We often call moms superheroes for everything they put up with and manage to accomplish all while raising their children, but one mom truly earned the title after bravely putting her own health at risk to save four teenage boys.
Canadian mom of three, Lelania Chapman had just gotten out of her final chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer, however, before she left, doctors had delivered the devastating news that her cancer had spread.
Despite the discouraging news, Chapman had to stay strong since her 9-year-old son Gwindin was with her. Instead of going straight home, she decided to bring her little boy and three of his friends from the neighborhood on a waterfall hike near their home in Maple Ridge to show him a place she had loved as a child.
While walking, one of the children thought they heard screaming, however, the waterfall drowned out so much noise that it was barely audible. Chapman went to check and make sure nothing was wrong, and found four teenage boys stranded on a cliff beside the waterfall. She immediately tried calling for help, but her phone had no service.
Chapman couldn’t leave the boys, so quickly got out a rope from her backpack and got to work coming up with a plan to save them. Although the chemotherapy had made her weak, she tied the rope around a tree and around her waist, tossed it to the boys, and prepared to pull them up.
Chapman decided to start with the biggest boy, who was 6 feet tall and weighed 160 pounds, and despite not being able to pick up a watermelon, she managed to pull him up. “I don’t know how I picked him up by myself,” she said. “I don’t really know to this day. I’ve never been in a situation like that before and you never know what you are going to be like. No matter what, you are a lot stronger than you think you are.”
Eventually, Chapman and the teenager helped the other two boys up despite tearing open some of her radiation burns and surgery scars. And this show of strength and bravery was proof to Chapman’s little boy that she would beat her cancer. “He said ‘You know what, mom? You are going to [beat] cancer because you are the strongest mom around,'” she said. “That is probably one of the most important lessons that I learned that day. I do have the strength.”
