahan brought to light the havoc they had caused for years. Conahan pleaded guilty to fraud, racketeering, and tax evasion. On September 23, 2011, Conahan was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison and ordered to pay 874,000 dollars in restitution.

Ciavarella would not be going down so easily. Unlike Conahan, Ciavarella did not accept a plea agreement and completely denied allegations of his involvement in the scam. Ciavarella and his family have publicly accused Conahan of lying about the scam and Ciavarella’s involvement.

Their Turn For Prison

  wnep.com

However, the jury was not buying into his story, resulting in the judge to sentence him to 28 years in prison, 10 more years than Conahan. Had he admitted to his crimes, Ciavarella may have had a lesser sentence, similar to that of Conahan. But, for the teenagers who stood before the two disgraced judges, the damage had already been done.

PTSD

When Philip Swartley was released from the facility he had been sent to, his mother reported he had become “withdrawn and depressed.” Hillary also suffered from depression and anxiety far into her college years: “I was hiding in my dorm room, sleeping for days. If I missed class it was not because I was partying. It was because I was sitting in my room eating a whole bag of Doritos.” Although Hillary eventually overcame her depression and get her life back on track, others were not so lucky.

Never The Same

  edkenzwildandfree.com

17-year old Edward Kenzakoski was never able to recover from his time spent at the juvenile facility. According to his mother, the former all-star wrestler “was just never the same. He could never recover.” In 2010, Kenzakoski committed suicide by shooting himself in his chest, a tragic effect of the downward spiral initiated by the two corrupt judges.

Mother’s Pain

  wnep.com

During Ciavarella’s trial, as his lawyer held a press conference outside the courthouse, Edward’s mother, Sandy Fonzo, who had been standing to the side, unleashed years of pain and anguish on the man she held responsible. “My kid’s not here anymore! He’s dead! Because of him!” she screamed, pointing at Ciavarella as news cameras rolled.

Another Life Ruined

  shutterstock.com

Jeff Pollins was in the same crowd awaiting to see the man who destroyed the lives of their children. His stepson was convicted by Ciavarella. “These kids are still affected by it. It’s like post traumatic stress disorder,” Pollins told the Times Leader. “Our life is ruined. It’s never going to be the same. … I’d like to see that happen to him,” he said.

A Documentary

  imdb.com

Edward’s story, along with Hillary’s and several others, was portrayed in the acclaimed documentary: Kids for Cash.” The film generated immense public interest upon its release. It highlights the devastating stories of the scandal’s real victims and the lengths people, even those who are meant to be the fairest, will go to for greed.

Justice Will Not Be Served

  shutterstock.com

Those who were sent to jail by disgraced Judge Mark Ciavarella more than a decade ago are utterly outraged that he could possibly get years knocked off his sentence. A federal judge on Monday ordered a new trial for the judge on three of his felony convictions. All of those sentenced in the “Kids for Cash” scandal are now in their 20s and 30s. Justice will not be served if the man convicted of profiting from their convictions could be out of prison sooner than expected.

Jealous Los Angeles Detective Found Guilty 26 Years After Slaying Former Lover’s Wife

Stephanie Lazarus Story

While many people who date during college end up tying the knot years later, others enjoy college romances that serve a purpose at the time, if not for the future. But sometimes, young love is a serious force to be reckoned with, especially where envy and jealousy are involved.

John Ruetten was a mechanical engineering major from San Diego who dated Stephanie Lazarus, a fellow Dykstra Hall resident and a political science major from Simi Valley, back in 1978. While the couple clicked physically, Ruetten never thought there was anything serious between the two. Years later tragedy struck, but would go unsolved for more than two decades.

Young Love

  Snapped TV Series / Oxygen

Ruetten and Lazarus had a bunch in common. During their time at the University of California at Los Angeles, the pair were avid athletes. Lazarus loved her time playing for the UCLA’s junior varsity basketball team. While Ruetten was more into his studies, he also played different sports and had a keen interest in her, even if that interest was predominantly sexual.

