Doctor Does Something Incredible to Let Blind Mother See Her Baby

Blind people cannot see with their eyes, but those without sight depend on their other senses like touch, smell, taste, and sound to ‘see’. In order to see someone’s face, many blind people rely on their sense of touch to get a sense of someone’s facial features.

In the video, 30-year-old Tatiana, who lost her sight at 17, is 20-weeks pregnant, and explains that she can’t wait until her son is born so that she can finally ‘see’ him by holding him, and feeling his little face.

However, her doctor has other plans, and figures out a genius was to allow Tatiana to ‘see’ her son before he’s born.

Tatiana’s doctor asks her what she images her son looks like, she says “I imagine him… well… his nose like a little potato. A small mouth… like that… a chubby little hand.”

Even with her imagination, Tatiana knows she won’t actually be able to ‘see’ her baby until he is born. However, this clever doctor used a 3D printer to make a relief of the baby’s sonogram picture, which allowed Tatiana to feel all his features

Unlikely Perfume Repels Mosquitos

bug repellant

A new study has found that Victoria’s Secret ‘Bombshell’ perfume actually doubles as a bug repellant.

In order to find the most effective mosquito repellants, a group of scientists conducted an experiment at New Mexico State’s Molecular Vector Physiology Lab.

10 different substances were tested, including campout standbys like DEET, as well as a random choice: Victoria’s Secret perfume Bombshell.

It turns out that the perfume is almost as good as DEET.

Researcher Stacy Rodriguez included perfume in the research partly to dispel a myth about flowery perfume. In a statement, she said:

There was some previous literature that said fruity, floral scents attracted mosquitoes, and to not wear those. It was interesting to see that the mosquitoes weren’t actually attracted to the person that was wearing the Victoria’s Secret perfume – they were repelled by it.”

Rodriguez and her colleagues describe their experiments this week in The Journal of Insect Science

To test the repellents, they put two different species of mosquitoes in a holding chamber at the bottom of a Y-shaped tube.

Image Credit: Journal of Insect Science
Image Credit: Journal of Insect Science

One prong of the Y led to a researcher’s untreated hand, an the other led to a hand that had been coated with one of the repellents.

When the mosquitoes were unleashed from their cage, they could choose to fly toward the treated or untreated hands.

If a lot of mosquitos flew toward the treated hand, the repellent wasn’t actually repelling anything.

So the researchers counted how many mosquitoes picked the hands with treatments on them, and measured this attraction accordingly. They also took measurements over time, to see which repellent was still working after several hours.

Repellents that contained DEET were the most effective, and the more DEET they contained, the longer they lasted.

Below is a table showing the percentage of mosquitoes that were attracted to the treated hands (about 61% were attracted to the untreated hand, the control).

Image Credit: Journal of Insect Science
Image Credit: Journal of Insect Science

People wearing one of the “natural alternative” mosquito skin patches made with vitamin B actually attracted more mosquitoes than the control.

The big surprise, as Rodriguez stated, was that the Victoria’s Secret Bombshell perfume was almost as effective as the DEET- laced repellants (attracting only 17% of mosquitoes), and stays effective for 120 minutes.

Apparently, Victoria’s Secret perfume may not actually attract everyone.

So if you want to keep mosquitoes away, wear DEET – or really fruity, flowery perfume like Bombshell.

How Coffee Can Help You Live Longer

Yet another reason to drink more coffee.

Recently, a new study has been published that may further justify your coffee addiction. The best reason to date to drink coffee is to live longer.

A journal called Circulation, found that regular coffee drinkers- people who drank less than five cups of coffee in a given day, have a lower risk of dying early from a number of different causes.

This isn’t to say that coffee is the answer to longevity, but, researchers have found that those who drank coffee on a regular basis had a lower risk of dying during the study’s 30 year follow up from problems such as diabetes, heart disease, brain conditions and suicide.

Interestingly, the researchers found the lower risk of death was similar among people who drank caffeinated as well as decaffeinated coffee.

The researchers studied several large groups of people totaling 208,500 men and women, and asked the volunteers about their coffee drinking habits every four years for three decades.

Study participants who drank between less than a cup of coffee and three cups a day had 5% to 9% lower risk of dying that those who drank no coffee. Those who drank more than three a day did not see any benefit.

But when the researchers looked at coffee consumption only among people who said they never smoked, the relationship became clearer: Those who drank between less than a cup of coffee and three cups a day had 6% to 8% lower risk of dying than non-coffee drinkers. Those who drank three to five cups and more than five cups had 15% and 12% lower death rates.

Researchers write: “other components in coffee besides caffeine might play a beneficial role mediating the association between long-term coffee consumption and risk of mortality.”

