Tiny Chihuahua Saves Deaf Owner From Oncoming Train

If you’ve ever had reason to doubt that dogs truly deserve the title of “Man’s Best Friend”, this story about how one amazing pooch saved his owner is bound to reassure you.

We’ve heard plenty of stories about how dogs like Lassie look out for their owners, even when they’re very young like in this toddler’s story, but tiny pup Hook is not exactly who you’d expect to save the day when you’re in trouble.

However, the small Chihuahua-Jack Russell mix has proven that his bark is a lot stronger than his bite when his strength was tested in a pretty terrifying way. Hook, who got his name from the one-and-only Peter Pan villain, is a service dog for his mom, Joyce Herman, who is hearing impaired.  “He’s had basic training where he goes out and learns the commands and such to go out in public,” Joyce’s husband Dan Herman told ABC 13. “But the stuff I’ve seen him do is like intuitive-type stuff.”

“When there are competing noises, I have like a 50-50 hearing loss,” Joyce said, explaining that she has a hard time hearing outside when there are many things going on. Thankfully, tiny Hook was all ears when he was crossing through a busy intersection during rush hour with his mom and a train quickly approached them from behind.

“I was probably in the middle of the street and then Hook started jumping on me,” recalled Joyce. “When I got to the track, Hook just pulled me off the track,” Joyce said, explaining that the 13-lb dog pulled her to safety, when the train missed her by a couple of inches.

“I mean, here’s a dog who’s never been trained to take someone off the railroad tracks, to pull them away or warn them,” Dan said. “So I think he’s got an intuitive nature.”