Freaky Behavior

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  Snapped TV Series / Oxygen

While Ruetten had a soft spot for Lazarus, he was also often confused by some of her freaky behavior. The two had great chemistry, but when she stole his clothes while he showered and took pictures of him naked while he slept, Ruetten had great cause for concern. They even met for sex on occasion after the two graduated, but when he took a job at a computer manufacturer, and she joined the police academy, the pair drifted apart with the passage of time.

Finding Love

Some years later and Ruetten met Sherri Rasmussen, a graduate of Loma Linda University and a critical care nurse. Things became pretty serious with Sherri although Ruetten was still in touch with his ex-flame Lazarus. She had been unaware that he was getting serious with another woman at the time when she threw him a surprise 25th birthday party. When she heard about his relationship with Rasmussen, Lazarus was less than thrilled.

In Love

Stephanie Lazarus Story

Lazarus was in touch with the Ruetten family since college and was considered to be a close friend. But when she wrote a letter to Ruetten’s mother in 1985, some alarm bells began to ring loudly. “I’m truly in love with John and the past year has really torn me up,” she wrote. But her journal entries from around the same time were even more worrying. “I really don’t feel like working. I found out that John is getting married,” read one entry. But Lazarus wanted closure in one way or another.

Getting Closure

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

Lazarus noted in her journal that she was “depressed” that her lover had met another woman who he was getting serious with. She went to visit him in his condo, and the two had sex to “give (Lazarus) closure.” But when Ruetten announced that he was engaged to Rasmussen, Lazarus was devastated. That didn’t stop her from remaining friends with her ex-lover though.

Showing Up

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

It was understandable that Rasmussen was upset when her fiance’s ex-girlfriend showed up at the apartment they now shared. One particular night she arrived with a pair of skis and asked Ruetten to wax them for her, despite the objections of his wife-to-be. The fact that Lazarus was dressed in flattering workout attire at the time made things even worse, even if he did convince Rasmussen that the two were “just good friends.”

Wedding Bells

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  Handout / dailymail.co.uk

While the couple married in November 1985, the new bride still felt uncomfortable about her husband’s relationship with his ex-lover. But when Lazarus visited Rasmussen at her office, telling her that things weren’t over between her and Ruetten, she also said: “If I can’t have John, no one else will.” That comment should have raised some serious red flags somewhere, but it didn’t.

Violent Crime

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

In February 1986, just a few months after the wedding, Sherri Rasmussen was found dead in the apartment she shared with her husband. Having been bitten, beaten and shot three times, the LAPD assumed this was a botched robbery gone very wrong. But the victim’s father felt that Stephanie Lazarus should have been the prime suspect as his daughter had told him more than once that she had been stalked on the street by her as well as verbally threatened.

Sick Day

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

On the morning of February 24, 1986, Ruetten left his apartment for work. His wife was due to give a motivational speech that day in the office, but she hated giving such talks. On that fateful morning, Rasmussen decided to call in sick to avoid the talk, telling her boss that she had incurred a back injury from an intense aerobics session the day before. At 9:45 a.m., a neighbor noticed that the garage door of the residence was open, but there was no car inside. Just fifteen minutes later and Ruetten would make the first of several calls to his wife to check if she was alright.

Coming Home

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

When Ruetten returned from work in the early evening, he was shocked by the scene that met him. His garage door was still open, and there was broken glass on the driveway. He also noticed that a bike he had bought his wife was missing from the garage. When he entered the residence, he found his wife dead on the living room floor with three bullet wounds in her. He noticed signs of a struggle as well as a bloody hand-print next to the panic alarm button in the home. Investigators found a bite mark on the victim’s arm which they swabbed.

Botched Burglary

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

At the time of the investigation, with no DNA samples available, the LAPD concluded that the murder was due to a burglary gone wrong. As Rasmussen was dressed in her bathrobe, it was clear she hadn’t been expecting visitors. On top of that, numerous items had been stolen from the residence including electronic equipment, the bike from the garage, the car and also the couple’s marriage license. The last item should have raised some suspicions at the time, but it didn’t.