For many years coffee was deemed unhealthy. But much of that concern came from research in the 1970s and 1980s that linked coffee to higher rates of cancer and heart disease, but didn’t account for the fact that coffee drinkers are also more likely to smoke, possibly drink and engage in other behaviors that contribute to cancer and heart problems.

More recent studies are actually starting to find the opposite, showing that coffee drinkers might have a slightly lower mortality risk.

Drink up folks.

Not many things are cuter than baby Pandas.

Many pandas live in populated sanctuaries where breeding programs are in place to increase their number. There are only about 1,800 giant pandas left in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Organization, and more than 300 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world.

The Taipei Zoo in Taiwan is home to some of the world’s pandas, in particular, a giant panda named Yuan Yuan and her cub Yuan Zai.

Yuan Zai has become particularly curious about her surroundings, as many infants are.

We are living in an increasingly hostile world filled with loss, sadness, and tragedy. Yet, this world is also full of joy, magic, and love. The only difference is how you choose to look at it.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama believes that each person has the power to live compassionately, and change the future for the better. He has dedicated his life to teaching the world compassion and love, and his words are all the more important as we are faced with the choice of love or hate every single day.

15. What’s inside is far more important than the outside.

14. Anger is never the solution.

13. You decide what the future will be like.

12. Prayer alone won’t change the world.

11. Loving yourself and others is the most important thing.

10. Compassion is the key to inner strength.

9. The truth is stronger than guns.

8. Being strong means being compassionate.

7. You have the ability to make the world a better place.

6. Happiness depends on you, not circumstance.

5. Compassion is a commitment.

4. Finding fault in others is useless.

3. Your happiness depends on others.

2. Forgiveness is the cure to anger.

1. Turn the negative into a positive.

LEGO Finally Invents The Slippers We’ve All Been Waiting For

There are three levels of pain in this world: pain, excruciating pain, and stepping on a LEGO.

As anybody who had a childhood can testify, nothing brings tears to the eyes faster than the horrible pain of stepping on a LEGO. For some reason, it seems to hurt worse when the lights are out and you’re stumbling to the kitchen for a drink of water.
However, LEGO has invented a solution to solve the world’s LEGO-related problems. Just in time for the holiday season, the brand came out with their very own LEGO-proof slippers, perfect for the parent in your life.
The brand worked alongside French advertising agency Brand Station to come up with a solution for the age old problem. Turns out we have known about this solution for years. The slippers feature special padding that protects the base of the foot with its extra fluffy defense mechanisms. (The jury is still out deliberating about how this differs from any other shoe or slipper on the market.)
In a statement on the Piwee website, Brand Station said it had only made 1,500 pairs of the slippers, and would be giving them away for free at random to people who created a wish list through their website.

If you have or have had Lego at home, you probably know that walking on a small brick lying on the ground is perhaps even worse than stubbing your little toe on the corner of a piece of furniture.

So to avoid this inconvenience, Lego, along with its agency Brand Station, invented slippers so you can walk safely in the house. Genius!

Besides being super comfortable, they take the shape and colors of the iconic brand.

And remember, kiddies…

30 Things Sexier Than PEOPLE Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive

The votes have been tallied and this year’s title of Sexiest Man Alive has officially been given to heartthrob David Beckham.

I’m not one to knock it till I’ve tried it (and I’d certainly be willing to try this one), but I have to feel that the whole “sexiest thing alive” tradition is a little overwhelming. Who are you, PEOPLE Magazine, to tell me the sexiest man alive?

True, David Beckham is a global superstar, devoted husband, down-to-earth dad of four, AND he runs around Beverly Hills in his underwear, but does this really warrant him the sexiest man alive?

Sure, the man can smolder, and I bet he has one heck of a bicycle kick (I just had to consult the Google to find out what a bicycle kick even is). However, the intellectual side of me (what’s left of it) knows the difference between fact and opinion, and in my personal opinion, I know there are 30 things I can name off the top of my head much sexier than David Beckham.

Am I wrong?

  1. Getting into bed at the end of a long day and wrapping the cold sheets around your toes.
  2. Macaroni n’ cheese…WITH BACON BITS.
  3. Shirtless Vlad feeding a horse.

