Weddings are costly. We all know this is a fact of life, much like death and taxes.

But one bridesmaid’s shocking story will leave you shaking in your boots and shivering in your bank account. The anonymous woman posted a story on an online forum that tells how her bride expected her bridesmaids to chip in for the wedding dress.

The high school English teacher’s tale was shared via mamamia.com.au, where she says the bride spent $10,500 on the gown. “At first, I thought Carol was just being a little overzealous,” the post reads. The bridesmaid, one of seven, was asked to help out on everything from finding makeup looks to table decorations, a request the goes beyond the call of wedding planning duty.

Then the bride began to ask for help in other areas. She emailed her bridemaids for help with booking wedding cake vendors, requesting that they find out contact details, price estimates, and how prestigious of a baker they were. “I felt my blood start boiling. Was she serious?! I have a full-time job, for crying out loud,” the bridesmaid wrote.

Then, the straw that broke the camel’s back fell delicately into place. After three weeks of shopping, the bride found her dream dress, but it was more than twice her budget, coming in at a hefty $10,500. Her bridesmaids pushed her to splurge, the anonymous author included, and with her friends’ reassurances, the bride caved. After all, this was her big day, her dream wedding with no expenses spared. It’s an easy trap to fall into.

However, this is where the story gets really strange…

Another email popped into the author’s inbox a few days later. It was simply titled “wedding dress contribution.” In it, the bride explained that because of the dress purchase, she and her fiancé were now seriously over their budget. She asked all the bridesmaids to pitch in $150 towards the cost of the gown.

The bridesmaid — who had already spent $550 for her own bridesmaid dress, not to mention the cost of the bridal shower, bachelorette, and the destination wedding itself — was understandably furious. “My bank account was already taking a battering from the wedding and now this?” the bridesmaid wrote. She didn’t respond, but over the next few days, at least three bridesmaids agreed to chip in.

The cautionary tale ends with our heroine wondering whether it’s time to bail on the wedding and even the friendship. Unfortunately, there’s no follow up to let us know what happens next, but let this be a warning. Weddings are all fun and games until someone gets asked to pay for someone else’s dream. Then, weddings can turn into nightmares.

Please SHARE this story with a blossoming bride in your life and tell us your thoughts in the comments. Was it outrageous for the bride to ask so much of her bridesmaids, or was she just expecting them to be good friends?

And when you’re done pondering that question, read this story about a Romanian woman who abandoned her newborn triplets in the hospital room because she could not afford to feed the children she already had. It might throw things into perspective a little bit better.