Life Ruined

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  Snapped TV Series / Oxygen

The lead detective running the case at the time, Lyle Mayer, soon ruled out Ruetten as a suspect. After the murder, he quit his job and moved away from Los Angeles altogether to try and piece his life back together. But the victim’s parents, Nels and Loretta Rasmussen told Mayer about the ongoing harassment of their daughter at the hands of Stephanie Lazarus. For whatever reasons, the cops didn’t suspect Lazarus at the time and were convinced that the murder had been due to a failed robbery.

Cold Case

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

Despite a newspaper story about the murder some eight months after it took place, and a generous reward for information offered by the Rasmussen family, the case went cold. This was during a time when law enforcement in LA was preoccupied with gang violence and the increasingly deadly crack epidemic which had a firm hold over the city. The victim’s father even claimed that the detectives at the office were wholly unhelpful when he called them for information.

Not Convinced

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  www.murderpedia.org

The victim’s father never gave up hope of finding his daughter’s killer. He also wasn’t at all convinced that it was due to a botched burglary as his daughter was six feet tall, in great shape and very strong. The fact that Sherri had been shot at close range through a quilt to muffle the noise was even more curious, and not in line with the usual practice of home invaders. When Nels Rasmussen offered to pay for DNA testing on the evidence from the bite mark, he was told by the police that he couldn’t do it as they had no suspect.

New Investigation

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

Many years had passed since the unsolved murder, but in 2009, due to a decline in crime in Los Angeles, detectives started reopening cold cases to increase their clearance rates. When the Rasmussen file was reexamined by detectives Jim Nuttall and Pete Barba, they found it to be worth pursuing. For a start, the DNA from the bite mark on the victim belonged to a woman, and that meant that the botched burglary theory was fickle at best.

Match Found

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  Snapped TV Series / Oxygen

When detectives realized that the botched burglary had been staged to cover up some other motive for the murder, they took the DNA sample from the bite on the victim and were shocked to find it was a match with Lazarus’ DNA. The fact that she was now a high-ranking detective herself by this stage, working art fraud cases at the time, made their plan to arrest her a tricky one.

Suspect Arrested

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

When detectives working the case were certain that Lazarus was their main suspect they moved to arrest her but in a well-planned sting operation. The detectives wanted to lure her to a place where she would have to give up her gun before entering, lest she became violent at the 26-year-old allegations against her. The cops forged a plan to tell Lazarus she needed to meet them and a suspect in a lockup in the city. Lazarus was arrested and charged with the murder of Rasmussen.

In Jail

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  LAPD

Following her arrest, Lazarus was allowed to retire from the LAPD and was held in the Los Angeles County Jail. Six months passed before her bail hearing was heard by Judge Robert J. Perry who set her bail at $10 million. When her trial finally came around in 2012, amid much media attention, Lazarus was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison at the California Institution for Women in Corona.

Civil Lawsuit

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  shutterstock.com

In 2010, the Rasmussen family filed a civil lawsuit against the city and the LAPD, alleging everything from cover-ups to negligent police work as Lazarus was “one of them.” They claimed that their civil rights had been violated as well as the “intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraudulent concealment.” Nothing ever came of that civil lawsuit, and the Rasmussens dropped their charges eventually.

Feeling Relieved

Stephanie Lazarus Story
  sprocket-trials.blogspot.com

When the verdict against Lazarus was read out in court, the Rasmussen family sobbed quietly. John Taylor, the family’s attorney, told reporters: “The family is relieved that this 26-year nightmare has concluded with the positive identification of the person who killed their daughter.”

Little Boy’s Halloween Costume Sparks Outrage Across The Internet

Hitler Costume Story

Every year, the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce in Nevada puts together an exciting event which they call “Trunk or Treat.” In the past, the event has seen anywhere from 350 to 500 children, plus their parents, searching through Veterans’ Memorial Park amidst 325 cars all in search of Halloween treats.

In fact, there is only one thing that would keep a Boulder City kid out of the park on that festive Saturday: a lack of a costume. Though it was pretty late in the season, Janet Arsanian was determined not to let her son miss out. So she made him a last-minute costume. But she had no idea the backlash the seemingly-innocuous act would cause.