  4. The Old Spice guy (the suave and dapper one, not Terry Crews).
  5. Your nerdy math tutor who doesn’t appear very attractive at first, but is actually insanely hot in the right lighting.
  6. Pirating a movie online and not having to wait for it to buffer.
  7. Abstract college lawn art (have you seen the curves on those things?).
  8. And speaking of curves, check out the ones on that burrito from Chipotle.
  9. Getting an A on your research paper analyzing The Odyssey.
  10. Girls who pronounce precious in its entirety, rather than simply saying “presh.”
  11. Payday.
  12. The Phantom of the Opera (like, the actual phantom and not the play…though that’s pretty sexy too, just not sexier than Mr. Beckham).
  13. Food babies.
  14. When you walk past somebody attractive and make serious eye contact for two seconds, but then never talk again. EVER.
  15. A full tank of gas.
  16. That time you got arrested by an attractive police officer for being a hot mess in public at 3am (in hindsight, this may have been sexier for you than it was for her).
  17. North West (the direction, not the child).
  18. Women with pixie haircuts (I only say this because I am a woman with a pixie haircut).
  19. A fully stocked fridge.
  20. Quoting things Owen Wilson says in his movies.
  21. Stage-5 clingers.
  22. Any song by Adele that makes you think of your ex and tear up.
  23. Tearaway pants.

  24. Walking into a glass window you thought it was a door and then pretending nothing happened.
  25. Artsy beers (can I get a pumpkin spice IPA please?)
  26. Men who teach English and wear long sleeve shirts rolled up to their elbows.
  27. Short walks on the beach.
  28. Long walks to the refrigerator.
  29. Barack Obama’s increasingly wrinkled face.
  30. And a world void of terrorism.

5 Ways To Actually Save Your Precious Pennies

$
0
0

But I don’t think you’re going to like it…

The answer is simple, friends. If you don’t want to spend so much money, stop spending money. The best way to keep more money in your savings account is buy reducing your materialism. We all fall on the scale of materialistic values and aspire to have a multimillion dollar mansion with two sports cars in the driveway, but is blowing your money on stuff really the way to achieve happiness?

Researchers from Psychology Today say it’s a big, fat “no.” Because of a little psychological term called “hedonic adaptation,” we’ve learned that stuff does in fact NOT make us content.

Sure, it makes us happy when we first buy it. The rush of an expensive new purse is thrilling, but after three months, the car siting in your driveway is just your car. We fall prey to the “hedonic treadmill” of having to keep up with the Jonses and attempt to continuously get trendier clothes, nicer homes, and more lavish vacations to make us happy.

Here are a few ways to save money and lower your materialism:

1. Recognize when you lust after somebody else’s stuff:

Are you enamored with our co-workers new purse? Are you DYING to take a vacation like your friend from college just took to Tahiti?

If you want to be happier (and save some serious dough), never compare another person’s outsides to your insides. Just because that co-worker has a gorgeous home and two cars doesn’t guarantee they are happy. People rarely post about their mental health issues on Facebook, so don’t be tricked into believing the lies social media has us believe.

Instead, pay attention to each time you lust after another’s life. Acknowledge pop culture makes us yearn for materialism, take a deep breathe, congratulate them if necessary, and move on.

2. Don’t allow yourself to make impulse buys:

When you are dying to buy a fancy piece of jewelry, or you really want a chocolate bar on the grocery store line, ask yourself a simple question. Will I still value this and will it still make me happy six months from now?

Chances are that purse, chocolate bar, or shiny Hunter rain boots will not make you happy 6 months down the road.

Again, take a deep breathe, recognize that the 5,000 branding messages we see every day probably have a little influence, and keep going.

3. When you do buy something, ask yourself how much you need it:

I like to believe I’ve done a fairly decent job of reducing my materialism, lately. I used to be pulled in every direction by girls that dressed better than me and media telling me how to act. However, after taking a step back and elevating my awareness, I’ve become a much happier person (my paycheck goes farther too, now).

I still buy clothes and shoes, and I certainly indulge in my materialistic values on occasion. However, before buying something, I try to think about how badly I need it. If I really want a pair of durable shoes or a book I know I’ll hold onto for a long time, I will allow myself to buy it. However, I do not subject myself to mindless spending of money I don’t have to blow.

4. Spend money on experiences rather than things:

I try to live my life with the purpose of collecting experiences. Every new activity I participate in, I catalog in my mental book of life. By the time I’m on my deathbed, I hope that book is bursting at the seams.

If you are going to spend money, try to spend it on a memory, especially one with somebody you have a strong connection with. Psychologists say memories will bring you more happiness than material items. Jumping out of a plane will have a longer lasting effect than buying new furniture.

By that same note, a variety of experiences will also go farther than the same experience repeated multiple times. That means getting blackout drunk every weekend (even if it’s with people you “love”), may no bring you as much happiness as varied experiences and day trips once a month.

5. Practice gratitude:

Make a list of all the things you have in your life that you are grateful for. I’m talking about the major thins, like your brand new Ford Focus, to the minor things, like living in a country where free speech is allowed.

Currently, there are 4 million displaced refugees fleeing their home country because they fear for their lives. Be grateful that you have a bed to sleep in every night and a job to go to each morning. If you make a list of all the good things in your life, you’ll stop yearning for more and focus on what you already have.

