If you witnessed a horrific crash while driving during rush hour, would you sit back and take pictures of the scene, call 911, or would you jump from your own car and risk your life to save a total stranger?

When faced with this exact situation, one brave Australian man named Athen Barnaby, who was wearing only shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals, didn’t hesitate to climb up onto the burning wreckage from a bad truck accident, and pull the injured 60-year-old driver out from a truck that was about to explode.

“I didn’t feel the heat much at all, I think it was just the adrenaline. I had my thick thongs on, and I just climbed straight up wherever I could find the angle,” Barnaby said.

“We were all yelling at him, saying, ‘mate, you got to get out of there, this thing is going to blow,” Barnaby told The Today Show. “He was yelling back saying he couldn’t see, he couldn’t see, he managed to get himself out of the window”.

Barnaby later received an award for his bravery, and he explained his training as a student pilot helped him stay calm during the emergency.

“The moment when all your life lessons of valuing life, caring for family and others all come into play when you have to make a sound decision of whether you put your life at risk to save another,” Barnaby wrote in a Facebook post.

20-year-old Tufts University student, Hannah Steinberg, has turned a unique hobby of ‘coupon-clipping’ into something that’s helping a lot of people.

At the mere age of 10, Hannah Steinberg had saved up $300 to buy a real cash register that she used to keep track of her money.

And by 14, she became hooked on the reality show Extreme Couponing and decided to apply her interest in couponing to a good cause. Hannah began looking through circulars and cutting coupons that she took to stores like CVS and Target, and along with $500 she had saved up from babysitting, she purchased enough toiletries and canned goods to take to the Coachman Family Center, a local homeless shelter.

“My parents thought I was crazy at first, but once I showed them and everyone else how much $500 and coupons could get you, they realized I was on to something,” Steinberg told Today.com. “They’re now so supportive that they let me take over the dining room table and garage.”

But, it wasn’t always so easy, as Hannah explains, “There’s definitely a learning curve. I think the first delivery I gave them three toothbrushes and a few yogurts. It was so bad I honestly probably didn’t save that much money because I had no clue what I was doing.”

But by 18, with the help of family and friends, Hannah started her nonprofit charity, Our Coupons Care in October 2014, and has since donated $110,000 worth of goods to homeless shelters and hospitals.

So many people have been trying to help Hannah that along with donations, they give her 20-year-old coupons that are still effective!

“People don’t realize how many different types of coupons there are,” Steinberg said. “Within one store, there are a lot of options.”

Steinberg is excited for the future of Our Coupons Care, and credits her family and friends for making it possible to continue doing it at school.

“I feel lucky that I’m able to use my interests to help others,” Steinberg told Today.com. “It’s really fun for me!”

This dad turned seemingly mundane moments in the life of a baby, into witty Dubsmash videos for his wife to enjoy during work.

When Eric Bruce’s wife Priscilla began working evenings as a part-time hair and makeup artist, Eric wanted to go above and beyond to make her feel included when he spent nights alone with their son Jack.

Jack is 1-year-old, and when he was just three weeks old, he was in the hospital for minor surgery. It was then that Eric began making the videos, so Priscilla felt more ok leaving him when she had to return to work. But, that wasn’t his only reason for creating the videos…Eric also felt it was important for their father/son relationship.

“It was a little glimpse into the past year of raising a baby and having good times together and bonding as father and son,” Eric Bruce told Today.com. “And making sure his mom was happy and in the loop after going back to work. … It’s the equivalent of updating her with a picture, but trying to do something a little more special.”

Priscilla says she loves getting the videos, “It just makes me laugh out loud,” she said. “It’s really like a bright spot in my day.”

The funny videos include lip syncing to Dana Carvey’s Choppin’ Broccoli and Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me a River, and Eric says he finds inspiration for his videos in Jack’s ordinary tasks.

Dad shares some valuable advice with Today.com,

“It’s hard raising a baby but none of it is a pain. It’s a treat and it’s all about perspective,” he says. “It’s challenging and tiring and you never know how exhausted you can be. “Those are the moments where you can make a decision to be happy about it or be upset he’s not eating his food,” he added. “I’d prefer to be the person who enjoys the moment.”

That’s definitely some food for thought!

Homeless Dog Nearly Turned To Stone Because She Felt So Unloved

A dog named Petra, (which translates to stone in Greek) was found alone and in poor condition on a street outside Athens, Greece.

