Dad, John Marshall, lives with his 8-year-old son Gabriel in Kansas.
Sadly, in 2015, Gabriel was diagnosed with a form of cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma, which is a rare malignant brain tumor. Gabriel received surgery for his tumor, and he’s now doing well and has been off treatment for the past 9 months.
However, Marshall told BuzzFeed that Gabriel admitted to feeling like a “monster” because of a large scar he had as a result of his surgery.
“This broke my heart,” Marshall said.
So he decided to get a tattoo that resembled his son’s scar. That way, “if people wanted to stare, they could stare at both of us,” the doting dad said. To mark Father’s Day, Marshall entered St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s #BestBaldDad competition, and won with 5,000 votes!
Alison Sutton, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s social media manager told BuzzFeed, “[It was] the first time we’ve seen an entry where a dad went above and beyond shaving his head in solidarity with his child and got a tattoo to build his son’s self-confidence.”
As far as what Gabriel thinks of his dad’s tattoo, he said it makes them “twins.”