Your wallet will also be grateful.

In classrooms across the country, each day starts out with some type of routine.

There are announcements, a run-through of the day, and usually the Pledge of Allegiance. But, in this video, teacher Chris Ulmer operates his classroom a little differently…

Every morning, he spends the first 10 minutes giving compliments to each of his eight students.

Compliments include: “I love having you in my class. I think you’re very funny. You’re a great soccer player. Everyone in here loves you,” Ulmer says to the kids as they each take their turn standing in front of the class, facing Ulmer.

Ulmer is a special ed teacher, whose students include those with autism, traumatic brain injury, speech apraxia and agenesis of corpus callosum.

When Ulmer first started teaching, he said, each day had a theme, like “Monday Funday” and “Toast Tuesday,” which is when the affirmations began.

“I noticed the kids were always more motivated, happier and better behaved on Tuesdays. So we started doing it every day.”

And Ulmer began posting videos to his Facebook page- Special Books by Special Kids, with the kids’ permission almost everyday.

Each incredible student comes from a segregated environment, but Ulmer says, “Now they’re participating in school activities, dancing in front of hundreds of other kids and in the debate club.” And while Ulmer agrees academics are important, he feels it is even more important to reverse the psychological damage that came from being made to feel like outcasts.

Ulmer is committed to telling his students‘ stories on social media to educate the masses about what life is like in their shoes. “Everyone has their quirks, and that’s a good thing,” he said. “We give ignorance a free pass. There is no excuse for a lack of empathy.”

Genius Way Dad Stopped His Baby From Crying

When his precious little girl wouldn’t stop crying, this dad had to think on his feet and get creative.

With mom away, there was no time to waste, and dad was even more determined to get his baby to stop crying

So, he grabs his camera and carries his baby into the room where the washing machine is.

He carefully plays his little girl on top of the dryer, and the dryer on.

Amazingly, within moments, his daughter had stopped crying, and even looked relaxed.

The benefit of putting his little girl on the dryer was that the vibrations it made really soothed her. Of course you don’t need to take to your dryer to stop your baby from crying, and it can be quite dangerous for your child.

Even vibrating bouncers have been deemed unsafe for babies, unless you use them properly and carefully follow the directions.

While we do not recommend it, this video did clearly show how quickly the little baby stopped crying.

Bay Bridge Drive Overs is a company with a unique twist.

For a small fee, they’ll drive their customers over the 4.3 miles long Chesapeake Bay Bridge. They’ll even hop in the driver’s seat and do it for you in your own car.

Fear of bridges, or gephyrophobia is a relatively common fear that affects a significant amount of people. Those who suffer from it experience intense panic and anxiety when faced with their fear. And if you find yourself routinely crossing “the scariest bridge in America,” the fear can really take a toll on sufferers.

While some may deal with their fear of crossing bridges and get past it, others might just pay somebody to deal with their issues for them. Overcoming a fear is extremely difficult and Bay Bridge Drive Overs is prospering significantly from gephyrophobia.

This must be one of the stranger jobs we’ve come across:

Following this idea, we have come up with a few other jobs we would like people to take care of for us:

  • Professional bug stomper
  • Lifter of heavy things
  • Eater of all foods green and leafy
  • Professional junk mail deleter
  • Somebody who will answer my mother’s text messages for me.

If you are skilled in these areas, please send your cover letter and resume via pigeon carrier.

Horse Approaches a Veteran With PTSD and Does the Most Incredible Thing Ever

A unique program in Saratoga Springs, called Saratoga War Horse, teaches veterans from across the U.S. how to communicate with horses.

After serving in the military, these veterans experience a multitude of things from having nightmares, to losing trust in people, and becoming introverted and isolated (and that’s to name a few).

But, this farm seems to be a sanctuary for these wounded veterans.

Saratoga War Horse uses horses to help veterans who are dealing with the invisible scars of war.

A horse is an animal that so honestly mirrors the veteran’s energy and emotion, and it really seems to open veterans up, when they otherwise would be hesitant to.

At the start, both are unsure and untrusting. But within minutes, the horse realizes he’s understood and that this person is speaking his language.

He shows a sign of trust by walking over to the veteran and putting its head down!

Something about the horse’s acceptance transforms the veteran.

One veteran describes, “Whatever emotions I had, whatever I was feeling, at that time inside the ring, I was able to leave it there. I passed through the gate and I felt that I didn’t have to carry it anymore.”

“There’s a lot of pain that these veterans have to find a way to let go of and this seems to be a very effective method,” said Bob Nevins, the Founder of Saratoga War Horse, and this sanctuary is helping them do that.
