Dad Sues Panera Over 5-Year-Old’s Near-Fatal Peanut Allergy Mix-Up

Nowadays, it seems like every other person ordering food has a gluten intolerance or specific dietary needs, but when you’re the sufferer or parent of a child with a serious food allergy, you know being careful can be a matter of life or death.

As you can see in this unbelievable story about a baby girl who used sign language to tell her mother she was having a severe allergic reaction to her almond butter sandwich, parents need to be constantly on the lookout for signs of danger. However, sometimes stupidity in the food service industry is the only thing to blame for a horrible accident.

When 5-year-old Elissa Russo of Natick, Massachusetts ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and cookie from her local Panera restaurant, her father John was extremely careful to make it clear in the ordering instructions that his daughter had a severe peanut allergy and to be careful in her meal’s preparation.

You can only imagine this father’s outrage and terror when his little girl said her grilled cheese tasted funny and her throat started to close up. Within no time at all Elissa was vomiting and went into anaphylactic shock.

A look at the sandwich revealed that Panera staff apparently misread the instructions put a dollop of peanut butter on Elissa’s sandwich, nearly killing the little girl.

“Is this somebody doing this on purpose?” John Russo said he asked Panera staff. “Because it’s two freakin’ tablespoons of peanut butter on this sandwich and it’s a grilled cheese.”

Elissa spent the night in the E.R. and will recover from the traumatic incident, but her father has decided to sue Panera after they said they’ll investigate the incident.