Trunk or Treat

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

It’s the absolute event of the season for many of Boulder City’s kids. They come out, dress up in costume, enjoy snacks, bounce houses, games, and all sorts of fun Halloween-themed activities. The kids are encouraged to trick or treat out of festively decorated car trunks. So it’s a safe, family-friendly environment even with all the fake blood around.

Last-Minute

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Janet Arsenian, a special education teacher at nearby Cortney Junior High School, didn’t want her son to miss out on the bungee jumping, rock climbing, haunted hayride, and candy even though he didn’t have a costume. So she racked her brains and put together something. It was clever, we’ll give her that, albeit a bit ill-conceived.

Costume Elements

Hitler Costume Story
  Everett Historical / shutterstock.com

The last-minute costume Janet designed consisted of brown pants, brown leather coat, a red armband emblazoned with an unabashedly Nazi-style swastika, and a tiny brush mustache, completing an unmistakable, infamous look. Yes, you read that correctly. Janet had made her middle-school-aged son an Adolf Hitler costume.

Viral Photos

Hitler Costume Story
  www.metro.co.uk

The young man got more than a few odd looks when he arrived at Trunk or Treat that day. Within moments of their arrival, people were taking pictures of the costume and posting them to social media. By the next day, the pics had gone viral and people had already begun to brand the costume as both racist and distasteful.

A Teacher

Hitler Costume Story
  www.ktnv.com

People were outraged not only that she’d had the audacity to send her son out in that particular get-up, but that she was a teacher to boot. People wondered how a special education teacher, someone who knew all-too-well the significance of tolerance and understanding, not realize the potential significance of dressing her child as Hitler and sending them to trick-or-treat?

Nazi Sympathizers

Hitler Costume Story
  www.ktnv.com

Some of her understandably harsh critics even branded Janet a so-called Nazi sympathizer and took umbrage with the fact that she was responsible for educating children. This is particularly important today, with a new brand of nationalism on the rise, and one that has been compared by some to the “national socialism” of the Nazis.

Cruel Words

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Some of the responses to the pictures of Janet’s son’s costume were downright cruel. One person wrote, “This teacher needs a lesson. Such a disgusting person, and raising a kid and teaching other kids?!” They even demeaned her intelligence and education with their replies. “Proof you can have a college education and not be terribly bright.”

Firm Denial

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Not to be bullied, Janet took to the private Boulder City Facebook group to publicly defend herself and her family. She denied that her family admired Hitler in any way, nor do they agree with what he did. All she did was make her son a last-minute Halloween costume and she was proud of it.

Proud Parent

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Janet was so proud in fact that she said as much in the post. “I’m the proud parent of the boy in the Hitler costume and my son didn’t mean to upset anyone … He needed a last-minute costume and he put that together today.” Janet’s post was eventually removed by a group moderator, but that didn’t stop her from defending her actions.

Similar Villains

Hitler Costume Story
  Denis Simonov / shutterstock.com

She compared her son dressing up as Hitler to dressing as other fictional evil characters like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger. Of course, that argument is not exactly sound, as you also don’t see a lot of folks dressing up as Josef Stalin or Pol Pot. Dressing as a slasher movie murderer and costuming as a genocidal dictator are two very different things.

Grieving Families

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

The difference between these two things lies primarily in the fact that characters like Michael Myers never actually killed anyone. His victims are imaginary and therefore have no living family members around to mourn their losses. Adolf Hitler, on the other hand, left quote a few grieving families in the wake of his misdeeds.

Holocaust Survivors

Hitler Costume Story
  praszkiewicz / shutterstock.com

It was this distinction which many of Janet’s accusers latched onto in the end. Helena Vece, a 71-year-old resident of Boulder City was particularly affected by the Hitler costume. This is because her parents had actually survived the Holocaust and were deeply traumatized by the experience.

Firsthand Account

Hitler Costume Story
  Szymon Kaczmarczyk / shutterstock.com

Though Vece hadn’t attended the Trunk or Treat event herself, she was shown the pictures of Janet’s son’s costume by her own children. “I know what my mom and dad went through,” she explained to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I know what I went through (with) them as a child, I know what their memories are.”

