Abducted Son And Heartbroken Mother Reunite After 21 Years

Going through relationship struggles can be hard enough when you have a young child, but what happened to Maria Mancia more than two decades ago is truly every single parent’s worst nightmare.

For the past 21 years, all Mancia had of her young son Steve Hernandez was a single dark photograph and a handful of happy memories.

The Southern California-based mother’s life was turned upside down in 1995, when Steve’s father kidnapped their 18-month-old son and stole every photo ever taken of him, including a pregnancy ultrasound, to make it difficult for his son’s mother to track them down. WKYC reported that Mancia received the one photograph from a relative and has held onto it ever since.

Steve’s father told him his mother had abandoned him, so he was shocked when he was contacted by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Child Abduction Unit about his father, thanks to a tip about the cold case that Steve was living in Puebla, Mexico.

“With DNA analysis that match his mother, we knew we found Steve,” San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos told ABC 13. “I lived all these years without my mother, then to find out she’s alive in another country, it was emotional,” Hernandez told ABC 13.

He also found out he has four brothers and said he doesn’t plan on returning to Mexico and hopes to go to law school in the U.S., as he is an American citizen.
