Seven horses are alive today thanks to the quick-thinking of a local search and recovery team in Ballymacegan Island in Ireland.
One can only imagine how cold the waters of River Shannon must be during this time of year, as the team of heroes from Athlone Sub Aqua Club noted the endangered horses you can see below in the distance would have never survived the night.

According to TheJournal.ie, the seven large horses became trapped on Ballymacegan Island, which is on the border of Tipperary and Galway, as the tide quickly rose on the River Shannon.
As you can see in the video below, the horses were stuck in about 3-4 feet of water and were unable to save themselves from the rapid rush of water. That’s when the horses owner called the scuba club to help.

Search and Recovery Coordinator Liam Sherringham told TheJournal.ie “With the help of our rescue boat and Jetski, and a large number of our divers in drysuits, we successfully swam the horses off the island and over to the Galway shore.” Sherringham said the horses were visibly cold and distressed when the heroes arrived and that the dramatic rescue could have easily ended in tragedy.
“Once the horses had rested on the Galway shore, they were taken away by lorry and thankfully are in a warm stable.” Sherringham said.