Extreme Offense

Hitler Costume Story
  Elaine Marie / Facebook

She added that though she was born in Germany after the war, she found the entire costume to be extremely offensive and doesn’t know why a parent might allow a child to dress like the Nazi dictator, let alone dress them that way. Vece also had an interesting comment on the nature of social media and the fact that there were two sides to this issue.

“Not a Big Deal?”

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

“I don’t understand the mentality on the social media,” Vece explained. “Some people are saying, ‘It shouldn’t be a big deal, it’s just a costume.’ No, for people that had family there and in concentration camps, this is a big deal.” Regardless of hers and so many other opinions, Janet does have some allies.

Nicest People

Hitler Costume Story
  Google Maps

Brian Scott, one of Janet’s fellow teachers at Cortney Junior High, has openly defended his colleague. He describes her as one of the best teachers he’d ever had the pleasure to work with, though he concedes that the costume might have been in bad taste. Nevertheless, he assures people that neither Janet nor her young son are Nazi sympathizers.

Possible Backlash

Hitler Costume Story
  Kirsten Searer / Twitter

Clark County School District spokeswoman Kirsten Searer has also come forward in the wake of the controversial costume. She announced that the district is well aware of the social media posts, but would not indicate whether Janet will face any possible disciplinary action as a result. Though most agree that losing her job is a real possibility in this case.

Sensitivity

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Ms. Searer went on to explain that, “We Expect all of our employees to be sensitive to the varied cultural backgrounds of our students and community.” Despite the danger to his own position, Brian Scott still continues to support his friend and colleague against the slander and rumors that surround the costume.

Mountain of a Molehill

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

After seeing her Facebook post, Scott spoke out and urged the public to come forward to help support her, lest she be fired from her job. “It’s a kid in a Halloween costume,” he mused when he saw the pictures. “Why are you going after his mother and her job? Because you don’t like the Halloween costume?’”

Not Even a Little Sympathetic

Hitler Costume Story
  shutterstock.com

Scott adds that calling the boy a Nazi sympathizer is also going too far. “To call him a Nazi sympathizer, too, which is what they’re doing on Facebook, just because he dressed up as Hitler for Halloween … people dress up like the devil and witches and vampires and things like that all the time. Evil things.”

Kenyan Filmmaker Reaches Milestone In Historic Fight For Freedom Of Expression

If it’s not the dominance of their long distance runners, the first thing that springs to mind for people when they think of Kenya is likely the country’s diverse wildlife. It’s home to giraffes, hippos, and cheetahs, just to name a few.

But many people don’t know much about the politics of the African nation. The recent drama surrounding a Kenyan film would be the first glimpse for many into a culture war being waged inside the country…

Usually Empty

  shutterstock.com

If you’re the kind of person who likes to go to have the theater almost entirely to yourself when you go to the movies, your best bet is generally to go around lunch time on a weekday. You can pick any seat you like and not have to worry about anyone’s cell phone going off, since just about everybody else will be at work. But on one particular week in Kenya, movie theaters were unusually packed.

Not The Lion King

  imdb.com

That’s because hundreds of people had come out to see Rafiki, which means “friend” in Swahili. The movie centered around the relationship between two young Kenyan women. There’s Kena, a promising student with a love of soccer, and Ziki, a free-spirited young woman with colorful dreadlocks and a mischievous smile.

International Standout

  shutterstock.com

In a country that doesn’t produce very many movies each year, Rafiki had proved to be a standout internationally. It was the first Kenyan film ever to be screened at the Cannes film festival in France. But for all of the attention and acclaim that the movie was getting overseas, it was almost never even shown in Kenyan theaters.

A Love Story

  Rafiki

That’s because at one point during the film, as the two main characters are sharing a moment inside an abandoned van, they come to a realization. They look into each other’s eyes, touch, and then embrace in a kiss. Ultimately, Rafiki is a love story.

A First

  shutterstock.com

While there have been many American movies that are centered on love between two people of the same gender, Rafiki would be a first for Kenya. That’s because homosexuality is not only taboo in the decidedly conservative country, it’s outright illegal.

