What Happens When a Cat Discovers Technology?

“Hmm…this is animal makes a funny noise.”

At least, that’s what I imagine this cat to be thinking as she plays with the antenna of what appears to be an old-fashioned radio. Funniest Video posted this pip-squeak to Youtube and she is certainly confused by the strange sounds being emitted. The radio is squeaking out static as she rubs her nose (and tiny little paws) along the antenna.

While this cutie is intelligent enough to realize that she has some control over what’s happening, her confusion is tangible as she tries to figure out why she has this control. If we know anything about cats though, it’s that they’re stubborn creatures who don’t enjoy new challenges.

Like this cat, who probably wasn’t a 90’s kid:

Or this one, who isn’t eager to make friends with a different species:

And of course, this cat who doesn’t understand the properties of radio static:

Comedian Like Totally Nails The Problem With How We Speak

Have you ever had a conversation with somebody, and then found yourself gradually slipping into the pattern of uptalk because it’s totally whatever, like you know what I’m saying?

If you just read that sentence with the intonation of Cher Horowitz from Clueless, then you are familiar with uptalk. Uptalk is the linguistic trend of speaking with a rising intonation similar to how an American English speaker would ask a question. It’s especially popular among young women and has been criticized and praised, depending on with whom you speak.

Uptalk is just the natural evolution of language.

This is true, and no two conversations are alike. However, as comedian Taylor Mali points out, when we lose our ability to speak with conviction, we lose our authority. He humorously urges us to question how we speak, and I gotta say, he like totally nails it.

Millennials Don’t Want Children: Here Are 5 Reasons Why Not

$

Millennials are selfish, vain, and only interested in going to bottomless brunch.

Please, try telling us something original for a change. We get it, okay. We’re the tech-obsessed, selfie-posting, entitled generation. We don’t want to work, move out of our parents house, get married, and now there’s another selfish check point we can add to that list: we don’t want children.

According to a study conducted by the Urban Institute, Millennial births in the United States are lower than any previous generation. The Atlantic reported in an April article that as of 2012, “there were only 948 births per 1,000 women in their 20s.”  While that number may sound high, it’s actually the slowest rate of any previous generation of women and it’s continuing to go down. In 2007, the number was 1,118 per 1,000 women.

There’s a stigma that people who don’t want children and refuse to pass on their genes are selfish, (after all, it is our evolutionary purpose to create the next generation). But, contrary to this popular judgement, a recent survey conducted by Mic examined the reasons millennials are failing to reproduce, and the respondent’s brutally honest answers stem from a place of selflessness.

1. Kids are highly expensive, especially for those still paying student loans.

One of the most popular reasons respondents gave for not wanting children was due to the financial burden. When you choose to reproduce, you will have a financial burden clinging to your back for the next 18 year (though if we’re being honest, it’ more like 22). Respondents said they didn’t think this financial burden would be possible with the way the economy is going and many specifically cited student loans as a reason they wouldn’t be able to afford kids. The average 2015 graduate with a bachelor’s degree fro a 4-year university is in $35,000 of debt. That financial burden will be hanging over our heads well into our 30s, so taking on the burden of children will be a huge financial strain to add to the huge pool of debt we’re already swimming in.

2. We’re terrified of passing on mental health issues.

Our generation is either the most mentally unstable generation to date, or we are simply the most aware. Either way, we recognize that many of us are unhealthy. It’s extremely common to hear people discussing their anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bi-polar disorders, and substance abuse that all seem to be rampant among individuals. These issues are often hereditary and when examining the family of somebody who suffers from a mental disorder, we often see the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

One respondent said, “I am mentally ill and mental illnesses than mine run in my family, as do autoimmune disorders. I do not want to bring a child into the world knowing that there’s a strong chance it will struggle like I have.” That’s a far from selfish reason for choosing not to have a child.

According to the Kim Foundation, about 1 our of every 4 Americans suffers from a diagnosable mental illness in a given year, so it’s not bizarre that Millennials are afraid of passing these disorders on to their children.

3. The population is already spiraling our of control.

The world population is growing at a rate of about 1.13% a year and at one point peaked at 2% a year. While there is debate over what the future holds for population increase, the numbers are certainly going up. More people and overpopulation means environmental and health issues as well as limited resources. Some respondents said that there are already too many unwanted children in the world, so why add more? Some did say however that if they did choose to take care of a child, they felt that adopting an unwanted child would be more beneficial than having their own.

