Shocking Report Reveals Why You Should Rethink Donating To Wounded Warrior

Soldiers who risk their lives every day and make unimaginable sacrifices in the name of protecting our country deserve to be supported and honored as they return home. However, many are forced to rely on charitable organizations when they can’t get the support they deserve.

Unfortunately, one of the most prominent charities set up for helping soldiers returning home from war, The Wounded Warriors Project, has recently been exposed by a CBS News investigation for wasting donation money from hard-working Americans that should be going to helping soldiers, and is instead using that money for themselves.

According to CharityNavigator.org, other less publicized charities like the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust (DAV) and the Fisher House charity spends over 90 percent of its budget on veterans. The Wounded Warrior Project, on the other hand, only 60 percent of donations actually go to soldiers.

Upon returning home from Iraq in 2006 with a traumatic brain injury and PTSD, Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette was inspired by the charity’s work, and began working as a public speaker for them. But two years later, Millette quit after being shocked by the waste.

“Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, but what the public doesn’t see is how they spend their money,” he said. “You’re using our injuries, our darkest days, our hardships, to make money. So you can have these big parties.”

“It was extremely extravagant. Dinners and alcohol, and just total access” one former employee explained. Not only is the misuse of funds wrong, but the former employee went on to explain “it’s what the military calls fraud waste and abuse.”

CBS News reported that the charity’s tax forms go on to document even more misuse of funds. In 2010 the charity spent a total of $1.7 million for conferences and meetings, and in 2014, that spending on conferences and meetings skyrocketed to $26 million, which is about the same amount that they spend on their top recovery program.

“Donors don’t want you to have a $2,500 bar tab. Donors don’t want you to fly every staff member once a year to some five-star resort and whoop it up and call it team building,” Millette said.

“I’m sorry, but I’ll be damned if you’re gonna take hard-working Americans’ money and drink it and waste it,” Millette said.

Watch the entire video below to find out more about the accusations made against The Wounded Warrior Project.

While The Wounded Warrior Project does still raise money for veterans in need, keep in mind that nearly $120 million of the $300 million raised is being wasted while there are still so many vets who need help. Next time you want to donate, maybe consider donating to another group.

Five generations of family and friends traveled to Tracy, California to celebrate Rafaela and Nicholas Ordaz’ 82nd wedding anniversary, but amidst all the commotion, the two only had eyes for each other.

Rafaela, 100, and Nicholas, 102 say that “Respect, affection, and don’t sweat the small stuff,” are key ingredients to their long and successful marriage. And according to their granddaughter Leticia Ordaz, romance also runs in the family.

“Their parents lived to be 112 and 108, and they were also happily married. Divorce isn’t really something our family has experienced,” Leticia Ordaz, told TODAY.  “Nurturing those relationships is a huge part of our culture.”

“They’re still so in love. It’s quite remarkable,” Ordaz said. “In every picture, they’re holding hands or trying to kiss each other.”

“At one point, my grandfather pulled her aside and said, ‘Rafaela, let’s go to the bedroom now.’ Of course we all heard and started howling!” But Nicholas didn’t even blush. He said that he married the most beautiful woman in the world, and that her body was just as booming now as it was then.

Leticia says her grandparents really take care of each other: “At the party, he kept looking around to see if she had gotten any cake yet. She has diabetes — she can’t really have cake! But he wanted them to experience it together.”

Leticia just celebrated her own 10-year anniversary, but her grandparents have given her a lot to live up to. They are just 5 years short of beating the Guinness World Records for the longest marriage ever recorded, which is held by U.S. couple Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, who were married for 86 years and 290 days before Fisher died on Feb. 27, 2011. But 82 years is still quite an accomplishment.

“Now that they’re getting older, their memories aren’t as sharp. They forget everyone else’s names, but always remember each other,” Leticia says.

Parent will do whatever they can to make sure their children are safe, and when high-tech baby monitors that could be controlled by an app on your phone, tablet, or computer, it made keeping an eye on your child that much easier.

Unfortunately, one family learned the hard way that their baby monitor opened them up to other dangers. Washington parents Sarah and Jay were shocked when they found out that a stranger was able to hack into their baby monitor in their son’s room, and was spying on the toddler and talking to him from the device’s speaker.

