Owner Meghan Holmes was walking her golden retriever, Skye around an arboretum at Penn State University during a snowstorm Monday night, when she let him off the leash and suddenly he vanished.

Completely distraught, and knowing that Skye couldn’t have gone far, Meghan and her husband Ron Holmes went back to the area where Skye vanished on Tuesday morning. Ron knew there were many sinkholes in central Pennsylvania, so he began to scream for the dog, but heard only gushing water. The couple returned on Wednesday, and this time, Skye’s bark greeted them when they called her name.

“It was the most fantastic feeling hearing her,” Ron Holmes said. “I thought she would have drowned if she was somewhere down there or suffered hypothermia.”

Skye wound up falling into a Volkswagen buggy-sized hole, where the opening was only 18 inches wide.

An assistant chief with the Alpha Fire Company climbed down a ladder a hooked Skye to a harness (that they constructed on the fly), and eventually pulled her out of the hole.

“[Skye] kind of sensed what was happening and was very cooperative,” regional fire director Steve Bair said.

Her owners were so happy that Skye was safe, and so was she.
