A mountain lion once destined to spend his entire life chained as a prisoner of criminals now finally has the freedom he’s always longed for.
For two decades, mountain lion Mufasa was kept chained in the back of a truck as a prisoner of a circus troupe in Peru.
One look at the animal and you can see how exhausted and hopeless he’s become after a lifetime of abuse.

Thankfully, local police teamed up with the amazing heroes of Animal Defenders International, a London-based group on a mission to rescue animals in danger and end abuse, to save Mufasa once and for all.

In the video below, we see the heroes break Mufasa’s chains and take him away from the monsters that have deprived him of a life in the wild.
According to the ADI website, Mufasa succumbed to health problems like liver failure and passed away just weeks after his rescue at the refuge he was transferred to.
“We are so sad he did not enjoy more time in his forest habitat,” they wrote. “But the real tragedy would have been if he had never experienced that freedom at all.”