Their son had complained that he was afraid to go to bed because of the man that was talking to him on the phone, but Sarah and Jay couldn’t understand what he meant, and figured he was just having a nightmare.

But one night when Sarah walked past her son’s bedroom, she heard a voice. When she walked in the room, she heard a man’s voice coming from the monitor saying “wake up little boy, daddy’s looking for you.” The hacker also managed to remotely access the night-vision camera and was controlling it to follow their every movement.

Brave Elephant Mother Risks Everything To Save Her Baby From Wild Dogs

While Dennis Browning, a South African tourist, was visiting the Ingwelala Nature Reserve in South Africa, he managed to capture an incredible show of a mother elephant’s bravery and selflessness as she throws herself in front on a pack of African wild dogs to protect her defenseless baby.

At first, the situation seemed doomed, as the mother elephant, her baby, and one other elephant were surrounded and outnumbered by the pack of 14 vicious dogs, but the mother refused to go down quietly. By making loud trumpeting calls, the distressed mothers managed to intimidate the pack, while also calling for some help.

While the elephants clearly are much larger than the wild dogs, the pack outnumbers the mother, which leaves the baby elephant vulnerable to an attack.

Luckily, mom’s loud roars manage to hold off the hungry dogs long enough for a big group of elephants to show up and provide some much-needed backup.

When First Lady Michelle Obama and the Joining Forces Initiative asks you to do something special for our troops stationed overseas, you better start packing your bags!

That’s exactly what Conan O’Brien did this week when FLOTUS and the program she started with Mrs. Vice President Jill Biden to encourage all Americans to support our military members, families and veterans, reached out to the late night funnyman to perform for servicemen and women stationed in middle eastern country Qatar.

[YouTube]
[YouTube]
In typical CoCo fashion, O’Brien put on a hysterical show for the troops, but my favorite segment so far has been the video below, where the star trains with the station’s military dog unit…and gets a little more than he bargained for.

[YouTube]
[YouTube]
In the clip below we see Conan crack jokes with a couple of the base’s k9 trainers and even throw on a full body protection suit to get some very hands-on experience with the furriest members of our nation’s military.

As you can expect, the resulting clip is six minutes of pure laughter. Check out the video below and don’t forget to SHARE this post with all of your military supporting friends on Facebook!

Puppies are one of the cutest animals, but don’t be deceived by their size, they have an uncanny ability to make a mess of just about anything they come in contact with. Despite everything, it’s impossible to stay mad at their fluffy faces especially when they offer to help clean up their mess.

In the video, this 3-month-old Newfoundland puppy named Samson gets caught by his patient owner peeing on the kitchen floor, but the precious pup attempts to help out by wiping up the mess with a few paper towels.

Unfortunately, Samson is quickly distracted, and ditches clean up time with mom to chase his little tail.

They have a love story straight off the silver screen, watched by millions, but what country and bluegrass crooners plus husband and wife duo Joey + Rory are going through is anything but happy these days.

Once a lonely Restaurant owner in Nashville, Tennessee, Joey Martin’s life was turned upside down when she met songwriter Rory Feek. The duo fell for each other instantly and soon found out they had some serious chemistry in the studio together as well.

“Joey’s a singer. She’s got a gift,” Rory told People about his wife. “She opens her mouth and the world moves – at least, mine does.”

Hope is a beautiful thing.

Just four months after the couple’s daughter, Indiana, was born with Down syndrome, doctors told Joey she had cervical cancer.

Turning 16 is a rite of passage for many young girls around the world, and those in the animal kingdom should be no exception.

This endangered red panda is named Chiro, and she is the “golden girl” of Symbio Wildlife Park’s red panda sanctuary.

To celebrate Chiro’s 16th birthday, zoo keeper Ash Clarke made her a delicious cake consisting of all her favorite fruit, and decorated with the freshest bamboo shoots.

Chiro arrived to Symbio about six ago to form part of the zoo’s red panda captive breeding program, and quickly became quite a hit because of her constant look of happiness.

