Martin Pistorius is a medical anomaly. He suffered a very rare ‘waking coma.”
At a young age, Martin began to lose mobility. He slowly became paralyzed and slipped into a coma-like state due to medical issues. While the name of his actual medical condition is either unknown or unstated by NBC, the condition has been described as turning him into a ‘Ghost Boy.’
Martin could see and hear the world around him, but he couldn’t respond or interact with it. Nurses and doctors thought he was incoherent and unobservant, so they treated him not just poorly, but with abuse.
Martin notes that many of his caretakers were saints and did exactly as they were supposed to, however, he experienced physical, verbal, and sexual abuse while in this state.
Perhaps the most shocking part of this whole story was what he revealed when he woke. Beyond being abused at every facility that took care of Martin, he also told his mother he overheard her say something shocking!
“I hope you die,” were the words she said at one of her lowest moments. When Martin revealed that he had heard her say these words, she broke down. She says she never meant them, but with the stress and frustration of being in such a horrible situation, she felt that she couldn’t do it anymore. She had needed a way out.
Obviously, Mom didn’t mean those words and she’s been regretting them since, but this incredible story shines a lot of light on how it feels to be in such a hopeless situation. We all have our dark moments, but there is always a way out. Sometimes we pull ourselves out and sometimes, others lend a hand and yank with all their might.
Is his hopeless situation, Martin couldn’t ask for help.
Sometimes, we can pull ourselves out and sometimes, we need a hand. If you want your friends to know they can ask you for help, then please Share this video. Let them know that if they find themselves in the metaphorical equivalent of Martin’s situation, they can come to you and ask for guidance.
