This wasn’t the first time Mackenzie Behrens and her little brother Ethan were scared to get in the car with their father Jason.
Their dad has had a tendency to drive drunk, and the worst part is, he would do it even with his children in the car.
It wasn’t until one day that Mackenzie and Ethan were heading to Colorado for vacation with their dad, that they told him, “We don’t want to go anymore because you are drunk and I don’t want to die,” Mackenzie said. They remember being so frightened in the car that the next time their dad swerved, they told promised each other they would text 911.
“When a car passed, you could hear how close it was,” said 12-year-old Ethan Behrens. “You could hear how the metal was,” he told WMC Action News.
“The next time he swerves, send the text,” Ethan remembered telling 14-year-old Mackenzie. “And he swerved again, so I pushed send,” she said.
The text sent police on a hunt to find the rental car they were in before they could make it to the interstate. Ethan had an idea to stop at Burger King, and that’s when the cops caught up with them. Mackenzie said that when the officers checked, there was alcohol in her father’s cup.
When their mother, Amy Brooks learned of the incident, she says, “I was very angry, but it was kind of a bittersweet moment, to where the better part is that they are safe now, that I came and picked them up,” Brooks said. “The other part is that finally people will know and maybe listen to me.”
That day, Jason Behrens blew three times the legal alcohol limit.
Reflecting back, the kids said they would do everything the same. “He’s our parent – our other parent. It was hard, but he just pushed us to the point that we had to,” Ethan said.
And now, the kids have an important message to the officers who helped them that day: “I just want to thank them,” Mackenzie said. “Because they really, really, really saved our lives,” says Ethan.