Strict Rules

  kfcb.co.ke

Kenya also has strong censorship rules and the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has the power to ban movies that they say would have a negative impact on the Kenyan people. Just a few years ago, they exercised that power in banning the film Stories of Our Lives, which profiled several LGBT Kenyans.

Moral Disapproval

  shutterstock.com

“Rafiki contains homosexual scenes that are against the law, the culture, and moral values of the Kenyan people,” Mutua said in a statement. “The film seeks to overtly promote lesbianism.” If the KFCB ruling stood as is, Rafiki would never have been seen inside Kenyan theaters. But the film’s director Wanuri Kahiu was intent on fighting back.

Same Battle

  kahawatungu.com

With Rafiki, the KFCB used many of the same arguments to keep the film from being shown within Kenyan borders. Ezekiel Mutua, the head of the KFCB said that the film “undermined the sensibilities” of Kenyans in the official letter that banned the film.

Fighting To Be Heard

  shutterstock.com

Kahiu sued the KFCB, claiming that the ban on her movie went against her constitutional right to the freedom of expression. While such a case would probably take months at the very least to decide, there was an important time-sensitive factor involved with Rafiki.

Oscar Rumblings

  shutterstock.com

Rafiki was receiving a lot of international buzz and there was even talk of an Oscar nomination. The movie could potentially be a contender for Best Foreign Language film at the 2019 Academy Awards but there was a technical hurdle to overcome. In order for a movie to be considered, it must be screened for at least seven days in its home country.

Temparary Injunction

  shutterstock.com

Thankfully, while the court deliberated on whether Rafiki would be permanently banned or allowed, Kenya’s high court issued a temporary injunction that allowed the movie to be screened for the seven days it needed for Oscar consideration, from September 23rd to 29th of 2018.

We Did It!

  shutterstock.com

In response to the court’s judgment, Kahiu made an emotional post on her Twitter account: “I am crying. In a french airport. In SUCH Joy! Our constitution is STRONG! Give thanks to freedom of expression!!!! WE DID IT! We will be posting about Nairobi screening soon.”

Opposite Reaction

  nairobinews.nation.co.ke

Of course, Mutua had a different reaction about the decision. He tweeted out that “The debate on ‘RAFIKI’ is not about freedom. It’s about our essential values. The hullabaloo about artistic freedom is a decoy. The big agenda is to corrupt our culture and moral values, and to kill the institution of family.”

Bigger Picture

  Rafiki

If there was one thing that Kahiu and Mutua agreed on, it’s that the debate over Rafiki was about more than just the particulars of this one single movie. “The case has become larger than the film, because the case is not about Rafiki,” the film’s director said. “The case is about freedom of expression.”

Simple Goal

  Rafiki

As a filmmaker, Kahiu said, her goal hadn’t originally been to make some grand political statement. She simply wanted to tell a love story with authentic characters. She wanted to show the beauty and heartbreak that ensues when two black LGBT characters try to follow their hearts.

Love Is Love

  shutterstock.com

“That was the point,” Kahiu said. “That it doesn’t matter who you are, love is love and that is an absolute universal, basic language.” And against the backdrop of homophobia and intolerance in a country where homosexuality is outlawed, a statement so simple as that is a radical one.

Hare-Brained

  Rafiki

The KFBC saw Rafiki as nothing less than an intentional attack on Kenyan values, motivated at least in part by international forces. “Hare-brained schemes by foreigners funding film producers in Kenya to promote homosexuality in the name of equality and inclusion will be exposed and strongly resisted,” said a spokesman for the board.

‘A Shame’

  shutterstock.com

“It’s a shame that someone thinks that gay content is what should define the success of the film industry in Kenya. Nollywood is doing wonders, and they don’t pride in such nonsense!” Mutua tweeted.

Police Presence

  shutterstock.com

In an effort to make sure no one under the age of 18 would see Rafiki – and in a move that could be interpreted as a form of intimidation – Mutua made steps to ensure that police would be present during screenings of the film. But despite all the negative comments and police presence, people clamored to see the movie.

