Expecting mom Rikki Bennett was not at all prepared for the real-life emergency that started to unfold in her grandmother’s Wodonga home on Friday night.

Bennett describes having contractions at about 2pm on Friday, but after being assured by her doctor that the baby was still two days away, she was given pain meds and returned back to her grandmother’s home.

It wasn’t until 11pm that night that Bennett awoke to massive pain and was screaming. “The last thing I remembered was walking out to the car [from the doctor],” she said. “An hour and a half later I woke up screaming.”

Both her mother, Jan and daughter Summah, 13 were also present in grandma’s home, and Jan immediately ran to the phone to call for an ambulance.  The problem was when Jan went to ring the ambulance, she didn’t have her glasses on so couldn’t see to dial!

Great-grandma Looker immediately stepped in, as there was no time to wait for the ambulance to arrive. The baby was coming out now, and he was about to be delivered in great-grandma’s bedroom!

Luckily for Rikki, her grandma had delivered babies before, but never a human baby. Looker is off a dairy farm so she was used to delivering calves, lambs, dogs and cats.

Grandma describes, “I’ve had five babies of my own and none like that.”

And this was not an easy delivery as baby Logan was born inside his amniotic sac, which only happens once in around 80,000 births! Looker says, “He was blue and I put him on my left hand and patted him on the back.” Looker then calmly peeled the sac over Logan’s head before discovering the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck twice and also had to be carefully released.

“After a little bit, he cried and it was the best sound I’ve heard in my entire life,” she says.

Mother and son then went to the hospital after the birth, and Logan Peter weighed in at 3.2 kilograms. Mrs. Looker believes that Logan wouldn’t have survived if Rikki had tried to make it to the hospitalRikki says, “[Grandma] was remarkably cool in a crisis. She was absolutely amazing and there is nothing she can’t do.”

Logan is Looker’s 15th great-grandchild, and she says, “I only hope I live to hear him talk. He will be special, but I won’t love him any more than the others.”
