12. Looks like: tree roots
What it really is: Spring temperatures cause carbon-dioxide ice in the polar caps to sublimate into the atmosphere leaving behind starburst patterns.

11. Looks like: a tattoo
What it really is: A picture of dust devils which shows the tracks in which they trace the sandy surface of Mars.

10. Looks like: a snow maze
What it really is: Summer temperatures cause the ice on the Mars’ north pole to melt, revealing a cracked and bare surface underneath.

9. Looks like: animal footprints
What it really is: Pockets in the summer on Mars’ north pole where ice disappeared and wind blew away the loose dust and dirt underneath.

8. Looks like: a weird eye ball
What it really is: Frost on Mars’ polar caps made of carbon dioxide, forming due to spring weather.

7. Looks like: a mix between a spider web and honeycomb

6. Looks like: intestines
What it really is: Part of a maze on Mars called Noctis Labyrinthus, which means “labyrinth of the night.”

5. Looks like: a ghost
What it really is: A towering dust devil in the Amazonia Planitia region on Mars, that is about 100 feet across and more than half a mile high.

What it really is: A sand dune called barchan formed on Mars’ Hellas impact basin when Martian winds blew in the same direction for a long period of time.

3. Looks like: an ocean that froze and turned to rock
What it really is: Scientists are actually unsure of this, but they suspect that these gullies either formed from flowing water, liquid carbon dioxide, or something else.

What it really is: A very eroded portion of the Aram Chaos region on Mars, in which the strips of color indicate a change in the chemical properties of the rock.

What it really is: Sand dunes on Mars’ Proctor Crater, an area that holds some of the first sand dunes ever discovered on Mars.
