After walking out onto her front porch, one California mom noticed something in the corner of her eye behind a ceramic vase by the front door. When she got a closer look, she realized a sickly dog had hidden there to die.
“My heart just ached for her,” said Sharon Bertozzi, who immediately called animal services for help saving the sick dog, who rescuers later named ‘Princess’. However, once they got to Bertozzi’s house, they took a better look at the sickly ‘dog’ and realized it wasn’t actually a dog.
“At first this was thought to be a old very sick dog,” the team wrote on Facebook. “Upon taking a better look, it is really a young coyote with a really bad case of mange.”
Aside from the severe mange, a disease that causes intense itching, irritation, and hair loss, that made Princess unrecognizable, she was extremely dehydrated so the team gave her rehydration fluids and medication to treat the mange.
“She was bathed to help remove some of the dead skin and to make her feel more comfortable,” said Sallysue Stein, president of Gold Country Wildlife Rescue’s board of directors. “The next morning we were pleased to see that she drank all of the water and special diet food we had left with her overnight. She started scratching less and eating more.”
“She is now back on a natural diet, gaining weight and showing improvement in her skin,” Stein said. “We feel confident that she is on the road to a full recovery.”
