We’re all for airport security taking careful measures to keep our country safe and prevent disasters, but what happened to one teen girl this week.
Hannah Cohen was beaten till she bled by federal Transportation Security Administration agents at Memphis International Airport after she became confused when setting off a metal detector.
According to WREG-TV, Cohen was returning home from St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. “They wanted to do further scanning, (but) she was reluctant — she didn’t understand what they were about to do,” her mother, Shirley Cohen, told WREG-TV.
The 19-year-old is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed and easily confused, according to her mother, so when TSA agents tried to lead her away for a screening, she tried to run away. That’s when agents wrestled the scared teen to the ground and beat her bloody.
“She’s trying to get away from them, but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor,” Cohen said. “There was blood everywhere.”
Cohen was arrested and jail, but police later dismissed the charges after the circumstances were revealed and her family filed a lawsuit against Memphis police, airport police and the TSA. The airport said that people with disabilities should be aware of the TSA procedures before entering the airport.
“Passengers can call ahead of time to learn more about the screening process for their particular needs or medical situation,” said TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz told WREG-TV.