A woman spotted the dog, and took a photo of it to post to Facebook, hoping the right people would see it and come to help. But it appeared that the 5-year-old mixed breed dog was sick, afraid and had seemingly never interacted with people before.

Rescuing Petra proved to be extremely difficult, but everyone refused to give up on her. Once she was finally captured, she was brought to Save a Greek Stray shelter in Orpos, Greece, where a woman named Valia Orfanidou would rehabilitate her.

“I think she’s always been a stray because she looked like she had never been around people,” Orfanidou told The Dodo. “Even dogs in that condition, if they’ve been around people are more friendly. Petra looked like she had never been touched.”

Petra suffered from mange, a skin infection that made her skin appear stone-like, and leishmaniasis, an infection spread by bugs that can be deadly if left untreated.

Rehabilitating Petra was very difficult for Orfanidou, who said that Petra never wanted to leave her cage, and that she didn’t trust anybody.

But Orfanidou refused to give up, and every week Petra got a little braver.

“She started wagging her tail and looked willing to play with us, her toys and the other dogs,” Orfanidou said. Petra, the dog who wanted nothing to do with anybody, was now more than ready to be loved.”

Today, Petra is completely unrecognizable, and she has turned into a beautiful and loving dog.

At eight days old, most newborn babies are swaddled up and relaxing in their comfy cribs at home, but these newborn twins, are recovering in the hospital from a surgery that had a 1 percent chance of success.

The triplets were born eight weeks early in the Inselspital hospital in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, and two of the three babies, Lydia and Maya, were conjoined at the liver and the chest.

Originally, doctors planned on waiting until the girls were a few months older to attempt the surgery, which can be risky in an of itself. Yet, Lydia and Maya were facing a life-threatening condition that forced doctors to separate them as soon as possible.

Because one of the twins had too much blood and very high blood pressure, and the other did not have enough blood, the surgery had to happen immediately. At just eight days old, the girls underwent surgery with a 99% chance of failure.

Thanks to a team of 13 doctors and nurses, the five hours surgery was a success, and Lydia and Maya became the youngest conjoined twins to successfully be separated.

“The perfect teamwork of physicians and nursing personnel from various disciplines were the key to success here. We are very happy that the children and parents are faring so well now,” head of paediatric surgery Steffen Berger said.

Kristen Hiebert and her 4-year-old daughter Avery were driving home in Manitoba when their car slid off a highway near a bridge, and they would up rolling into a ditch.

In the accident, Hiebert broke both arms, her neck, her ribs, and also her leg, but she still managed to drag herself to her daughter’s side to keep her warm.

They spent 10 hours huddled together as temperatures dropped to -23 C, and it wasn’t until the next morning that mother and daughter were able to flag down help.

It took them climbing up a steep embankment towards the road to flag down help the next morning, and then they were airlifted to a Winnipeg hospital.

Doctor’s determined that Hiebert’s frostbite was so bad that her feet had to be amputated, which wound up costing the single mom who works two jobs a lot of money.

Luckily, Hiebert has a great friend who set Kristen and her daughter up with a GoFundMe page, which so far has raised over $80,000 to help towards their recovery.

She wrote on the page,

“Last Wednesday it was decided that the frostbite on Kristen’s feet was too severe. Kristen had both feet amputated above the ankle. There were and are many emotions that overwhelm the family, but the support shown by all of you kept them strong.”

And as for Avery, the page revealed that she is “doing wonderful” and has already been discharged from the hospital, only suffering from frostbite to one foot.

Meerkats are curious creatures native to the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa, and true to form, these newborn meerkat pups are curiously exploring the new world around them.

On January 7th, two meerkat pups were born at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for the first time in seven years. However, these furry little creatures have just started venturing out of the warmth and comfort of their nest to explore the exciting world around them.

“This is all new for them and they learn by observing their mum and dad, so we’re very lucky that Nairobi and Maputo are proving to be fantastic and attentive first-time parents,” said Courtney Mahony, a keeper at the meerkat exhibit. “Nairobi is letting the pups suckle and grooming them at the right times and Maputo protects them, huddles over them and curls up with them at night.”

“They were initially a little wary of this big new world outside, but with a bit of encouragement from mum and dad they started to explore,” Courtney said.

Now, the young babies are starting to show their curious sides, and already have their own personalities. “Our male is the bigger of the two and he’s more adventurous and inquisitive, while the female is quieter and prefers to stay close to mum,” Courtney said.

