While the first thought of this may seem extremely terrifying, it is happening, as DARPA, the U.S. Government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is working on a new device called a “cortical modem.”
This “cortical modem” will be implanted into your DNA and visual cortex to show a heads-up display of your computer in your mind, except without the computer. This modem would enable images to be transmitted directly into your mind, bypassing your optical system altogether.
The primary use of this “cortical modem” appears to be replicating the internet function of Google Glass without the glasses.
If you haven’t already seen them, Google Glass is a headset that you wear like a pair of eyeglasses that has a small prism-like screen tucked into the upper corner of the frame that keeps you constantly plugged in to your e-mail, calls and other notifications.
DARPA has taken it up by many notches by deciding to build a Google Glass that plugs straight into your brain, eliminating the optical factor. According to DARPA’s previous director, Regina Dugan, “Darpa is not the place of dreamlike musings or fantasies, not a place for self-indulging in wishes and hopes. DARPA is a place of doing.”
This “cortical modem” would not only enable your brain to operate like a computer, it would also help restore sight to the blind, replace all current virtual reality technology, and grant telepathy.
For anyone who wears glasses, this would make everyone’s eyesight perfect, eliminating the need for glasses, and the deterioration of vision that comes with age.
The fact that DARPA has played a huge role in the invention of the internet, makes this invention not just an idea, or speculation, but a complete reality.
This is a long-term project however, according to Peter Rothman, the editor of h+ magazine who attended DARPA’s two-day gathering in Silicon Valley, saying that it requires a genetic alteration of the DNA in your neurons, and the health implications are unknown.
A very interesting thing about DARPA is that their mission statement has evolved over time. Today, DARPA’s mission is still to prevent technological surprise to the U.S., but also to create technological surprise for our enemies.
