As the co-founder of Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary in King, Ontario, Danielle Eden is no stranger to seeing dogs in dire situations.
She has visited countless animal shelters from around the world, and has even taken dogs with her to her rescue’s own 50-acre property. But when Eden visited a shelter in Israel last January, she wasn’t prepared for what she was about to see.
The Dodo describes that every last dog was in desperate straits.
“This is the worse shelter she has ever seen,” Clare Forndran, media director for Dog Tales said. Over 250 dogs were squeezed into a space designed for to hold 70, and rats ran rampant.
Many of the dogs spent years there and they would offer fight over food. “Dogs were literally fighting over a loaf of bread,” Forndran says. “There were more rats than dogs.”

As Eden surveyed the scene, she couldn’t choose which dogs to bring back to her rescue, since all were in need, so she did something really unexpected.
Eden decided to buy the entire shelter and take responsibility for all 250 dogs.

Over the last two months, Dog Tales relocated 90 dogs within Israel, and another 25 made it over to the sanctuary. Although 150 remain, the shelter is undergoing a transformation thanks to a team in Israel assigned the task of making it habitable. And veterinarians are there to tend to the dog’s most immediate health concerns.
Dog Tales told The Dodo that the goal is to bring all the remaining dogs to Canada, and that mission is off to a great start. Out of the 25 dogs they brought back to Canada, half of them have already been adopted.