4. Millennials would rather have a career than a child.

While many people believe that they can “have it all,” by raising a family while working a full-time job, there’s recently been some discussion that this is a myth. Ultimately, juggling the responsibilities of children while working 40 or more hours a week is extremely stressful and one or both will probably take the back seat at some point. Millennials are taking realistic approaches to this idea and are choosing to sacrifice having a child in order to have a job they’ve already invested in with thousands of dollars of school. Additionally, many of us are furthering our education past a bachelor’s degree. As of 2013, 36 million people were enrolled in a graduate program. With so much school under your belt, why not devote your whole life to that passion you choose to pursue?

5. Sometimes, it really is due to selfishness

Kinda…many respondents said that a child wouldn’t fit their lifestyle. A number of people said that while having children wouldn’t interfere with their career, they simply didn’t want them and knew a child would create an unnecessary burden in a busy lifestyle they enjoy.

“My dream is to visit all 195 countries in the world (been to 23 so far) and I really don’t feel like a child fits into the nomad lifestyle I want to live,” one respondent said. Another answered that with the way they chose to live, “kids would get in the way.” And another simply said, “[kids] are a f*ckton of work.”

Is this selfish? Is it really that self-absorbed to know exactly the way you want to live your life and refuse to take on a burden you’d rather not have to deal with? Is it more selfish to try for a child even if you aren’t certain you want one, but “I mean, hey, everybody else is doing it so I probably should too, right?”

After all, raising kids is a breeze, right?

Emilie & Ogden sure has quite a style.

Emilie and Odgen consists of the musical duo, Emilie Khan and her harp Odgen. (Why have a harp without a name?) The harpist and singer covered Taylor Swift’s moving love song “Style,” but she gave it her own unique flair. The talented musician slowed down the original version and played it solely on the harp, turning it into a majestic and ethereal piece that sounds like it came from heaven above.

The piece was so good that it even got approval from the goddess herself, Taylor Swift. Our beloved Tay has been known to tweet approval to her fans who give her songs justice when they cover them.

For good reason too. Listen to how amazing this song sounds:

Who knew hedgehogs even made any noise?

According to my trusty friend Wikipedia, “hedgehogs are fairly vocal and communicate through a combination of grunts, snuffles and/or squeals, depending on species,” though this one is taking it to a whole new level.

Before we watch the video posted by shalicat, let’s try to guess why the hedge hog is screaming like a baby. Let’s examine the possibilities, shall we?

He’s scared of making new friends:

The future is officially upon us!

If you were worried that technology isn’t advancing as quickly as you’d like, you’re wrong. We now carry around artificial intelligence in our pockets, as book hotel rooms by pressing a few buttons with our fingers, and oh yeah, those hotels have robots that deliver room service–at least, one of them does.

If you find yourself ordering room service from the Aloft hotel in Cupertino, California, you might be surprised by the person bringing you your delivery–or should I say the thing. That’s because Aloft uses a very special kind of butler. Known as the Butlr, “employs” an autonomous robot that will bring guests small items they may have forgotten, like toothbrushes, razors, and yogurt.

There’s nothing cuter than a robot that calls its own elevator.

The friendly looking robot will roam the halls making deliveries to guests and asking about the service. It’s a novelty the guests love, Derrick Agas, front desk supervisor told Computer World. Despite Hollywood’s repeated dystopian films about the horror of robots, guests are loving these guys. They take selfies with them, post videos, and even send their kids to give it a letter, according to Agas.

One family was staying here and their daughter really wanted to see it work. She loved it so much she wrote a letter. When she walked up to it, I opened the door so she dropped the letter inside and I hit the shimmy button so it did a little dance for her. She had the biggest smile on her face.

Yup, first they lore us in with room service and cute dances, and then they kill humanity (with kindness). Seriously though, after a year of service, Agas said they have never had a single complaint about a creepy autonomous robot delivering food and toiletries. Instead, people love the novelty, which is garnering the hotel quite a bit of attention.

Watch how the adorable robot was sent on a mission to deliver yogurt:

This little boy from North Carolina has some insanely impressive dance moves.

Jonah Jacomet has dance moves that would rival MJ himself. The young dancer is autistic and loves Michael Jacksons way of dancing in a way that goes just beyond interest. His mother, Edie Jacomet, said he will watch Michael Jackson dance videos for hours at a time, practicing and repeating the moves himself.

In fact Jonah has gotten so good at mimicking the king of pop that he won a talent show recently. Edie said Jonah didn’t even have to practice for the talent competition. Because Jonah already practices so frequently, he just got up on stage and did what he always does: he danced.

While Jonah’s obsession with Michael Jackson and dancing may sound a little bit odd, its actually completely normal for anybody who is on the autistic spectrum. Obsessive behavior and compulsive interests come with the disorder and while they can be hinderances, they can also manifest into incredible talents.

For young Jonah, his obsession with moonwalking and mimicking MJ has made him a better dancer than most of Hollywood. You have to watch these INSANE dance moves:

If you found Jonah as inspiring as we have, please bring a smile to your friends and family and SHARE this child’s talent.

