High school graduation is one of the most momentous events in a young person’s life, so for a student to feel alone on such an important day is truly heartbreaking.

Steven Turner Jr. was excited to finally get his diploma from Paul W. Bryant High School last spring, although the senior was missing one very important person: his mom.

While her son was preparing to end his high school career, U.S. Army Petty Officer 2nd Class Vera Turner was away on deployment in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba proudly serving her country. Although Stephen wishes his mom could attend his graduation, he knew she had an important duty to fulfill and understood.

However, Officer Turner didn’t want to let a little distance get in the way of seeing her son’s big moment on stage.
