Antonette White may be one of the only students who had a college degree before she had a high school diploma.
Last Saturday, 17-year-old Antonette attended her junior college graduation at Illinois Central College, and one day later she went to her graduation at Dunlap High School.
When Antonette was just 8-years-old, she sat in the back of her dad’s sociology class which he taught, and learning was always around her. At just 13, White tested Antonette to see if she could place into college classes, and she tested at the college level for English and Math. White told Today.com that he obtained permission from the dean of ICC for Antonette to start taking night classes.
Antonette’s goal was never to graduate from both schools at the same time, it just worked out that way.
“I can’t say it was to finish (junior college) early,” Antonette said. “There was no plan to it. I just found out that if I could do more, why not? It was just me pushing myself to be the best I could be.”
“We took it extremely slow at first,” Antonette’s father said. “She started off with just one class, an entry-level English class, and it went from there.”
Antonette was dually enrolled in high school and ICC, where she took night classes to eventually obtain her associate’s degree. “I had to find a balance that worked well where I was completing all my classes,” she said. But after finishing with a 3.9 grade-point average at Dunlap and a 3.6 at ICC, Antonette did more than just find a balance. Antonette’s friends were not at all surprised when they learned Antonette earned two diplomas in one weekend.
“When my friends found out about it all being on the same weekend, they all thought it was funny,” she told Today.com. “They were all so supportive of it.”
She continues to an inspiration to everyone around her, and Antonette plans to enter Illinois State University as a Junior in the fall.
