In an alternate universe, James Bond uses this method to open every bottle of wine.
This is one of those times when we get to say, don’t try this at home, kids (and by kids I mean the wine-loving adults reading this). Jonathan Ross is a sommelier at Eleven Madison Park. If you’re like me and you have no idea what a sommelier does, Wikipedia told me it’s a steward of wine, which is a pretty cool job description for your LinkedIn page.
Ross demonstrates in the video the old-school technique of heating up a pair of tongs, sticking them to the glass bottle, and then rapidly cooling the bottle with ice, causing the neck to break. The tactic is to get just the right amount of fine glass shards in the wine for an extra kick of flavor (just kidding–that causes internal bleeding).
If you’re going to try this at home, please try to avoid lighting the house on fire, and remember to stay classy.
