A homeless man walked up and down Lake Street in Minneapolis, before he made his way in Abi’s Cafe.

Begging for change, Cesia Abigail, the owner of the cafe asked the man, “Why don’t you have a job? You know nothing is given to me for free, right?” The man wearing baggy clothes bowed his head to avoid eye contact replied, “Well, I have a lot of felonies and no one wants to hire me for that. So, now I had to turn myself to the streets and get money the only way I know— stealing and asking for money.”

Abigail decided to do something that no one else had done for the man, and she offered him the opportunity to wash dishes for the day, saying, “You want a job? Then I have one for you.” The homeless man, named Marcus replied with a huge smile and said, “I will do anything for food.”

As Marcus tied an apron around his waist and was ready to start work, Abigail offered him a sandwich. Before eating it, he wrapped half of the sandwich in tinfoil and ran outside to give it to another homeless woman on the street. “That really touched me,” Abigail told CBS News.

That day, Marcus put in two hours of work— the numbers of hours Abigail could afford to pay him, and then he was on his way. He returned the following day and for two weeks straight for his two-hour shift, and Abigal says he has been on time every day.

The cafe has plans to make his position permanent. “Some restaurants wouldn’t even let you use their restrooms,” Abigail said. “I don’t judge someone on how they look — go use it. I do not treat [homeless people] any different.”

Abigail says she shared Marcus’ story on Facebook to encourage others to give strangers a shot.

Do something nice for someone today and don’t judge them just because they out there asking for money for we dont know their situation… some deserve another shot.”

Abigail told CBS News, “A lot of people are saying I’ve been a blessing for him, but at that point I was the one who needed a blessing.”

Turns out Marcus has been living on the street since he was 16 years old, and Abigail says, “It’s going to be hard of him to let go of whatever addiction he has. I want to help [him] but [he needs to want to help [himself.]”

For now, Abigail and Marcus are putting aside 10% of his paycheck so he can start learning to save his money.

“Just like Marcus, I had my help,” Abigail explained. “I had plenty of people to help make it to where I am today. They believed I could do it. People need to have someone believe in them.”
