The 1st of the month is often payday for a lot of people, but it’s not usually a cause for celebration when that cash flies right back out the door when you have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars on rent.
If you have ever rented a room, apartment, or entire home, then you probably know how frustrating it can be spending your hard-earned money on a place that isn’t actually your home, even if it’s the most cost-effective option.
Sick of spending more than $1,100 per month on rent, a former British soldier decided to throw away society’s expectations for himself and create his dream home for a fraction of his former cost per living each year.
After feeling there was too much pressure on people his age to invest in a home, 25-year-old Jamie Waddington spent less than he would on one month of rent to convert a 16-year-old LDV Convoy van into his own rent-free apartment on wheels.
He transformed the aging van’s interior into a gorgeous rustic haven of his own, which he says is much better than a place shared with roommates.
“I could make the van exactly how I wanted it and it is better than a house-share with people I don’t get on with know well,” he told DailyMail.

“I’ve always been an outdoor person but I realized this would give me the freedom what I wanted with my life. I felt I was growing up too quick and didn’t want to settle down.”
