Tattoos have been getting increasingly more popular since the beginning of the new Millennium and we’ve seen all sorts of trends.
The artistic folk have experimented with watercolor tattoos while those who fear finality and commitment have taken to white ink tattoos. However, a new trend is on the rise, and It’s rather intimidating.
Eyeball tattoos have developed recently and it they have both a look of fantasy to them, and a Devilish aura.
The process is done over a series of sessions in which a tattoo artist injects ink into the eye.
The technique, which has slowly been modified through the years by tattoo artists, involves injecting pigment directly into the eyeball so it rests under the eye’s thin top layer, or conjunctiva. It takes several injections to completely cover the sclera, which is then colored for life, according to the BBC.
Kylie Garth, who underwent this procedure, described it by saying, “it feels like somebody is poking at your eye, then it feels like you have a bit of sand in your eye.”
The man who first experimented with injecting ink into eyeballs is a tattoo artist named Luna Cobra. Cobra’s original goal was not to look like Lucifer. Rather, he was attempting to look like the blue-eyed characters from the cult science fiction film, Dune. Cobra told the BBC he took a syringe one day and starting experimenting on three extremely brave volunteers.
“I’m aware of how insane that sounds, but I’ve been doing this type of thing for my whole life so I wasn’t coming from nowhere with this,” Cobra said.
“If you want to amuse yourself by decorating your eyeball, why not do it?” said Cobra. “I do a lot of things that look like tie-dye or ‘cosmic space‘. I think it brings a realm of fantasy into everyday life.”
To each his own. Personally, I’d like to keep my sclera so white you’ll think they can’t dance.