At some point for many people, birthdays become less of an excuse to celebrate and more of a reminder that you’re getting old.

When Flossie Dickey, a resident at a Washington senior home, turned 110 years old, she was ‘not one bit’ happy about the occasion and being interviewed about it. “How do you think you’d feel if you were 110?” Flossie said to interviewer Nichole Mischke.

During the interview, Flossie was less than thrilled to have a camera in her face, but revealed that she enjoys taking naps whenever she can. “I am tired. I take a nap as many times as I can,” the great-great-grandmother said.

bear and crow

In this incredible video filmed at Budapest Zoo, a large brown bear named Kali is shown having a very strange encounter with desperate crow.

Kali was simply enjoying his meal of apples and carrots when he noticed a crow struggling to get out of the water. Kali approached the crow and to everyone’s surprise he reached in, grabbing the crow by this feathers, and pulled him out of the water.

At this point, one would think that Kali would devour the poor crow, but to everyone’s surprise, he didn’t eat him! He walked back over to enjoying his fruits and let the relieved crow be and able to live another day.

We’re not sure what happened later on, but for this brief moment, the bear showed that wild animals do exhibit odd behaviors from time to time.

Was it compassion? Was it that he just wasn’t hungry for crow? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

When Brady Lucas was just 8 years old, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, he entered the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital to start treatment. But soon his family struggled to pay for the costly medical bills.

Luckily, Four Diamonds, a charity that helps families pay for the treatment costs of the pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. As if there weren’t already enough reasons to indulge in some decadent chocolate, a new study is proving there’s another incredible reason you should being eating this sweet treat.

According to a study published in the journal Appetite, researchers studied the data that had been collected that measured people’s dietary intake and measured cognitive function and found an interesting link between chocolate consumption and brain functions.

Surprisingly, they found that the people who ate chocolate more frequently performed better on a series of tests compared to people who did not eat chocolate.  “More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on (tests, including) visual-spatial memory and organization, working memory, scanning and tracking, abstract reasoning and the mini-mental state examination,” researchers said. They even suggest that eating chocolate regularly could help prevent the natural cognitive decline that occurs with age.

We’ve long known about the connection and effects food has on our bodies and mind, as previous research proves chocolate can reduce fevers, treat diarrhea in children, encourage sleep, clean teeth, decrease PMS symptoms, and increase breast-milk production.

However, before you go out and stock your shelves with your favorite chocolate bars, you should know these benefits only occur when eating dark chocolate, which is higher in flavonoids, instead of milk or white chocolate.

Take a look at the video below to find out more about your favorite treat that just got a little bit sweeter!

Rare Pearl Harbor Photo

Every American remembers that fateful day on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese war machine launched a surprise, well-ordinated attack on American Naval forces at Pearl Harbor. The attacks went down as one of the worst tragedies to befall the American Navy in its history, and paved the way for the dropping of two atom bombs by the Americans on Japanese cities. So poignant were the events at Pearl Harbor that it was the preface for America joining the second world war.

The Pearl Harbor offensive started at exactly 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time, and dealt a deadly blow to eight U.S. battleships stationed in the harbor there, as well as destroying three U.S. cruisers, and three destroyers.

The cost to human life was a painful one for the Americans and an estimated 2,400 sailors and other military personnel were killed by the Japanese, while an additional 1.170 were injured to varying degrees.

The images you will see in this gallery offer a rare insight into the events that took place at Pearly Harbor more than 70 years ago…

prom 2

Asking your crush to go to prom with you can be a nerve-racking moment in any teen’s life.

You don’t know if that person is going to accept your invitation or not, and it can be really scary putting to put yourself out there.

When we came across this video on Facebook of this young couple with down syndrome, we knew we had to share it. The nervous boy decided to ask his crush Erin to go to prom with him by writing the question on his shirt in different colored markers, and leaving room for her to either check either ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

When Erin saw what he had done for her, she was overjoyed, and immediately checked ‘yes.’

The deal wouldn’t be sealed though without a kiss, and when Erin asked her parents “Can I kiss him?” our hearts melted! The two then locked lips for a little too long that their parents had to yell, “Ok, save it for the prom.”

It was a really beautiful moment.

Every parent knows life drastically changes when you have kids. And whether they like it or not, they will inevitably change, too.

You think differently when you have children, especially the young ones. You do things you never thought you would and are put in situations you never thought you would be in. You stop thinking of just yourself. When you become a parent, you will likely put your kids first no matter what, even if the consequences are tragic.

Twenty-four-year-old Demetrius Johnson of Buffalo, NY proved himself as a true father and hero when the new apartment he shared with his fiancee and three young children became engulfed in flames in the middle of the night.

