Shipwrecks help to fill in some of the unwritten pages of history. Naval history is full of fatal accidents and wartime losses. Even knowing that, it’s astonishing to think that, according to a United Nations report, there are more than 3 million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, many of them unexplored and invisible forever.

1. Costa Concordia, lies off the island of Giglio, Italy

The once-gleaming white luxury liner capsized and sank off the holiday island of Giglio in January 2012 after sailing too close to shore. Its wreck has remained there ever since, as engineers embarked on one of the largest maritime salvage operations in history. An investigation focused on shortcomings in the procedures followed by the crew and the actions of the Italian captain, who allegedly left the ship prematurely.
