Many folks look forward to Memorial Day weekend as the official kick-off to summer, with backyard barbecues, trips to the beach or lake, and plenty of fun in the sun.

Sadly, not enough Americans take time to remember what the National holiday is truly about: the more than one millions soldiers who valiantly died serving their country. As the old saying goes, freedom isn’t free. These brave men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice so the rest of can live without fear.

One amazing group who recognizes Memorial Day as more than just a day off from work is Rolling Thunder, a group of bikers who bring awareness to military heroes lost as prisoners of war missing in action.

The annual Ride For Freedom has taken place every Memorial Day since 1988, but back in 2002 the tradition changed when United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers, an injured veteran, decided to jump of the curb as a spectator and join the bikers in their memorial by standing salute for each and every one of them as they passed.

Now known as The Saluting Marine, Staff Sgt. Chambers can be seen in uniform every Memorial Day weekend standing at salute for hours at a time.
