Engineering Students Invent a Device That Puts Out Fires Using Sound

Imagine that you were able to put out a fire just by a device that emits a simple sound? This would save the lives of many firefighters, and all you would need was a drone.

While this hasn’t happened yet, it is certainly the wish of these two engineering students from Virginia’s George Mason University that it will. They invented a device that uses low-frequency bass sound waves instead of liquid to put out flames.

It is truly a revolutionary fire extinguisher, and it’s hypothesized that the sound waves emitted, increase the velocity of air particles in and around the fire, basically suffocating it.

To work, the device needs to be held about a foot away from the flames, which is a much safer distance than traditionally used to fight a fire.

These students hope one day their fire extinguisher can be attached to a drone, in which forest fires would be extinguished, without risking human lives.
