Two 12-year-olds, Stella Usiak, and Lucas Lowe, may have met in an unlikely place, but their relationship is like any other young couple in love.
Stella and Lucas both suffer from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and they first met in the hospital when they started battling this very rare disease. Lucas tells WGRZ, “She’s had a crush on me for a while now, and I’ve had a crush on her, so her and me are boyfriend and girlfriend now.”
Lucas describes Stella as kind and nice,”like a woman should be.” And Stella says Lucas is a gentleman and hilarious.

The couple may be going through things that many other people including adults don’t understand, but they do understand each other. Roswell Park Registered Nurse Angelica Zachary says, “No one really knows what a kid with cancer is going through- not the parent, not the nurse, not a friend- the only other person that knows what a kid with cancer is going through is another kid with cancer.”
From the beginning, the hospital staff, along with Stella and Lucas’s family has watched their special friendship grow.
‘It was like this cute little old couple, sitting on the porch. It’s very rare that kids their age could kind of have that sort of compassion for each other,” said Stella’s mom, Jennifer Usiak.
“She just wants a boy to like her,” Usiak continued. “She just wants someone to make her feel special.”
And Lucas does just that. Whenever Stella is feeling down, Lucas knows just how to lift her spirits. He’s even gotten her a ring on Valentine’s Day that says, You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. “It means a lot,” says Stella.

The kids technically aren’t supposed to kiss without masks on, Lucas says, but Stella kisses him anyway, on the cheek.

While most parents would discover a relationship like this so young, Lucas’ mom, Maureen Warren, says “Cancer teaches you, you are not guaranteed tomorrow.”