She also plays a vital role in educating the public and helping further their appreciation and understanding of endangered species. While technically in her twilight years, (with the average lifespan of a red panda being 8 years old), Chiro has made it to 16, so technically she is a senior!

Speaking affectionately of Chori, Keeper Ash said,

“She is definitely a little bit of diva in the mornings, always spending a good five to ten minutes grooming herself before coming down from the tree, even for a cake as delicious looking as this! but that’s Chori for you!”

But Chori knows who cares about her, and shows her affection in any way she can.

Many know George Clooney as an Academy Award-winning actor, producer, and total heartthrob…but did you know he’s also an animal lover?

Clooney and his wife Amal have adopted two cocker spaniels, a basset hound mix whom they found outside a restaurant begging for food scraps, and at one point George even famously owned a pet pig

But, it’s George’s most recent adoption of a dog named Nate that is sweeping the internet, and has everyone talking.

The actor and his wife recently adopted the terrier after he was rescued from a previous owner, who was described as a hoarder.  Nate was was born with birth defects including “a barrel chest, a leg that swayed,” according to LuvFurMutts, the rescue group that took Nate in.

“When we took Nate to adoption events, people would stare and kids would point. Several people applied to adopt him but then said no when they met him… The lowest point came when an adopter cried when she met him and said she would be depressed the rest of her life if she had to look at him every day,” LuvFurMutts said.

However, none of this deterred the Hollywood power couple, who fell in love with Nate after seeing photos of him online. Knowing how affected Clooney’s parents were by the recent loss of their terrier of 10 years, they decided to give them Nate as a new family member.

“What is impressive is the fact that George picked Nate out, and Nick and Nina accepted Nate just the way he is,” LuvFurMutts said. “They could have any dog in the world, but they chose to adopt a dog who was crippled and could have been with LuvFurMutts for life.”

We wish Nate Clooney a very happy life with his new family. He is definitely one lucky pooch!

Precious Girl With Autism Breaks 3-Year Silence To Ask For More Toast

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) manifests itself differently for each person, but the first signs of the disorder usually emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Coco Bradford, a now 5-year-old from St Ives, Cornwall, had been developing as usual and even spoke her first word when she was 26 months old.

Then, everything suddenly changed. Coco’s speech quickly disappeared completely, she stopped responding to her name, and stopped making eye contact.

“When we first were told Coco had autism we were heartbroken, I had already read so much about it and was praying it wouldn’t be that,” Coco’s mom, Rachel Bradford told The Daily Mail. “How could she possibly have autism when she developed normally, spoke, made eye contact, passed her two-year check easily.”

“She immediately started getting frustrated and life changed for us forever,” Bradford said.

The family couldn’t afford to send Coco to ABA therapy, which teaches new behaviour patterns through positive reinforcement, so older sister Chelsea Elcocks set up a fundraising page. Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, and strangers, Coco could finally get the vital therapy she needed. “Coco has been having ABA for only four months and the improvement has been phenomenal in every single part of her life,” Elcocks said.

Finally, after three long and painful years of silence, Coco shocked everyone two days before her fifth birthday by asking for ‘more toast, please.’

Mom happily shared the news in a Facebook post and wrote: “‘I want more toast please.’ This is Coco history being made, first five-word sentence ever, pretty relevant as it’s her 5th birthday in two days. Totally unprompted by the way.”

“It was a really magical moment,” Bradford said. “She looked so pleased with herself and was jumping up and down and just kept saying ‘I want more toast’.

Dill is a very special puppy.

The perfect opportunity arose when a woman named Jess Street learned of Dill when she reconnected with a friend who volunteers for Fetch WI. It just so happened that Jess was looking for a potential therapy dog just like Dill!

“I had been looking for for a potential therapy dog for well over a year, but the right one just had not come around yet,” Street told The Dodo. “Literally everything about Dill seemed perfect, except for the fact that he was on the other side of the country from me.”

However, it seemed to be fate one day, when the price of the flight for Jess to fly from Florida to Wisconsin dropped from almost $300 to practically nothing! Jess also was able to stay with her family in Madison, and some amazing people donated money to Fetch WI to help cover Dill’s adoption fee. “It was 100 percent meant to be,” Street said.

