Unexpected and messy winter weather can cause countless problems for anyone who needs to travel, but for one Southern family, a February storm almost meant losing their little girl forever.

Two-year-old Brooklyn Faris of Memphis, TN suffers from Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that can affect the liver, heart, and other parts of the body, and often results in liver damage. For more than a year of her young life, when Brooklyn was adopted from China, she has desperately needed a liver transplant.

When one finally became available at Lurie’s Childrens Hospital in Chicago, Jessica and Nick Faris were overjoyed, until reality set in that a winter storm would make travelling the 500 miles seemingly impossible.

With hundreds of flights cancelled due to a snowstorm in the midwest, a family friend posted on Facebook about Brooklyn needing to get to the hospital by 10AM the next morning. The post caused such an uproar on social media that Memphis-based company FedEx caught wind of Brooklyn’s race against the clock.

Since FedEx pilots determine travel on a case by case basis, the company decided ignore weather warnings and send Brooklyn and her parents on of their cargo planes and save her life.

FedEx didn’t ask the Faris family for a dime, either. “We love that FedEx stepped up and helped us,” Jessie Faris told NBC Chicago. “What a generous gift that came at just the right time.”