When it comes to our loyal animal protectors, people tend to think it’s only “guard dogs” who get to scare away the bad guys.

However, the following shocking story out of Turkey proves that when a terrifying situation arises, our feline companions can be just as courageous in the face of danger.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, a man from Diyarbakir has been sentenced to 7.5 years in jail for a crime he thankfully wasn’t able to follow through with. An 18-year-old woman identified only as H.T. says her step-nephew, a 20-year-old man known as S.B., attempted to rape her in 2014.

“I was faced with a villain, a pervert. He could have killed me,” the woman told Hurriyet Daily News, but luckily, she wasn’t home alone.

[Daily Sabah]
[Daily Sabah]
“My cat saved my life by attacking him. She is my hero,” she said of her beloved cat, Minnoş, who was rescued as a newborn kitten and a gift from her husband.

Daily Sabah reported that the H.T. was having breakfast with the man when he told her they could have a relationship together, since they weren’t blood-related.

Then the conversation quickly turned ugly and her sister’s son-in-law attacked her.

[Hurriyet Daily News]
[Hurriyet Daily News]
“Minnoş sees me as her mother,” H.T. said. So when the white Angora cat saw her pet parent struggle, she jumped on S.B. and gave her owner time to escape the sexual abuser until police arrived.

“People say cats are ungrateful. But in fact it is people who are ungrateful. Animals are loyal.” H.T. said. “She is worth the world to me and she will always be with us.”

Incredible Ultrasound Shows Unborn Baby Giving Mom A Thumbs Up

Soon-to-be Mom Nicole Kim has received a big thumbs up from her unborn baby.

Quite literally the expectant mother has gotten a sign of affirmation from her child. At a recent 20-week ultrasound that occurred last week, Mom’s technician snapped routine photos of the fetus before stumbling upon a quirk she doesn’t come across every day.

“Look, the baby is giving you the thumbs-up,” the technician said, as she zoomed in and quickly took an image of the hand gesture, according to local news source Calgary Sun.

Kim and her husband burst out laughing when they saw how socially savvy their unborn child already was. The baby who is due in June already knows how to give a sign of approval…or maybe he just happened to have his hand in an odd position.

Whatever the case, his parents got a serious kick out of it. “I just thought it was the neatest thing. We just couldn’t stop smiling,” said Kim.

The parents have since framed the photo and put it in their living room. [Credit: Calgary Sun]

The technician, who snapped the photo at the radiology clinic in the Foothills Professional Building, labelled the image ‘THUMBS UP’ and printed it for the happy couple, who’ve since shared it on social media.

As tends to happy with quirky images on social media, the picture has since gone viral, and for good cause. Check out this awesome picture of an unborn child giving a thumbs up:

Last week, a woman was walking in Los Angeles when she spotted what appeared to be a sick, injured dog. She contacted the California rescue group Hope for Paws and made them aware that the poor thing was “disoriented and clearly very sick.” However, Hope For Paws picked up on another note that stood out to them: her species.

The “dog” who has since been dubbed Julia was discovered to be a hybrid wolf. Basically, she’s a wolfdog who is part domestic dog that has been bred with one of four other Canis species.

And this poor creature was in some serious need of love:

“This poor girl was so swollen from infections,” said Hope for Paws founder Eldad Hagar. The ratty rope tied around her neck indicated she had a past owner, but it also shows that she wsa neglected to a criminal level, according to Hagar.

Naturally, Julia was wary of humans, but rescuer Lisa Chiarelli sat down near her and began to offer her treats — eventually gaining the hungry animal’s trust.

[Credit: Hope For Paws]

The situation was bad. Upon bringing Julia into the rescue center, they discovered she had scabs, inflammation, and overgrown nails, among other sores. The cleanup process took a long time but it was well worth it.

Now, the poor creature is experiencing some well-deserved love. She was sick to the point of starvation and while her return to health hasn’t been an easy road, it’s a promising one.

South Korea 200 Dogs

As opposed to the U.S., in South Korea, dogs are considered a traditional delicacy, and they have only recently been started to be considered as traditional pets there.

A 61-year-old woman named Jung Myoung Sook is hoping to change that, as she is saving the lives of dogs one-by-one, and bringing them to her shelter in Asan, South Korea

There, Jung shelters more than 200 dogs that she either sees on the streets, or who were in danger of being sold to dog meat farms or restaurants.