Jess renamed Dill, Doc, as he is now on his way to becoming a therapy dog, and being part of her and her 6-year-old daughter’s nonprofit organization called The Kindness TribeDoc will soon be touching the lives of many, and Jess says, “I can already see how he will have such a great opportunity to change lives … probably beginning with mine and my daughter’s.”

We are so happy Doc found his forever home!

When Marine Corps soldier Nick Saunders enlisted with his best friend, he never imagined the horrible things he would witness would haunt him for the rest of his life. Saunders had been handling it all fine as he served his country until he got news that his best friend died after stepping on an IED, and later witnessed multiple suicides by those serving with him.

When he finally returned from war, Nick was haunted by the ‘shadows’ of the men that he had witnessed die, and each night he would relive the horror. “There’s been nights where I would just be laying on the couch or in bed with somebody, and I’d see a shadow and I’d reach over and punch them in the chest,” Nick explained.  “There’s been times where I woke up and I’ve had my AR-15 pointed at them because I thought they were a shadow.”

When doctors tested Nick for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, he scored a 78 out of a possible 85 points, which meant his PTSD was extremely severe, and after four years struggling to function, Nick decided to put an end to it all one way or another.

Nick was never given the support he desperately needed from the Department of Veteran Affairs, so when it all became too much for him to bear, he showed up to their offices with a loaded gun and threatened to kill himself if they didn’t help him right away.

After a doctor listened to Nick’s story, she paired him up with an incredible Beagle named Winston through the Vets to Vets organization and finally his life was transformed.

“When I get anxious, he’ll jump on my lap and bring me back to reality. When I have nightmares a couple times a night, he’ll push my in the back and wake me up and make sure that I’m ok.”

Kittens are normally less agile than their parents, but when the Watauga Humane Society found this tiny kitten named Olive, they noticed something was very off with her coordination…

After bringing her to get tested at the veterinarian, Olive was finally diagnosed with “Wobbly Kitten Syndrome,” which is a neurological disorder that affects her movement.

Wobbly Kitten Syndrome makes walking and staying still a struggle, as Olive’s head constantly wobbles back and forth. Yet it doesn’t stop the playful kitten from exploring and having fun, and cats with the syndrome learn to compensate for their movement.

“She is a spitfire. She’s got the biggest personality. It’s like her disorder doesn’t affect her,” said Christy Watson, manager of the Watauga Humane Society.

“She plays with other cats and she loves to be held. As soon as she sees a person her motor starts running and she purrs. She’s just the sweetest cat ever.”

Locked arm and arm with each other, complete strangers saved the life of a driver whose tractor-trailer lost control during snowstorm Jonas.

It all happened in Pennsylvania over the weekend, and a man named Arlyn Satanek witnessed the entire incident. He described it as something he’s never seen before, and Satanek has been driving trucks for many years. Snow was falling inch by inch, and by evening, the roads were completely covered with ice.

“At that point, I was on my brakes with everything I had and hoping I didn’t lose control. I saw the truck out in front of me pretty much finishing his wipe out and cutting off the entire two lanes of traffic and angling down over the cliff,” Satanek told Action News 4

The driver took out nearly half a mile of guardrail, and debris and fuel covered the road when the truck started smoking. But the driver was still stuck in the car! Satanek said that within seconds, other motorists stopped to help.

“It was just like everyone knew in that moment we have to reach him, ‘Let’s lock into this and get this guy up.’ It was awesome,” he said.

“I decided I knew they had him, and I wanted to get a picture, I want to remember this.” That was when Satanek snapped a picture of the selfless strangers:

This Baby Can’t Stop Laughing When The Dog Catches Green Beans

The wonderful thing we love about children is how much joy they get from the simple things in life.

Children are able to laugh easily at the things we shrug off as mundane. Take for example, little Chase Melloway who has never found anything more interesting than watching the funny family dog do what dogs do best.

The family’s Labrador, Zoey has spent enough time begging, and is being rewarded with green beans (an odd choice of reward, but one that Zoey doesn’t seem to mind).

When she jumps up to catch the tasty snack, Chase has an unparalleled case of the giggles. His laughter is more infectious than whatever strain of the common cold has been circling your office this year.

