In a world where you are made to feel like tests define you, one teacher is letting her students know they are more than a standardized test score.

On the day before her Pleasant Crossing Elementary School students were scheduled to take their ISTEP exam, this teacher left a really encouraging note on their desks.

9-year-old Rylan Fallis was shocked when he saw the special note accompanied with a cookie on his desk, and later admits to his mom that he was embarrassing for crying in class. Ryan told his mom Abby Fallis that he cried because he was happy about the letter his teacher gave him. Ms. Fallis even admits, “When I read it, I cried too.”

“The scores you will get from these tests will tell you something, but they will not tell you everything,” the letter read. “These tests do not define you. There are many ways of being smart. YOU are smart! You are enough! You are the light that brightens my day and the reason I am happy to come to work each day. So, in the midst of all these tests, remember that there is no way to ‘test’ all of the amazing and awesome things that make you, YOU.”

Abby Fallis wrote in her Instagram post: “We need not just more teachers like her, but also more people like her in this world.”

A majority of the text in the letter sent by the teacher who wishes to remain anonymous, was taken directly from a letter written by blogger Kimberly Hurd Horst. Her letter went viral in 2014.