Jung has dedicated her life to rescuing and caring for her dogs for the past 26 years, and she’s even had to move seven times due to noise complaints from neighbors.

The dog-rescuer says she currently spends about $1,600 a month caring for and feeding her babies.

“Some people talk about me, saying, ‘Why is that beggar-like middle-aged woman smiling all the time,’ but I just focus on feeding my babies. I’m happy and healthy,” Jung says.

And although some people question whether or not someone as poor as Jung can care for and feed so many dogs, she says, “My babies aren’t hungry. They can play and live freely here.”

Austin is a high school freshman and aspiring sports broadcaster from Albuquerque, New Mexico. This brave boy is also a cancer survivor and inspiration to those still fighting for their lives.

When he was just two years old, doctors discovered a cancerous tumor on Austin’s spinal cord. He went into remission 6 years ago, when he was 8 years old, but life has been far from easy for Austin since.

Due to his cancer treatment, Austin’s growth has been stunted due to radiation, he’s in a wheelchair, and he’s set to have surgery for scoliosis, according to an interview from MaxPreps.

However, these difficulties haven’t stopped Austin from literally shooting for the stars when it comes to his sportscasting dreams.

When doctors found a golf ball-sized cancerous tumor right below 4-year-old George Rios’ brain, everyone was crushed at his terminal diagnosis, but what crushed the little boy the most was the thought that he’d never get to live out his dream of becoming a soldier in the K9 unit in the U.S. Army.

Five years later, the now 9-year-old George is still fighting his terminal illness, and to honor his fight, the U.S. army is making his dreams come true by officially making George an honorary K9 dog handler, and giving the tough fighter his first mission.

This past December, George was sworn in as an Army K9 handler, and recently the U.S. military, Lancaster PetSmart, LA County Sheriff, and For Veterans Sake Foundation came together to create a scenario where George and his Golden Retriever partner Katie would sniff out a suspicious package to save the day.

It’s hard to find someone who’s willing to give up every last penny they’ve ever saved to help someone else, yet when 4-year-old Camden Hand heard one of the teachers at his pre-school was having trouble paying for her cancer treatment, he didn’t think twice to give everything he had.

Over the years, Camden has been dropping in all of his birthday money and loose change into a piggy bank, and managed to save up $105.15. When he heard Betty Payne, one of the teachers at the Good Samaritan Academy preschool in Tallahassee, Florida, was sick with stage 3 lung cancer and struggling to pay the health insurance deductable for her treatments, he got his piggy bank out and asked for dad’s help opening it up.

“He started dumping it out onto the table and he looked up at me and said, ‘How much does Ms. Betty need?'” mom Christie Hand said. “And I said she needs an awful lot, and he said, ‘I have a lot here. She can have it.’ He knew someone was in need and he thought he could help and that was that.”

After counting all the money, Camden put every last cent in a plastic bag and brought it in to school to donate.

“I couldn’t help but to cry,” Payne said. “That this kid, he gave up everything he had for me. That showed me he had a lot of love and goodness in his heart. You don’t find too many kids who want to give up their money.”

So far, 100 families from the school have raised $2,400 for treatments and other expenses, and have even started a Go Fund Me donation page in her honor.

Can you believe this selfless little boy was willing to give every last penny away to help his sick teacher pay for her cancer treatment?

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl and the NFL is gearing up for it’s most-watched event of all time with the big “Golden Game”.

In recent years, the Super Bowl has become more than just a big sporting event…it’s become a holiday in some ways, all about spending time with friends, eating your favorite snack foods, and talking about the commercials.

With the average cost of a Super Bowl 50 ticket costing $4,957, it’s a far cry from the first game in 1967 when the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game” was practically unknown and only cost $10 a ticket.

Yet something about it peaked the interest of 5 friends, who decided to fly out from the East Coast to Los Angeles for the first game on January 15th.

It was the start of a now 50 year tradition for the “Superbowl 5”, a group of five men who share an extraordinary bond that has turned out to be a lot more than just about football.

This Sunday, the men will reunite to watch legendary football star Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos take on 26-year-old quarterback Cam Newton and his Carolina Panthers for their 50th game.

While so much has changed in the NFL and in the world over the past five decades, their story of friendship and dedication shows that sometimes the things that really matter don’t have to.