Now that is some contagious laughter. Just try holding your own giggles in:

We often find a lot of laughing babies, and we love writing about them. If you enjoyed this video, you might also get a kick out of an adorable baby cracking up over a chip.

And If you really enjoyed this giggling child as much as we have, please SHARE with friends and family to brighten their day too.

Meeting your daughter’s new boyfriend isn’t an easy encounter, but one Canadian mother got especially creative when meeting her daughter’s new man.

When Daniel Gray was brought home to meet his girlfriend’s parents, things didn’t go as expected. Daniel is from New Zealand, a place that rarely sees snow. His girlfriend Kathleen Burton, is from Canada, a place that sees a ton of snow.

When Kathleen brought Daniel home to Canada, Kathleen’s mother Brigid had a surprise for Daniel.

It came packaged as a few dozen milk cartons with an instruction manual:

Rather than sitting Daniel down and asking him about his intentions with her daughter, she put him to work…building an igloo. Brigid had Daniel embark on a five-day project, filling countless milk cartons with water, adding food coloring, and building a huge igloo.

First, he cleared a space:

If you needed an uplifting story, you just found it.

In St. Peter’s Square, temperatures drop into the freezing range this time of year. However, a homeless woman had few alternatives when it came to giving birth.

So, on Jan. 20, a 35-year-old Romanian woman delivered a child on a cardboard box right outside the square, according to Reuters.

Police say the woman went into labor just after 2:30 am, mere yards away from the Vatican.

However, what happened next is beautiful:

It’s wonderful to see these kind actions taking place in the world, especially in a place like Rome.

Whether Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or atheist,  we can all appreciate this story and the kindness exemplified by the Vatican.

This act of kindness falls in line with the year of mercy declared by Pope Francis. The leader of the Catholic Church said he wants the celebration to be for all believers “a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God,” according to Vatican Radio.

While police dogs often go out on duty with their partners with limited or no protective gear, they are the most fearless and determined members of the squad and continuously put themselves in harms way to protect their own.

While the Pennsylvania Port Authority police were in pursuit of a knife-wielding drunken man, they attempted to stun the man with a taser, but his thick work shirt blocked the shock. An officer then released Aren, the 5-year-old German Shepherd to stop the man, but he stabbed Aren multiple times before officers resorted to fatally shooting the suspect.

Unfortunately, police dog fatalities are so common since they typically don’t wear protective vests. In fact, Aren was the eighth police dog killed on duty this year with an average of two police dogs dying per week in January.

Not only was Aren an exceptional partner to Sgt. Brian O’Malley while on duty, but he was also an incredible family dog, which is why his passing has been especially hard for the police officer.“It’s a horrible thing,” said Port Authority police Chief Matt Porter. “He’s a member of that officer’s family and he’s a member of the law enforcement family.”

Outside the veterinarian clinic where Aren was declared dead, police officers held a vigil for their fallen brother, and covered him with a flag as they passed the other saluting officers.

This viral video literally deserves a round of applause.

Back in March, a mother-to-be named Jen Cardinal shared an ultrasound video of her 14-week-old unborn baby shown clapping her hands. Mom posted the clip to YouTube, writing, “At our 14 week ultrasound our baby was clapping, so I sang a song with our doctor as my husband filmed.”

The video shows the baby, now named Penelope clapping seven times, while mom and the doctor sang off camera to If You’re Happy And You Know It.

Many commenters were quick to call the video fake, but Cardinal set the record straight saying, “The experience is one I’ll never forget, the baby clapped three times, then the doctor rewound and scrubbed it while we sang. No mystery. It was amazing. Trolls won’t get me down!” She also told TODAY.com that while her doctor manipulated the footage to extend the applause, the first three claps were indeed “very real.”

“We went for an ultrasound. Our baby clapped two or three times. We gasped, laughed,” she said. “Doctor said, ‘let’s sing a song.’ He rewound and replayed it to us singing, so it looks like the baby is clapping. Great fun.”

A representative for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists added, “Fetuses make all sorts of meaningless movements in utero without knowing that they are doing it — but if the clapping movement is real, it only happened once and they probably edited it to repeat.”
