Most of us have never known the woes of being homeless.
While we have all probably had the experience of walking down the street on a frigid night in winter, we haven’t had to sleep in that biting cold, curled up under tattered blankets and old newspapers.
However, over 600,000 Americans go through this experience every single night, whether in the cold of winter or the sweltering heat of summer. This information comes from Hud Exchange, which conducts a study every January counting data for housing inventory. It also counts those who are on the street, and while most of these people don’t stay on the street for a long time, any night spent there is a miserable one.
However, a Seattle church is making a change.
With the help of donors, the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd has built 14 shelters on their ground to provide temporary storage space and warm showers for their homeless population. For once, these people will have a safe place to spend multiple nights.
This video outlines how the church will be helping the homeless. The shelters are meager, but the ripple effects of this project might better many lives:
Homelessness has been gaining more awareness in recent years. App designers in Cincinnati designed a way to fight homelessness with an app and inspiring stories like this one, make us aware of people who care about the homeless.
Fortunately, we are becoming more concerned and looking for solutions to a problem that has existed for too long. If you want others to learn about how we’re fighting homelessness, please SHARE with friends and family.