Pleased Audiences

  nairobinews.nation.co.ke

During the week it was shown, people packed into the theaters that played the movie, getting tickets for whatever showings were available, even in the middle of a week day. And for those who went to see it, Rafiki had a profound emotional impact. In the previously mentioned scene where Kena and Ziki realize how they feel about each other, audiences broke into applause when the two kissed.

Case Of Missing Teenager Garners Bizarre And Incomplete Confession

Kirsten Fritch Story

In situations where someone confesses to a crime, it’s usually an open and shut case for the authorities. After all, if a suspect says they did it, who’s going to argue?

But in the case of one teenager, even a confession wouldn’t reveal the whole story…

Grisly Crime

Kirsten Fritch Story

In November of 2016, some heart wrenching news gripped the people of Texas. As policemen were performing a welfare check on a home in Baytown they came across the scene of a grisly crime.

Double Homicide

Kirsten Fritch Story

The police found the lifeless bodies of a 37-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl in their own home. Both the woman, who would later be identified as Cynthia Morris, and the daughter, Breanna Pavilicek, had been shot to death.

Missing Girl

While the police certainly had justice for the victims on their minds, there was a more pressing matter at hand. The third member of the household, Kirsten, 16, was nowhere to be found.

Find Her Fast

Police had a very significant reasons for wanting to locate Kirsten as quickly as possible: it was possible that she was present at the time of the killings and, if so, she could be the perpetrator. But if she wasn’t responsible, it could mean that she herself had been another victim of the culprit.

Amber Alert

  Jarretera / shutterstock.com

If there was someone besides Kirsten involved, it meant that she may have been abducted by someone clearly capable of extreme violence. It was imperative that police find her ask quickly as possible if she were to survive. Naturally, they issued an amber alert for the missing teen.

Guy Walks Into A Bar…

Kirsten Fritch Story
  Google Maps

Search teams fanned out across the wooded bayou around sunset looking for any signs of the missing teenager. Meanwhile, about 40 miles away in Texas City, a 21-year-old man named Jesse Dobbs walked into Shenanigan’s Bar with no shoes on his feet.

Calling The Ex

Kirsten Fritch Story
  Jesse Dobbs / Facebook

According to the bar’s owner Sarah Skaggs, her employees told her that “his shirt was wet and he was sweating. He asked to make a phone call, and spoke to someone and told them to come pick him up.” The person on the other end of the line was apparently Dobbs’ ex-wife, who he also asked to see his children one final time.

Instead of helping him out, Dobbs’ former lover called the police. They officers arrived on the scene and after a brief scuffle arrested him. His ex had called the cops for one simple reason: he was the boyfriend of the missing teenager.

Strange Confession

Kirsten Fritch Story
  Baytown Police

During initial questioning with the police, Dobbs confessed to killing Kirsten, allegedly saying, “Kirsten is dead. I killed her. Not the real Kirsten, but the fake Kirsten.” Her mother Cynthia’s car was also found across the street from the bar where Dobbs was arrested.

Kirsten Fritch Story
  Baytown Police

Two days later, police discovered Kirsten Fritch’s body just 200 feet away from the Shenanigans. She had been stabbed nearly 60 times. Dobbs was charged with her murder and later would be charged with the murders of Cynthia and Breanna as well.

Simple Conviction

Kirsten Fritch Story
  www.fox26houston.com

It seemed like an open and shut case all the way around. Jesse Dobbs had confessed to the murder of Kirsten, and was found in close proximity to her dead mother’s car. Naturally, he plead guilty to the murder of the 16-year-old but, surprisingly, he said he had nothing to do with the death of Cynthia or her other daughter.

It Wasn’t Him

Kirsten Fritch Story

According to Dobbs’ lawyer Jyll Rekoff, someone else was responsible for the other two deaths. “The case we’re going to present to the jury is that Mr. Dobbs had nothing to do with the Baytown murders,” she said.

Heated Argument

“Kirsten got into an argument with her mom, something happened, both those murders occurred,” Rekoff continued. While she didn’t outright say it, she seemed to imply that it was Kristen who had shot her mother and sister rather than her client, though she didn’t deny that Dobbs was present on the scene at some point.

Facing a potential five to 99 years in prison, Jesse Dobbs could be locked away for the rest of his life.
