In places like New York and California, boring salads are quickly being replaced with ‘power bowls’ filled with vegetables, whole grains and protein.
They’re more filling than salads, but lower in carbs than sandwiches, and they’re popping up everywhere in New York. Hotspots like, Jack’s Wife Freda, Sweetgreen and Egg Shop have ‘power bowls’ on the menu, and they are a perfect option for people who want to eat healthy but still want to feel full.
These bowls are “based on macrobiotics- this perfectly balanced plate with whole grains, lots of vegetables, some type of protein, some type of crunch, [and] a really amazing dressing,” says Lily Kunin, a health coach who lives in Chelsea New York.
Besides the fact that they have awesome ingredients, the fact that they’re in a bowl makes them more satisfying.
Kunin told the NY Post, “I’ve eaten the same meal on a plate,” she says. “It just wasn’t that good.”
“You can combine so many different flavors and textures that it just creates this really satisfying meal. It’s almost like a hug, as corny as that sounds,” Kunin continued.
And Vanessa Packer, founder of modelfit exercise studio in New York agrees. “Rather than a plate where you’re constantly pushing everything to the middle, a bowl brings everything together. You can coat everything in dressing and make a better bite.”
The most powerful ‘Power Bowl’ is said to consist of: 15 percent lean protein, 25 percent whole grains, 35 percent vegetables, 10 percent sauce, 30 percent extras (e.g., nuts, seeds, sprouts, or smugness).
And according to Charles Spence, an expert in the psychology of taste at the University of Oxford, when it comes to crockery, all kinds of factors can come into play. “I certainly believe that the plateware we use to eat from plays a role in what things tastes like. Everything from the texture, the temperature or the feel or the plateware or bowl can fit into this.”
Do you agree with these opinions? Do you think eating from a bowl instead of a plate makes a difference?
