When it comes to our loyal animal protectors, people tend to think it’s only “guard dogs” who get to scare away the bad guys.

However, the following shocking story out of Turkey proves that when a terrifying situation arises, our feline companions can be just as courageous in the face of danger.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, a man from Diyarbakir has been sentenced to 7.5 years in jail for a crime he thankfully wasn’t able to follow through with. An 18-year-old woman identified only as H.T. says her step-nephew, a 20-year-old man known as S.B., attempted to rape her in 2014.

“I was faced with a villain, a pervert. He could have killed me,” the woman told Hurriyet Daily News, but luckily, she wasn’t home alone.

“My cat saved my life by attacking him. She is my hero,” she said of her beloved cat, Minnoş, who was rescued as a newborn kitten and a gift from her husband.

Daily Sabah reported that the H.T. was having breakfast with the man when he told her they could have a relationship together, since they weren’t blood-related.

Then the conversation quickly turned ugly and her sister’s son-in-law attacked her.

“Minnoş sees me as her mother,” H.T. said. So when the white Angora cat saw her pet parent struggle, she jumped on S.B. and gave her owner time to escape the sexual abuser until police arrived.

“People say cats are ungrateful. But in fact it is people who are ungrateful. Animals are loyal.” H.T. said. “She is worth the world to me and she will always be with us.”