Military animals risk their lives to serve their country just like any soldier, so when they retire, they too deserve to be looked after and cared for instead of becoming homeless and neglected.

Caisson horses Quincy and Kennedy are highly trained horses who served in the Army’s Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. For eight hours each day, every other week, these two helped bring home America’s fallen soldiers by pulling their coffins during their at Arlington. However, now Quincy and Kennedy are retired and are looking for suitable homes.

“These guys did their service,” Staff Sgt. David Smith said. “It’s their time to be a horse.”

“I think one of the reasons to own a horse like Quincy or Kennedy is to have a piece in this mission,” Pfc. Kris Loudner, one of the caisson riders, said. “In a way, you’re tending to a horse that has honored America’s service members.”

Connecticut Becomes The Second State To Officially End Veteran Homelessness

Soldiers put their life on the line, and are willing to sacrifice everything to protect loved ones and total strangers alike. Yet in January 2015, there were nearly 50,000 homeless veterans across America on any given night.

Veterans are at an increased risk of homelessness since they can have difficulty transitioning back into normal civilian life, especially if they’ve experienced traumatic injuries or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Thankfully, the percentage of homeless veterans have been dropping since communities and states across the country have begun working to end homelessness in the group that deserves to be respected and cared for, not forgotten.

Over the past few years, the percentage of homeless veteran has dropped, and now Connecticut has just become the second state after Virginia to officially end veteran homelessness for good.

“We signed on in 2014 that we would end homelessness amongst veterans by the end of last year,” Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy said. “And we did it.”

To officially end homelessness for veterans, Connecticut now is able to find housing for any future homeless vets within 90 days, and has more veterans exiting homelessness than entering. This program ensures that future cases of homeless veterans are “rare, brief, and non-recurring.”

Mom Gives Birth With The Help Of The Nurse That Delivered Her 25 Years Ago

A nurse might be a complete stranger, but they’re the people who are there for you every step of the way in both the happiest and hardest moments in your life.

As a little girl, Brittany Ellard Perryman’s mother, Dawn, used to tell her the story of her birth at the Brookwood Hospital in 1990, and the angel nurse who helped her in the most painful yet most incredible moment.

“She was terrified,” Brittany said, “…but it was all okay, because Daphney was there. She was an angel to my mom, and mom said she wouldn’t have made it without Daphney.”

Dawn remembers how her nurse, Daphney Jones Walker, saved the day by caring for her and never leaving her as no family members were at the hospital when Brittany was finally born.

25 years later, Brittany arrived at the same hospital she was born in to give birth to her daughter Caroline. When Daphney heard Brittany was in the hospital, she came to see Brittany and told her she would be staying with her to deliver her daughter.

When Dawn walked into the room, she was stunned to see Daphney sitting with her daughter. “I said, ‘Mom I have a surprise for you!’ and then Daphney turned around and my mom knew immediately who it was,” Brittany said.

Brittany later turned to Facebook to recount the incredible moment and thank Daphney and nurses who work so tirelessly for their patients. “I want her to have evidence of all the lives she has touched… I know a lot of nurses shadow her, and I want them to see that if you take care of and love your patients, you can change their lives,” Brittany wrote.

After seeing the post, Daphney responded in the most touching way. “…it is all of you who make my day. I get to share such an important day with so many precious, wonderful families. That is a blessing I thank Jesus for all of the time! The delivery that prompted this post will stand out as one of the most precious and memorable of my career.”

What was this guy thinking?! While we would never wish a shark bite on our worst enemies, we have to admit that if the jerk in this following video had gotten bit, we wouldn’t be shocked… or feel sorry for him!

As you can see in this horrific video of people pulling a baby dolphin out of the water to take a selfie, no good can come from messing with a helpless animal. Call it all in good fun or what you wish, but touching, teasing, and removing an animal from its natural habitat in any way is animal cruelty.

Just days after the baby dolphin death incident, another bonehead is making headlines for a disgraceful act on the shores of Palm Beach, Florida.

After reeling in the roughly 4-5 foot blacktip shark, an unknown fisherman can be seen in the video below wrestling the big catch before snapping photos with it. Local reporter Ashleigh Walters posted the footage on Facebook, sparking outrage from people everywhere.

“Line should have been cut and shark released right away with none of the BS”, one commenter wrote, while most people just called the unknown fisherman bad names and said they’ve lost hope for mankind.

Unfortunately, this type of animal cruelty happens more often in Florida, where shark fishing is a popular sport. “There’s nothing legally wrong with this,” Dr. Stephen Kajiura of FAU told WPTV, according to NBC Miami.

However, he said, this behavior can be doing internal harm to the shark or fish. “It looks like it swims away just fine, but it might be swimming away with a ruptured liver, for example.”
